Minnesota Distance Elite Team member and Puma professional marathoner and long-distance road racer Annie Frisbie shares how it all went down at the 2024 15k National Championships, which took place March 2, 2024, in Jacksonville, FL, at the Gate River Run. Frisbie had a great race at the 15k, for some interesting and special reasons. And she gets into it. And, this episode is a bit of a twofer because what happened at the 15k champs was directly influenced by the previous race on Frisbie's calendar, the 2024 US Olympic Trials Marathon. So, she covers that race as well. The marathon trials was, to put it mildly, Frisbie's A race. It was the one chance that comes every four years to make an Olympic team. For Frisbie, it did not turn out to be the day she dreamed of. She finished a terrific 10th place in a hugely competitive field, but the goal had been top 3, because the first three women to cross the finish line were automatic selections for the team heading to Paris. Frisbie tells the whole story in this episode: the build-up to the marathon, how it went down that day, her processing the deep disappointment of not making the Olympic team, and her return to racing. Frisbie's first post-trials race was indeed the 15k, and she shares what happened there and why it was a great return to racing. Annie Frisbie is a top American distance racer. Her thoughtful insights into competition, including the mental and emotional side of racing, make this an inspirational inside look into life as a professional runner. Just like last year, you can expect a Race Report episode for each race of the USATF Road Circuit series of races. Each episode features one top 10 runner telling the story of how the race went down, from her perspective. And because a race is never just about what happens on race day, you will get to know a little bit more about each one of the runners featured and how this race figures into their larger running story. The USATF 15k National Championships is a part of the USATF Running Circuit championship series of races. These are races that happen throughout the United States all year long and each race serves as a national championship for the distance or the type of race that is being run. Also, at each one of these races, in addition to vying for a national title, runners earn cash prizes and they earn points. The points go toward the series overall, which is determined at the end of the year. The next race on the circuit is the 10-Mile National Championships taking place in Washington, D.C., on April 7. A WRS Race Report will publish shortly thereafter. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss it! In addition to her big successes, Emma Grace did experience her share of challenges. And, she's been through some significant changes. She moved teams, from the Atlanta Track Club to Heartland. Emma Grace Hurley is a young professional runner with the Atlanta Track Club. She is relatively new to racing longer distances on the road, having raced her first road races as a pro last year. In this race report, Emma Grace gives us some background on her racing career, as well as the inside scoop on how things went down at the 2023 USATF 15k National Championships, which were held on March 6 at the Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Florida. With Emily Sisson lining up, it was an all but foregone conclusion that she would run away with the win, which she did. The American record holder in the marathon and half-marathon, Emily Sisson is having a "moment," to put it mildly. But how would the rest of the race unfold for this stellar field of competition? Emma Grace had her sights on making sure she had some say in the matter, which is exactly what she did. No doubt, we'll be hearing a lot from Emma Grace in the future. Stay tuned to the end of the episode to hear top 10 results from this incredible field of top American runners. For Episode 56 we've got two-time Olympian and American Record holder in the 15k, Todd Williams. He is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and operates Monroe Jiu-Jitsu in Michigan. It's truly an honor to have Todd on the podcast. In this episode we chat about what we can do to prevent being attacked, how to be better be prepared, as well as, what to do when attacked. He also goes into some of the key safety tips for runners. By now we have all probably learned and heard about what happened to Eliza Fletcher and many of us have done tribute runs in her honor. I really wanted to bring a subject matter expert in the conversation for us to learn from. So, take that with an open mind. What happened is heartbreaking and should have never occurred, but hopefully we can all do our part to keep each other safe when running on the roads and trails. Todd Williams began his jiu-jitsu career training under Helio “Soneca” Moreira, a jiu-jitsu legend under Carlos Gracie Junior. He would continue his training and eventually earn his black belt under Luiz Palhares. He is a two-time USA Cross Country National Champion in 1991 and 1993. At the Olympic Games, he competed at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona in the 10,000m placing 10th overall with a time of 28:28:38. He then competed at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Between the Olympic Games, Todd also represented Team USA at the World Championships in 1993 and 1995. He won the Gate River Run 15k in Jacksonville, FL five times, including in 1995, when he set a still-standing American Record with a time of 42:22, which equals roughly 4:34/mile for 9.3 miles.
You know when people say "Wow, that kid is going places..."? Nico Montanez is that kid, both in running and in life. An ASICS-sponsored athlete, Nico just won the 15K National Champs at the Gate River Run last month. But that's just part of his life. We talk about what it's like training under great coaches, his unbreakable mind on race day, and giving back to others. Seriously, this was a good one. RUN 2022 Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Florida, was one we had not planned on getting to, but Barbara DiGirolamo (@babz019 on Instagram), who we were lucky to meet and get to know at the Donna Marathon Weekend 2022, convinced us we needed to get there. The experience did not disappoint. Jacksonville residents came out to support and cheer on the runners in this National Championship at the 15K distance. We experienced a great expo, a well-supported course, and the “green monster.” Would we do it again? We discuss all that and more in this episode. EAT Prati Italia was our restaurant of choice when carb-loading for this 15K race. The Prati Italia food menu has so many tasty options! We can't wait to go back and try everything, including the deep-fried lasagna that we saw come to a table. It made our mouths water! They had a beautiful restaurant with an open kitchen, a beautiful setting inside or by the water, and a full vegan menu for us to sample, too! We talk about it in this episode. Special thanks to the hostess (whose name we did not catch) who found seating for us, even though we accidentally made our reservation the next night when we meant to make it for the night before the race). Big thanks and praise to our server Cassidy, who was knowledgeable about everything on the menu and gave us a first-class experience. Get here if you can to try their menu, whether regular, vegan, or vegetarian. And ask for Cassidy! DRINK Prati Italia's specialty non-alcoholic drinks were a welcome surprise when perusing the drink menu. We can't wait to get back and try their extensive cocktail list that includes cleverly named beverages like the “Frankly Speaking” and “Walk Don't Run.” The night before the race, though, we were so happy with the handmade sodas we got to try. THAT'S A WRAP! On the food and beverage front, Prati Italia is a winner! Make a reservation, get there, and enjoy! Let us know what you have if you do! Thank you for listening! We are looking forward to YEAR NUMBER 5 of the podcast because of your support! Don't forget to follow us and tell us where to find you next on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. In this month's banter episode, the guys start by wishing each other a happy podiversary, as it has now been over a year since we recorded the first ECT Pod! A huge thank you to all of our friends, guests, and listeners who have gotten us this far. And if it's okay with y'all, we're still feeling it, so we're just gonna keep on doing this thing.Tony and Eli check in on their over/under wagers, none of which are resolved yet. But data points are starting to emerge, some of them courtesy of the Atlanta Track Club, who, almost exactly a year after their triumphant Olympic Marathon Trials, returned to large-scale in-person racing with an approximately three-thousand in-person runner Publix Atlanta Marathon Weekend held at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The guys are very interested to see large-scale racing continue to (safely!) ramp up, including soon at the Woodlands Marathon in Tony's home state of Texas as well as Florida's Gate River Run, which is sold out at 8,000 registrants (half its usual capacity) for its upcoming race. The guys then dive into data, talking about what they learned from Running USA's 2020 Global Running Survey and Run Signup's demographic overview of virtual registrants on their platform. There are great takeaways about DEI and how events need to be willing to lead their consumers in that space (and be willing to leave some behind), as well as insights into who virtual runners really are. The biggest revelation of all, though, comes when Eli realizes that Tony can summarize in fifteen seconds what it takes him five minutes to say.If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts, and if you don't ever want to miss an episode be sure to subscribe. So what is the Dunning-Kruger Effect? Back in the late 90s, David Dunning and Justin Kruger, professors from Cornell College, did a study that concluded that the less an individual knows about a particular topic, the more likely they are to overvalue their skill, ability, or knowledge on that topic. Let me use an example from my own life to demonstrate the Dunning-Kruger Effect: Around 15 or 20 years ago, a friend of mine was having a conversation with his dad about the Gate River Run. My friend found out that he could win a substantial amount of money by winning the race. Now, my friend was not a runner; he was a good athlete, but people who win the Gate River Run average a mile in 4.5 minutes—they fly. My friend couldn’t run a single 4.5-minute mile, so his lack of knowledge about that topic led him to believe that he could just go out and win this race against professional athletes. That’s in essence what the Dunning-Kruger Effect is—you don’t know what you don’t know, which leads you to overvalue your competency. “That’s in essence what the Dunning-Kruger Effect is—you don’t know what you don’t know, which leads you to overvalue your competency.” In real estate, I see this often. We are in the Information Age where you can Google just about anything. I’m sure doctors have seen this as well: Many think that because they pulled information from WebMD, they know all about what’s wrong with them. In real estate, we have all this information in front of us, but the problem isn’t getting the information, but rather, knowing what to do with it. Quite frankly, after 12 years in this business, there are still houses, areas, neighborhoods, and problems that I still can’t say I know everything about. There are a lot of moving parts in real estate. So how does the Dunning-Kruger Effect apply to your life? Ask my wife—I am the worst about this. I often think I know more about a particular subject than I really do, and she is kind enough to remind me of that on a daily basis. Just remember that, as you’re going through your job, your relationships, and major life decisions, we can’t possibly know everything we need to know in order to make a perfect decision. We need the help of experts and the people around us to make important decisions, whether it’s about investing, healthcare, or real estate. If you have any questions or examples of the Dunning-Kruger Effect, feel free to reach out to me. I’d love to hear from you.
