Wicked. The Brutalist. Anora. These did NOT make our Favorite Films List of 2024. Sorry... We put 2024 out to pasture by naming our Favorite Movies of the Year, our Biggest Letdowns, Favorite Performances, and more! Yup, it's a big ol' end of year type show... at the beginning of the year. Hey-o! Along the way, we also manage to crap on all your favorite awards shows, learn a secret about the capuchin monkey actor who plays Dondas, and try to sneak The Penguin onto our Top 10 Lists even though this a movie show. Mark also gives us the mother of all rants about snooty critics dismissing Gladiator II and modern day Ridley Scott. This ain't your usual stuffy Top 10 List show. We got real stuff to say, people! Big thank YOU for listening and sticking with us for another year. Happy New Year, everyone. Let's watch some movies. Wanna be on the show? Call us and leave a voicemail at (707) 948-6707. Join Leo and me as we journey into the realm of Black Mirror, analyzing the societal implications of the Netflix series and its portrayal of our obsession with social media. We unpack the episode "Nosedive", examining its depiction of influencers, the burden and blessings of their platforms, and whether the show is a critique or an exaggeration of modern society. Listen as we share our insights into the role of recurring actors, and discuss the performance of Latisha Roy in "Black Museum", and how it propels the conversation about technology's impact on marginalized communities. Brace yourself as we step into the interactive world of "Bandersnatch" and debate how it gives the illusion of choice while actually leading to decision paralysis. We analyze how episodes like "Jonas Awful" and "Law Henry" draw attention to the exploitative nature of true crime, and discuss the nuances of Netflix's terms and conditions. Furthermore, we explore the concept of free will in Bandersnatch and share our thoughts on its many, somewhat disappointing, endings. Lastly, we move on to discussing our favorite performances and TV shows, with Daniel Kaluya's performance in "50 Million Merits" and Aaron Paul's performance in "Beyond the Sea" taking center stage. We also explore how seasoned actor, Andrew Garfield, outshone others in the movie "Tick, Tick, Boom". Wrapping up, we list our top 5 Black Mirror episodes and eagerly anticipate future seasons. Let's say you are starting a record label. Money is no object, and every artist and band in the world is a free agent. Who would you pick? That's the premise of this week's episode. (31:21) This wholly original idea involves selecting acts that fall into five categories: prestige (they don't stream big but they get great reviews), popular (they don't get great reviews but they stream big), solo artist under the age of 28 (an up-and-comer you can lock in for a long time), band with three or fewer albums (ditto), and sacred cow (an act you sign because you love them). Before Steven and Ian get to the draft, they talk about this weekend's Pitchfork Festival — Ian is going and Steven is not — and their favorite performances from previous festivals (4:44). They also address some non-indie rock topics: The terrible new Jason Aldean song (13:40) and the history of reactionary country hits that crossover into the mainstream for culture war reasons, and the forthcoming "Summer Of '99" cruise (23:46) featuring a reunited Creed plus a head-scratching mix of post-grunge and radio-friendly pop rock from the late '90s.In Recommendation Corner (57:54), Ian talks about the new book by Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly, while Steven chats up the new album by Texas surf-punks Being Dead.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Host Betty Jo Tucker reviews Danny Collins and Manglehorn, two recent movies starring Oscar-winner Al Pacino. Plus, noted film critics James Colt Harrison and Diana Saenger drop by to talk about their favorite Pacino movies and performances. Considered by many to be one of the greatest actors in all of film history, Pacino began his movie career in Me, Natalie, a 1969 motion picture starring Patty Duke, Elsa Lancaster and James Farentino. He now boasts over 50 acting credits on IMDb. His awards include a Best Actor Academy Award for Scent of a Woman and additional Oscar nominations for Dog Day Afternoon, Glengarry Glen Ross, Dick Tracy, The Godfather, Serpico, And Justice For All and Godfather: Part II. 2015 has been a very good year for Pacino. His impressive performances in Manglehorn and Danny Collins are winning rave reviews. He nails both characters and makes viewers care what happens to them despite the many mistakes they’ve made in the past. Manglehorn’s destructive obsession and Danny Collins’ relentless search for redemption seem so real because of Pacino’s ability to get inside each man’s heart and soul.
This weeks show is possibly the funnest and funniest. Also, it's possibly the most controversial with an American Psycho bombshell being dropped. This week we discuss all the stuff we've watched and our favorite genre performances. Listen and enjoy!
