"É a minha primeira vez, estou achando incrível a organização", diz. No feminino, Bia Haddad, 23ª do mundo, é a única representante brasileira.

But it was her perseverance and belief that generated sustained results over the course of a Hall of Fame career. In a wide-ranging and revealing conversation, Mary tells her story from how fate led her to pick up a racquet at age 10, to how she continues to give back to the sport today. Episode 4 of TennisWorthy details how Mary's desire to be the best she could possibly be in everything she did and ability to focus on what she could control led to a positive focus. Hello gorgies! Today, we're talking about why Jennette McCurdy is glad her mom (mam) died. This is a harrowing story of years-long maternal abuse but our Jen tells it with wit and charm. Saz didn't think she was a fan but by the end of the ep she sort of changes her mind? It's a goodun if you ask me (Paul) so have yourself a merry little read. I'd recommend an accompanying cosmopolitan. And if you don't have Cointreau, do a Sarah and pop in one segment of an easy peeler. We go on to talk about how strongly we felt emotions as kids (and adults). Sarah had to take a day off school after the tragic (but quite funny) demise of Flower the meerkat, and Paul missed a family trip because Mary Pierce tore her ACL and he cried so much it made him sick. I don't know why I'm talking about myself in the third person.See you next week for a SHEKSHY pirate who kidnaps a young man and has his booty. Adore you xxx Hosted on Acast. Ep.K394: Of Red Clay and French Existentialism The most prominent feature of the French Open is that this Grand Slam tournament takes place on the rusty red clay of Roland Garros, a beloved detail that is as much a part of local culture and tradition as the bouquinistes that sell art and used books along the Seine. And yet, as it so often is in the country that claims Albert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir, the relationship between France and its “terre bateau” is a little more complicated. This red clay that comes from a small brick factory in Oise, north of Paris, elicits so much love. But the clay has also become a symbol of deep frustration. A Frenchwoman has not won the singles championship that this country so treasures, the one that requires more grit but also more thought than any other, since Mary Pierce in 2000. A Frenchman has not won it in 39 years, since Yannick Noah in 1983. Why? The answer likely has a lot to do with a central contradiction in the home of red clay's biggest stage. Just 11.5% of the tennis courts in France are made of the traditional red clay and most of those are in private clubs. Another 16.5% of courts are made of an imitation clay surface that is similar to the terre bateau but plays harder and faster than the softer traditional clay. Winning on clay requires a Ph.D. in what coaches and players call point construction, which is shorthand for playing tennis like chess, thinking not only about this next shot but three shots down the line. Learning that to the point where it is instinctual can take years, and like most things, the earlier one starts training the brain to think that way, the better. “On clay, the fight really goes on and on,” said Aurelio Di Zazzo, a coach at the Tennis Club of Paris. “The longer the effort, the more you have to use your mind.” The club, which is less than 1 mile from Roland Garros, tries to carry red clay's torch as best it can. That torch is not cheap. Maintaining the courts requires four full-time employees, and new clay costs more than $2,000 a year for each court. Each court must be entirely dug up and redone every 15 years, costing more than $30,000 per court. Levy said it is worth it. “This clay is a part of France,” he said. Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/6379673

The guys recap and epic French Open that has left them both worn out. Expect the unexpected sums up the results for the women as Barbora Krejcikova builds off her Strasbourg win to take her first Grand Slam singles title... she took the doubles title to boot, becoming the first player since Mary Pierce in 2000 to achieve that feat. Aldwin and Jason break down the semis and what's next for players like Gauff, Sakkari and Pavlyuchenkova after their deepest slam runs yet. On the men's side Novak Djokovic is further snatching that G.O.A.T. status by completing the epic feat of out Rafa'ing Rafa Nadal in the semis, which featured one of the best sets of tennis ever played in the 3rd. Adding a flare for the dramatic, Djokovic would lose the first two sets to first time finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, only to regain momentum early in the third set and never look back. The guys review what makes Djokovic so good, what brings him so much hate, and his chances to surpass Rafa and Roger for most slams in 2021 as he works towards the Golden Slam (including the potential Olympic Gold in Tokyo). Then Caleb takes a look at the Starkville and Lubbock Regionals in the NCAA Baseball Tournament as it goes through the Super Regionals. Caleb goes from college to pro to recap the MLB series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. Last but not least Caleb goes through NBA Playoff results from the past few days.

Guest Jake Freudenberg joined the bench and teamed up with Dan to face Eric & Matt in a game hosted by Scott. In it we learned a lot about 90's and early 2000's female R&B singers, that there are a lot of candy related sports names, and of course that everyone knows Brad Daugherty is related to Matt. Eric also evidently enjoys talking about crack and booger sugar, and NOBODY knows who Mary Pierce is.
This week we’re celebrating former players who have been, in one way or another, ‘lost in time’ or under-appreciated. In part one, we discuss Manuel Orantes’ clay court dominance in the 1970s, Mark Edmondson’s Australian Open victory while ranked 212th, how Mary Pierce’s abusive father overshadowed her three peaks, the way in which Arantxa Sanchez Vicario did a lot more than finish in second place all the time, and Wendy Turnbull’s decade of consistency. “That’s one of the things I learned right away is you have to be willing to go on the court every single day and get fired, and stick up for what you believe in."

Today’s episode features world renowned speed coach, educator and author, Henk Kraaijenhof, back for his second appearance on the show. Henk is a breath of fresh air because of his practicality in regards to training. He is a figure with not only incredible knowledge of various training means (and the science behind those means) but also the practical success to back it up in a sport defined by quantitative measures (track and field). In a day where we tend to get distracted by “shiny” exercises and various training tools that seem as if they are the breakthrough to the next level in performance, Henk brings us all into a realistic point of view by which we can establish a proper baseline of what works, then proceed to the next level. On today’s show, we cover the basic ideas of training transfer to athletic speed, as well as a chat on the purpose of standard “strength to bodyweight” levels, and where they even came from. Henk also digs into some of the modern training tools we are seeing now, such as instability bags and weighted vests and shorts and if they are useful or just “fluff”. We’ll also get into Kaatsu (blood flow occlusion) training and some applied means by which this type of work could be applied, which could be particularly useful in training conditions where athletes might not be able to get outside and sprint. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points Rules of transfer for exercises into speed Barbell velocity and transfer into athletic movement Henk’s take on instability training in athletic enhancement Wearable resistance means to improve speed Henk’s experience in training track and field sprinters with no strength training or plyometrics Kaatsu (occlusion) training in applied performance settings Henk Kraaijenhof Quotes “It’s very hard to find a good transfer from a full squat to running 100m in my opinion” “A lot of coaches use exercises just because the exercises exist, and because they can” “Velocity based training has already been developed 30 years ago” “The moment you get to the gym, forget about specificity and transfer” “Where does 1.5x bodyweight in squat come from?” “How much can a cat squat, or a kangaroo?” “Only keep the core work (only directly event specific) and see how far you get” “For 200-400m who have to work in hypoxia, (Kaatsu) can be useful” “Combining Kaatsu with Mach drills could be a useful winter (indoor) training exercise” About Henk Kraiijenhof Henk Kraaijenhof coaching credentials include Nelli Cooman, Merlene Ottey, Troy Douglas and Tennis star Mary Pierce. His specialties are the physical and mental coaching, in particular stress and stress management and the methodology or training. When you consider both Ottey and Douglas ran world class times in their 40’s, something is working. Henk Kraaijenhof currently works for Vortx and his blog is helpingthebesttogetbetter.com. He has published work in performance, training systems and protocols for elite athletes and has also conducted research in the development and application of scientific training systems. Henk is also involved in scientific research projects in human sports performance in Norway, Estonia, Italy and the Netherlands. He is currently also working as a mentor for the Olympic coaches and Olympic talent coaches in Holland.
Coach and Corey are back and to be honest not their best effort. Her book Founding Friendships: Friendships between Men and Women in the Early American Republic (Oxford University Press, 2015) offers a historical examination of the cross-gender friendships that formed against great social odds and popular opinion that held that these relationships were highly irregular and impossible to maintain chaste. Beginning with the relationships of Abigail Adams and Thomas Jefferson; Eloise Richards Payne and William Ellery Channing; Charles Greely Loring and Mary Pierce and their elite circle, Good explores the depth of feelings, the language and tokens of love, issues of propriety, and the social and political risks of cross-gender friendship. These complicated relationships embodied the essential republican values of equality, freedom, choice, and virtue and challenged marriage as the ultimate human connection. Through her historical work, Good offers an opportunity to rethink the ways cross-gender friendships remain problematic. Lilian Calles Barger, www.lilianbarger.com, is a cultural, intellectual and gender historian. Her current book project is entitled The World Come of Age: Religion, Intellectuals and the Challenge of Human Liberation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
