In part three of our Total Football series, Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper arrive at Ajax's golden age. They explore Johan Cruyff's development: the precocious teenager shaped by Ajax, Vic Buckingham and Rinus Michels; a player whose extraordinary understanding of space, timing and tactics made him the ultimate expression of individuality within a system. The episode unpicks how Ajax's 4-3-3 worked in practice. Positional rotations, an aggressive offside trap, collective pressing and the instinctive relationships built through years of playing together.Jonathan also examines the uncomfortable questions around fitness, sports science and alleged stimulant use in the era, before charting Ajax's first European Cup triumph in 1971 and the arrival of Ștefan Kovács after Michels' departure for Barcelona. This is the story of how a brilliant group of players, led by Cruyff, turned a tactical idea into the most influential team in European football. You can listen to all the Total Football episodes early right now, here on Patreon. In Gerontocracy in America, Yale legal historian Samuel Moyn makes the case that older generations have systematically hoarded wealth and power, leaving younger Americans with fewer opportunities and a shrinking share of the future. On the second half of the episode, historian James Chappel shares ideas from his book Golden Years, tracing how Americans have invented and reinvented what it even means to grow old.
Whether retirement is around the corner or decades away, people generally have a good idea of what they're retiring FROM: a successful career, cherished colleagues, and professional identity. But have you considered what you're retiring TO? Traditional retirement planning, or what we like to call "default retirement mode," tells us that our Golden Years are a time to just relax, travel a little bit, and maybe pick up golf or crochet. What if your spouse is still working, so you can't travel like you would like to? What if your identity is rooted in your work, either because you truly love it, or because you never got around to building the life you really wanted for yourself? The people who thrive in retirement aren't necessarily the ones with the most money or the most time on the golf course; they're the ones with the clearest sense of purpose, strong relationships, and a vision of what they want their next chapter to look like. This is why simply spending your retirement "not working" is not enough. In this episode, Andrew Wong, CFP®, joins the conversation to discuss how retirement planning should be about more than just money and the outcome of which will vary widely based on a retiree's lifestyle, goals, and expectations. What are you retiring to? Don't forget to subscribe to be the first to hear new episodes.

The years have flown by for Abasiama Ufot -- the once student-immigrant is now an octogenarian. At 80, she still reigns as the matriarch of the Nigerian-American family, but she is also content to live a quiet, reflective life alone in Worcester, Massachusetts. That's where we find Abasiama in the eighth of the nine-part Ufot Family cycle of plays: ” In Old Age.” Playwright Mfoniso Udofiya and actress Ebony Marshall-Oliver join us to discuss the penultimate chapter of the cycle.

One man spent 50 years at the same radio station. The rest of us can barely commit to a streaming service. This episode of The Rizzuto Show welcomes St. Louis radio icon John Ulett into the studio for a hilarious, nostalgic, and surprisingly emotional conversation about surviving five decades in broadcasting without being fired, arrested, or permanently trapped in a dark cork-covered radio studio.John shares stories from the wild early days of KSHE, when listeners could literally walk up to the station window, steal albums, yell requests, and occasionally terrify overnight DJs. We hear about legendary encounters with future superstars like John Mellencamp, Billy Joel, Brian Adams, Eddie Van Halen, and David Lee Roth before they became household names. Apparently every rock legend passed through St. Louis at some point—and somehow John lived to tell the stories. The gang digs into radio's golden years, discussing everything from bizarre consultant advice to the strange reality of hearing your younger self on old airchecks and realizing you sounded way more serious than you remembered. John opens up about imposter syndrome, career longevity, and what it feels like knowing generations of listeners grew up listening to him. It turns out even a broadcasting legend still worries someone will eventually figure out he has no idea what he's doing. Good news, John: you're among friends.Things get weird when stories surface about obsessive listeners, accidental hot-mic moments, profanity accidentally testing radio delay systems, and one particularly unsettling fan who learned to sound exactly like John and may or may not have wanted to wear his skin as a jacket. Just normal radio stuff. The conversation also dives into John's decades-long role as the Cardinals' PA announcer, including mispronounced player names, emotional rookie debuts, opening day memories, Jack Buck stories, and the pressure of announcing baseball legends in front of thousands of fans. Because apparently public speaking isn't stressful enough unless you're doing it over giant stadium speakers. Then, because The Rizzuto Show cannot leave well enough alone, the entire interview derails into a game called "Sick in the Head," where John and Lern battle to determine who knows more about horrifying medical conditions. Expect discussions of gout, hemorrhoids, shingles, migraines, tetanus, gallstones, sleep apnea, vitamin deficiencies, and enough symptoms to convince every listener they should immediately schedule a doctor's appointment. It's a celebration of radio history, St. Louis memories, friendship, mortality, questionable health choices, and the strange beauty of spending a lifetime entertaining people. If you love classic radio stories, behind-the-scenes broadcasting chaos, Cardinals memories, weird listener encounters, and watching two hypochondriacs become amateur doctors, this episode delivers all of it.This daily comedy show proves that the best stories come from the people who've been around long enough to collect them.Whether you're a longtime listener or discovering The Rizzuto Show for the first time, this daily comedy show is packed with laughs, nostalgia, and enough medical misinformation-adjacent panic to keep you entertained all day.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In 1994, a beloved senior was found beaten to death in his rural Alberta home. Despite exhaustive efforts, the killer eluded arrest. More than a year later, a Calgary senior disappeared. A note was left behind suggesting he'd gone fishing, but a search of the home revealed something much more violent had happened. The Green Bay Packers lost wide receivers Romeo Doubs (Patriots) and Dontayvion Wicks (Eagles) this offseason, seemingly opening the door for Matthew Golden to spread his wings in his second NFL season. The Packers extended Jayden Reed's contract, and plan to do the same with Christian Watson, cementing the trio of Reed, Golden and Watson as their top three wideouts. Marques expects big thigns for Golden in 2026. (or, as big as you can expect from a wide receiver in Matt LaFleur's offense, which tends to "share the wealth.") Meanwhile, we recap the 2026 NFL Draft in the NFC North with Michal Dwojak on the Bears to discuss Dillon Thieneman, as well as Nolan Bianchi discussing the Lions' picks of Blake Miller and Derrick Moore, and Andrew Krammer on the Vikings beefing up the defensive line and stealing a player on the Packers' radar(?!)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When he was 19, New Yorker Brian Cullman covered the London music scene for Crawdaddy, landing at the birth of folk-rock and the singer-songwriter boom and watching its leading lights from unimaginably close quarters - Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, John Martyn among them. He even played on the same bill as Drake at Les Cousins club, all this recorded in his book ‘How To Prepare for the Past: Travels in Music and Time'. He talks to us here about that golden age and the American stars he met later, stopping off at … … Ed Sullivan at the shoe-shine: “in six months the Beatles will be lucky to be playing a bowling alley!” … Nick Drake in the same clothes he wore on the cover of Five Leaves Left … Sandy Denny: “She knew she was extraordinary but didn't know if she was any good” … Jackson Browne, onstage from the age of 12 … being hired by rock encyclopaedist Lillian Roxon, “my fairy godmother” … Tim Hardin making Bird On A Wire, “so wasted they followed him round the room with a microphone” ... and “14 hotdogs”? The cavernous appetite of Big Joe Turner. Oldest Stories Album available here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/oldeststoriesmusic/oldest-stories-vol-1 but also possibly on your favorite music distributor service also. Check it out! This episode examines the middle years of the reign of Sargon II of Assyria (r. 722–705 BCE) during a brief period when the Assyrian Empire faced unusually little large-scale war. Following Sargon's major victory over Urartu in 714–713 BCE, the geopolitical balance of the Near East shifted dramatically. Urartu, long the primary rival to Assyria in the Armenian highlands, was weakened both by Sargon's campaign and by the simultaneous arrival of Cimmerian nomadic groups moving south from the Eurasian steppe. With the northern frontier temporarily stabilized, Assyria was able to redirect attention to other regions of the empire. The episode explores several smaller conflicts and political developments across the western and northern frontiers of the Assyrian state. These include Assyrian responses to Ionian Greek activity in the eastern Mediterranean, tensions involving the kingdom of Phrygia under King Midas, and Assyrian intervention in Que (Cilicia) and surrounding Anatolian regions. At the same time, Sargon dealt with internal revolts and political instability among the Medes, the mountain regions of Ellipi and Karalla, and the frontier kingdoms of Tabal and Melid. These campaigns illustrate the normal functioning of Assyrian imperial policy: suppression of rebellions, deportations of local populations, and the conversion of client kingdoms into directly administered Assyrian provinces.A major focus of the episode is the internal operation of the Assyrian imperial system during periods without major war. The construction of Dur-Sharrukin (Khorsabad), Sargon II's new royal capital, was underway during these years and required enormous logistical coordination. The episode discusses how the Assyrian state mobilized labor through the ilku labor obligation, how deported populations enabled large-scale construction and agricultural expansion, and how provincial governors coordinated the movement of materials such as timber, metals, and stone across the empire. Additional projects included fortress construction along frontier regions, mining expansion in the Zagros and Syrian territories, canal digging, orchard planting, and temple renovation in major Assyrian cities. The episode also examines Assyria's economic structure and trade environment during Sargon's reign. Evidence from administrative letters suggests increased regulation of trade routes and resource flows, including restrictions on certain goods such as iron. Interactions with Arab tribes and desert traders, including references to Queen Samsi of the Arabs, highlight the complex relationship between Assyria and nomadic groups operating on the edges of imperial control. Finally, the narrative turns to renewed instability in the west triggered by rumors of Sargon's death and unfavorable omens. Rebellions in Philistine Ashdod, Gurgum, and Kammanu prompted swift Assyrian retaliation, demonstrating the continuing reliance on rapid punitive campaigns to maintain imperial authority. These events mark the end of the short period of relative calm and set the stage for Sargon's major campaign to reclaim Babylon, which had been lost earlier in his reign after the revolt of Merodach-Baladan and Elamite intervention.I am also doing daily history facts again, at least until I run out of time again.
