How the Price of Admission in Storytelling Creates Deeper Audience Connection

I'm coaching multiple speakers for an upcoming TEDx event. During the kickoff meeting with one particular speaker, I ask him, “Okay, what's your idea worth spreading?” He replies, “Kymberlee, that's easy. I'm going to talk about the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage.”  I think, “Wait, what? If this is what you're focusing on for your TEDx Talk, we definitely need to make 30-year fixed-rate mortgages interesting and shift the audience's perspective because this isn't a very sexy topic.”  So I ask him, “All right. What's your earliest memory related to money?” He tells me, “Well, when I was little, I used to go door-to-door selling acacia flowers. That's when I first realized that people would exchange dollars for something they value.”  I stop him right there and say, “That's the story we need to tell. It's how the audience will connect with you.” Once an audience cares about you, you've earned the right to teach them about what you care about. So he delivers his TEDx Talk and opens with his acacia flower story. Last week, his Talk hit one million views! And perhaps many of those viewers' perspectives on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages have changed as a result. Speaking of which, my guest Josh Lowman changes the public's point of view often and affects change with every organization and brand he works with. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll learn about the power of multiple story viewpoints, the price of admission in storytelling to create a deeper connection with your audience, and more. Josh will also answer questions such as: How can you think about point-of-view in story in a different way? What effect does authentic vulnerability in storytelling have on a platform where that's not typically expressed (like LinkedIn)? And why is change an essential element for stories? What you will learn in this episode: Why switching point-of-view is a powerful tool in capturing your audience's attention What admission price in storytelling is necessary to grow and resonate with an audience How you can become a much better writer and improve your storytelling sentence-by-sentence Who is Josh? Josh Lowman is the founder and CEO of Gold Front, a category design studio based in San Francisco, California. He has worked with more than 40 C-suite executives and teams to create new categories and market them to their customers. He believes that category design and creation provide the path for business owners and CEOs to cut through the noise and reach their audience. In a world where every startup is using innovative technology to disrupt the status quo, how can you ensure that your idea stands above the rest? Josh Lowman believes that the answer to cutting through the noise lies in category design and creation.  As founder of Gold Front, a San Francisco based category design studio, Josh has worked with over 40 C-suite executives and their teams to create new categories and market them to their customers.  Sneak peek: “To me, the definition of something that's disruptive is, it's categorically different,” says Josh. He argues that if you aren't creating a new category of solutions that can solve unique customer needs, you may be leaving critical opportunities (and dollars) on the table. Category design goes beyond product positioning; it's a North Star that executives can lean on “to animate and lead their entire company.” It's the core DNA of the business and requires company-wide support — from product to marketing to sales — in order to succeed.  Key discussions covered in this episode include: How to create a category in three stepsHow to market your category and convert customersCommon mistakes to avoid when creating a category3 key questions you need to ask when creating your categoryWhy category creation does not equal product positioningHow to weave your category story into your brand strategy Don't have all the time in the world? In this episode… Anna Furmanov of Modern Startup Marketing interviews Josh about the secrets of category creation—what he calls the Alchemy of Category Design. What is Category Design?  We start by talking about what exactly is category design, and talk about the three superpowers of category design that make it uniquely suited to help startups.  What are Category Design's biggest hurdles?  We rebut the perception category creation is too hard an endeavor for startups, and discuss how Gold Front understands the market timing for category creation. Welcome back! As you may have heard, I'm intrigued by category design. I've had both Christopher Lochhead and Andy Raskin on the show to chat more on the topic, and those are actually some of the more popular episodes on the podcast. Josh Lowman helps startups (like Robinhood, Newsela, Uber, Bizzabo, and Clari) create and own their category. I wanted to bring Josh onto the show and dig into exactly HOW he helps startups design categories and learn about some specific examples. Josh is Founder and CCO at Gold Front, a category design studio based in San Francisco and LA. He's also the host of the Category First podcast. Here's what we hit on: What does category creation mean to you (HINT: it's a whole company strategy); Exactly how you've helped different brands like Robinhood, Newsela, Uber, Bizzabo and Clari with category design. Where do you start? What does that process look like (HINT: everyone has a different context, but in common is to disrupt the old way of doing things); Why the CEO collaboration is key; What are the pitfalls or watch-outs if you're a startup planning to create and own a category; How does timing play into successful category creation? What needs to click out there in the world for this to work; Can everyone be a category creator (HINT: we're just keeping people honest. As a startup you're not telling your investors that you have something incrementally better); How did you bring category creation into Gold Front's business strategy; What are some goals you want to accomplish (personal, professional) in 2022. In this episode… We're launching a podcast, newsletter, and blog for category creators. Find out why we're going all in on category design, and why we created Category First. Here's a quote from Josh: “Founders are taught that category creation is too hard to do. It's crazy to me because every founder I know dreams of doing something big." Why Become a Category Creator? You'll capture more of the profits of your categoryYou'll be the category leader on Day 1You'll define how the category works, now and forever Category is important because it's how our minds make buying decisions, even before brand. First you think "I need a new car," then "I'll get a sedan," and only then would you think about which brand to buy.  Why A Category Design Studio? There are a few good category design consultancies out there, like Play Bigger, that focus on category strategy. There are also great brand studios.  We're the first to combine both under one roof.  This solves a big problem for startups: no longer do you have to hire a brand studio that doesn't understand your big ambitions to lead a category. We get you, and we do both! Why the Podcast? There's an urgent need for category design in the startup world. These ideas have the power to not only help startups grow, but become more purpose-driven.  This podcast exists to fight the idea of good enough.  We'll deliver knowledge, advice, and moral support to category creators everywhere.  We're going to pull back the curtain on what we do at Gold Front and share the tools, ideas, and principles we use to do strategy and design so you can apply them to your company and dream big.  Want to Learn More?
