Centrix is keeping positive despite rising financial hardship and almost half a million Kiwis behind on loan repayments. The credit reporting agency's latest Credit Indicator report shows consumer arrears are 1.3% higher year on year, with financial hardship up 19%. But Managing Director Keith McLaughlin told Mike Hosking the figures are seasonal and have been impacted by Christmas and the school new year for the last 15 years. More people in financial hardship have been declined government food grants this year and foodbanks warn this is putting even more pressure on their struggling services. Data released to RNZ under the official information act shows six percent of special needs grants were declined in the first nine months of this year. That's compared to just 3.5 percent for the same period in 2023. The Ministry of Social Development offers the hardship grants, most are given for food, and people do not have to be on a benefit to apply. Amy Williams reports.
Horses are expensive to keep.As they get older and their health declines, horses require more care. The financial pressure of covering all the costs can lead some owners to make tough decisions, like rehoming their horses or even putting them down. Owners can tend to overcomplicate things. So today, I share some affordable yet effective strategies to care for horses when money is tight.Balancing Finances and Horse CareMany horse owners struggle with the affordability of horse care and tend to wonder whether they can afford certain expenses, particularly when they do not recognize their value. So, for example, some owners might believe that providing hay and companionship is sufficient and may overlook the importance of preventative care. The Costs of Crisis and the Importance of PreventionSometimes, unexpected health crises that are overwhelming financially and emotionally for owners can arise from a lack of knowledge or experience in horse care. A proactive approach that includes regular exercise, reducing stress, and managing their diets can help reduce the likelihood of sudden health issues, like laminitis and metabolic disorders in their horses. By being proactive, owners can also avoid high costs in the future, especially since health problems tend to increase with age.The Emotional and Financial Toll of Ongoing Health StrugglesThe financial burden of expensive diagnostics and treatments can lead to frustration and exhaustion for owners. It is sometimes best to shift from extensive treatments to more natural care that meets all your horse's needs. Chronic conditions, often caused by lifestyle and dietary imbalances, are common but preventable through a balanced approach, including dietary adjustments and plenty of space for natural movement. Horses do best when their lifestyle matches their instincts, which helps minimize the risk of chronic health issues.Avoiding Over-SupplementationIn trying to provide everything their horse might need, many owners overspend on supplements that are of little benefit. Yet there is no advantage to over-supplementing a horse, especially when their digestive health is poor. Instead, simplify the diet with high-quality forage, as that can lead to better and more sustainable results. The 3 Fs for Natural HorsekeepingIt is best to allow horses to live naturally with plenty of space, freedom, and social interaction. When humans become overly involved with their horses, it can be stressful for them, and health issues may arise. Owners should always ensure their horses have the 3 Fs: freedom, friendship, and forage, as providing those essentials can prevent many behavioral and physical problems. Managing Chronic Conditions Without Over-Reliance on MedicationsRelying on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for chronic conditions like laminitis over long periods can lead to health issues like ulcers or increased inflammation in horses. Working with hoof-care professionals, ensuring enough exercise and proper movement, and making dietary changes will support natural healing and reduce the need for expensive medications. Addressing the underlying causes of chronic conditions saves money and stress over time, especially for metabolic disorders that arise from poor diets and high-stress situations.Emphasizing the Basics for Long-Term Health and Cost SavingsPPID (or Cushing's disease) can arise as horses age. By focusing on diet and lifestyle changes early on, owners can help extend the healthy years of their horses. By managing their sugar intake, reducing stress, and providing high-quality, bioavailable nutrition for their horses, owners can also avoid costly health problems later on. A resident of a Clare Direct Provision Centre claims parents in the international protection system have been placed in financial hardship by the government. It comes as a new study has found almost 90% of parents living in Direct Provision feel their daily allowance isn't sufficient to cover basic needs. The Irish Refugee Council's new report, which has been funded by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, highlights that those living in Direct Provision aren't immune to the cost-of-living crisis. At present, each adult in the system is entitled to a weekly allowance for personal or incidental expenses of €38.80, while this is €29.80 per week for a child. However, the report states that 88% of parents feel this isn't enough to fund essential expenses such as food and healthcare. Knockalisheen Direct Provision Centre resident and spokesperson for the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland, Bulelani Mfaco, says parents in the international protection system are under a high level of stress due to not being able to meet even the most basic of costs. The current rate of child benefit is €140 per month and pre-Budget speculation has suggested there could be a double-payment before Christmas. As parents in Direct Provision aren't eligible for the payment, the Irish Refugee Council is calling for this to be rectified. Doras CEO John Lannon says the welfare system isn't equitable if it doesn't support everyone in need of assistance.

On Wednesday's broadcast of CNBC's “Squawk Box,” Professor of Economics at Harvard University and former International Monetary Fund Chief Economist Ken Rogoff stated that “the underlying CPI, the underlying core inflation is still pretty strong” and that there will be upward pressure on real interest rates for a long time, and one cause is the fact that “whatever happens with the green transition, that's going to cost money.” One in six retirees is now thinking about unretiring due to Bidenflation, which one analyst says “may be here to stay.” Well, if Biden wins re-election, it will certainly be here to stay. One Michigan school official admitted his district's move to using electric buses was less than the government has touted it to be. Plus more on today's episode.

With Jessie Garrison from GreenPath Financial Wellness One of the most challenging situations a person can experience is financial hardship. Few things keep us up at night more than the fear of not being able to pay our bills. A sudden change in financial circumstances could jeopardize our ability to pay our mortgage, buy groceries, or even put gas in the car. A financial crisis may result from a variety of reasons such as unexpected medical bills, the sudden loss of a job, a death in the family, or a divorce. Any one of these events might abruptly lead to financial insecurity. Even the cost of rising inflation or high credit card balances could put us in financial jeopardy. But as the mountain of bills continues to accumulate, we may feel as though we are sinking underwater without a life raft. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome a sudden financial crisis. A good first step toward resolving this situation is seeking the aid of trained experts who specialize in working with individuals struggling with financial issues. They advise their clients of all the different options available to them so they can satisfy their creditors and ultimately regain their financial independence. With their help and guidance, clients have been able to consolidate their balances, pay off creditors, and turn their finances around. My guest is a perfect example of someone who did exactly that. As a 21-year-old college student, Jessie Garrison was literally drowning in credit card debt and planning to declare personal bankruptcy. But at the last minute, she was encouraged to contact a credit counseling agency, GreenPath Financial Wellness. That phone call not only saved her financial future, it ultimately led her to a wonderful career path that would not have been possible had she not gone through the experience she did. What You'll Hear on This Episode: How did Jessie get herself in a financial bind at such a young age? How did Jessie turn things around and start working for GreenPath? What are the typical consequences of someone falling into serious debt? How can these financial hardships affect someone mentally and emotionally? What are counseling sessions like at GreenPath? What is a certified financial expert? Where is Jessie now in her financial wellness journey? What type of work does GreenPath do? What would she say to someone who is feeling overwhelmed? Jessie reminds us that you don't have to go through financial troubles alone. How can GreenPath help someone get back on the right path to financial freedom? What advice would Jessie have now for her 20-year-old self? Are there any long-term negative consequences associated with being on a Debt Management Plan? Jessie was able to improve her credit score to be in the top-tier category, and she now pays off her balance immediately rather than letting it rack up. Today's Takeaway: The threat of a financial crisis can feel overwhelming. When you are faced with losing your home or rental property, you worry about where you will go next and how you can afford to live. If you can't pay your bills, how will you support your family and put food on the table? But as we've heard today, even the most dire financial situations can be overcome. Jessie's story is proof that just because a person is deep in debt today, it doesn't mean that it will always be that way. There are solutions available and trained professionals who can help you. Following their advice, payment plans can be agreed upon with creditors and financial stability can be restored. You will learn that you are not alone and there is a solution. A trained professional can help you navigate the obstacles to financial freedom and understanding all of your options can help alleviate some of the fear and anxiety and show you a path forward. There's light at the end of the tunnel. It will take time and discipline and sacrifices may have to be made but the end result is worth it. Remember that every day is a gift and the gift of achieving financial stability is a gift that is truly priceless for you and your family. I'm Florine Mark and that's “Today's Takeaway”. Quotes: “I ended up using credit cards to support my living expenses.”— Jessie [4:00] “Maxed-out or late payments can make it more difficult to secure new loans or credit cards in the future.
