Tracey Curtis-Taylor, (on the cover of the Winter OQ) is an adventurous aviator, who has retraced some of the most epic routes in flying history, from Capetown to London across the length of Africa, retracing Lady Heath's journey in 1928, and another from England to Australia, flying the same route as Amy Johnson in 1930. She now flies a 1940 Boeing Steerman, and joins the Commemorative Air Force in Camarillo in their events. Curtis-Taylor has created an educational program designed to get more women into flying, as the industry faces a dire pilot shortage and, with fewer than 5 percent of airline pilots as women, they need recruits. She wrote the book, "Bird," about her epic exploits. She is now based in Ojai. We talked about the Golden Age of Aviation, when the best engineers and pilots moved from the Wright Brothers' short hops to the first jet engines and breaking the sound barrier in 1947, an incredible period of progress and energy. She also talked about navigating the boys club of pilots, her crash landing, her upbringing between England and Canada, and much more. We did not talk about Keep Sespe Wild, Jeremy Saulnier films, or the "Magic Art of Tidying." You can learn more about Tracey from her website, BirdinaBiPlane.com

A lot of listeners worry that jazz has ossified in the last, say, fifty years or so, but Mike decides to do something about it, terminological speaking, anyway.  So this fortnight's episode explores the difference between curating a tradition and trying to create something new within it. Our test subjects comprise three brand-new releases (two instrumental, one vocal) and a vocal album from the nineties paying tribute to the Prince of Darkness himself, Miles Davis.  Curtis Taylor – TAYLOR MADE; Brandon Goldberg– LIVE AT DIZZY'S; April Varner – APRIL; Shirley Horn – I REMEMBER MILES.

At the same time, the world changes as do members of the group as Curtis grows in power in the music industry. Then...things get really weird. “Hootenanny A Go-Go,” aka “Once Upon A Coffee House” is a 1965 film based on an original story by and includes songs and music from our dad, Carl Yale (that's him with the sunglasses if you're on Libsyn). The film was shot in Miami at a breakneck pace in 1964 and was produced by Fred Berney. The idea came about as a result of Berney's visits to one of our father's (and uncle's) coffee houses in Miami – The Hootenanny – as the folk scene was coming to a crescendo at the advent of the British Invasion – and was intended as a vehicle for various folk artists at the time. Of note is the fact that the film was also the first-ever screen appearance by Joan Rivers. Here's our conversation with Fred – a look into the film itself, his life and career in media, and his take on Miami itself. In 1941, she became the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in botany from Fordham University. She spent her career at Howard University, becoming a beloved professor and mentor. Marie herself taught biology at Cardozo high school in Washington D.C early in her career. At Howard, she was passionate about training future generations of science teachers. And every summer, Marie's summer science institute helped high school teachers become better at teaching biology. Today, an auditorium at Howard University is named in her honor.   1926 Birth of David Austin (books by this author), English a rose breeder and writer. His technique was to breed roses with the best of both the old and new roses: blending the charm and fragrance of heirloom roses and the repeat-blooms and color options of modern roses. To his excellent staff, he was known simply as "Mr. A." David died in December 2018 at the age of 92. Today David Austin Roses is run by his son David and his grandson Richard. His niece is landscape architect, journalist, and radio personality Bunny Guinness. Her mother was David's sister. David once said, The work of the plant breeder should always be to enhance nature, not to detract from it....we should strive to develop the rose's beauty in flower, growth, and leaf.    1971 On this day, the New Jersey State Flower, the Violet, was officially adopted by the legislature after a proposal from Senator Josephine Margetts. Josephine and her husband, Walter, owned a nursery and an apple and peach orchard. She was a crusader for the environment and introduced legislation to protect the land and waterways of New Jersey. She worked to ban the use of DDT. By the time Josephine put forth her legislation for the Violet, New Jersey was the last state without an official state flower. When it came time for Josephine's bill to be debated, Senator Joseph J. Maraziti, R-Morris, read this poem: Roses are red, Violets are blue If you vote for this bill Mrs. Margetts will love you. Josephine's legislation was passed 30-1. The sole dissenting vote was Senator Frank Guarini, D-Hudson. He told the press, I'm a marigold man. As Josephine no doubt knew, Violets are spring flowers. They've been around for a long time - even the ancient Greeks loved violets. In floriography or the language of plants, their heart-shaped leaves are a clue to their meaning: affection, love, faith, and dignity. And the color of violets adds another layer of meaning. Blue violets symbolize love, white violets symbolize purity, and yellow violets convey goodness and high esteem.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Sleepy Cat Farm by Caroline Seebohm This book came out late in 2021, and the subtitle is A Gardener's Journey. The Sleepy Cat Farm Story begins in 1994 on six acres of land purchased by a retired CEO. Over twenty years later, those six acres have become a sprawling baker's dozen. With the help of landscape architect Charles stick, Fred Landman transformed Sleepy Cat into a true garden-lovers experience. (I do believe it is my new favorite garden…) The connective tissue between the garden spaces is the golden path that swoops past signature elements in the garden like a grotto, a celestial pavilion, a garden devoted to Japanese Iris, a spirit bridge, a koi pond, a reflection pool, a maze, serpentine hedges fashioned out of European hornbeam, and an enormous Atlas statue. The garden has become a popular stop for gardeners in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Fred is often found leading tours. If Sleepy Cat sounds like it appeared out of nowhere, well, it kind of did. There's also a bit of a mismatch between the name Sleepy Cat and the place's grandeur. The title references a dozen cats that get to live there. Even Ken Druse, who wrote the forward to this book, was a bit dubious about Sleepy Cat the first time he was invited to visit.  As was the photographer for the book Curtis Taylor. As Ken shares in the forward, Curtis has a way of figuring out if a garden is worth his time. He casually asks the garden's owner, "How many daffodils have you planted recently?" When he asked Fred this very question, the answer was, "Only 5000". This book tells the Sleepy Cat story, and the stunning images by Curtice Taylor make that story unforgettable. In fact, if you don't want to visit Sleepy Cat after getting the book, then you are not a gardener. This book is 192 pages of a garden transformation that would make Beatrix Farrand smile. You can get a copy of Sleepy Cat Farm by Caroline Seebohm and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for $30.   Botanic Spark 2006 On this day, the 2006 memoir, Eat, Pray, Love, by American author Elizabeth Gilbert (books by this author) is released. Chronicling the author's trip around the world after her divorce, the book was on The New York Times Best Seller list for 187 weeks and made into a movie (2010) starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. In the book, Elizabeth wrote, Then there was a pop-surprise bonus side order brought over by the waitress for free—a serving of fried zucchini blossoms with a soft dab of cheese in the middle (prepared so delicately that the blossoms probably didn't even notice they weren't on the vine anymore).   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

On this weeks show, you will hear part two of the recordings taken from the first Western Australian Rad Tour 2018 where activists travelled for 13 nights over 4,000 kilometres from Perth to the four proposed uranium mine sites : mulga rock, yeelirrie, wiluna and kintyre to hear and support Traditional Owners at the forefront of the campaign in WA to stop uranium mining.   The last proposed uranium mine site we visited on the WA Rad Tour was Kintyre and the Parnngurr Aboriginal Community, home to a group of Martu people of the Western Desert.  Parngurr is 370km west of Newman in the Pilbara. We visited the proposed Kintyre uranium mine site with the Taylor family, and spent the days listening, exploring and seeing this incredibly beautiful country.  Listen to the stories from Nancy, Muuki and Curtis Taylor and BUMP spokesperson, Bilbo Taylor.  A massive thanks to Curtis Taylor for the translation for this show.

Connection to Country : Fukushima to KintyreOn this weeks show we hear the strong testimony from Kenichi Hasegawa, a Fukushima dairy farmer who’s land, farm, life and community has been destroyed following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster that occurred in March 2011.  Hasegawa’s story was shared at the recent Making Waves event held nationally as part of the Peace Boat visit. Thanks to co-producer, Mara and the Adelaide Making Waves Forum for this recording of Kenichi Hasegawa’s moving testimony.   We will hear the powerful stories from Curtis Taylor, a young Martu leader, filmmaker and screen artist and Desmond Taylor, Martu man who’s connection to country is Kintyre and both share their stories on the threat of uranium mining on their country. Kintyre is on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert and the Little Sandy Desert. It is on the boundary of (and should still be included) in the Karlamilyi National Park.  Kintyre was excised from the Karlamilyi National Park (Rudall River) in 1994 - to allow for future mining.  The proposed Kintyre uranium mine project is jointly owned by Canadian company, Cameco (70%) and Japanese company, Mitsubishi Development (30%).  Cameco, Australia is proposing to construct and operate the Kintyre open-cut uranium mine, 270 kms north east of Newman. The project would include an airstrip, processing plant, waste rock dump, tailings storage facility, offices, accomodation and haul road.Today, they don’t have any final approvals, is not operating, needs further assessment and conditions to be met and the current uranium mine proposal is on hold because of the low uranium price. This proposal is still a long way off but as you will hear still causes significant stress and dissapointment as the Martu are still forced to negotiate over their lands, instead of this beautiful country being protected. The stories on this week’s show are powerful reminders of the damage that Australian uranium can do to the environment and communities both here in Australia and overseas.  We have a chance to learn from Fukushima and to ensure the same mistakes never happen again.  The only way we can sure that Western Australia uranium does not end up in nuclear weapons or radioactive waste is to keep it in the ground, and that is our responsibility.  Thank you Kenichi Hasegawa, Curtis Taylor and Desmond Taylor. This week’s guest is Curtis Taylor, sprints coach for Oregon University track and field.  Curtis has assembled one of the most dominating collegiate women’s sprint groups in history, featuring the likes of 2016 Olympians Ariana Washington (also 100/200m NCAA champ this past year), Deajah Stevens, and has consulted other successful athletes and Olympic competitors. Curtis also coached Hannah Cunliffe to a big PR with a sub-11 second 100m dash in her sophomore year as a transfer from Oklahoma. Curtis is one of the best sprint coaches in the nation, and I’m thrilled to have him on the podcast.  Back to back with Henk Kraaijenhof (ep 20), this could be considered one of the best “sprint doubles” in history! In this episode we go inside Curtis’ training philosophy and learn some things that have led to his sprint coaching successes. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: The use of plyometrics in training track sprinters, and key points of implementation Progressing plyometrics in context of contact time Curtis’s approach to strength training for sprinters Upper body training for sprinters Curtis’s thoughts on resisted and overspeed training devices Ideas on fixing sprint errors and cueing One of Curtis’s favorite sprint drills Curtis’s ideas on overdistance training and tempo Trochanter length as a rule by which to optimize sprint technique Loading and deloading ideals for sprint athletes Quotes: “With plyometrics, we are dealing with the ability to reduce ground contact time” “Most people want to increase the intensity of what they are doing (by raising the height of the hurdle or box).  By increasing the intensity, you end up increasing the ground contact time, which is not what you want to do!” “To apply more force on the ground, you need to spend more time on the ground to jump higher, and if we are spending more time on the ground, we are defeating the purpose of what a hurdle hop is for” “Even if you can recreate the movements of the track in the weightroom, you can’t move the weight as fast as what you can do on the track…there is a fine line with lifting, that you don’t go too far on the maximal strength end of things, and you aren’t sacrificing speed of movement” “We’ll have 4-6 weeks this fall where we are able to lift heavy” “As a coach, you have to figure out different cues that work for different people” “We don’t do a lot of running drills, but we do the same ones, there are millions of running drills, but you have got to find the ones that work best for you.  We have about 6 drills that work best for me, and I keep those in rotation” “Once you have established a culture within your group, the new kids can look at the older kids and figure out a way to do these things correctly” “People land too far in front of their body, then you have to wait until the foot comes under the center of mass until you can push.  Then your heel recovery is worse, recovering from way behind the body.  It’s a bad circle, in which it continues to get worse as you go down the track.  There is a skid drill we do, which involves an active paw to put you in the right position.  You can hear the way the drill sounds, watch someone do it right, and then try to recreate that sound.  When someone does it right, all the other mechanical issues start to clean themselves up” “The slower you run, the more your technique is compromised, and the more you run in bad technique, the more you emphasize bad technique” “I try to make sure that most of the stuff I’m doing, I can take to the starting line, whether it’s in the weightroom, in my drills, plyometrics; if I can’t take it to the starting line, then what’s the use of it?” “Your strength length is limited and influenced by your trochanter length; I can’t get someone who is ...

Nyarri Nyarri Morgan is a Martu man from the Western Desert who lives in the remote Parnngurr Community of W.A. He lived his early life with no contact with western culture until he witnessed an atomic test held by the British government in the South Australian desert. It was an experience that had a profound impact on Morgan and, over half a century later, led to a collaboration with Sydney-based immersive technology artist and director, Lynette Wallworth. His story is now the subject of the Virtual Reality film, Collisions. Collisions drops audiences in the middle of the Pilbara desert – home of Morgan and of the Martu people. This conversation will take Morgan’s experience filming Collisions as a starting point for a broader discussion of the issues facing the Martu people in this remote region of Western Australia. Joined by Wallworth, Nyarri's wife Nola and young filmmaker and Martu leader Curtis Taylor, Morgan will speak about his life, his work as an artist and the fate of the Martu people since the actions in Collisions took place. An activist elder who has seen his community through some dramatic changes, a speaker of seven western desert languages, an artist whose work has been exhibited across the world and a man whose story is now being shared in VR – meet this extraordinary Australian and his family for a discussion of culture, contention, creativity and collaboration. Lynette Wallworth is an acclaimed Australian artist and director whose immersive installations and films reflect connections between people and the natural world as well as explore fragile human states of grace. Curtis Taylor is a filmmaker, screen artist and a young Martu leader. Ngalangka Nola Taylor is a painter and one of the senior translators and cultural advisors on the Canning Stock Route Project.

Libby Purves meets farmer and broadcaster Adam Henson; writer Paul Spike; pilot Tracey Curtis-Taylor and theatre student Joe Langdon. Tracey Curtis-Taylor is a pilot who last year followed Amy Johnson's flight from the UK to Australia in her classic open cockpit biplane, Spirit of Artemis. Earlier this year the self-styled bird in a biplane attempted a round-the-world flight which ended when her vintage biplane lost power and crashed after take-off in the Arizona desert. She plans to be back in the skies when her plane is fully repaired. Paul Spike is a writer and journalist. His book Photographs of My Father was first published in 1973, seven years after his father, The Reverend Robert - Bob - Spike, was murdered. Bob Spike was a US church minister who was active in the civil rights movement in 1960s America alongside Martin Luther King Jr. His murder was never solved. Published by Knopf, Photographs of my Father has been reissued to mark 50 years since Bob Spike's death. Joe Langdon is studying theatre studies at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. His interest in drama was piqued when he was an inmate at a young offenders' institution. He attended workshops organised by the Bristol Old Vic as part of its outreach programme which helps young and disenfranchised people express themselves. This year the Bristol Old Vic celebrates its 250th anniversary. Adam Henson is a farmer and presenter of Adam's Farm on the BBC's Countryfile programme. He took over the Cotswold farm from his father, Joe, who as a champion of rare breeds, opened the Cotswold Farm Park in 1971 and was founder chairman of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. In his memoir, Like Farmer, Like Son Adam delves into his family's theatrical lineage - his grandfather was comedian and actor Leslie Henson and his uncle is the actor Nicky Henson. Like Farmer, Like Son is published by BBC Books. Producer: Paula McGinley.
