Episode 6 - “Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.” As we discussed in previous episodes, stretching is actually hurting your body. By passively lengthening your muscles, you are breaking the connection the brain has to that muscle, disrupting the neuromuscular connection. When you think about it, stretching is the exact opposite of enhancing or improving muscle function. In terms of yoga postures, there are three poses at the top of the list that you should never do. But there is one (probably your favorite one) that is literally ruining your body. Why? Because you are overstretching. And once again, overstretching can cause you serious problems in the long term. In this episode of STOP Stretching! you will gain a deeper understanding of why stretching is not good for you, what happens if the muscle is overstretched, and what yoga postures you should avoid to keep your body healthy in the long term. You will understand the reason behind the destruction of these asanas and how to modify them for good. I also introduce you to one of my favorite yoga poses and I show you the best resting asanas that will keep your muscles stable. Episode 5 - Have you ever wondered where the “yoga is stretching” madness comes from? The history of yoga is complicated and extends back thousands of years. It started simply with the aim of unifying the body, mind, and spirit. Fast forward to today… and here we are: thinking that yoga is about stretching and flexibility, and that if you can't touch your toes, you're not a “good yogi”. In this episode of Stop Stretching! we dive deep into the history of yoga and uncover where, when, why and how this obsession with stretching came about. You will hear about the original yogis, the very first yoga posture, the rise of Hatha Yoga, and how yoga has evolved into an ‘exercise routine' made up of fancy poses practiced by people wearing spandex. After understanding yoga's ancient roots and debunking our modern-day way of practicing, you'll learn there are only 2 things you need to practice yoga — and they have nothing to do with stretching and flexibility! In this first episode, through his story, Yogi Aaron shares why he has come to the conclusion that stretching is not good for your body. While many believe that stretching helps against tightness, Yogi Aaron shows that flexibility is not the key to happiness. The Stop Stretching Podcast series will show you exactly why yoga has nothing to do with flexibility. You will also find out why you hurt yourself during your practice and how some yoga poses cause you more problems in the long term. We take a look at the history and benefits of AYAMA (Applied Yoga Anatomy + Muscle Activation™). "Dechambeau is the future of golf!" "Revolutionizing the game" "The science of MAT will change the way we train the next generation of golfers!" I could go on but I think you get the idea. If you watched the Arnold Palmer Classic or The Players Championship this past weekend you would have listened to about 192 hours of this jibber jabber. Yes, it is very exciting but we need to put the brakes on for a minute and discus what is really happening. People want to create a world of black or white, red or blue , good vs bad. This is not possible in this debate. This topic is DEEP in the grey minoush of the middle. If I get one more email, text or DM asking me about my thoughts on the MAT (Muscle Activation Technique) and the work that Greg Roskopf is doing with Bryson I will seriously duff my tee shot. 2 Years ago the same messages came in asking, "So what do you think about Coach Joey D? Brooks Koepka's heavy lifting is the future." Where were the emails when Justin Thomas won, who by the way comes from the same camp! Where are the Tweets about Collin Morikawa, Cantlay, or the 47 year old Lee Westwood? It takes more than muscle to win on tour. Bryson has so much more in his arsenal than just long drives. But all you want to focus on is... The argument I am getting from people who are making gross generalizations is that MAT training or heavy lifting is the complete opposite of the way I train my athletes. They want to pit TPI vs these "new" training techniques without knowing that TPI has been teaching Olympic lifting, kettle bell training, opposite side training, deceleration training, muscle activation, nueromuscualr training and yes corrective training for over a decade! I train with heavy resistance with some of my athletes some of the time. Both Rob Roskopf and Joey D screen their athletes before designing training programs. I just don't see where people are drawing the distinction. It is naive to think that the strength and conditioning community would somehow be divided on this topic. We may debate how much of one vs the other and at what time and what intensity but we all follow the same science. This stuff is nothing new! I feel there is a new breed of golf coaches who don't have enough information about human performance to have a valid opinion but have just enough information to be dangerous. In the world of human performance, force plates, biomechanics, and the use of advanced physics is nothing new. It is new to golf because technology that we use to use in University labs and the Olympic training centers are now affordable enough for coaches to personally own. The science is not new! Its just a new application of it. As you can see I am fired up! This episode goes DEEP into this topic. Listen to the full episode before you get in on the debate. You don't know the whole story but after you listen to this... you will at least have my version of it!

I just had to get Ryan Phillips back again. The level of interest was very strong. We had a great response to the show with Ryan Phillips talking about M.A.T. (muscle activation technique). A lot of interest. A lot of questions. A lot of potential opportunity. Ryan is one of only two trainers certified in M.A.T. in the UK He was trained by Greg Roskopf in the USA who has had amazing results with athletes for a number of years. Most noted for his recent work and the body transformation of Bryson DeChambau. Today we explore more about a fascinating subject of how simple isometric exercises can reactivate muscles that have been dormant or imbalanced for years. Muscle imbalance is a crucial area to consider. It is at the heart of EFFICIENT movement. Muscle imbalance creates a LOT of issues. It is why so many people are training in PAIN Why so many golfers have to stop playing. Why there are diminishing returns on your training efforts. We also look into the possibility of how your current training or stretching COULD be making things worse if you have a muscle imbalance and you are forcing yourself through a range of motion with compensations. However, once you have activated and balanced your muscle structure with M.A.T. you then potentially make tremendous progress as you can now GAIN so much from whatever mode of training your favour. I would go as far as to say that anyone who is really keen to get the best from their game should explore the potential with M.A.T. Essentially what you are doing is providing a tremendous foundation for all of your movement. You are working from a really solid foundation. Fascinating area to explore. To find out more about M.A.T. and the work of Ryan Phillips go to https://www.phillips-fit-brighton.co.uk/muscle-activation-techniques To take ACTION and BECOME a Certified Mind Factor coach go to https://themindfactor.net/certification-course-2020/
It has been incredible to see the body transformation of Bryson DeChambeau recently and the effect this has had on his performance on the golf course. Is it a path worth exploring? What might be the downside of this approach? Well today on the Brain Booster we get some of these answers and MUCH more. Bryson’s fitness trainer is Greg Roskopf, who created the MAT system. Muscle Activation Technique. Today we have with us Ryan Phillips who is one of only TWO trainers certified by Greg Roskopf in the UK. Ryan has successfully been helping clients with pain, muscle tightness and mobility issues since 2010 using Muscle Activation Techniques. MAT® is revolutionary process designed for correcting muscle imbalances in the body. It has dramatically improved functional capabilities in people of all age groups, providing a pain free lifestyle along with increasing sports performance and career longevity in many professional athletes. Muscle Activation Techniques® gets to the root cause of pain or injury by addressing muscle weakness rather than muscle tightness. This helps to restore normal muscle function and body alignment, thereby decreasing pain, reducing muscle stiffness, reducing risk of injury and improving physical performance. Ryan is one of only 2 certified Muscle Activation Techniques® Specialist in the UK and the only one on the South Coast of England. Due to the exclusive nature of what Ryan has to offer, his clients often travel from neighbouring counties and countries for treatments. For those who are not in a position to travel to his practice in Brighton, Ryan offers MAT® treatments online. In this episode of the Muscle Activation Techniques Podcast, we hear direct from Bryson Dechambeau's Muscle Dysfunction Expert, Greg Roskopf discuss how he trained and helped Bryson achieve PGA records in both driving distance and clubhead speed. Greg did this in part by ensuring Bryson's muscles were able to contract-on-demand. Bryson is using Muscle Activation Techniques not only as a "performance accelerator" but as a system of checks and balances to make sure Bryson's astonishing muscle gain did not hinder performance nor make him susceptible to injury. After leaving Arlington County and continuing his private massage practice, Matthew became the Director of Education for Arington, VA based Fit One Personal Training, again educating the staff to provide the best exercise services possible. Around this same time Matthew met Tom Purvis the creator of The Resistance Training Specialist Program (RTS). Matthew had a passion for exercise and strength training and quickly gained his Mastery Level Status in this physics based program. He excelled in his understanding of exercise mechanics and became one of RTS’s first instructors helping Tom Purvis educate exercise professionals in understand the importance of a physics based training model and decision making process. In 2001 Tom Purvis met and introduced the RTS Instructor group to Greg Roskopf the creator of Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT). It was at this point that the blend of body work/massage and personal training, two separate businesses started to come together. Greg shared his concepts of bringing stability/contractile ability back to the body through a process of range of motion, muscle testing and origin and insertion work. At this point Greg decided to teach a 10 month 8 weekend specialist program to train others in MAT. Matthew was in the first group of students to complete the program in 2002 and the first MAT Certified Specialist in the country. It was at this point that Greg asked Matthew to move to Denver and work at the MAT Corporate HQ seeing clients and educating fitness professionals about MAT by teaching the first phase of MAT, the JumpStart Program. For the next three years Matthew traveled the country on the weekends helping to grow the MAT & RTS communities teaching the MAT JumpStart Programs and the RTS 123 courses. During the week Matthew built a thriving private practice at MAT HQ and helped Greg evolve the MAT program. While at HQ along side Greg and the instructor core Matthew helped to develop the MAT Mastery program and also became the first MAT Mastery Level Specialist. In 2005 Matthew became the Lead Instructor for the MAT Specialist Program. Over the last 10+ years Matthew has taught over 45 10 month 8 weekend Specialists courses that accounts for over 2000 students. These courses have covered the U.S. and International locations including New York, Miami, Columbus, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Barcelona, London & Mexico City. In 2015 Matthew decided it was time for a change and decided to move his private practice closer to home in an effort to create more time for his family due to the busy travel schedule of teaching. This has created an ability to spend a lot more time with his wife Jennifer also an MAT Certified Specialist and RTS Mastery Level Trainer, daughter Rhys and son Ryker. Having a systematic approach to assessing proper contraction is vital to improving this function. Without proper function the system will eventually break down and participation will become less and less efficient leading to less than optimal health. Maintaining this system over time is vital to long term health gains. Proper progression over time is vital to reaching the systems optimal potential. Education of the inner working of the system is vital honoring how to progress this system. Education is vital to understanding how to maintain this system overtime. A solid understanding of physics is vital to understanding how force affects the system. Properly applying forces is vital to achieving, progressing and maintaining a healthy muscular system.
