100 Episodes in the Sexy Ageing Podcast! And how fitting that I get to speak with Niki Bezzant, Author of “This Changes Everything: the honest guide to menopause and perimenopause” and “The Everything Guide: Hormones, Health and Happiness in menopause, midlife and beyond” for the 100th episode and the final one for 2024. Niki and I have had quite similar perimenopause experiences, but as we know, it's different for every woman. We also wanted to review the state of menopause the past few years and ultimately highlight that research, care and support IS getting better and yet there is still so much that needs to be done. This is a JUICY episode and we discuss: Our Hormone Therapy (HT) experiences and the symptoms that sent us to the doctor for help. What worked and what didn't. Body shape changes and how we feel about it. The lifelong challenge women have with body image and how menopause can help or hinder. Niki's overview from the recent International Menopause Society Conference - how menopause is complicated - the data and research gaps - what the world knows and doesn't know about menopause - new and promising interventions - when to start HT - and the importance of exercise during menopause. Medical social media influencers and how they help, or not! “Menowashing” pros and cons and do the supplements work? Diets - what are the best and worst during menopause. Healthy aging and gendered ageism and what this actually means for women. It's a LOT! Niki and I could have spoken for hours and I'm so grateful that we do make the time to catch up to share what we have learnt and help other women. It's been a while since I've had a conversation with another woman in her menopause life stage. About 10 months ago, Tarryn accidentally went viral on TikTok with a clip about her perimenopause journey—because apparently, the universe thought she hadn't had enough surprises for one lifetime. Fuelled by a desire to make sure other women didn't face the same blindsiding, she kept the conversation going, mixing in her own life stories, quirks, and a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour. Tarryn's unfiltered honesty and willingness to show off her imperfections have turned her into the relatable, ‘so-not-Instagram' character that women didn't know they were missing. PMDD - Pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder, can affect up to 20% of the female population yet very little is known about it. Many of us can attest to PMS symptoms throughout our monthly cycles and 1 in 5 women may be experiencing hormonally driven symptoms that can seriously impact their quality of life. I spoke with Dr Ceri Cashell, MBCHB MRCP MRCGP FRACGP, GP Principal (Avalon Family Medical Practice) in Australia about PMDD. The questions I asked her: 1. What is PMDD and how is it diagnosed? 2. When it comes to menopause, how does PMDD affect women? 3. What are your top recommendations to support women who might be struggling with PMDD and in menopause? Kirstin Bouse is a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist with nearly 3 decades of experience. Over the past 15 or so years, she's found herself working with women as they navigate big transitions in their lives - motherhood, divorce and perimenopause. Six years into her own perimenopause experience, along with a late-diagnosis of ADHD (after all 3 sons were diagnosed as teenagers and young adults - yep, she was late to the party for them too) and burnout, Kirstin became super frustrated by the lack of recognition of the significance of perimenopause and midlife in general. Let alone the double whammy of perimenopause and ADHD. In this episode, we discuss: - what exactly is ADHD? - the differences in ADHD between the sexes - the process of getting a diagnosis for ADHD - why is it that women in perimenopause might start to question if they have ADHD? - what support can one expect once they have an ADHD diganosis YOU CAN CONNECT WITH KIRSTEN HERE ALL ABOUT HER CLINIC --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tracy-minnoch/message

“It's insulting how a supplement brand can pop out ONE product to fix ALL your symptoms - we aren't about that” Kirsty Strowger From beauty to colon hydrotherapy to one of Australia's leading women's health supplements companies, Kirsty Strowger is the OG hustler, business maven, and health trend spotter. With long-held passions for inner health and natural healing, Kirsty Strowger started Nature's Help 2012 as a weight loss supplement manufacturer with over 400 Australian stockists. In 2020 Kirsty started to work on an idea to get women more engaged with each other around the topic of menopause. Kirsty then set about doing what she does best. She designed something amazing for the women who created the world's population. Body dysmorphia, a distressing psychological condition, manifests as a distorted perception of one's appearance. This internal struggle becomes even more prevalent among midlife women, who face unique challenges in a society obsessed with youth and beauty standards. The pressures of ageing, hormonal changes, societal expectations, and the influence of social media intensify the impact of body dysmorphia during this transformative stage of life. I was so excited to interview Penny Ashton - a New Zealand based, self-employed performer, poet, podcaster, writer and wedding celebrant to discuss our unique experiences with body dysmorphia and how we have come to the wonderful conclusion that we have NO F***S LEFT TO GIVE. We discuss (in no particular order) porn, Jane Austen, impostor syndrome, diets, Jenny Craig, liposuction, bodybuilding, THAT Gwyneth Paltrow interview, selfie angles, clothing sizes and slut shaming. Sanjith and I connected over LinkedIn and the topic "menopause". My curiosity was piqued. I'm used to seeing fellow GenX women building resources and advocating for better menopause care at work and home, so to speak with Sanjith who has invested in menopause care, was brilliant. Sanjith is obviously passionate about helping the 150 million women in India in menopause, but he's not planning on stopping there! By 2025, there will be 1 billion women globally in the menopause life stage and there is much work to be done to support them. I'm voting for Sanjith as "Male Menopause Advocate of the Year", joint award with my ever supportive husband, Dave Nuku. Following on from Episodes 74 and 75 with women who have experienced a hysterectomy and been thrown into surgical menopause, I unpack this topic with Dr Linda Dear, MBBS, FRNZCGP, BA (Hons) Psychology, DRCOG, NCMP and NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioner. Linda answers the following questions (and more): * What exactly is surgical menopause? * What are the reasons a woman would have a hysterectomy? * What's the difference between a natural and surgical menopause? * What do women need to know about post surgery care and the onset of menopause? * How does HRT support surgical menopause and how is it used? * And what about testosterone? Warning: there is a discussion that touches on sexual abuse that may be triggering Rebecca E Chandler is an author and survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Her book “It Won't Hurt None – A Story of Courage, Healing, and a Return to Wholeness” details her journey from the depths of trauma to a place of hope and healing, offering a roadmap for others who are struggling with similar issues. In the book, she shares how she struggled with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and was often misdiagnosed by medical professionals. However, through years of therapy and self-reflection, Rebecca was able to heal and reclaim her voice and her power. In addition to her memoir, Rebecca has also written a companion journal called “Hurt No More – Grow a Foundation for Healing”. Emilie Joyal is a French Canadian living in New Zealand. Faced with a diagnosis for endometriosis and pre-cancerous cells on her ovaries, Emilie was advised to have a hysterectomy at 40. Emilie shares her experience and advice for women considering having a hysterectomy and we discuss, at length, the effects on woman's hormones and the inevitable acceleration into menopause. Emilie's experience was confusing and traumatic, as it often is for women when they don't have the full information they need to go through surgery, recover well and feel supported as they enter forced menopause. As I come closer to 24 months of podcast episodes for Sexy Ageing, it feels like my list of questions are getting longer! one of the BIG questions is "How are women in other countries, cultures and belief systems managing their menopause?" A very general question that has a lot to unpack! In this episode, I'm starting with South Asian women and I interviewed Dr Shashi Prasad, an Indian Hindu rational living and working in the UK. Dr Shashi is a very experienced GP, British Menopause Society accredited Advanced Menopause Specialist and Board- Certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician. She has worked in the NHS and privately for many years providing a high standard of care to her patients. During her work as a GP, she noted a huge unmet need for good quality menopause care. This motivated her to start her journey as a menopause specialist and complete her training from King's College Hospital, one of the leading menopause centres in the UK. In this episode, we discuss: * Dr Shashi's motivation to train as a menopause specialist * The differences for women in ethnic minorities accessing information, having conversation and support from their doctors. * Dr Shashi's personal experience with menopause and the incidence of South Asian women seeking her help. * The higher risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes in South Asian women and how menopause symptoms affect midlife health. * The complete lack of resources in Hindi language - is there a menopause symptom tracker for other languages? * The main menopause symptoms of South Asian women. I'm looking forward to speaking with more women on the topic of Race, Culture and Menopause for a more inclusive conversation. When you speak to someone who's symptoms start in their late 30's, it's a bloody wake up call! In this episode, we: * compare symptoms and perimenopause experiences * discuss the struggle to get motivated * talk about feelings of isolation * unpack the role of a menopause support coach * decide if menopause is "trending" Becks is a trained and practicing physiotherapist, an accredited Menopause Support Coach and helps other women going through perimenopause with her knowledge, skills and lived experience.
