She shares insightful research, discusses the barriers to gratitude, and provides five practical steps to cultivate gratitude daily. By integrating these practices, listeners can enhance their overall well-being, develop resilience, and live a more joyful life.   Table of Contents The Importance of Cultivating Gratitude Benefits of Practicing Gratitude Overcoming Barriers to Gratitude Five Steps to a Daily Gratitude Practice Transforming Challenges with Gratitude Conclusion The Importance of Cultivating Gratitude Gratitude is a powerful emotional trait that extends beyond a simple "thank you." It involves recognizing the positive aspects of our lives and appreciating the efforts of others that contribute to our well-being. Developing an attitude of gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundance that surrounds us, fostering a more positive and satisfying life experience. Benefits of Practicing Gratitude Scientific studies highlight numerous benefits of practising gratitude regularly. These include improved sleep quality, enhanced immune function, self-confidence, and stronger interpersonal relationships. Regular gratitude practice also promotes emotional stability and can lead to long-term happiness and contentment. Overcoming Barriers to Gratitude Practising gratitude can be challenging in a society with a negative bias. Media often amplify negative news, making it harder to maintain a positive outlook. Additionally, comparing ourselves to others can hinder gratitude, as it diverts our focus to what we lack rather than appreciating our unique journey and accomplishments. Five Steps to a Daily Gratitude Practice Gratitude Journal: Jot down ten things you're grateful for every day. Consistency is key to ingraining this habit. Verbal Gratitude: Express what you're thankful for out loud in the form of prayer or affirmation, acknowledging the love and goodness you receive daily. Share Your Gratitude: Communicate your gratitude to those who matter most in your life, either through letters or face-to-face conversations. Gratitude Meditation: During meditation, focus on the people and events you're grateful for and send them positive thoughts. Reframe Challenges: When faced with difficulties, find the lessons within and express gratitude for the growth and awareness these experiences bring.  Transforming Challenges with Gratitude Gratitude offers a powerful framework for reframing negative situations. By identifying and appreciating the lessons within challenges, we can transform adversity into opportunities for personal growth and greater wisdom. This shift in perspective empowers us to embrace life's complexities with an open heart. Conclusion Cultivating an attitude of gratitude requires intentionality and practice, but the rewards are immeasurable. You open the door to a more positive, resilient, and joyful life when you integrate gratitude into your daily routine. Take action on the practices shared in this episode and observe the transformative effects on your overall well-being. Each November, join Pascale for the “Gratitude Experiment 7-week Challenge” to deepen your practice and connect with a community dedicated to gratitude. ………………………. FREE RESOURCES ………………………. Pascale    --------------------- FULL TRANSCRIPT --------------------- Episode 350: Unlock True Happiness - 5 Steps To A Daily Gratitude Practice Hello, beautiful souls. I am Pascale Gibon, your host, welcoming you to episode 350 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. Since we are halfway through the year, let us dive into the importance of cultivating gratitude. All this means is that gratitude must become a customary practice in your everyday life and not just an occasional acknowledgement. The mindset you develop with appreciation is that life happens for and through you daily. When you are grateful every day, you acknowledge the daily blessings and remain in a positive energy and mindset. The more positivity you attract into your life through your attitude of mind and heart, the more blissful your life becomes. Robert Emmons, who is a proponent of gratitude research, defines gratitude as follows: An affirmation of goodness. A way for us to acknowledge that the sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves. We are usually grateful to someone for something. Are there benefits to gratefulness? Recent mental health research found 35 benefits of practising gratitude regularly. According to current scientific studies, cultivating gratitude contributes to an individual's character development and overall well-being. There are many health and mental benefits to gratitude, to name a few: better quality sleep, boosted immunity, relieved depression, self-confidence, patience, optimism, resiliency as well as enhanced relationships. A regular practice of gratitude can lead to long-term emotional stability and contentment. Just imagine the effects of a grateful heart versus an ungrateful one. The former is loving and open, and the latter is contracted and resentful.  Practising gratitude daily improves our well-being and makes us stronger.  Gratitude leads to true happiness, and let me encourage you to make it a habit. As we go through our day-to-day lives, we usually take things for granted, and whenever things go wrong, we immediately fall into the trap that life is happening to us. Moreover, there is another trap: a mind drawn to negativity instead of positivity. It can be challenging to be grateful in a negativity-bias society. The media knows that sensational negative headlines sell more than positive ones. Since individuals are more attracted to negative news than positive ones, this reality prompts us to reinforce positivity in our lives with the gratitude practice. Another barrier to gratitude is comparing ourselves to others. When we compare ourselves to others, we fail to be grateful for what we have and our accomplishments. A comparison mindset leads to discontent, jealousy and a negative self-image.  So, how can we incorporate gratitude into our daily lives to enhance our character and well-being? Here are five ways to cultivate gratitude daily: 1. Gratitude Journal: Hold a gratitude journal and write down ten things you are most grateful for every day. Since this is a daily routine, it requires discipline and consistency. For this reason, I like the next practice if you fall out of the journal practice. 2. Verbal Gratitude: Make it a daily habit to say out loud what you are most grateful for in your life. It could be in the form of prayer. Additionally, make it a routine to acknowledge all the love you receive throughout the day. 3. Share your gratitude: Share your love with the people you are most grateful for in your life. You can write them a letter or tell them face to face.  4. Gratitude Meditation: Practise a gratitude meditation. As you meditate, reflect on the things you are most grateful for in your life. For example, bring the people to mind you appreciate the most in your life and send them gratitude. 5. Reframe Challenges: Reframe negative situations into positive lessons: Life happens, and we encounter challenging situations. However, you can take a deep breath and reframe the negative situation into a positive one. We express gratitude when we understand the lessons behind challenging situations that enable us to grow in wisdom and awareness. Those lessons are priceless.  As a practitioner of gratitude through daily prayer, I now also use gratitude throughout the day. Whenever I am aware of the expression of love, I appreciate that love and say “thank you” to the invisible and visible help I receive with appreciation.  It is proven that the attitude of gratitude has many psychological and physiological benefits. How could you incorporate more gratitude into your life? Would a gratitude journal or meditation work for you? Is expressing words of appreciation to others something you need to do more often? Do you need to send a letter to someone to let them know how much they helped you and how much you love them? Take a moment to reflect on gratitude and examine whether you have adopted an attitude of gratitude in your life to experience more positivity. If so, let me congratulate you. If not, it is time to act on the content I have just shared. Every year In November, I run the Gratitude Experiment 7-week Challenge, keep an eye out on my website pascalegibon.com for the forthcoming dates. It would be great to have you as a participant.  I look forward to connecting with you next Monday and wish you a fantastic week of gratitude. I am sending you lots of love and light.

Each November, media buzz around the annual abstinence challenge known as “No Nut November” seems to grow. This challenge involves men giving up ejaculation for the entire month. That means no sex and no masturbation—no orgasms of any kind. Those who participate do this for a wide range of reasons, but often with the intention of enhancing their health. But are there actually any health benefits to abstaining from orgasm for prolonged periods of time? To dive into what the science says, I spoke with Dr. Joshua Gonzalez, a board-certified urologist who is fellowship-trained in Sexual Medicine. We give a research-based take on “No Nut November,” while also offering a crash course in “semenology” to answer common questions about ejaculation and orgasm. Some of the topics we explore in this episode include: Where does semen come from and what is it made of? How many calories are in a single “serving” of semen? Is it really a source of protein? Why are so many men concerned about their ejaculatory volume? And is there anything they can do to increase it? Can abstinence from sex and masturbation enhance athletic performance? What is the link between masturbation and health? In what ways can being sexually active (both solo and partnered) potentially boost health? What are the most common sexual difficulties men experience, and what can they do to reduce their odds of developing them? What do men need to know about having better sex? He held the World Wrestling Federation tag team championship on two occasions, the european championship once, and the hardcore championship eight times. Now, we turn our feature story…. Members of Congress are renewing the push to make daylight saving time permanent as most of the nation prepared to turn back the clocks one hour this Sunday. U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat, said the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act would end an antiquated and disruptive practice. In a statement Friday, he said: “Each November, the practice of ‘falling back' an hour disrupts our lives and robs us of daylight hours to enjoy ourselves. It's time for Congress to take up this bipartisan legislation to make daylight saving time permanent and give Rhode Islanders an hour of afternoon sunshine back during the dark winter months.” Whitehouse has co-sponsored the measure along with two senators, Florida Republican Marco Rubio and Massachusetts Democrat Ed Markey, and others. He argues that making daylight saving time permanent has economic and public health benefits. Whitehouse said evidence suggests it can lead to greater economic activity, greater energy savings and lower rates of seasonal depression, not to mention fewer car accidents and robberies with more daylight in the late afternoon. Daylight saving time generally runs from mid-March to early November. But in recent years, some 19 states have enacted legislation or passed resolutions calling for year-=round daylight saving time, a change that would require congressional approval, Whitehouse said. On this first episode in the new run in 2021, please welcome Jim Moran, the master printer and collections officer at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Hamilton is a unique institution in all sorts of ways. It preserves the manufacturing history and remaining wood type assets of the historical Hamilton Wood Type Company, the dominant producer of wood type in America from the late 1800s through the 1990s.But it’s a lot more. Hamilton perpetuates the knowledge of the past by being an active printing museum. Volunteers cut wood the old-fashioned way and train apprentices. Hamilton has commissioned the design of new wood faces that can then be produced with vintage equipment, but also in conjunction with P22 Type Foundry releases versions of historic faces from their collection and newly made ones in digital form. The museum has also expanded its collection by acquiring massive collections of hand-carved billboard and poster pieces from the Cincinnati Enquirer. It’s also acquired a lot more wood type than it started with, having the largest collection of wood type in the world.Jim and other staff members, board members, affiliated friends, volunteers, and workshop participants print with historic type on historic presses. Each November for the last decade-plus, hundreds of people gather for the Hamilton Wayzgoose, the traditional name for the annual dinner a printing shop would have to celebrate its apprentices moving up. In 2020, that gatherings was virtual—the Awayzgoose—but it went on.Over the pandemic year of 2020, Hamilton reached out to its community and immediately started up the Hamilton Hangs, informal gatherings via Zoom that started around no topic in particular, and quickly shifted to feature printers and artists from around the world. Thousands of attendees across the more than 50 Hangs so far include old friends of the museum and people who might never be able to get to Two Rivers, but have discovered the joy of letterpress, history, and community online.Jim talks about his background, returning to his printing roots, and making lemonade during a year that might seem fallow of lemons.

Today, Nate and Evan sit down with Sara Johnson, Vice President of the Champaign County Audubon Society (CCAS) and Janet Jokela, acting regional Dean of the Illinois School of Medicine, volunteer, and current board member of the CCAS. This episode is dedicated to the Christmas Bird Count (CBC). We sit down, via zoom, and discuss CCAS. How did Sara and Janet get involved in birding and the CCAS? What is the Christmas Bird Count, and what does it mean to each of them? How can a person get involved in their local bird count? History of the Christmas Bird CountPrior to the turn of the 20th century, hunters engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas "Side Hunt." They would choose sides and go afield with their guns—whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won.Conservation was in its beginning stages in that era, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman, an early officer in the then-nascent Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition—a "Christmas Bird Census" that would count birds during the holidays rather than hunt them.So began the Christmas Bird Count. Thanks to the inspiration of Chapman and the enthusiasm of 27 dedicated birders, 25 Christmas Bird Counts were held that day. The locations ranged from Toronto, Ontario to Pacific Grove, California with most counts in or near the population centers of northeastern North America. Those original 27 Christmas Bird Counters tallied around 90 species on all the counts combined. Each November, birders interesting in participating in the CBC can sign up and join in through the Audubon website. From December 14 through January 5 each year tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas brave snow, wind, or rain, and take part in the effort. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this long-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. The data collected by observers over the past century allow Audubon researchers, conservation biologists, wildlife agencies and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. When combined with other surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey, it provides a picture of how the continent's bird populations have changed in time and space over the past hundred years. The long term perspective is vital for conservationists. It informs strategies to protect birds and their habitat, and helps identify environmental issues with implications for people as well. Craig breaks down what the "tithe" is and why it's important in our faith journey, and he also shares stories of God's provision over the years in his life and in the life of his home church. *Each November and December our church focuses on the topic of generosity. Our staff fully realizes that 2020 has hit individuals and families hard in profound financial ways, and we hope that you'll listen to this series without guilt to give to our church. We want to share the power of generosity with you because we know it's a powerful part of your relationship with God, and we hope that if you're able to give that you will give to ANY church, not specifically ours! We love you and we are so thankful that you are here!*

Each November, writers around the world make a commitment. They commit to writing a novel within a month. It’s called NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writer’s Month. Since 2013, software developers have also been making a commitment. They’ve committed to generating a novel within a month. It’s called NaNoGenMo – National Novel Generation Month. The novels these programmers create – if you can call them novels – can tell us a lot about the future of work. How well can AI write a novel? (Not at all, really.) The novels that programmers generate are all over the board. One “novel” was just Moby Dick, written backwards. Another “novel” was called Paradissssse Lossssst. It was a reproduction of John Milton’s epic poem, but with each “s” in the poem replaced with a varying number of other s’s. But, some programmers take the task a little more seriously. They train AI models and see what they come up with. One such model is called GPT-2. GPT-2 was once considered too dangerous to release to the public, because you could supposedly generate subversive content en-masse, and do some pretty nefarious things. Kind of like [Russia did with a farm of human-generated content around the 2016 election]. And what is this advanced AI model able to generate? So far, nothing impressive. Programmer and author of [aiweirdness.com] Janelle Shane tweeted, “Struggling with crafting the first sentence of your novel? Be comforted by the fact that AI is struggling even more.” The sentence this AI model generated for Janelle: “I was playing with my dog, Mark the brown Labrador, and I had forgotten that I was also playing with a dead man.” Not exactly Tolstoy. The follow up to GPT-2 is now out, so we’ll see this year what kind of novel GPT-3 can generate, but if Janelle Shane’s experiments so far are any indication, humans will still have the edge. She asked GPT-3 how many eyes a horse had. It kept telling her: [four]. Your edge as a human lies in your creativity According to Kai-Fu Lee, author of AI Superpowers, forty- to fifty-percent of jobs will be replaced by AI and automation within the next couple of decades. But humans won’t be replaced across the board. It’s the creativity- and strategy-based jobs that will be the most secure. If your job is an “optimization-based” job, you might want to start reinventing yourself. If your primary work is maximizing a tax refund, calculating an insurance premium, or even diagnosing an illness, your job involves so-called “narrow tasks.” These tasks are already being automated, or soon will be automated. You could type out 50,000 nonsense words in about a day. A computer can generate 50,000 words faster than you can blink. But, you could write a novel in a month. A computer can’t write a novel at all. Which means your edge as a human is not in typing the words faster. Your edge as a human is in thinking the thoughts behind the words. This doesn’t just apply to writing novels. If you’re an entrepreneur building a world-changing startup or a social worker helping a family navigate taking care of a sick loved-one, your creativity matters. No AI will be able to do what you do for a very long time – if ever. So when a computer can do in the blink of an eye something that would take us all day, and when our creativity is the one thing keeping us relevant, that has powerful implications on how we get things done. Time management isn’t built for creative work Remember from episode 226 when we learned about [Frederick Taylor]? How he stood next to a worker with a stopwatch and timed every action and broke down all of those actions into a series of steps? He optimized time as a “production unit.” But creativity doesn’t work like stacking bricks or moving chunks of iron. Remember there are three big realities about creativity that make it incompatible with the “time management” paradigm: Great ideas come in an instant One idea can be infinitely more valuable than another idea You can’t connect inputs directly to outputs In a world where creativity not only matters, it’s arguably the only thing that matters, the ways that time management is incompatible with creativity are big problems. They’re especially big problems because the more you’re watching the clock – the more you’re a [“clock-time” person], like we talked about on episode 235, the less creative you’re going to be. So the things that used to make us more productive, now make us less productive. We can’t try to do more things in less time. We can’t multitask. We can’t skip out on sleep or otherwise neglect our health. If you want to kill creativity: Get five hours of sleep a night, fight traffic for two hours a day, and start each day with a piping hot thermos of a psychoactive drug. This is the unfortunate and inescapable reality of most Americans today. Don’t expect technology to be creative for you, use technology for you to be creative Will an unassisted AI be winning the Nobel Prize in literature in the next ten years? Some might think so. I’m no AI expert, but I’m skeptical. Remember from Episode 237 that [the birthday problem] shows us how hard it is for us humans to understand how complex some things are. GPT-3 is one-hundred times more powerful than GPT-2. But is it one-hundred times better at writing a novel? We’ll see – I doubt it. Does that make AI and other technologies useless in creative work? Far from it. We can use technology not only to lift us out of drudgery, but to assist us in being creative. Here’s just some of the ways I use technology to be more creative: I live in a cheaper country, where I can have more flexibility to do work with unpredictable success ([Extremistan] like we talked about in the previous episode). When I moved to South America, I mourned the loss of easy access to paper books. But now, five years later, I have many thousands of highlights of the most important ideas I’ve come across in my reading. This is because I’ve been forced to read almost everything on Kindle. I can quickly and easily search through those highlights. This makes writing new books much easier than it would be otherwise. I’m able to live in South America because of cheap air travel, access to massive amounts of knowledge through the internet, and global publishing power, communication, and electronic banking. Not to mention easy Spanish translation in the palm of my hand. Aside from those Kindle highlights, I can store, organize, and quickly retrieve relevant information I’ve previously consumed or taken notes on. I can quickly reference old ideas and connect them to make new ideas. I’m able to test out my ideas and get instant feedback on what’s working or not through Twitter, and email, website, and podcast stats. Amazon’s algorithms help relevant readers find my books, which earns me money so I can write more. There are starting to be some glimmers of AI assisting us in creativity in some more direct ways. A new service called [Sudowrite] won’t write a novel for you, but it uses GPT-3 to suggest characters or plot twists for your novel. If you combine advances in AI models with the trends there are in studying the structure of stories, it’s not hard to see a future where AI plays a big role in assisting writers in coming up with stories. But for now, don’t expect technology to be creative for you. Instead, use technology to help you be more creative. New times call for new measures. When we’re trying to define what it means to be more productive, we can’t apply thinking from the industrial age when we’re in the midst of the creative age. If you want to know how to make your book a success story, ask the woman who built a business of making book success stories possible. Antoinette Kuritz, CEO of The Kuritz Group, Inc., an organization that includes Strategies Literary PR in San Diego, CA, The La Jolla Writers Conference, and Writer's Roundtable radio show, is known for taking writers from idea to successful publication and beyond. She helps authors determine the marketability of their idea, build their platforms, determines the best publication method and works with them on PR and Marketing. Antoinette inspired Chicken Soup mogul Mark Victor Hanson and launched the national career of psychic medium John Edward. She has also worked with Carl Reiner, Betty White, Deepak Chopra and her favorite, Dr. Benjamin Spock. In her 350 radio shows, she interviewed top authors, publishers and agents; in her regular KUSI-TV spot she recommends books from her “Nightstand Reads”. In 2001, combining her “behind-the-book-cover” expertise and her love of teaching, Antoinette founded the LaJolla Writers Conference. Each November in San Diego, the conference provides an inexpensive, informative and intimate gathering of established authors, agents and editors, guiding writers of all levels to success.
