Episode Notes I am joined by Gareth Hopkins to review the Italian coming of age graphic novel Forever. About Gareth: Gareth Hopkins is an artist and comics creator, best known for his Abstract Comics work. He's probably best known for his abstract autobiographical comic 'Petrichor', as well as the ongoing project 'The Intercorstal'. He's currently working on a short story collection, with sections of the book being released as they're complete - Moon Puke, nothing, A Hill To Cry Home and The Bones of The Sea, among others. http://www.grthink.com/ email: gareth@grthink.com Twitter: @grthink Facebook: /grthink About Forever: What is this "love" everyone talks about? Viola doesn't yet know. But it is a question she is asking herself more and more, because at her age there are some kinds of problems you feel even in the air that you breathe: your self-image and the way you think others see you, the relationship between you and your body and the other gender, couple issues, the freedom to follow your aspirations, and the need to fit in socially accepted categories. On vacation with her parents, during the idle hours of the afternoon while everyone is sleeping, Viola's encounters and experiences will help her grow as a person and get answers to the hard questions that everyone has to face sooner or later, and she will reshape her identity, in a summer she'll never forget. Assia Petricelli was born in Naples, Italy, where she still lives today. A creator of varied talents, she has worked on historical documentaries, audiovisual projects, and publications in collaboration with Italian television network Rai and numerous public and private entities, focusing on contemporary history, art, archeology, and matters of gender. Cattive ragazze (Bad Girls) was her award-winning graphic novel debut, alongside artist Sergio Riccardi. In 2020, they came together again for the coming-of-age tale Per sempre (Tunué; Forever, Europe Comics). Sergio Riccardi was born in Naples, Italy, in 1981. After first working as a set designer for cinema and television, he turned his attention to comics, illustration, and animation. He collaborated with writer Assia Petricelli on the graphic novel Cattive ragazze (Bad Girls), and illustrated Salvo e le mafie alongside writer Riccardo Guido, with both books earning acclaim and awards. He joins the Europe Comics catalog with the coming-of-age story Forever (Tunué), written by Assia Petricelli. YOU’RE JUST TOO TOO OBSCURE FOR ME, YOU DON’T REALLY GET THROUGH TO ME OVER HERE! MAN ON! IN THE BOX! CROSS IT ONTO MY HEAD MY OLD SUNSHINE! WHAT WAS THAT?! WHERE ARE YOUR SPECS, REF?! Ah, Footblurb. The beautiful game. WELL, THIS WAS A MASSIVE PAIN IN THE ARSE TO EDIT! Having said that, it was a delight for The Beast Must Die and Gary Lactus to welcome Dan Cox and John Riordon for a reasonably informal wag of chins. But it’s not entirely informal, as Danny and Johnny, the Hitsville Brothers tell us tales of their experiences of running the Hitsville UK Kickstarter. Inevitably, everything falls apart as the SILENCE!#295 experience becomes one of listening in to the rambling chat of the four men on the table next to yours. What kind of men are these? What drives them? What interests them? Well, in short: Jeff Bezos, their children’s relationships with super heroes, cosplay families, their dream Strontium Dog TV show and the music documentaries King Rocker, The Chills: The Triumph And Tragedy Of Martin Phillips and the Tina Turner doc, Tina. Oh, and Timmy Capello. Anyone read any comics? Well sort of. There’s talk of Danny Hitsville’s Chris Claremont Completion Crusade, Paul Jon Milne’s Grave Horticulture, the forthcoming Pocket Chiller Speckle and Ash, Gareth Brookes’ The Dancing Plague, Gareth Hopkins‘ Ghosts In Things, LDN by Ramzee, Jim Woodring’s Jabba The Hutt and Thriller. Finally there’s some reckymends, namely List Off, Three Bean Salad, The Office US, Laser Fart and, (as usual) Chart Music.

Every winter, in the United States alone, more than 15 million tons of salt are spread over roads to remove ice. So what are the effects of all this extra salt on wildlife? In this episode, Dr Gareth Hopkins describes how increased salinity affects freshwater newts, and debunks a common myth about ‘environmentally-friendly’ de-icers. EP27 and its a week covering a good win at Fleetwood to go back top and a loss at home to Rotherham that disappointing as it was left us top again! The crazt run in that this is likely to be is really starting to get going. THis week we are joined by Mid Wales finest STFC pundit, Gareth Hopkins who absoloutly goes to town on the ref in the Rotherham game, and rightly so. He also gives us his all time town team and joins Glyn and Ollie in taking apaert the latest two games. Big questions about Henderson, "Plan B", set piece defending and effective wingers. But its not time to panic. Its time to enjoy the "we are top of the league" intro again. Hopefully it will stick around a few weeks yet! Thanks Salopcast
Captain Kane Williamson and coach Mike Hesson should be axed from the New Zealand T20 setup. That's the call from leading commentator Simon Doull, the former international, who wants Martin Guptill installed as the new captain. Doull suggested New Zealand great Daniel Vettori — who coaches in the IPL and Big Bash — as a coaching candidate.Doull says New Zealand is constantly found out when the pressure goes on against good sides, and believes the current T20 outfit has too many ties to the test squad. He described Hesson as a great coach, but believes he needs more breaks while the T20 side needs a specialist, more up-to-date boss.Doull said Australia had just one test player in their T20 side while the Black Caps had seven.Williamson, Ross Taylor and Tim Southee were among the players who should be dropped, with the likes of Anton Devcich, Mark Chapman and Tim Seifert promoted. The only regular test players who should survive, in Doull's opinion, were Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult.Doull told the Radio Sport Breakfast: "I don't think we are getting the selections right — I've had some concerns for a while."I would like to see Colin de Grandhomme batting higher but it is the selections, not the batting order (which is the problem). We want dynamic players and should be giving them an opportunity at T20 level."If Kane Williamson doesn't open in T20 he shouldn't be playing. His record opening is very good, at three and four it's not that great. But he shouldn't be in the T20 side, there's a lot shouldn't be in the T20 side."Williamson averages about 38 as a T20 opener, and 22 batting elsewhere. He had a shocker in the Tri-Series opener in Sydney, scoring eight off 21 deliveries against the Australians batting at number three.Williamson was dismissed for just 8 runs from 21 balls in Sydney. (Photo Photosport)Doull said Guptill was New Zealand's senior white ball specialist who would "relish the captaincy and responsibility". Coach Hesson, meanwhile, needed the chance to freshen up."He's a great coach who has done an amazing job, and has really grown into the job," Doull said."But he gets very little time off, only a small amount of time with his family. Give him T20 completely off, get a new coach, new ideas, a new bunch of players."(The coach) probably needs to have played the game to understand it a bit better. The Northern Knights had Gareth Hopkins solely as their T20 coach and he played until recently. The rest of the coaches around the country are a bit older, out of touch with T20."On the Tri-Series, Doull initially picked England as the team to beat but was extremely impressed with an Australian side packed with rising specialists."They've got guys with great slower balls, variations, long batting power. It is a very, very good T20 side and I can see Australia upsetting England," he said.

On May 11th 2017, Gary Lactus, The Beast Must Die and Lord Nuneaton Savage sat atop the Bishop’s Finger with a the finest fellows a bunch of pod bods could ever hope for. Small Press was the theme of the evening but first we started off with Tam Laniado leading a tribute to the recently rest-in-peaced Leo Baxendale. Proceedings proceeded with some rambling chat which covered such small press obscurities as Bum Child by Tim Leopard, OHM by an odd chap that John Bishop met at a convention many years ago, Fast Fiction, Meow by Cyriak and L.I.F.E. Brigade by the delusional genius C. A. Stormon. There was also talk of Viz and the indestructible Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles After a pleasant refill we decided it would be sensible to talk to the creators present. This meant John Riordan going on about Hitsville UK, Douglas Noble waffling on about Strip For Me and Gareth Hopkins guffing about Intercorstal. Luckily there’s some top top chat about daytime TV wine experts to liven things up. After a lovely singalong we turned off the recording devices and indulged in social activities which shall go unrecorded and spoken of in hushed tones as the years passed thus turning all present for this wonderful evening into legends.
