Today's podcast features Henk Kraaijenhof.  Henk has several decades of experience as a performance coach in a broad array of sports.  His coaching credentials include working track athletes such as Nelli Cooman (former 60m dash world record holder), Merlene Ottey, and Troy Douglas as well as elite team sport competitors. His specialties are physical and mental coaching, stress and stress management, technology, and the methodology or training.  In addition to world-level performance, Henk's coaching has also bred longevity, as Ottey and Douglas ran world class times in their 40's. In the current coaching age, it's easy to think that because we are doing “new” looking drills, have increased our data collection, and have created various technical models of sport skill, we have a massive edge on what athletes were doing 50 years ago.  At the same time, general trends in injury rates and performance markers should have us thinking twice (for example, Bob Hayes running 9.99s in the 100m in 1964 on a chewed up cinder track).  At the end of the day, it is more “core” elements of training philosophy that stand the test of time, and help us to better understand the needs of the athlete in front of us. Today’s episode features world renowned speed coach, educator and author, Henk Kraaijenhof, back for his second appearance on the show. Henk is a breath of fresh air because of his practicality in regards to training.  He is a figure with not only incredible knowledge of various training means (and the science behind those means) but also the practical success to back it up in a sport defined by quantitative measures (track and field).  In a day where we tend to get distracted by “shiny” exercises and various training tools that seem as if they are the breakthrough to the next level in performance, Henk brings us all into a realistic point of view by which we can establish a proper baseline of what works, then proceed to the next level.   On today’s show, we cover the basic ideas of training transfer to athletic speed, as well as a chat on the purpose of standard “strength to bodyweight” levels, and where they even came from.   Henk also digs into some of the modern training tools we are seeing now, such as instability bags and weighted vests and shorts and if they are useful or just “fluff”.  We’ll also get into Kaatsu (blood flow occlusion) training and some applied means by which this type of work could be applied, which could be particularly useful in training conditions where athletes might not be able to get outside and sprint. Henk Kraaijenhof was de trainer en coach van diverse topsporters en teams, zoals Nelli Cooman, de voetbalclub Juventus en spelers als Edgar Davids. Je zou dus verwachten dat we het over sport en zijn specialiteit -het sprinten- gaan hebben. Niks van dat. Tegenwoordig is Henk niet alleen spreker in het bedrijfsleven, hij heeft ook nog een praktijk waar hij mensen begeleidt die last hebben van stress en vermoeidheid. Nu heb ik niet alleen ikzelf een burn-out gehad, het lijkt soms wel alsof al mijn vrienden (en coachees) vroeg of laat hiermee te maken krijgen. Iedereen is druk en lijkt moeite te hebben met het vinden van de juiste energiebalans. Een erg relevant onderwerp dus! In deze podcast heb ik het met Henk dan ook burn-out, stress en vermoeidheid. Curtis is one of the best sprint coaches in the nation, and I’m thrilled to have him on the podcast.  Back to back with Henk Kraaijenhof (ep 20), this could be considered one of the best “sprint doubles” in history! In this episode we go inside Curtis’ training philosophy and learn some things that have led to his sprint coaching successes. Key Points: The use of plyometrics in training track sprinters, and key points of implementation Progressing plyometrics in context of contact time Curtis’s approach to strength training for sprinters Upper body training for sprinters Curtis’s thoughts on resisted and overspeed training devices Ideas on fixing sprint errors and cueing One of Curtis’s favorite sprint drills Curtis’s ideas on overdistance training and tempo Trochanter length as a rule by which to optimize sprint technique Loading and deloading ideals for sprint athletes Quotes: “With plyometrics, we are dealing with the ability to reduce ground contact time” “Most people want to increase the intensity of what they are doing (by raising the height of the hurdle or box).  By increasing the intensity, you end up increasing the ground contact time, which is not what you want to do!” “To apply more force on the ground, you need to spend more time on the ground to jump higher, and if we are spending more time on the ground, we are defeating the purpose of what a hurdle hop is for” “Even if you can recreate the movements of the track in the weightroom, you can’t move the weight as fast as what you can do on the track…there is a fine line with lifting, that you don’t go too far on the maximal strength end of things, and you aren’t sacrificing speed of movement” “We’ll have 4-6 weeks this fall where we are able to lift heavy” “As a coach, you have to figure out different cues that work for different people” “We don’t do a lot of running drills, but we do the same ones, there are millions of running drills, but you have got to find the ones that work best for you.  We have about 6 drills that work best for me, and I keep those in rotation” “Once you have established a culture within your group, the new kids can look at the older kids and figure out a way to do these things correctly” “People land too far in front of their body, then you have to wait until the foot comes under the center of mass until you can push.  Then your heel recovery is worse, recovering from way behind the body.  It’s a bad circle, in which it continues to get worse as you go down the track.  There is a skid drill we do, which involves an active paw to put you in the right position.  You can hear the way the drill sounds, watch someone do it right, and then try to recreate that sound.  When someone does it right, all the other mechanical issues start to clean themselves up” “The slower you run, the more your technique is compromised, and the more you run in bad technique, the more you emphasize bad technique” “I try to make sure that most of the stuff I’m doing, I can take to the starting line, whether it’s in the weightroom, in my drills, plyometrics; if I can’t take it to the starting line, then what’s the use of it?” “Your strength length is limited and influenced by your trochanter length; I can’t get someone who is ...

This week’s guest is Henk Kraaijenhof.   Henk is one of the smartest coaches/consultants out there in the world of training and conditioning, with years of experience training many of the fastest sprinters in the world and consulting and training a broad array of other sports. I first heard him speak at the Central Virginia Sports Performance Seminar in 2014, where he gave the best presentation I had ever seen on building speed in athletes.  After the seminar, Henk gave me some really good thoughts on how athletes generally do better training towards their strengths rather than their weaknesses.  Sprinters are designed to sprint fast, and slow-twitch distance runners are built to run further.  Subjecting either to a type of training they aren’t designed for an extended period of time won’t yield the results many coaches are hoping for. Henk might be the best guy out there to talk about athlete centered training regimens.  If I ever have a question on muscle-twitch types and training, or training athletes based on psychological differences, Henk is an amazing resource. Henk has also just finished a new book, “What We Need is Speed”, which is a compilation of Henk’s thoughts on speed in context of technique, motor learning, genetics, fiber types, strength training, training programs and more.  I couldn’t recommend it more if you are interested in getting athletes faster.
