Menopause is often referred to as "the change" and remains a complex and sensitive topic for many. Despite being historically under-discussed, it's crucial to address because of its profound impact on musculoskeletal health. Women are two to three times more likely than men to develop osteoarthritis, particularly around menopause. Changes in hormones, such as declining estrogen, can affect cartilage, bone density, inflammation, muscle health, and body weight - factors closely linked to joint pain and osteoarthritis symptoms. In this episode of the Joint Action Podcast, Dr. Ginny Mansberg, a GP and women's health expert, joins Prof. David Hunter to explore the intricate relationship between menopause and osteoarthritis. They discuss the physical and emotional challenges women face, including sleep disruption, weight gain, joint pain, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Dr. Mansberg shares valuable insights into how hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and lifestyle strategies, including exercise, can help manage symptoms and improve long-term health outcomes.Whether you're navigating menopause or supporting someone who is, this episode offers a compassionate, evidence-informed perspective on understanding and managing the journey.RESOURCESDr. Ginny Mansberg's website: DrGini.com.auDr. Ginny Mansberg's book - The M Word: How to Thrive in Menopause: https://drginni.com.au/products/the-m-word-how-to-thrive-in-menopauseCONNECT WITH USTwitter: @ProfDavidHunter @jointactionorgInstagram: @osteoarthritisresearchgroupEmail: osteoarthritis.research@sydney.edu.auWebsite: www.jointaction.info/podcast Hosted on Acast. How does an experienced women's health advocate struggle to recognise her own perimenopausal symptoms? Join me as I explore Johanna Wicks' journey from confusion to advocacy, sparked by Dr. Ginni Mansberg's enlightening book, "The M Word." Jo's story reveals a significant gap in women's health education and sets the stage for her influential role in the national conversation on menopause in Australia. Through powerful initiatives, Jo has reshaped the landscape of menopause awareness and policy. We'll take you behind the scenes of a groundbreaking event at Parliament House, where collaboration became the cornerstone of impactful change. Thanks to the support of the Parliamentary Friends of Women's Health, this initiative transformed into a successful Parliamentary Roundtable. Hear about the diverse voices that shaped the event, including Dr Ginni Mansberg and Professor Jayashri Kulkarni, and how their insights resonated with parliament members. These efforts laid the groundwork for ongoing meetings with experts and officials, paving the way for perimenopause to gain recognition at a national level. As advocacy goes global, we're urging you to leverage your voice and voting power to push for the implementation of 25 Senate inquiry recommendations on menopause. With an upcoming election, public pressure is key to ensuring women's health moves to the top of political agendas. We highlight the need for broader government action, such as a public awareness campaign for younger generations. Our conversation underscores the evolving narrative of menopause, from a hidden issue to a mainstream movement, fueled by passionate advocates and influential media initiatives. We wrap the episode up with the introduction of a new segment in which Jo and I unpack what's happening in the menopause zeitgeist in real time!Links discussed in this episodeEmail Template for sending to government, opposition and local members provided by WellfemmeArticle in The Guardian UK by Kate Muir on bone healthThe (M) Factor Film by Tamsen FadalThe M Word Book by Dr Ginni MansbergThank you for listening to my show! There was a time soon after having my first daughter, in the depths of sleep deprivation and baby brain, and I was staying at my brother and sister-in-law's house, and I really needed a cup of tea. So, I somehow put their electric kettle on a gas top stove … and lit it… almost setting their kitchen on fire. (Sorry Tomo and Anj!) I also recall not being able to recall simple words - like looking at a toaster and thinking, “Yeah…what is that called?” and constantly trying to pay for groceries with a Medicare card. Right. So, how do we know the difference between cognitive decline and old age… or just a lack of sleep? And what are the simple steps we can take now to save our precious brain. Well, Dr Ginni Mansberg is a GP, well-known TV host - you've probably seen her on Channel 7's Sunrise and The Morning Show, and a best-selling author. And her new book is called Save Your Brain. Ginni interviewed 22 brain experts around the world to find easy-to-implement strategies to keep our brain functioning at its best. Her book looks at the fact that almost half of all cases of cognitive decline could have been prevented or delayed and that dementia is the leading cause of death in women. Plus, the role anxiety, depression, peri and menopause play. In true Dr Ginni style, her advice is upbeat, practical and fun. From sleep, to burnout, and the importance of connection and working, Ginni gives us a smorgasbord - an all-you-can-eat buffet - of ways to help save our brain. And just a reminder, if you ever need it Lifeline's crisis support service is available any time of the day or night on 13 11 14 .SHOWNOTESDr Ginni's book Save Your Brain: https://www.booktopia.com.au/save-your-brain-ginni-mansberg/book/9781922616340.htmlDr Ginni's website: https://www.drginni.com.auDr Ginni's Instagram: @doctorginniSupport the showWe love that you're listening! What if you could change your perspective and embrace menopause as a positive transition rather than dreading it? Buckle up, as we, Sonya and Roma, challenge the fear-based narrative often associated with perimenopause and menopause, particularly on social media. We delve into the confusion caused by brands misusing the term 'peri' and the dire need to educate and inform women, especially in their mid to late 30s, about the onset of perimenopause. We're not just stopping there; we're also standing up for better education and healthcare standards on women's health, specifically around menopause and perimenopause. We discuss the pressing need for enhanced training for GPs and clinicians and the establishment of national standards for information dissemination and education. Doing so, would provide women with reliable sources and eliminate the compulsion to rely on potentially misleading social media content. In this final segment, we explore the cavernous gap in support and knowledge around managing menopause. We pay tribute to the invaluable contributions of healthcare professionals like Dr Ginni Mansberg,  Dr Kelly Teagle, Dr Louise Newson, and Dr Avrum Bluming in this field. We discuss the impacts of the menopausal transition, the fear-based narratives often seen on social media, and the lack of options in education and regulation around menopause and perimenopause.
