In this episode, Mark runs solo to answer your questions about gear from his Dall Sheep hunt in Alaska. In addition to answering those specific listener questions, Mark has also published a "What's In My Pack?" video for all of the gear he took on this hunt. You can find that video, the full gear list spreadsheet, and more at the links below. QUESTIONS answered on this podcast... - What did you think of the Sitka Dewpoint rain gear that you used on your sheep hunt, compared to the First Lite Omen rain gear that you used on your mountain goat hunt? - What spotting scope did you use for the sheep hunt and would you recommend it? - What were the details of the sleep system used on your sheep hunt? - I heard you talk about "glacier travel" when I listened to your sheep hunt story. Is that common for sheep hunts? Can you talk more about what that is like? - Overall, how would you compare your sheep hunt and your mountain goat hunt in terms of terrain, difficulty, etc. - How were the water sources on your sheep hunt? What filtration system did you use? - What was your rifle setup? Caliber, scope, etc? - What model of Hilleberg tent were you using that got taken out by the wind? Looks like maybe the Niak? We talk duck calls this week, what is the best style call for beginners, do you need a single reed or a double reed? This is part 2 of the gear list we started last week! If you're a new waterfowl hunter trying to figure out what gear you need, it can be a struggle. In this podcast, I'll go over the gear I use and explain why I use it. However, I would encourage all new waterfowl hunters to take it slow, focus on learning how to hunt, and then start choosing gear that best fits their style of hunting. https://ducklandercalls.com/

Have you ever hiked in the pitch black night with nothing to guide you but your headlamp and a somewhat reliable GPS?  We've done more than our fair share of night hiking, but Whitney wins for being the most impressive, oppressive, and exhilarating! We scored a single-day permit for Mt. Whitney for July 31st of 2022! Now, what this means is that we were blessed with a 24-hour period in which to hike the tallest peak in the contiguous U.S.A., 14,505 ft of forests, creeks, and granite over ~23.5 miles up and back down with ~6,400 ft of total hiked ascent (according to my Garmin; 20.9 miles, 6,600ft according to AllTrails).  This trip was made extra-special by some dramatic weather that opened up on us with ~5 miles to go in our hike, resulting in washed out trails, washed out selves, and rockfalls booming down the mountain as though Thor was having a temper-tantrum. We loved a lot, learned a lot, and lucked out a LOT on this trip! I'm heading out on Sunday morning with Spencer to chase Mule Deer for a week in the alpine.  It's a new area for both of us and the weather is looking terrible.  The perfect recipe for a great hunt.  In this episode, I go through my entire gear list and get into the rationale for most of my decisions.  I'm going to be trying out the new Aerolite sleep system from Sitka on this hunt along with some other new gear so it should make for some good reviews when I get back.     Jay Nichol jay@mindfulhunter.com https://www.mindfulhunter.com/   Merch https://www.mindfulhunter.com/shop   Free Backcountry Nutrition Guide https://www.mindfulhunter.com/tools   Newsletter https://www.mindfulhunter.com/contact   IG https://www.instagram.com/mindful_hunter/   Podcast https://www.mindfulhunter.com/podcast

The dictionary defines survival as “the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances.” As Preppers, this is our primary goal even though each person has a unique vision of what that looks like for their life. The Prepper Journal's survival gear list is designed to help you “continue to live” in spite of “difficult circumstances”. But this equipment for survival is going to be general survival gear in a lot of respects. If you have most or all the items on this gear list, or some reasonable facsimile, you should be fine in a lot of emergency situations or “difficult circumstances”. Mitch and Kelsey make a packing gear list for their camping trips. They talk over their list and give pointers about different items. Mitch found a camping gear list online to see how theirs matches up. Men and women don't always have the same perspective on what "necessities" are when packing, but both agree that you should always take toilet paper on a hike...just in case
