We've all written those “perfect” behavior plans that look great on paper but somehow never make it off the clipboard. In this conversation, we dig into the real reason plans succeed or fail: buy-in. Because even the most data-driven plan doesn't matter if no one actually follows it.We share practical strategies for turning technical documents into living, breathing plans that teachers, parents, and teams want to use. From simplifying language and creating one-page cheat sheets to setting just two or three actionable goals at a time, we talk about how usability beats perfection every time.We also explore what collaboration really looks like in practice—inviting staff, caregivers, and even learners into the planning process so it becomes “our plan,” not just “the BCBA's plan.” Plus, we talk about how to build trust through modeling, ongoing support, and celebrating early wins, because a plan that feels supported is a plan that lasts. If you've ever struggled to bridge the gap between your beautifully written plan and the messy realities of implementation, this episode will help you rethink success, reframe your role, and create plans that truly get used.Join us for our next CEU event, “AI in Supervision: Time-Saving Tools for Busy BCBAs,” on Thursday, November 20th at 12pm ET. Summary In this episode, Andy interviews Dave Garrison, author of The Buy-In Advantage: Why Employees Stop Caring and How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Give Their All. We've all faced moments where our team seems checked out or disengaged. But what if the real issue is that they don't feel invited to care? Dave challenges conventional approaches to engagement and offers practical, actionable strategies for fostering true buy-in. In this conversation, Dave shares the difference between engagement and buy-in, how traditional methods like bribing or badgering can backfire, and how leaders can use curiosity, clarity, and inclusive decision-making to fuel commitment. You'll learn how to better structure meetings, make feedback more meaningful, and identify red flags that indicate declining motivation. If you're leading teams and looking to create cultures where people don't just show up but they fully buy in, this episode is for you! Sound Bites “It's not about satisfaction. It's about whether people are bringing their head, heart, and gut to work.” “Leaders go last all the time. Except when it comes to vulnerability. Then leaders go first.” “You don't know how you land unless you ask. And you can't ask in a way that intimidates.” "People support what they create." “PB&J? It stands for 'patiently badger and jam it down their throat.' And that doesn't work.” “Three is greater than seven when it comes to priorities. Many conversations were recorded over the weekend and we decided to start the collection with 4 past guests that have come back to update everyone on the exciting thing they are working on. First up is Vicki Thomas, owner of the 2 person lab, Signature Smiles by Vicki Thomas. Awhile ago Vicki wanted to help other small labs by creating a buy-in group that will allow other labs to get volume deals that large labs get to take advantage of. So Vicki started Savvy Lab Solutions (https://savvylabsolutions.com/), a group dedicated to getting good pricing on the things you need to run your lab. She talks about why she stated it and some of the vendors that have already seen what the power of numbers can do. https://savvylabsolutions.com/ Next up is the "voice" behind LMT, Becky Tyre. Becky comes on to talk about the newest thing LMT is doing, Soundbites (https://lmtmag.com/podcast). This short audio podcast highlights the current month's magazine. Becky talks about her background in radio, why they started the podcast, and why you should be listening. https://lmtmag.com/podcast Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0MX2VTKfT5bxVXq9s7dPFN Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/lmt-soundbites/id1745578142 We wrap up the episode to get an update on Katie Rinaldo & Mandy Area's push to make Denturist legal in Illinois.... and now in other states too! One of the top three biggest questions we get at Reality-Based Leadership is, How do I get my team to buy-in? How do I get them to buy into what needs to be done? How do I get them to buy into strategies? How do we get people to buy into changes the organization needs us to execute on? And the next question after that is, what do I do If I thought I had buy-in, and then it turned out it was fake, or it seems to be where people say they're bought in, but the behaviors are different? So in this podcast, Cy and Alex talk about this pattern, if it's happening and how you might be able to address fake buy in, how you can go after more buy in, and the truth is, buy in is the first step of accountability. It's about commitment. Buy in is a verb and if an individual isn't able to offer up their buy-in, it's really game over when it comes to happiness results in engagement at work. So Cy and Alex do all they can to come up with our best techniques to help you go after buy-in, secure buy-in, but remember you can only work with the willing, you can't buy someone else in, and this podcast will give you some techniques to figure out what's really going on.
