Life is messy. Things happen that just don't make sense. Emotions run high and things get said that ruin relationships. Friends and family members we love and trust do things that hurt us and we do the same to them. We do things that we know aren't right, we lie and allow our perspective to dictate what we believe to be true. And that's just scratching the surface of the complicated nature of our relationships! I didn't even touch on the realities of politics domestic and abroad, international relations, or historical realities. Life. Is. Messy. It's part of living in this world as broken and marred by sin as ours is. But thankfully, mercifully, and sovereignly, God's Word reflects the brokenness of our world and cuts through it with truth we desperately need. As we continue our look at the life of David in our series "The Great Exchange" we come to a passage of Scripture that is complicated to say the least. It's high on the list of most hard-to-read, and gets to the heart of our brokenness, the complicated nature of life, the unfortunate reality of betrayal, and the devastatingly deplorable results of sin. But in the midst of the deep darkness of this story, the light of God's sovereignty shines through, and gives us a hopeful confidence to cling to in the messiness of life. How ever your week has gone, whatever burden you're carrying from the week behind, God has truth for us to cling to in our brokenness. And rather than seeking answers to all our questions, we seek instead to live in the light of Christ's cross, where good reigns eternal amidst the dark and evil chaos of the world he came to save. Chad Bird, Limping with God: Jacob and the Old Testament Guide to Messy Discipleship
Wrestling with God is part of the journey of faith. Sometimes it is because of our stubbornness or sin. Other times it is because the circumstances of life are unfair and draining. And there are times when our wrestling with God changes who we are. In this last week of our series, we will peak in on Jacob as he sleeps under the stars and gets a surprising visitor at night - one who forever changes his life.
God said that we have held out trough the night, but now was the time, like the Angel of the Lord told Jacob, to let go, and let God… Jacob refused to let go and asked for a blessing, and his name was changed to Israel, the God struggler. It is alright to be a God struggler, it is what He calls his people, because we have struggled with God and man and have overcome. Jacob saw God face to face (presence to presence) there and his life was changed. Positioning yourself is putting your life where God's face would burn you. After staying and struggling through the night, God says “it is time” at daybreak, meets with us, and changes us. We go through stages, first coming to church, the house of God, then we meet up with his presence, the face of God, and then come the realization that we serve the God of the House, bringing it all together. Looking at the history of Ruth and Naomi, we see that Ruth's name means friend or companion and by going back to Israel with Naomi and completely identifying with her new nation, she was exactly that. Being in difficulties, these two widows positioned themselves there where everything could be solved, first by gleaning on the edges of the fields and eventually Ruth laid down at the feet of her redeemer, Boas, in the evening. When he awoke in the middle of the night, she requested that he, being her redeemer, spread the corner of his garment over her and make right that which was wrong. In the same way we put our presence and lives in God's presence and have him, as our redeemer, spread his garment over us, and make everything right which is wrong.
“I'm kind of a genius.” James 1:19-22 // My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. Most Christians are hypocrites. “84% of non-Christians say they know a Christian personally, yet only 15% say the lifestyles of those believers are noticeably different in a good way.” - David Kinnaman 900 Which one is best? The one you obey. Teleios - Mature, Perfected, Complete James 2:14-17 // What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. The Bible knows nothing of a fruitless faith. Faith & Works FAITH: Belief in action Abel brought an offering Noah built an ark Abraham left his home and offered up Isaac Sarah trusted God Jacob blessed his grandsons Joseph instructed about his burial Moses chose to be mistreated Rahab welcomed the spies WORKS: Literally deeds 3 TYPES OF FAITH: 1. Dead Faith James 2:15-17 // Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. 2. Demon Faith James 2:18-19 // But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. 3. Dynamic Faith James 2:20-26 // You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God's friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Author and scholar Chad Bird joins our podcast again, this time to discuss one of his newer books, Limping with God: Jacob & the Old Testament Guide to Messy Discipleship. This book guides us through the stories of the Patriarch Jacob, a rare biblical account which documents a life from in utero until death. His multi-faceted and sometimes frustrating personality gives us a mirror in which we can see ourselves: lying and fighting to get ahead, taking advantage instead of showing mercy, looking out for ourselves while God looks for us. Be encouraged by the fact that God specializes in saving sinners and calling highly-imperfect people (like Jacob) to be His disciples. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome” (Gen. 32:28).https://www.1517.org/https://www.tiktok.com/discover/chad-bird-1517https://www.1517.org/podcasts/40-minutes-in-the-old-testament Bookshttps://shop.1517.org/collections/books/chad-birdhttps://a.co/d/2P25n1gHebron is considered one of the oldest cities in the Levant. According to the Bible, Abraham settled in Hebron and bought the Cave of the Patriarchs as a burial place for his wife Sarah. Biblical tradition holds that the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, along with their wives Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah, were buried in the cave. Hebron is also recognized in the Bible as the place where David was anointed king ofIsrael. The attached photos were taken on our Sept. 2023 Homesick for Israel Tour. The story of Jacob in the book of Genesis is marked by two miraculous meetings with God: Jacob's ladder and Jacob wrestling with God. Between those two events, Jacob spends two decades in his uncle Laban's household working to earn the favor of God. Spoiler Alert! God's favor cannot be earned-- that's true for Jacob and it's true for you!

Sometimes our faith walk is compared to a race, but as we get bogged down with the struggles and challenges of life, we find ourselves limping, and most days, we sense that the Lord is carrying us and holding us up as we limp through life. In this episode, Michelle sits down and talks to Chad Bird, about his most recent book, Limping with God: Jacob & the Old Testament Guide to Messy Discipleship. Chad talks about: Why he wrote the book What he learned while writing the book, this was a fun fact to learn. How forgiveness is dying to ourselves and how God helps us to forgive Chad explains what fruitful winters are. We also talk about Jacob's ladder and how the story is different and better than the one we probably learned in Sunday School. Continuing in this series in Genesis on "The messed up family of God" Jacob is tricked by Laban into marrying both daughters, Leah and Rachel. Rachel is Jacob's favorite, yet God blesses Leah with four children first. The names given to the children reveal how the two sisters feel in jealousy that has emerged. And God chooses to build his blessings through some of the less favorite. Through the line of the youngest son of the "less loved Leah" the king David is chosen and in due time Jesus is born. Yet he is described as "despised and rejected of men", The world chooses favorites, but God chooses otherwise. Speaker: Ron Irving

Rev. Green continues a new Sermon Series entitled, Understanding Yourself to Love God. During this series, personality types will be explored to shed light on how to get to know yourself. In turn, this helps us to know and understand God's divine love. In our first lesson, we learned about the Perfectionist. This week, we focus on the personality traits of those who feel the need to succeed and who feel that personal worth is equated with the work they do.
We like to think that we have life handled and under control. Maybe not all the time, but generally speaking we think our way of doing things is the best way. We want to be the masters of our own domain and we definitely don't like the idea of anyone else that we need to answer to. Even when that someone else is God. This week we look at Jacob. A man who would do almost anything to get ahead and insisted on trying to control his own destiny. He was willing to cheat to get what he wanted and it took a long time for him to learn that we reap what we sow. Humility was not something he prioritized and neither do we. We love ourselves a little too much sometimes. We think a little too highly of ourselves and our ways. We resist God and rely on our own ways and traditions when his way is always the right one.We need to humble ourselves before God. Jacob discovered this truth and we will too one day. The sooner the better. This is the 10th instalment in our Heroes of Faith preaching series at Mountainview and this week we learn more about humility vs. resistance and where both lead us.#bible #humble #God #Jacob #heroes #hero #heroesoffaith #faith #faithheroes #Jesus #hebrews #hebrews11Mountainview Church carries the necessary Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) license to play and perform the contained Christian worship songs. Anyone who has ever struggled with the pitfalls of life knows what it's like to wrestle with God. It's those exhausting times when we deal with people, circumstances and faith — and especially our hearts — that require intense effort that connects deep within our souls.Thankfully, we're not alone in these personal battles. And such adversity is nothing new in the human experience. In fact, the Bible is filled with the true stories of men and women who grappled with their Creator. Over the next few weeks, we'll look at five people in Scripture who did just that, and what their stories mean for us in our own struggles.
Genesis 35 is a huge transitional chapter in Jacobs life. Here in the first few verses, we see God Jacob coming out of a very traumatic episode with his family and having God show up to help give him direction. How are you doing? Are you on course with God? Jacob was not all together there, and his family most certainly was NOT.

Richard Bray preaches on Genesis 48:1-49:28.
In this series we'll be looking Biblical figures who wrestled through life with God. Today we kick off with the man who set the standard for what that means..
Matt Endersby preaches on Genesis chapters 46-47.
And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. (Genesis 32:24-30) That’s all that matters here, as long as God comes and answers, as long as we recognize it to be God… Jacob, another character, he was caught between two occasions. He had done some mean things, some sneaky little tricks to his—his father-in-law, Laban. And he was running from his father-in-law, going back home to mama. And when he come to find out, here come his brother that he had done some dirty little tricks to, was coming, meeting him with an army. Just remember, “Your sins find you out.” And then Jacob, all disturbed, and perplexed, and in trouble, set his wives across the little brook, went back on the other side in a unexpected place, and an unexpected time he met God in an unexpected way. What a way to meet God: in a wrestling match. But it was God. Regardless of whether He’s in a burning bush or a wrestling match, It was God. 11 And the main thing was, that Jacob… He’d had dreams and visions and so forth, but this was one time he could lay his hand on something and say it’s God. And he was able to hold onto it until the blessing came. Oh, if we could do that, if we could find a spot to where we could see God, whether it’s in His Word, wherever it is, and recognize it’s God, and hold onto it until the blessing comes… Wrestle it out with God. God promised to do it. God said if we’d seek, we’d find; ask, and it shall be given; knock, it’ll be open. Every Word is true. When Jacob got a hold of something that he could look at, hold to with his hands, and seen that it was God, he would not turn it loose. 12 Oh, if Christiandom could do that. If you can lay your hand a hold of something that’s real, catch a vision of God and see His Presence, and hold onto it until God sends the answer back and the blessing, what a revival would break out here in Tulsa, if people could do that, could see the power of the living God, something real. No matter what form He comes in, we have our ideas. But God has a way of a sending things to us, answering our prayer. 60-0326 - "The Unchangeable God" Rev. NUMBERS 8-9:In Numbers 7, we heard about the gifts given by the leaders of Israel following the dedication of the sacred tent. PSALM 31:Psalm 31 is a desperate, yet confident, prayer for protection. This prayer models the secret of effective prayer— praying with full belief in the Lord. LUKE 20b:Yesterday’s reading in first part of Luke 20 showed how the Jewish leaders tried to confront and discredit Jesus. I remember reading these passages in the summer after 6th grade and being so impressed with Jesus' wisdom. GNT Translation notes:[Who it is who does the ‘waving’ in this ‘wave offering’ is variously interpreted in 8:13. And it could be taken simply as a presentation, because it would be rather hard to ‘wave’ this object.]Num. 8:13 [NLT Then have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons, and raise your hands and present them as a special offering to the LORD.//HCSB: … and you are to present them before the Lord as a presentation offering.//CEV: They will stand at my altar in front of Aaron and his sons, who will dedicate the Levites to me.//GNT: “Dedicate the Levites as a special gift to me, and put Aaron and his sons in charge of them.]====Ps. 31:21 [Let everyone] Praise the Lord! How wonderfully he showed his love for mewhen I was surrounded and attacked!23 [Listen, all his faithful people: Love the Lord!//Love the Lord, all his faithful people.]The Lord protects the faithful, but punishes the proud as they deserve.24 Be strong, be courageous, all you [who//that] hope in the Lord.====Luk. 20:27 Then some Sadducees, [the religious party] who say that people will not rise from death, came to Jesus and said, NLT Translation notes:Num. 8:13 [NLT Then have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons, and raise your hands and present them as a special offering to the LORD.//HCSB: … and you are to present them before the Lord as a presentation offering.]]CEV: They will stand at my altar in front of Aaron and his sons, who will dedicate the Levites to me.] [Who it is who does the ‘waving’ in this ‘wave offering’ is variously interpreted.]====Ps. 31:21 Praise [you/the] LORD, for [you have//he has] shown me the wonders of [your/his] unfailing love.[You have//He] kept me safe when my city was under attack.====Luk. 20:8 And Jesus responded, “Then I won’t tell you [either/0] by what authority I do these things.”16 “I’ll tell you—he will come and kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others.”[His listeners protested, “Oh, may such a thing never happen!”//“How terrible that such a thing should ever happen.”]19 The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. But they [did nothing because//0] they were afraid of the people’s reaction.23 He saw through their [duplicity/trickery] and said, 24 “Show me a Roman coin. Whose picture and title are stamped [here/0] on it?”37 “But now, as to whether the dead will be raised—even Moses proved this when he wrote about the burning bush. Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, he referred to the Lord d as ‘[the God Abraham worships//the God of Abraham], [the God Isaac worships//the God of Isaac], and [the God Jacob worships//the God of Jacob].’41 Then Jesus presented them with a [problem/question]. [“Note that there is a problem with the teaching that the Messiah will come as a descendant of David.”//”Why is it,” he asked, “that the Messiah is said to be the son of David?”]44 Since David called the Messiah ‘Lord,’ [it is clear that the Messiah cannot just be his descendant!//how can the Messiah be his son?]”

GENESIS 32-33: Yesterday we heard how Jacob and his big family got away from Laban and started the journey home. When Laban caught up with him, he and Jacob got into a quarrel and ended up making a covenant. JOB 19: In chapter 18, Bildad once again gave a speech about what happens to wicked people, and by implication, he said, “You're just getting what you deserve.” Job’s response in today’s chapter includes amazing revelations. Verses 23-27 can be compared with the second half of 1Corinthians 15. MARK 12a: In Mark 11, Jesus was welcomed in triumph in Jerusalem, he cursed a fig tree and taught about prayer, and cleansed the temple of merchant activity. Then he answered and confuted the chief priests who challenged his authority to “do these things,”— in particular, taking their businesses out of the temple. GNT Translation note: Mrk. 11:27 PET God spoke of our three forefathers as men who still live and worship Him. … NLT Translation notes: Job 19:15 My servants and maids [even/0] consider me a stranger. I am like a foreigner to them. 16 When I call my servant, he doesn’t [even/0] come; I have to plead with him! ==== Mrk. 12:1 Then Jesus began teaching them with stories [like this one]: “A man planted a vineyard. … 13 Later the leaders sent some Pharisees and supporters of [king/0] Herod to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested. 16 When they handed [one/it] to him, he asked, “Whose picture and title are stamped [here//on it]?” 26b Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, God said to Moses, ‘I am the God [Abraham worships//of Abraham], the God [Isaac worships], and the God [Jacob worships].’ 27 PET God spoke of our three forefathers as men who still live and worship Him. … [In Lumina.Bible.org Constable quotes Lane: “If the death of the patriarchs is the last word of their history, there has been a breach of the promises of God guaranteed by the [Abrahamic] covenant, and of which the formula ‘the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob’ is the symbol. It is in fidelity to his covenant that God will resurrect the dead.” Using a present tense verb makes it obvious to the English-speaking listener that the three patriarchs are still living. However, the problem becomes that if the Hebrew had been that specific, everyone would have understood that the patriarchs were still living. So my fix here, I now admit, goes too far.]

When Jacob was young his father killed his mother and changed his life forever. By the grace of God Jacob was sent to a loving home to live with his aunt and uncle. Through growing up in a loving home with a loving church that served him, Jacob learned the power of the Gospel to free him from being a victim. Now years later Jacob is a full-time missionary with Word of Life. He sat down with Jonathan and Tyler to talk about his past and what God has taught him along the way. He opens up about how the Gospel helped him to reach out to his father who is now serving consecutive life sentences in prison. Jacob explains how he was able to forgive and talks about his current ministry reaching the lost as a missionary in South Korea with Word of Life.
Daring to Draw Near to God | Jacob and the Stranger
On Father's Day Pastor Tim Birdwell continued in our series, "Broken People. Big God" looking at the life of Jacob. We talked about there being legacy in a limp, by men continuing to walk in the strength of Christ, even when life is difficult. We also took time to take up prayer requests for our men to lift them up in prayer all week.
Pastor Sam Rainer begins a new sermon series. This series covers Old Testament characters and uses them to explain how God draws us near. This sermon covers the character of Jacob in Genesis. God draws us near by exposing the true struggle in our lives. When we wrestle with God, we want something from God instead of God Himself. When we wrestle with God, our wounds are a sign of His grace. When we wrestle with God, we should obey even when it doesn’t make sense.
Do you really believe that God is Working for your good? In this story we see the 10 brothers of Jacob being tested, but we also see that Jacob is being tested too: Will Jacob trust God and revert to his old ways, or will he trust God and live his life in faith? Will Jacob be willing like his own grandfather Abraham when he offered up Isaac to the Lord- to entrust his only beloved son Benjamin into the hands of God? Jacob is having a whole new wrestling match with God - but Israel will win.
Sermon Questions: Do you think that in obtaining a blessing from God Jacob forced God to do something He never intended to do? Identify the areas that you have spiritually wrestled with God. What has been the outcome to those times? How can you apply the story of Jacob wrestling with God to your life?
