Phil and Ray are back in 2025 chatting with Stu from Silent Knight, while they are in town as the national support on Hammerfall's Australian tour. Stu was crashing on Ray's floor while he was in town, so we thought we might as well record an episode. This episode did require significant editing as Ray and Stu are brothers, and apparently like to bicker at each other, which is no fun to listen to - just ask Phil.We cover Iron Saviour, Atlantean Kodex, Dragonland and more. Welcome to Season 5 and Episode 74 of the Movement Logic podcast! In this unplanned episode, Laurel and Sarah discuss Stu McGill's recent appearance on the Huberman podcast. In Episode 62, we identified McGill's big themes around movement. In this episode, we go through his appearance on Huberman to see if he's still promoting the same ideas or if he has updated his approach. You will learn: Why we are once more deconstructing Stu McGill's standpoint and outdated views on movement safety Why a hyperfocus on potential future pain is not only unhelpful but can put people off from exercising at all Why we need to be encouraging more people to lift weights vs scaremongering them away from it How McGill seems to continue to characterize himself as a ‘healer' when in fact he is often well out of his scope of practice McGill's continued overuse of anecdote and analogy in lieu of evidence and research Whether we will cover it if and when McGill goes on Rogan next (spoiler: we won't)Sign up here to get on the wait list for our next Bone Density Course in October 2024!Reference links:Episode 62: Make McGill Make SenseStu McGill on Huberman: Build a Strong, Pain-Proof Back

Andrew Huberman tried to give advice about low back pain. It was terrible. We debunked Huberman Lab's low back pain protocol episode to save you the trouble of watching it. . If you have low back pain, disc degeneration, disc herniations, disc bulges, SI Joint Pain, or sciatica, you need to understand the evidence about how to heal, and what to avoid. . Unfortunately the treatment and exercise advice Huberman gives for low back pain and sciatica are not evidence based. He relies on outdated myths, so we mythbusted and fact-checked his horrible low back pain advice. . This episode debunks the McGill Big Three exercises for low back pain and sciatica, from Dr. Stu McGill, and discusses the best physical therapy exercises for back pain and sciatica. . ✅ Watch the MASTERCLASS on Low Back Pain & Sciatica. https://www.shapeshiftwellness.com/LBP-masterclass

Today's conversation is with Dr Stuart McGill, professor emeritus at University of Waterloo for 30 years, clinician and researcher. Stu is the number one back pain expert in the world and works with athletes and general population, covering the principles to cure your back problems and sciatica. Having published over 240 papers, and written several books about back pain, I was privileged to host Stu on the podcast. Expect to learn from Stu's years of experience to better understand the causes of back pain whether they are physical, psychological, social and more. We discuss the common mistakes clinicians and individuals make when it comes to both assessing back pain and treating it. The world has continued to evolve and change during the time that Stu has been researching and practising and we explore how the modern lifestyle can influence pain or causes of pain. Naturally, we learn about combating the sedentary lifestyle whether that is office based or working at home remotely. Having worked with a huge range of athletes across many sports, Stu is uniquely placed to comment on training program structures, the back's capacity and the demands it can handle. There is so much in this episode and I've made sure to upload the video to Spotify and Youtube so you can go and check out any stages where Stu is giving a practical demonstration as well as a verbal explanation. In terms of actionable takeaways, there is lots for you to do after listening to this including reviewing posture, training program structure, lifestyle habits, prehab and rehab, your form when lifting and much more. All the resources we discuss in this episode are linked in the show notes under the ‘Connect with Stu' section and I'm excited to hear your feedback on what you've learned from a true master of his craft and expert. Today's episode sponsor is previous podcast guest, Mike Samuels. Mike is a copywriter who's been responsible for over $170 Million in online sales for his clients, and now teachers others how to become what he calls 'Coffee Shop Copywriters.' He's personally guided over 300 people to the point where they're now earning their living as highly-paid, highly-respected copywriters, earning up to £350 per hour, and getting paid multiple times for one piece of work. Here he covers how to fix your lower back pain with a systematic and individualised approach. This year we're seeing a lot of sitting in makeshift home offices and gyms being opened and closed unpredictably. This has contributed to more people experiencing back pain. Dr. Stuart McGill is a renowned expert. In fact, myself and many others would consider him the pretty undisputed authority on back pain. He’s had a profound influence on my own training as well as the programming that I do for people around the world every month. A professor at the University of Waterloo for over 30 years, Dr. McGill’s work generated over 240 peer-reviewed scientific journal papers, contributed to several textbooks, and garnered international awards. His knowledge and expertise has informed leading personal training certifications, core training programs, and prominent workshops like RKC and StrongFit.Joining me from Canada, Dr. Stuart (or Stu, as he asks me to call him) proves an exceptionally good sport as I throw a number of complex questions his way. Dr. Stu shares insight into his work with the St. Louis Cardinals and explains how he was able to predict back injuries before they happened with 100% accuracy. He also gives us a glimpse into his diagnostic methods and walks us through how approaches to training should change over time to support shifting goals and advance longevity. Want relief from your back pain? Start here!Proudly Sponsored ByVivobarefootAnecdotally, a significant number of people have experienced relief from much of their back pain after spending more time barefoot or switching to a pair of Vivobarefoot shoes. Squishing our feet into stiff, heeled shoes disrupts the entire postural chain that’s connected to our feet! Suddenly our knees operate a little less optimally, our backs are a little tilted, and our shoulders are a little forward – all because of the crazy shoe tech that’s supposed to be making us more comfortable. The response is often tension, and that tension resides in our backs and hips. Vivobarefoot shoes, on the other hand, are wide, lightweight, and zero drop to reconnect and “rewild” us to our natural gait patterns and muscular systems from toe to head. No two patients are the same. Everyone who walks into a practitioner’s office brings with them unique biomechanical, as well as social and psychological, factors. Being able to understand each patient’s individual conditions and background is what sets great practitioners apart. Dr. Stu McGill is a professor emeritus, University of Waterloo, where he was a professor for 32 years. His laboratory and experimental research clinic investigated issues related to the causal mechanisms of back pain, how to rehabilitate back-pained people, and enhance injury resilience and performance. Today, I’m asking Dr. McGill the big questions. He tells us what it means to move well. Starting from the scientific principle that every one of the body’s health systems requires movement for optimal health, Dr. McGill explains why this means different things to different people. To better understand one’s patients, Dr. McGill explains the importance of truly listening to everyone’s story. He describes how helping people become pain-free can lead to large psychological improvements too. Most of all, Dr. McGill understands how everyone’s health and situation is unique. He expertly explains how we can cue into these differences to best serve each patient’s needs. What does moving well mean to you? Tell me in the comments on the episode page! In this episode What it means to move well The many factors that make each person’s needs different Why social context matters when treating every patient How to cue an optimal breath depending on a person’s particular needs The benefits of kettlebell swings in many situations Debunking common myths of low back pain Lessons learned from studying elite athletes Quotes “If I can’t address that enormous social impediment for a patient’s success, then it doesn’t matter what the exercise is anymore.” [11:06] “People don’t do the same tasks with exactly the same movement pattern. They vary their movement patterns. We measure what is wise and unwise. What is painful and what is painless. What creates athleticism and what doesn’t.” [39:23] “You will never train a saint bernard to win at the greyhound track. It’s not possible. You will break the dog.” [55:00] Links Find Dr. Stu McGill online Follow Backfitpro on Facebook Episode 79 with Dr. Craig Liebenson Check out the full show notes for this episode here Urban Wellness Clinic Follow Emily & Urban Wellness on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube

Can you do it? Find out in this video here Spinal Hyperextension During Lifting Hi Zac! What are your comments on T and lumbar spine hyperextensions in weightlifting. I was thinking about that for a while and I think there is a two-edged sword. Giving the fact that the spine is forcing in extension (especially with the beginner) the position of the pelvis and rib cage is not really advantageous for abdominal recruitment. Also, there is a potential for lack of glute and hamstring activation due to higher amount of cervical extension. But on the other end, you want to concentrically contract the whole erector and lats. The forces during the lift are high particularly at the movement when the weight is being loaded on the body. If the muscles of the upper posterior chain eccentrically contract the chances for successful lift are very low. What are some of your thoughts? Love your work and sending kind regards from Slovenia :) Is Spinal Flexion Bad? Hi Zac! I read an article from Stu McGill and there were many claims on there that were pretty extreme "The truth is that someone hitting the gym every day without spine sparing techniques during their workout, will develop cumulative trauma in their discs. Repeatedly bending your back at the gym, followed by long periods of sitting at work, chased down with poorly executed daily tasks such as getting dressed or gardening conspire together to cause the slow delamination of some of your disc fibers." "One of my major issues with Pilates is that one of its key principles is to flatten the spine and “imprint” the lower back to the floor when lying down. This deliberate effort to disrupt the spine from its neutral position and “straighten” one of its natural curves is not healthy and can trigger pain sensitivity in a person who is already sensitized. Some people experience a false sense of relief while going through this motion because it stimulates the back's stretch receptors. In reality, this relief is fleeting and pain symptoms typically return with a vengeance due to the stresses placed on your discs." "Thus the exaggerated fashion of the Pilates' rollup puts an emphasis on moving through the spine, putting unnecessary load and strain on the discs. The real goal should be to minimize spinal movement and instead use our hips as primary centers for motion. This philosophy will allow the back pain to settle." Is someone really able to make those claims? Crunching Could you do a movement debrief on crunches and whether they are safe or not. I have a lot of clients who want more defined abs. Is it okay to program crunch variations? Flexion after spinal fusion Would you recommend this for someone that has had a fusion at L4/L5? I desperately need to strengthen my core, but how is it possible when told no BLT's?!?! Sum Up Spinal hyperextension during weightlifting would limit the depth necessary to complete the lift Achieving weightlifting depth requires posterior pelvic tilting The research does not support spinal flexion causing disc injuries, and in some cases may actually help with protrusion There is no difference in injury risk with situps or core stability exercises Caution must be taken in telling clients to not exercise, spare the spine, or other verbage that may perpetuate maladaptive beliefs Crunches are safe to perform and produce a fair amount of EMG activity in the rectus abdominis and internal obliques There is no research for or against spinal precautions after surgery Thought physician clearance to exercise is warranted, most precautions ought to be lifted within 6-12 months. Graded activity must be performed after any type of injury or surgery Photo by Nicole De Khors from Burst

Often referred to as Western Australia's power metal sweetheart, Stu McGill is the guitarist and founder of Perth's Silent Knight. Over the past 9 years, Stu and the band have created a loyal following in a local scene that has been heavily dominated by more extreme metal bands. Stu understood that their sound didn't equate to a lot of immediate opportunities, so he decided to create his own. In 2014 Stu launched the Stormrider Festival which is held each year in Perth and showcases Australia's best melodic and thrash metal bands. This has given his own band a deserved platform to play with their national peers but to also build a more dedicated following in Perth, where a growing appreciation for their music has continued year on year. Stu's 'do it yourself' approach also lead to the launch of a band blog called Adbantage (get it?) where Stu shares a number of tips that he's learnt himself over the past decade of building and running his own band. Now that we live in an era of opportunity and almost every resource at our fingertip, many of us including Stu are sharing the tools and secrets to create our own opportunities rather than relying solely on old pathways of a record label, mainstream media or even large scale tour agents. Speaking of touring, Stu took the jump and announced his first ever international tour booking under Stormrider Touring for Sweden's Dragonland in September. The decision to run an international tour was not a long planned out goal but rather an opportunity that arose from Stu's ongoing networking and love for melodic metal. You'll also get a laugh out of how Stu was accidentally connected with the band for the first time. Lot's of great music talk for anyone who's a fan of what Stu's involved with or anyone playing in their own bands. Gift of Injury Websites Johari Window Mighty Cast 107 PowerRackStrength.com BackFitPro.com Transcript - Limit Slayer Podcast #151 Click to Show Brian Carroll: Think of this analogy. You're walking down the street and you constantly stub your big toe. I can inject it with all kinds of Lidocaine and painkillers and everything, bandage it up, but until we address the gait problem that toe is never going to heal up because you keep picking the scab and stubbing it.I say it's no different with your back.If you're constantly causing the injury over and over, it doesn't matter what I shoot into it, it doesn't matter what we do to brace it, doesn't matter what we do until we address the issue and the injury mechanism and take that away -- and then we allow to rebuild athleticism. Who is Brian Carroll? Nick Ritchey: Brian embodies the saying, "it's not over until you quit."Three time World's Strongest Man, Bill Kazmaier, wrote the forward to his new book and says, My own mentor and former co-host, Chris Young, before he was taken away early by leukemia, called Brian a "true gentleman," and a lot of other good things back in Mighty Cast episode 107.Three things about Brian that stand out to me the most are that he has squatted over 1000 pounds in competition over 50 times. He has multiple world records in three different weight classes totaling over 10 times his body weight in power-lifting competitions. And Brian is chock full of wisdom. This Episode… In this interview we're going to cover Brian's transformation from the lowest of lows, to the highest of highs. From sitting in his car, considering eating a bullet, to getting pain free and stronger than ever. We're going to look at his book, the big ideas that you can take away from it, and the details that make a difference. Relevant at 19 or 91… We'll talk about a 90 year old woman that got to stay in her house because she was able to fix her back pain with some basic power lifting 101.And we're going to look at how this information has impacted both of our lives and leave you with some takeaways that can change your life for the better, forever, if you implement them. And now let's get to our guest.Hey Brian, how are you doing? 3 Years Later… Brian: I've been doing well Nick. Thanks for having me. It's been really right at three and a half years…Kind of hard to believe how fast time has flown.Hope everything's been well with you. Nick: Yeah. I don't know if you know, but last time you were my surprise birthday present. My birthday is on the 19th and you were on the show on the 17th. Brian: Oh really? So he surprised you with that. That's pretty cool. Nick: Yeah, definitely. I was tickled pink then, and when I saw your new book come out I was I was tickled pink again. So I'm looking forward to getting into that with you a bit today. Brian: Sounds good man, ready to do it. 2 Busted Vertebrae… Nick: Well, I think we should start off with what happened because I know you were starting the recovery process the last time we talked. You had some videos on YouTube with Dr. McGill. I was watching those and following your progress. We were all crossing our fingers rooting for you.But man, you had a hell of an injury, which the book goes into quite a bit.The book is "The Gift of Injury" by Brian Carroll and Dr. Stu McGill. You had, a crushed L5 and a split sacrum. For our readers that don't know what that means, we all know what a donut is. A crushed vertebrae is kind of like a crushed donut.
We've been busy working on some poddyCs and some other cool stuff for you recently, but we're back with a Propane original. As always, if you want to see us cover a specific topic, give us a shout. This week I'm covering the what, why and how of improving your posture. https://vimeo.com/275784314 I've come a long way in undoing the embarassing, grungey teenage habits. As a general rule there's more to be learned from people who previously struggled with the trait you're looking to develop, as opposed to those who naturally display the skill. Improvement takes time, but identify your sticking points and you'll lubricate the process. Posture: The 'What' Posture is simply the position of your spine and limbs when standing or sitting. It is also aptly defined as 'approach or attitude', given the two-way influence of posture on our psychology. From a side view, the spine follows an S curve. The 'S' comprises of the natural curvatures of the spine's subsections: cervical lordosis (extended/anteriorly convex shape), thoracic kyphosis (flexed/concave), lumbar lordosis and sacral kyphosis: Abnormal length-tension relationships between antagonistic muscles in the body will affect the resting position of that joint, and ultimately your resting spinal position. While they say curves are beautiful, there is no perfect posture. Improving yours isn't necessarily about straightening the spine: these curves are crucial to its stability and function. Returning to 'neutral' for you could be about regaining some of of the natural curves, while in someone else it could be about reducing an excessive curve, like slouching or ape-bum. The muscles that contribute to posture & stability: These muscles are generally designed to provide stability rather than powerful contraction, but they are capable of generating stiffness when challenged. People with chronic back pain exhibit funny activation parterns: aberrant or delayed activation, or hypersensitisation to pain, where stimuli to spinal positional receptors are interpreted by the CNS as pain, even in the absence of tissue damage. This neuropathic element is partly what can make chronic back pain so chronic. These are "guy wires": They're designed to reinforce a pole or mast's stability. The spine is much the same. Antagonistic muscles pull on opposing sides of the spine to stabilise it - hence anything that loosens one guy wire and tightens the other, such as being asymmetrically weak, having big boobs, or walking around in anterior pelvic tilt will destabilise the spine, wasting precious degenerative capacity and predispose you to back pain. From McGill's Ultimate Back Pain & Performance The idea of the spine having a finite degenerative capacity comes from Dr Stu Mcgill, who claims that our spines have a fixed number of flexion cycles available in their lifetime before herniating, so we shouldn't be wasting capacity on poor movement choices. He also posits that when we lift weights, we can end up functionally repurposing some of the deep lumbar erectors, which are postural, oxidative and slow twitch fibres, into fast-twitch, power-generating fibres. As a result, the muscles lose their endurance and spine-stabilising role in favour of strength. They fatigue more easily during general activities, again wasting spinal capacity and predisposing us to injury. This is one reason why strength alone isn't actually protective against back pain. Control of posture Posture is subject to vestibular, emotional, visual, cortical/somatic, and mechanical control. Like breathing, its one of these funny body processes that can be either autonomic or voluntary; influenced by your balance, level of stress, mood, neurochemical state, muscular tightness, 'trigger points', threat perception and even your self-belief. And that's just when standing at rest. Functional postures, sprinting/lifting stances and posture under load are wra...
