Wink Martindale passed away on Tuesday, Apr. 15, 2025 at age ninety-one.

In 1954, twelve-year-old Jerry Schilling wandered into a Memphis touch football game, only to discover that his team was quarterbacked by nineteen-year-old Elvis Presley. Elvis was still an unknown, but his first record, "That's All Right," had just debuted on Dewey Phillips' popular WHBQ radio show "Red, Hot & Blue." That chance encounter with the future King of Rock ‘n' Roll began an adventure for Schilling that continues to this day. In this episode, Schilling, who later became a successful talent manager, shares stories of how Elvis's friendship has been an inspiration his life and career. Then, Alicia Dean, from Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. joins to provide a behind-the-scenes look at Graceland and Elvis Week today. George Klein is much more than a friend of Elvis Presley. He was one of the first DJ's in Memphis to play rock and roll on the radio, before Elvis. That was just the beginning of what George would do for Memphis, music wise. He became one of the most famous disc jockeys in Memphis history. He had the RKO "Boss" jock sound down when he was at WHBQ. You can't mention those call letters without thinking of George Klein or GK as Elvis called him.
It bothers me that for so long, George Klein has been seen as just Elvis' friend. George is an innovator and an ambassador to Memphis music. He has helped bring Memphis music to the world and the world of music to Memphis. George Klein is much more than a friend of Elvis Presley. He was one of the first DJ's in Memphis to play rock and roll on the radio, before Elvis. That was just the beginning of what George would do for Memphis, music wise. He became one of the most famous disc jockeys in Memphis history. He had the RKO "Boss" jock sound down when he was at WHBQ. You can't mention those call letters without thinking of George Klein or GK as Elvis called him. George met Elvis when they were in the eighth grade at Humes. He and Elvis had a lot more in common than their careers; they thought a lot alike. Like Elvis, GK doesn't have an unkind word to say about anyone. He is respectful, kind, and caring. In addition to his work at 56 WHBQ radio, George also had a TV show on WHBQ TV Channel 13 called Talent Party. Talent Party was always faithful to local talent. Every show featured at least one local act. That show broke a lot of Memphis talent, like a group called Knowbody Else. You may know them better as Black Oak Arkansas. He also helped launch Sandy Posey's career ("Born a Woman" and "Single Girl"). George broke some records on Talent Party that went on to be national hits. Songs by the artists that George believed in like "Keep on Dancing" by the Gentrys and Sam the Sham's "Wooly Bully," just to name a couple. Whenever a group wanted to be on the show, George didn't care what they had done. He cared about what they sounded like. No tape? No problem. George worked out a deal with Roland Janes at Sonic Recording Studios. For thirteen dollars, a group could go in and cut one to four songs to lip-synch on the show. GK watched to see what other music shows were doing at the time, and he noticed that many of them featured regulars. He decided to do the same. He picked two acts to feature every other week, Flash and the Casuals (later Flash and the Board of Directors), and Sherry Grooms were who he decided on. David "Flash" Fleischman (now co-owner of All Memphis Music, an internet station) told me, "I met GK four days after turning sixteen and getting my driver's license. I Drove to WHBQ because I wanted to meet this disc jockey. Not because I wanted to be in radio or was interested in radio, but because he booked bands and I was in a band. That was the start of what's been a 48-year friendship. I'm proud to call George Klein, my friend, and no matter what I do, I can never repay George for what's he's done for me. He's been there and advised me all these years, every step of the way. And one of the things that makes George so special is that he has helped so many over all these years. As the title of the Tina Turner song says, GK is "Simply the Best." GK not only discovered Memphis singing talent but other talent as well. During the annual Miss Teenage Memphis Pageant, the Talent Party fashion coordinator spotted a standout beauty. She brought the girl to George's attention, and they sent some pictures of her to a modeling agency in New York. The agency accepted her. She became the model of the year, and then Hollywood came calling on Cybill Shepherd. One of the groups that came to Memphis to be on Talent Party was an unknown band from California called the Soul Children (not to be confused with the Stax group that featured Jay Blackfoot). They didn't have a tape, so George sent them to Sonic Recording and Roland Janes to make their thirteen-dollar tape. They took that tape to Stax Records, and it got them a million-dollar contract. They changed their name to Con Funk Shun and went on to record 14 albums.

The survey of 2,000 Americans found that 63 percent are giving up on a summer body and are now focusing their efforts on achieving a post-quarantine body. 76 percent of 2,000 respondents shared they've gained up to 16 pounds during their time in isolation. - When most nurses finish their long shifts caring for the sick, there is little else on their minds but seeing their families, eating and sleeping. Not so Damaris Silva who twice a week, when she finishes her shift at a Chilean hospital, picks up her violin and returns to the ward. Silva spends several hours walking the corridors of the hospital (in Santiago). She plays a mix of popular Latin songs, bringing a moment of levity for both patients — some of whom have spent weeks in COVID-19 critical care — and exhausted colleagues. Silva's goal is to “give a little bit of love, of faith, of hope with my violin. Every time I do it, I do it from my heart.” - Firefighters in Britain came to the rescue of small fox with its hind leg stuck in a wooden picnic table. The firefighters extracted the fox's hind leg from the table, but the animal appeared to be injured so they waited with the animal until rescuers arrived to care for it. - Illinois is one of the few states that's coming out of COVID-19 pretty well. The state locked down in late March and its governor told residents to wear masks early on. Scientists discovered that being able to pull off dance floor moves with the ease indicates strength and ability to produce healthy offspring. It took 12 hours for 20 workers to remove the piles of what they described as “trash” collected by the couple. When asked why he stored the trash instead of selling it, the husband said current recycling prices are too low and he was waiting out the market. Ephie Ballard-Johnson was born in Memphis, TN. After graduating from Treadwell High School, she attended the University of Memphis where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in technical writing. She then worked as an educator in the Memphis City School System for a number of years before serving as the Administrative Director of Neighborhood Christian Centers, Inc., a nonprofit Christian organization that employs over 60 staff members and provides many programs and assistance for 50,000 neighbors in need annually. After ten years as Administrative Director, she seceded her mother and NCC founding director, JoeAnn Ballard, as President/CEO of theNeighborhood Christian Centers (NCC) in 2008. Since that time, Mrs. Johnson has spearheaded the creation of the Early Childhood Brain Development program- Operation Smart Child- in partnership with The Urban Childhood Institute, organized the First Ladies for Healthy Babies Network with the support of Tennessee First Lady Crissy Haslam. Along with a committed staff, Ephie has a heart for the Memphis community, she is committed to the plight of the elimination of poverty through her service at NCC. Mrs. Johnson is the host of FOX 13 WHBQ’s “Faith Forum” and also serves on the Advisory Council at Memphis Light Gas & Water, is a Board Member of On the Grove Music, and is a CAB Board Member of the Department of Human Services. In addition to her work with NCC, Ephie works as a professional vocalist and songwriter, as well as a noted inspirational speaker. Her love for the Lord has inspired Ephie to write beautiful Christian Music, including her single The King is Here. She has been a keynote speaker for various faith-based, community service, and women’s focused conferences throughout the country and around the world, most recently traveling to Japan, Guyana, Kenya, and Argentina. Ephie is married to Rodney, her husband of 20 years, and has two beautiful children, Andre and Jonathan. They attend Hope Presbyterian Church She and Rodney have been members of Hope Presbyterian Church’s worship team for 16 years, under the leadership of Grammy and Dove award winner Bruce Carroll.
