Building relationships is fundamental to turning around middle-market companies, according to SierraConstellation Partners (SCP) Founder and CEO Lawrence Perkins, as employees are “in the center of the bullseye [and] doing the work every day, taking the calls from the vendors, taking the calls from the analyst, the private equity sponsor...the direct lender.” In his feature interview with Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Noel Hebert and Phil Brendel (7:36), Perkins shares he's encountering more “distressed by accident” lenders these days, courtesy of the private credit boom, than the “distressed on purpose” ilk. He delves into the differences between Chapter 11, Article 9 sales, and Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (“ABC”). Prior to that, Hebert and Brendel open up with thoughts on April's market whiplash. The podcast concludes with BI's Negisa Balluku joining them for a roundtable discussion on Hertz, J&J, Ardagh, Franchise Group, Yellow Corp and Telesat (67:28). “LMEs buy time for the sponsor, but I'm increasingly seeing that that's all it really does.” Jon Weber, founder of JFW & Co., doesn't mince words regarding the effectiveness of the popular restructuring strategy. Liability management exercises leave executives with a “sword of Damocles” over their heads, failing to really fix anything and with an aftermath that remains a management distraction, Weber told Bloomberg Intelligence's Phil Brendel, in October's feature interview for the State of Distressed Debt podcast. Weber shared his perspectives, honed at Icahn Enterprises, Goldman Sachs and Elliott Management, on running effective boards and companies post-reorganization (6:30). Prior to that, BI's Noel Hebert and Phil discussed the complete dearth of distressed-debt inventory, as the distressed ratio plummeted to a 5.2% 28-month low in September. The podcast concludes with BI's Negisa Balluku joining Noel and Phil for a roundtable discussion covering J&J's latest Talc news, Hertz make-whole appeal, Audacy, Yellow, Tupperware, Telesat and what qualifies as a consensual release these days (59:00). Is Trudeau's $2B internet plan a political catastrophe in the making? Elon Musk calls it a scam, and I'm here to break down why. Justin Trudeau wants to SPEND BILLIONS of taxpayer money on a rural internet system provided by his Liberal friends. Why spend billions on a rural internet system when Starlink offers a cheaper solution? This is corruption at its finest. And watch Liberal House Leader Karina Gould squirm as she talks about how her sick government has nothing to offer Canadians but tears, sweat and toil.As Trudeau's government drifts, Canadians are left with tears, sweat, and toil. The TELESAT-l (ANIK C-1) communications satellite was deployed attached to the payload assist module (PAM-D) motor. SYNCOM IV-3 (also known as LEASAT-3) was also deployed but the spacecraft sequencer failed to initiate the antenna deployment, spin up and ignition of perigee kick motor. The mission was extended two days to make certain the sequencer start lever was in the proper position. Griggs and Hoffman performed a space walk to attach flyswatter devices to the remote manipulator system. Seddon engaged LEASAT lever using the remote manipulator system but the post deployment sequence did not begin. After re-entry and during the landing phase, a higher than normal cross wind had developed, causing extensive brake damage resulting in a blown tire prompting the implementation of nose wheel steering on the shuttle.Hoot Gibson's Hangar, aviation's premier podcast, hosted by America's premier aviator, Hoot Gibson, “The Man That Can Fly Anything."Don't miss a single episode. On this episode of the Connected Aviation Intelligence Podcast, executives from OneWeb, SpaceX and Telesat discuss the future of Low Earth Orbit (LEO)-powered in-flight connectivity for commercial airlines and business jet operators during an hour-long session at the 2022 Connected Aviation Intelligence Summit. Would LEO satellite networks be capable of providing connectivity to every airborne aircraft in U.S. airspace simultaneously at any given time in the future? Will more airlines be receptive to SpaceX's direct-to-airline LEO IFC equipment and service business model? What type of connection speeds, improvements in latency can LEO provide for connected in-flight passenger sessions? Will LEO satellites provide connectivity to airlines that fly polar routes? During this exciting session recorded live during the Connected Aviation Intelligence Summit last month, the following executives answer the above listed questions and more: Jonathan Hofeller, VP, Starlink Commercial Sales, SpaceX Philippe Scherlet, VP, Aviation, Telesat Jason Sperry, Market Development Director, Business Aviation, OneWeb Have suggestions or topics we should focus on in the next episode? This week's episode of Policy Speaking is literally out of this world and focused on the space economy. Our host Edward Greenspon (PPF's President and CEO) chats with Dan Goldberg, President and CEO of Telesat and the Honourable Navdeep Bains, former Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. They cover the importance of investing in space technology along with strategic changes in the industry and the difference between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and Geostationary (GEO) satellites. Dan Goldberg and the Hon. Navdeep Bains also examine the importance of public-private partnerships, Canada's contributions in the industry, and competition with other nations and corporations. Lastly, they debate policy implications, such as broadband connectivity, and even discuss whether they would explore space themselves! During Today in Policy, Katie and Edward discussed the new Omicron variant, vaccinating children in Canada, and space exploration. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated just how important strong and resilient healthcare is to all Canadians, and just how stressed our system is in many parts of the country. The Public Policy Forum is the think tank about tomorrow which is why we are keen to touch on timely issues of relevance to Canadians. Our podcast sponsor, Johnson and Johnson also knows how critical it is to provide strong healthcare services to Canadians and we thank them for their support of Policy Speaking. This episode included a #PPFProud shout out to EY for their Ripple's program, which aims to positively impact the lives of one billion people by 2030. Through this program, EY has provided consulting services with Habitat Canada to help them build equity and increase accessibility to safe and stable housing through stakeholder consultations, collaborations and an intensive review of their operations. So thank you EY, who has been a proud and active member of the Public Policy Forum for many years.

Constellations, a New Space and Satellite Innovation Podcast
On this Constellations Podcast, we'll talk about the exponential growth of Non-Geostationary-Orbit (NGSO) satellite constellations, their commercial and go-to-market plans, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in realizing a bandwidth filled future. Well over 50,000 NGSO communications smallsats are planned for launch over the next decade. SpaceX, Amazon Project Kuiper, SES, Telesat, OneWeb and many other constellation providers are promising to transform the space industry with thousands of NGSOs beaming tens of Terabits per second to the ground to satisfy a seemingly endless demand for bandwidth. During this episode, Nathan de Ruiter, the Managing Director of Euroconsult Canada will share insights into the go-to-market plans and commercial strategy for these NGSO constellations and the implications from a business model, cost, funding and ground segment perspective.
On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, we're featuring a replay of the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity panel from our Connected Aviation Intelligence program. The panel we're featuring is the “The LEO Revolution is Underway in Satellite: What Does it Mean for Airlines?” with guest speakers, Manik Vinnakota, Director, Commercial and Product Development, Telesat, Ben Griffin, Vice President, Mobility, OneWeb Satellites and Jonathan Hofeller, Vice President of Starlink Commercial Sales, SpaceX. We have seen major announcements from SpaceX, Telesat and OneWeb regarding their LEO constellations. The era of LEO is here and what does this mean for the airlines? Will they be looking at the LEO option much more seriously compared to traditional GEO satellites in the future? With a LEO revolution taking place in satellite, the panel examines how much of an impact these players could have in the IFC arena. By investing in cities, the commercial space industry can work wonders for local economies by creating new jobs, attracting new talent, and establishing long-term, future-facing tech hubs. That’s exactly what Canadian satellite operator Telesat plans to do for the province of Quebec. This past February, the government of Québec agreed to invest 400 million Canadian dollars ($316 million) in Telesat‘s new Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation in return for a $1.6 billion investment into Québec’s high-tech economy. Telesat will move most of Lightspeed’s manufacturing and operations to the Canadian province — a project that includes the establishment of a new network operating center; a satellite control center; a cybersecurity operations center; an engineering lab; an advanced landing station; and the creation of hundreds of new jobs. In this episode of On Orbit, Telesat Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager Stephen Hampton sits down with host Jeffrey Hill to discuss why Telesat decided to find a government investment partner and how it came to choose Quebec. We also talk about the returns on government investment and the expected impact Telesat Lightspeed will have on both the local and national Canadian economy.
In today's podcast: Canada's Telesat is in the race to launch a low-earth-orbit satellite constellation to provide high-speed global broadband from space. The Electronic Frontier Foundation today announced it had enhanced its HTTPS Everywhere browser extension by incorporating rulesets from DuckDuckGo Smarter Encryption. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/whatsnewonthenet/message
Constellations, a New Space and Satellite Innovation Podcast
In this episode of Constellations, we talk about the proliferation of LEO mega-constellations, and what this means for the market. These constellations have created a new paradigm, which stretches the scope of what satellite can accomplish – like offering lower latency with more ubiquitous coverage around the globe. Telesat Vice President of LEO Erwin Hudson joins the podcast to talk about these LEO mega-constellations’ role in a historically GEO-dominated market, opportunities for the future, and Telesat’s advanced LEO constellation, Telesat Lightspeed.
This week on The Space Update we're talking: ABL Space Systems launching in the UK, Telesat's Broadband constellation and United Arab Emirates Hope Mission has successfully entered Mars orbit! (more…)
We rarely get involved with the market, but some events cry out for comment. One such current event that will be evolving over the next several years involves SpaceX and the Starlink network which started with 60 satellites in 2019 and as of August 2020, has reached 653. Andy Snyder Andy Snyder, Founder, Manward Press discusses, with Don Witt, of The Channel Daily News, a TR publication, about the impact which would be huge. First, the 5G boom could go bust. We would no longer need short-distance cellular technology. It would be replaced by a connection that goes with us and follows us around. Who are the players in this market? Elon Musk and Starlink, of course. But there’s also Telesat, Iridium, Amazon and even maybe Apple. Who in the established internet would be most affected? They are all piling into 5G in a big way. If they misstep and satellites beat them to the finish line, they’re in trouble. Listen in to hear about this developing market. This market can have a huge upside and is one that needs to be watched. Andy Snyder is the founder of Manward Press, a premier source of unfiltered, unorthodox views on money and how the economy works. An American author, investor and serial entrepreneur, Andy used his MBA to cut his teeth at an esteemed financial firm with nearly $100 billion in assets under management. In the years that followed he became sought after for his outspoken market commentary. Andy and his ideas have been featured on Fox News, on countless radio stations, and in numerous print and online outlets. He’s been a keynote speaker and panelist at events all over the world, from four-star ballrooms to Senate hearing rooms, and rubbed shoulders with lawmakers, lobbyists and Washington insiders. He’s had lunch with John McCain... fished with the America’s largest landowner... and even appeared on the Christmas card of one of Hollywood’s top producers. Elon Musk details SpaceX progress on latest Starship spacecraft build and flight timelines Link: https://techcrunch.com/2019/12/30/elon-musk-details-spacex-progress-on-latest-starship-spacecraft-build-and-flight-timelines/ The fast pace of Starlink deployments will allow SpaceX to rapidly expand its coverage area. Numerous other companies including OneWeb, Amazon, and Telesat are working on their own competing constellations – making it critical for SpaceX to bring Starlink to market as quickly as possible. SpaceX is currently slated to begin their 2020 manifest with their third batch of Starlink satellites on Jan. 3 at 22:24 local time (Jan. 4 3:24 UTC). The launch will occur from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral, Fla., where SpaceX is expected to launch the large majority of their Starlink missions. The launch will be the fourth flight of the first stage booster B1049, which will become SpaceX's second booster to fly for the fourth time. The fourth batch of Starlink satellites is then scheduled for mid-January, with SpaceX looking to quickly turnaround the SLC-40 launch pad. Meanwhile, the company is currently targeting no earlier than Jan. 11 for the launch of Crew Dragon's Inflight Abort Test from Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The flight will see Crew Dragon demonstrate its abort capabilities from a Falcon 9 launch vehicle at the point of maximum aerodynamic pressure on the launch vehicle. The flight is the largest remaining hurdle before SpaceX is ready to fly crew for the first time. SpaceX has already achieved its goal of conducting ten consecutive successful parachute drop tests of Crew Dragon's upgraded parachutes in the final months of 2019, likely paving the way for parachute qualification in the near future. Parachute qualification has been one of the largest remaining open items before crewed flight. As a holiday gift, we’re bringing our last On Orbit episode of the year a day early! Via Satellite Editor-in-Chief Mark Holmes and Managing Editor Annamarie Nyirady join us to discuss the biggest space and satellite news stories of 2019. It definitely wasn’t a boring year! Constellations, C-band drama, 5G, 3D printing, and mergers and acquisitions are just a few of the items that made the final list of 12. Via Satellite will publish the entire list, along with write-ups about each news story, in the following edition of the Daily News Feed, which will be the last edition before the new year. As soon as we get back from the holiday break, we’ll be posting the first episode of our special six-episode series on how satellites can help bridge the digital divide - “Connecting the Unconnected.” Co-produced with our series sponsor, Hughes Network Systems, Connecting the Unconnected will bring Hughes engineers and executives together with partners in Brazil and Colombia to talk about the important role that broadband connectivity plays in remote healthcare, education, disaster response, public safety, small business development, and quality of life. The first episode, “Defining the Divide,” will post on Tuesday, January 7. Each of the following five episodes will post every other week between our regular episodes. The Via Satellite team and I would like to thank all of you for listening to and supporting the On Orbit podcast! We’re very happy that we were able to produce 19 quality episodes for you during our first year. Today’s podcast is a panel discussion from the recent Canadian Global Affairs Institute Ready for Launch, Preparing Canada for a Future in Space conference held in Ottawa. Officially the panel was called the Canadian Space Industry Leaders, but I’m calling it the Power Panel, as it featured David O’Connor of Magellan Aerospace, Mike Greenley of MDA, Marina Mississian of Honeywell and Dan Goldberg of Telesat. Indeed, a power panel representative of Canada’s largest space companies. Moderated by Charity Weeden, the panelists discussed the current state of the Canadian Space Program, what they think should be included in the next Space Strategy, and what they think of governments support. Magellan’s David O’Connor went as far as saying “our government has failed the country with the way its handled the space program.”
Today on SpaceQ I’ll be talking with Dan Goldberg, CEO of Telesat. Telesat is a leading global satellite operator based in Ottawa. Dan’s been the Chief Executive at Telesat since 2006. Before working at Telesat he had been CEO at SES New Skies. And for those with long memories, Dan was also Associate General Counsel and Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs at PanAmSat. Telesat is charting a new course in developing a low earth orbit constellation of satellites, 117 of them plus spares. For a company with 15 active geostationary satellites in orbit, funding, designing, building and deploying over a hundred more, albeit much smaller satellites, is a challenging prospect. Telesat isn’t the only company vying to develop a small satellite constellation in low earth orbit. Competitors include OneWeb, who appear to be making good progress having recently brought online their factory production in France and a new manufacturing facility in Florida being built. Telesat though has at least one advantage over its competitors. Notably, in the next two months their going go launch their first two prototype satellites. I spoke to Dan about the constellation, the space advisory board and Canada’s space future, their two new GEO satellites to be launched next year, Telstar Vantage 18 and 19, and what Telstar 19 will mean for Canada’s north.
Episode 0x17-- Turkey Time We're going to try to keep this one relatively short. Seriously. Of course, it's a day late because I did a boo boo on the recording. Don't ask. Upcoming over the next hour... Lots of News Breaches SCADAs DERPs!!! and then our discussion topic-- And if you've got commentary, please sent it tomailbag@liquidmatrix.org for us to check out. DISCLAIMER: It's not that explicit, but you may want to use headphones if you're at work. ADDITIONAL DISCLAIMER: In case it is unclear, this is the story of 4 opinionated infosec pros who have sufficient opinions of their own they don't need to speak for anyone except themselves. Ok? Thanks for the shout-out in Episode 14 regarding the Diginotar report. Unfortunately I'm going to have to award you guys a mini-derp award for your comments that same episode on the story about the Canadian Navy buying satellite services from Inmarsat as satellites just happen to be my area of expertise. Yes, Canada does have its own communications satellites. They are managed by a company called Telesat. However, they are not of use to the Canadian Navy because they are located in the wrong place, operate on the wrong frequencies, and provide the wrong types of services for what the Navy needs. Communications satellites of this type operate in the geostationary belt (GEO), an orbit around the Equator 36,000 km above the Earth. The radio spectrum in this orbit is pretty congested, so early on international regulation of the satellites in this orbit and the spectrum they use was given to an organization called the ITU. Countries apply to the ITU for specific orbital slots and frequencies in the GEO belt and then license those to their companies. Canada has slots over North America and associated frequencies that are used by Telesat for what's called Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) - mainly broadcast TV and a host of communications services to remote communities in northern Canada. But these frequencies and antenna patterns are not what's used for mobile communications, nor does Canada have any satellite slots in other locations to provide global coverage which is kinda important for ships. Inmarsat on the other hand has the slots and frequency allocations to specialize in Mobile Satellite Services (MSS). They have a fleet of satellites located at various points around the Equator to give global coverage and the types of frequencies and coverage to provide mobile services to ships. Pretty much if you're operating a ship you're going to buy services from Inmarsat. More: Telesat and Inmarsat Brian W. Skyrim Jokes Hey guys, I don't have any Skyrim jokes but do have an odd anecdote for you. While playing Skyrim and listening to the LSD, I've found that I _have_ to turn off the xbox kinect controls or else bad things happen. Apparently Matt's voice is finely tuned as a Weirding Word. I'll be merrily bopping around a character in a dungeon of some type when, all of a sudden, a dragon shout get kicked off and kills all attempts at stealth that I've been trying to muster. It's only Matt's voice that kicks off the shouts. Take that for what you will. John D. Fus Roh Dah! Wrong questions being asked about security involvement in PMO/SDLC work Hey guys, I'm listening to 0x15 and a question made in there really got in between my teeth. "Does making security part of the SDLC make the software more secure?" is the wrong question to be asking. Whether or not having risk evaluations or threat modeling part of the SDLC should be a concern but not the approach I've found work when I've introduced it into the SDLCs of which I've been involved. Let's break out of our security cliques for a moment and realize that ultimately many of use tell ourselves that what we do matters in order to justify the dissonance we have in our brains for putting up with the crap we do because we actually enjoy what we do, for the most part. By and large, we're not altruists. Having the guts to come out and say "Yeah, I know what I do for an organization rarely makes the world a better place, but gosh darn it I like/love what I do." can go a long way to asking the right questions to keep ourselves employed and pertinent to the business that pays us to do cool things. Once you get out of the "what I do is important, dammit" mindset, asking the following question better serves us as a whole. Does making security part of the SDLC/project/product make the business more money or save the business more money had it not been part of the SDLC/project/product as much as we're pushing? If you can justify the change, you can be relatively assured that someone in charge of playing with the moneys with listen. Phrasing the question that way also lends to promoting the idea to the money people that what they do is ultimately important and feeds their own dissonance hating mechanisms. John D. P.S. This approach has also saved me from the dreaded infosec burnout. In Closing Movie Review Matt saw Twilight - point and laugh! We do research too - Ben's running a survey and will publish results.
