Story at-a-glance Low testosterone levels below 3.33 ng/mL increase kidney stone risk by 65%, regardless of other health factors like age, weight, or blood pressure Men aged 34 to 44 years old with low testosterone face a 29% higher risk of developing their first kidney stone compared to those with normal levels Maintaining testosterone above 360 ng/dL significantly reduces kidney stone risk, with protective benefits most pronounced in men over 40 years old Testosterone influences kidney stone formation possibly by affecting glycolate oxidase production, which catalyzes metabolites involved in stone development Natural ways to boost testosterone include reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, KAATSU training, optimizing diet, sunlight exposure, and balancing hormones with progesterone
Linda Kreter speaks today with Steven Munatones, who following a near-fatal heart attack, used a special Japanese practice to regain his health and vitality. The practice, called KAATSU improves elasticity of blood vessels, and enhances recovery - his life turned around. Living in Japan for a time, he incorporated the KAATSU practices into his life with gratitude and discipline. We can all learn from his story and his very positive outcome despite the odds.
Welcome back to Pushing the Limits for another insightful episode. Today, we dive into Kaatsu Training with Sandy Nelson, exploring how this blood flow restriction technique boosts bone density, muscle growth, and brain health for older adults and athletes. Key Points: Research suggests Kaatsu Training helps older adults with osteopenia by improving bone density. It seems likely that Kaatsu Training increases IGF-1 and BDNF, supporting muscle and brain health. The evidence leans toward Kaatsu Training offering neuroprotection, likely via BDNF. Kaatsu Training appears to enhance athlete performance, aiding recovery and strength. What is Kaatsu Training? Kaatsu Training, also known as Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training, is a method where special bands partially restrict blood flow to the limbs during exercise. This creates a hypoxic environment in the muscles, promoting growth and strength with lighter loads. It was developed in Japan by Dr. Yoshiaki Sato and is used for both rehabilitation and performance enhancement. Benefits for Older Adults and Osteopenia For older adults, Kaatsu Training can help combat osteopenia, a condition with low bone density. Studies suggest it can maintain or increase bone density, reducing fracture risk and supporting mobility, especially for those with joint issues like osteoarthritis. Its low-impact nature makes it suitable, allowing strength gains without excessive joint stress. Impact on IGF-1, BDNF, and Neuroprotection Research indicates Kaatsu Training increases Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), vital for muscle and bone health, and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), important for brain health. This likely contributes to neuroprotection, potentially reducing neurodegenerative disease risk by supporting cognitive function. Benefits for Athletes For athletes, Kaatsu Training can enhance performance by improving muscle strength and hypertrophy with lighter weights. It can also aid recovery by promoting growth hormones, reducing muscle damage, and allowing more frequent, intense training, benefiting Olympians and professional athletes. As a KAATSU Certified Coach, Sandy specializes in helping build and maintain your strength and stamina over 50. She also helps healthcare professionals implement KAATSU within their practices and with their clients.

Is it possible to build muscle without lifting weights? Can we tone our facial muscles? Is it possible to improve our cardiovascular system with almost no effort? Today, we sit down with former USA swim coach and Kaatsu CEO Steven Munatones. He tells us all about his decades-long journey of discovery and tutelage under Dr. Yoshiaki Sato in Tokyo, wherein he studied the myriad benefits of Japanese Kaatsu bands and developed a plan to introduce this technology to the world. Huge amounts of research out of Japan are showing that one can maintain strength and vitality as they age, improve overall vascular function, rehabilitate injuries all with zero risk of injury. What kind of SuperAger are you? They do it for a variety of reasons, and there's a lot of literature out there by researchers, scientists, physicians, and physical therapists, and you want to do this mostly to build muscle. Building muscle helps if you're injured, maybe you had a surgery on your knee, maybe you broke your arm. It helps reduce atrophy. And so part of the recovery process is rebuilding that muscle loss. When you use BFR, you actually reduce the amount of muscle atrophy that you get, so your body will heal itself and then you go through a shorter recovery period because you're not losing as much muscle mass.”“Fundamentally, what's happening is a bit of hypoxia or lack of oxygen in the muscle. If you do movement as simple as bicep curls. It could be stretching, it can be walking, whatever you want to do that leads to that uncomfortable feeling you have when you work out. That lactate sends a signal through your central nervous system up to your brain. And then the brain thinks that you are doing something very vigorous, something very intense. And when the brain receives that signal again, the brain does not know if you're lifting heavy weight or you're just doing BFR. So it reacts as it naturally does and produces growth hormones amongst other metabolites, which flow through our vascular system and promote muscle growth”“The Japanese found that when you engorged the limbs and blood and you do slight movement, this is the most effective way to trigger those signals up to the brain and then release a variety of hormones.”Connect with StevenKaatsuLinkedInBook: Open Water Swimming
Episode 164 of the Fit Father Project Podcast is all about blood flow restriction (BFR) and the unique benefits of BFR training. In this episode, you'll meet Steven Muñatones, the CEO and co-founder of KAATSU, the pioneer and world leader in BFR training for recovery, rehabilitation, and performance.Steven has taught KAATSU applications and benefits to thousands, including Navy SEALs, Olympic gold medalists, and people in their 80s and 90s. Linda Kreter and WiseHealth Radio speak with the co-founder of KAATSU, Steven Munatones about this about this unique portable method for increasing blood level elasticity, benefits of muscle development in rehab or recovery, and the empowerment of better wellness. KAATSU in Japanese means “additional pressure”, and unlike constricting bands that constrict bloodflow, KAATSU works to gently apply pressure in U-shaped bladders to apply gentle arterial flow and to slow venous return. This creates more flexible blood vessels and blood flow, also allowing muscle gains to be made in their oldest patients (late 90's and into the 100yo group). Helping to Thrive!

Muscle losses begin at age 30 - if we're not doing anything to prevent them. The average (and no you're not!) individual will lose 3-8% of muscle per decade and a significant amount by age 60. After that, it accelerates. Again.. This is based on historical data. How about we change history? Loss of muscle is a choice. Now that we have the science. You're either choosing to lose it or choosing not to. Today on the Flipping 50 show, a tool how not to. Even if… you are in bed rest, you're injured, you're traveling, you're caregiving or in front of a computer 8 hours a day. We've discussed blood flow restriction bands here on Flipping 50 before. This goes a bit deeper. It's the upgrade. If gaining muscle over 50 is right where you are and exactly what you want, this is your episode. However, it's also for your older aging parents, for preparedness if you are injured, for your younger sons and daughters maybe more sedentary and less motivated. If you're a regular listener of this show, you know we're big fans of building muscle over 50. As Dr. Gabrielle Lyon tells us, muscle is the organ of longevity. Muscle helps keep us functioning at a high level as we age, it gives us a lean toned body, and we know that generally speaking, more muscle means a faster metabolism which means more calories burned per day. But gaining muscle can be difficult. It requires some form of resistance training – typically with weights. It requires progressive overload, and it requires us to fuel ourselves properly to create an environment conducive to muscle growth. But what if there was a shortcut, a hack so to speak? What if there was something we could do – not to replace strength training – but to complement and enhance the hard work we do in the gym that required very minimal additional effort on our part? Sound too good to be true? Stick around, we're gonna deep dive into this technology and show you exactly how to build and keep muscle as you age. My guest today is Steven Munatones. Stephen is the CEO and co-founder of KAATSU which is a pioneer in the blood flow restriction market. Steven has introduced KAATSU successfully to collegiate and professional sports teams, branches of US military, and as you'll soon hear – to a large population of people just like you and me. Steven is an accomplished athlete himself. He was a NCAA Division I water polo player and swimmer, he's a Guinness World Record holder, inductee in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and the Ice Swimming Hall of Fame, and the recipient of the Poseidon Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame. He coached the USA Swimming national team at 9 international competitions, including 4 world championships, served as an NBC commentator at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and founded WOWSA, the World Open Water Swimming Association. Join us today as Steven shares exactly how we might harness blood flow restriction technology for recovery, rehabilitation, performance, and longevity. I started our conversation by asking Steven how he got interested in blood flow restriction. I am introducing to you something that you either never heard of, or don't know much about. And that's blood flow restriction training also known as BFR training. It sounds scary, restricting the flow of blood in your body. Why would you do that? Well, the list is long. I personally do it, because as we lose our estrogen with menopause, we find it so much harder to build muscle as we age. And it's not to be a body builder. It's to NOT be frail. It's to bounce back when we fall. And if we do get injured, we can keep our muscle mass to recover faster. But there is so much more to BFR and we take a deep dive into it all with my guest Steven Munatones who is the CEO of the Rolls Royce of BFR bands called KAATSU. Steven is American, but spent a lot of time in Japan where he met Dr. Yoshiaki Sato who invented the original BFR Kaatsu bands back in 1966 to heal people with all kinds of ailments. For years Dr. Sato alongside cardiologists at the University of Tokyo Hospital tested and researched the product with over 7,000 cardiac rehab patients. Steven decided that the world needs to hear more about BFR and went on to co-found Kaatsu Global with Dr. Sato. Now, doctors, athletes, the military, body builders, patients in recovery, biohackers and even octogenerians are going crazy for Kaatsu because it can be used to help build and maintain muscle, improve stem cell concentration, boost testosterone and collagen, lower neuropathic pain, improve brain health, blood circulation and bone health. There is so much to unpack here, but in this episode we concentrate on building and maintaining muscle for women going through menopause…and also talk about the beauty benefits too. Research, equipment, and protocols are the three things that differentiate this method of blood flow restriction training from the others… My guest this week is Steven Munatones, CEO & Co-founder of KAATSU Global, Inc. In this episode, Steven and I discuss how KAATSU differs from other blood flow restriction products, how KAATSU can be effective for pain management, and the benefits of using KAATSU to increase athletic performance. We also get a little deeper into some of the protocols, and discuss different use cases. Steven Munatones has launched new products, services and technologies in the U.S. over the last 20 years. At TOTO Frontier, he licensed TOTO's sanitary ware technologies outside of Japan. At RealLiveSports, he designed and marketed the ESPN Play by Play, a 2006 Toy of the Year. At Aruze Gaming America, he launched hybrid slot machine reel technology in the gaming industry. At the World Open Water Swimming Association, he utilized 9 years of national team coaching to help shape and promote the new Olympic sport of marathon swimming. The Harvard graduate and certified KAATSU Master Instructor co-founded KAATSU Global with Dr. Sato, the Japanese inventor of KAATSU, to introduce next-generation KAATSU equipment. What we discuss: 00:01:02 The distinction between KAATSU and other blood flow restriction products 00:07:53 The origins of KAATSU 00:11:47 The body's hormonal response to blood flow restriction 00:19:21 How KAATSU is supporting brain health 00:22:22 Why amputees can benefit from using KAATSU 00:32:07 Using KAATSU to manage arthritis and joint pain 00:40:48 The benefits of using KAATSU for athletic performance 00:58:57 How KAATSU can help build muscle mass 01:03:04 The best place for people to go for different types of protocols Key Takeaways: KATSUU is a Japanese word made out of two characters: “additional” and “pressure”. While we refer to these devices as “blood flow restriction” devices, the goal of KAATSU is to provide additional pressure to allow blood to flow into the small areas in your capillaries normally, and then slow it down temporarily. There are several different ways you can use KAATSU to improve performance, including using it for warm up, for peak performance, in the cyclical mode, and in the constant mode. Each of those applications has a different impact on your physiology. Since most of the hormonal release of the human body happens while we're asleep, using a very light application of KAATSU can help you fall into REM sleep quicker, and can keep you there longer. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training, which Dr. Mercola perceives to be the greatest innovation in exercise training in the last century, was developed in Japan by Dr. Yoshiaki Sato in 1966. There, it's known as KAATSU, which means "additional pressure." KAATSU was brought to the U.S. just over a decade ago by Steven Munatones, after he completed a 13-year mentorship by Sato.
John Doolittle is a former Navy SEAL Captain, Chief Revenue Officer for Kaatsu and a public speaker. We discuss his journey into the Navy, the power of mentorship, his perspective on war, human performance, blood flow restriction, the Frogman Swim, transition, sleep and so much more.
Join Dr. Jeffrey Gladden and Steve in this episode with Sten Stray-Gundersen. Sten is a leading Blood Flow Restriction expert. He has his Masters of Science from the University of Texas at Austin, where he conducted several studies centered around BFR as it relates to the cardiovascular system. He is now a Ph.D. Candidate at UT Austin, where he works with aging populations as his dissertation work focuses on the vascular responses to hypoxia in older adults. Sten is also a BFR Master Trainer and works at ROI Performance Center, where he prescribes BFR protocols and methodologies for clients of all ages and lifestyles. Sten has also applied BFR in his work with Olympians and elite military personnel. In this episode, they talk about what Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is all about, how it affects circulation, and how to implement BFR for recovery from an injury and for cognitive and physical benefits and longevity. Do you wish to know how to combine BFR with exercise and other activities? Listen to find out more. Listen to this episode to learn about making 100 the new 30, and living beyond 120! Dr. Gladden forewarns that the BFR conversation is a very fascinating one. (1:13) Dr. Gladden explains that Sten is an expert in Blood Flow Restriction. (1:28) Sten talks about his background story and how his father taught them some of the things he practices today in exercise physiology. (3:00) Dr. Gladden throws light on Kaatsu as similar to tying a tourniquet on your leg while exercising or applying pressure to restrict blood flow. (4:06) Dr. Gladden explains what ‘ischemic' is and that it means not having blood flow to an area. (6:00) Sten gives an example of intermittent blood flow restriction and its effect. (8:35) Dr. Gladden references Vasper and Peter Wasowski's work. (10:55) Dr. Gladden asks Sten if low-oxygen concentration breathing has an effect on those with coronary disease. (14:05) Dr. Gladden asks Sten if he can measure tissue saturation when putting the B-Strong Bands on. (17:50) Steve mentions that Dr. Gladden carries the B-Strong Bands when he travels. (20:55) Dr. Gladden speaks about how the B-Strong Bands are helping in his work. (22:51) Dr. Gladden asks Sten if he has tried the ARX. (24:44) Sten says the size of band is determined by the limb girth. (27:14) Sten refers to how mercury gives elasticity to the bands. (29:57) Sten clarifies about using the bands with other devices. (31:55) Dr. Gladden asks Sten to talk about cardiovascular health. (34:09) Sten notes that cardiovascular issues are still the number one killer. (36:14) Sten refers to his interest in vascular health and aging. (38:30) Steve wants to know how long he can have the band on. (40:00) Sten says that there may be benefits to the bands aerobically as well. (43:02) Dr. Gladden points out that molecular hydrogen is an excellent way to balance oxidative stress. Dr. Cory is a KAATSU advocate. He's in his mid-30s, married, has a couple of kids, a couple of dogs and because he chose to put his family first, his exercise and training suffered. Then he found KAATSU and was able to sustain his physical and training goals in a fraction of the time. He was so amazed with the system but couldn't believe there was no downside. So he travelled to Japan to meet the inventor, Dr. Sato, and he found out the only sacrifice one makes by using KAATSU is that the more KAATSU one has, the less medication one takes.
