I'm recording live (well, semi-live) while running through mossy, Jurassic Park-like trails outside Portland. Just minutes in, I round a corner and meet a man with a blood-covered hand telling me someone stabbed his dog with a switchblade. So naturally... I kept running.Support our sponsors, janji.com, garagegrowngear.com, and Csinstant.coffeeIn this chaotic on-foot monologue, I dive into the Gorge Waterfalls 100K, which just happened to be the USA Trail Team selection race for the Mountain Ultra Trail World Championships. I talk through the carnage (the race kind), recap the course records smashed by Adam Peterman, Shea Aquilano, and others, and reflect on how trail running might be entering a new competitive era. Then, I join up with Derek Lytle post-race to break it all down: the athletes, the coverage, the waterfalls, and the fact that every race we've filmed has somehow produced course records. Coincidence? Probably. But we're claiming it anyway.Also... there's a very old cat named Blackberry.Chapters00:00 A Run Through the Unexpected03:03 Trail Running Championships and Team USA05:50 Gorge Waterfalls Race Recap09:01 Record-Breaking Performances11:56 Looking Ahead: Future Races and CompetitionsSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comKeywordstrail running, Gorge Waterfalls, USA Trail Team, championships, record-breaking, running safety, outdoor adventures, race recap, competitive running, athlete insights

Hannah Allgood is originally from Wisconsin but has lived in Colorado Springs since 2016 with her husband Gil and vizsla, Gunner. She works as a pediatric sports medicine physical therapist at Children's Hospital Colorado and began trail running in 2019 because of Gil. That same year she ran her first 50k, The Dirty Thirty. Hannah enjoyed the 50k-100k distances the most, but is looking forward to eventually running a 100 miler. She holds the course records for the Fall Back Blast 50k, Indian Creek Fifties 55k, and Gorge Waterfalls 100k. When she is not running, she enjoys hiking with her dog, baking desserts, and reading. The thing she loves most about trail running is being outside for long hours with her friends. This was a fun conversation; Hannah is full of positivity and energy. We discuss how she has evolved as a trail runner since her first race in 2019. We also talk about self-doubt and importance of believing in yourself. We dive into the impact coaching has had on her, both mentally and in running. We chat about the importance of strength training. Hannah takes us through her recent Gorge Waterfalls 100k win. Hannah is one to watch, she has some big things coming up. I loved this quote from her “later becomes never” she definitely embraces that. IG - @shesallgood21
In this episode I chat with professional ultra trail runner Ellie Pell. Ellie is a very accomplished distance runner, she is a 2:41 marathoner, she has won and been on the podium at a ton of ultra trail races, primarily on the BEAST coast where she calls home, but recently she has burst onto the ultra scene with a 2nd place finish at the Bandera 100k, 3rd place finish at the Gorge Waterfalls 100k, and an impressive 14th place in her first 100 miler at the prestigious Western States 100. MERRY STATESMAS! It's Western States week and a shit ton of our friends are running it this year! First up, Ellie Pell makes her like 300th appearance on the pod, she's basically a regular. She's also super humble so we will brag for her- she's going to freaking slay it. She talks about her training, her awesome build up, her three podiums at big races (Bandera 100k for the Golden Ticket, Chuckanut 50k and Gorge Waterfalls 100k) and that she is NOT AFRAID. Ellie runs hard on nothing but her love for the Beast Coast and Aldi's snacks. I give her bad advice and we talk the virtues of Corn Flake consumption. Then we holla at Steve LaBranche and he might put some sandwiches in his pants, or he might run The Grand Slam of Ultrarunning this summer. Either way dude is a badass and has a practical approach to running a lot of hundreds in a short amount of time. This is Steve's second WSER start and #2 of his Summer of 100s (has already run Old Dominion, then Western States and Vermont, and finally Wasatch). Last up is THE DESTROYER Tom Starodaj. Tom's strengths are his actual running, followed by his signature short shorts, his dope ultra beard and finally his insanely awesome crew. All stalwarts in the local scene, not to mention Patreons for YEARS they will have our dude on point for all 100.2 miles. Marc "Machine Gun" Kelly, Stefan "Mr Ragged Himself", Julia "The Thrasher" and Tha Homie Bessic all chime in with some behind the scenes Q and A that is not all awkward. We are excited to welcome another Couple of the Quarter - Jennifer & Matt Hoadley! Jenn & Matt met in college in Maine and now live just south of Boston, MA with their two children. While Jenn ran track as a child and into college, Matt didn't discover his love for running until shortly after he got sober and became a recovering alcoholic in 2013. Kim met both Matt and Jenn at Gorge Waterfalls in April of this year, and in one short evening discovered they both have an incredible story to share. In this episode, we discuss:Matt's realization he needed to make a big change after he hit bottomHis decision to get sober cold turkeyHow Matt started and Jenn returned to running later in lifeHow running has become a big part of their lives as they now run 100 milers together! How they keep their running passion in check and work together to stay in balance in a sport that doesn't lend itself well to moderationWe also discuss the paradox of how ultrarunning attracts many in recovery, and how the sport also ironically has a strong beer culture.Jenn and Matt have been through a lot together and they have come out of life's challenges stronger than ever, both as a couple and as runners. OK, so it's been a teeny bit longer than a month….what can I say, it's hard to pin the Legend down these days! And then when you do, his audio quality is shit….but I digress. Back before the COVID-19 pandemic set in here in Oregon, Peak Northwest co-host Jim Ryan schemed up a mission: try to see as many Columbia River Gorge waterfalls as possible — from sunrise to sundown. He recruited co-host Jamie Hale and video producer Brooke Herbert, and they headed out to the gorge. By sundown, they’d seen 16 waterfalls — and captured each of them on camera. This week on the Peak Northwest podcast, Jim and Jamie relive the trip, which spanned from Vista House to Starvation Creek Falls.
