Donation Needs of Local Food Pantries

In this episode of the Valley Today, Janet shares more of the recent conversation with Andrea Cosans, the executive director at Winchester CCAP. The pair explored the types of donations that are most needed at local food pantries. Andrea emphasized that while traditionally only non-perishable items were accepted, these days, many food pantries have the capacity to store perishable items like dairy products, meats, and fresh produce, thanks to grants and improved refrigeration capabilities. Andrea mentioned that there is always a high demand for dairy items such as butter and eggs, which are rarely donated, especially in the winter. She also highlighted the challenges with obtaining produce and meat regularly. Although the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank supplies some staple items, there are periods when essential items like meat and cereal might be unavailable. Pantries now need more than just food donations. Items like laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and personal hygiene products are costly and always in demand. Andrea also noted the necessity of bottled water for clients who may not have access to potable water and to keep volunteers hydrated. Children's snacks, cheese, and even pet food were pointed out as beneficial donations. There's also a strong collaboration between nonprofits in the area, sharing resources and support, which is crucial for operational efficiency. Andrea explained that outdated or unusable clothing should be donated to hospice services for reclamation to avoid wastage. Andrea provided details about how to help and where to drop off donations at CCAP, including their website and hours of operation. Financial donations are also welcome to allow the pantry to purchase needed items directly. In the second segment, listeners were encouraged to support food pantries by donating or volunteering. A rundown of several food pantries in the Shenandoah Valley area was given, with information on their locations, operation hours, and specific needs, emphasizing that local food pantries require continuous community support, especially during the holiday season. This is by no means a complete list. You can access more resources on the United Way NSV website by clicking here. You can download their Community Resource Directory by clicking here. Annsville Circle rezoned for housing and retail The Town of Cortlandt is laying the groundwork to redevelop a mostly barren stretch of Route 9 just south of Philipstown with housing, businesses and a promenade along Annsville Creek. Cortlandt last year approved zoning for the Annsville Waterfront Enhancement District, which has 38 parcels on 41 acres along Route 9 north of Annsville Circle, the roundabout that connects Route 9 (Albany Post Road) and Routes 6 and 202. The district extends along Highland Avenue to the town's border with Peekskill. On Route 9 north of the Table 9 Restaurant and Mobil gas station, the roadside is lined with empty buildings with for-sale signs. There is also an auto repair center and a maintenance facility used by the state Department of Transportation. Under the revised zoning, residences, restaurants, retail stores and hotels will be allowed in the district and, with special permits, developers will be able to build mixed-use residential projects. Cortlandt is requiring projects having more than five units of housing to designate 10 percent as "affordable" under Westchester County guidelines. Property owners will be given incentives to build a 10- to 15-foot-wide promenade for pedestrians and bicyclists along Annsville Creek, which passes under the Jan Peeck Bridge and connects to the Hudson River. "There's talk about building a hotel," said Richard Becker, the Cortlandt supervisor. "And we have three developers interested in developing significant apartment-style housing because there's such a housing shortage." Cortlandt is nearly finished with a design for a water and sewer district covering the area, where properties rely on wells and septic systems, said Becker. Westchester County has allocated $7 million to the $14 million project and Rep. Mike Lawler recently announced $1 million in federal funding, said Becker. Cortlandt has applied for a grant to cover the balance. "We've met with many of the property owners and there's tremendous interest because many of their septic fields are failing and the properties can't be redeveloped without adequate water and sewer," he said. Another problem, flooding, is supposed to be addressed by a $26 million, two-year project to raise Annsville Circle by 4 feet and a half-mile section of Route 6 by 7 feet. Gov. Kathy Hocul announced the launch of that project on Monday (July 15). Those areas, which are increasingly vulnerable as climate change drives the Hudson River higher, will be raised with fill made from recycled glass, an environmentally friendly alternative that will reduce by a year the project's completion, according to the governor's office. The plan includes a path connecting Paddlesports Park with the Jan Peeck Bridge, new crosswalks and landscaping at the center of the roundabout. Contractors are nearly finished replacing a culvert over Putnam Creek on Route 6/202. "It'll be more compact, a smaller circle, and designed in a more modern fashion so there'll be less merging of traffic," said Becker. "It's a dangerous intersection now." He called the area the "gateway" to northern Westchester and an opportunity to fulfill the state's goal of building more housing, which is facing resistance in some municipalities. Cortlandt has submitted a letter notifying the state of its intention to seek certification under its Pro-Housing Community program. Certified communities, such as Beacon, receive preference for housing grants. "You don't want to change the nature of existing residential areas, so this is a way of putting some apartments into the community without impacting other communities," Becker said.

The RCMP say a young person from Wolfville died during flooding caused by heavy rains in the Annapolis Valley on Thursday, July 11th. Police didn't release their name or gender, but they are believed to be a young teenager. RCMP were called at 7:40 p.m. by someone reporting that the teen was pulled into a water-filled ditch at a community park on Highland Avenue and disappeared under the rushing water. Police said a group of friend were playing at the park when the flash flooding occurred. The park, behind Acadia University's Crowell Tower, includes play equipment, a soccer pitch and a skate park. Police say that as part of the efforts, the water drainage system was diverted. The youth was found dead at about 11:30 p.m. Details:

Hollywood business owners are upset and frustrated after planters that were installed to keep homeless encampments from growing were ordered to be removed. The planters and garden beds were placed along the sidewalk on Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue in May after shop owners said homeless encampments had completely blocked sidewalks and access paths for almost two years. The driveway to Sunset Sound Recording Studio was inaccessible due to the sheer amount of tents on the sidewalk which continued to increase. The studio was nearly forced to close after they were targeted in a burglary in which thieves defecated on a drum set. They were later targeted in an arson attempt. Many owners said the encampments brought dangers to residents as buildings were vandalized and patrons were threatened. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Built not bought is what defines Jose Romero. From Harbor City, Jose's exposure to the art of lowriding came at the young age of 11, when an older homeboy took him and a few others to Whittier Boulevard for a cruise in a patterned out Vega. Jose was instantly hooked by the sights, sounds, and ambience of the Boulevard and is where his love for cruising and lowriding came to fruition. Setting him up to be a prestigious car builder, Jose and his family moved from Harbor City to National City in 1980, where he would experience the famous cruising on Highland Avenue. Jose quickly got involved in the local lowrider scene by joining Classics Bike Club, where he created an award winning lowrider bike that won first place at the World of Wheels. Soon after, he found himself in his first car, a 1968 Impala that he got for $200 and not long after, he was cruising everywhere. Destined to work with his hands, Jose and Sal Manzano pursued automotive painting at Del Rey as well as learning from San Diego's finest, Benny Flores. The 90's were one of the greatest decades in lowriding and Jose Romero's contributions are notably apparent. From doing a ‘59 Impala Convertible conversion that came to be Suavecito ‘59, to the impeccable Suavecito ‘58, Jose's execution has been acknowledged all over the world. Aside from the art on wheels he creates, Jose shares how his iconic brand, STR8CLOWNIN went from an idea, to a reality. Not only did STR8CLOWNIN establish itself as a brand, Jose's vision was to share the lifestyle he dedicated himself by creating the STR8CLOWNIN Tour, one of the biggest custom lowrider shows on the West Coast. As talented and impactful as he is, Jose Romero displays his love for lowriding sincerely. He teaches us authenticity, loyalty, and above all, the power of knowledge and keeping an open mind. He embraces cultura, familia, and respect amongst each other, because at the end of the day, we're united through our love for the game. Jose Romero's life can be turned into a movie; he's done and seen it all and continues to push forward no matter was obstacle he's faced with. Always staying true to himself and never forgetting where he comes from, we celebrate his life, career, and resiliency. Jose Romero is as OG as it gets, and that, along with his ongoing contributions to lowriding will stand the test of time.

True Crime Stories of Insurance Fraud Number 27 Riots & Insurance Fraud Barry Zalma, Esq., CFE presents videos so you can learn how insurance fraud is perpetrated and what is necessary to deter or defeat insurance fraud. This Video Blog of True Crime Stories of Insurance Fraud with the names and places changed to protect the guilty are all based upon investigations conducted by me and fictionalized to create a learning environment for claims personnel, SIU investigators, insurers, police, and lawyers better understand insurance fraud and weapons that can be used to deter or defeat a fraudulent insurance claim. In the spring of 1992, riots broke out in Los Angeles. Arson and looting persisted for three days until the National Guard was called in to bring peace to the streets. The insured, the owner and operator of a failing restaurant saw the riots as an opportunity. Chez Expensive was in Hollywood. It catered to a small motion picture and television producers who gather along Highland Avenue between Third Street and Hollywood Boulevard. The motion picture business was bad. The television commercial business was bad. Chez Expensive began to see luncheon crowds of three couples. The insured was barely grossing enough to pay his rent. Riots and civil commotion cause everyone hardship. Innocents suffer the most. Those with criminal intent, however, take advantage of the misery of others. This story, unlike all of the stories in this book, is purely fictional. After more than 53 years in the insurance industry dealing with arson and insurance fraud almost continuously, I believe I can safely estimate that at least 10 percent of the six thousand fires set in the 1992 Los Angeles riots were not caused by the rioters. I assume, similarly, that about 10 percent of the fires set by BLM and ANTIFA activists in Portland, Seattle and Minneapolis were not caused by the rioters. It is a distressing comment on our society that in a time of civil unrest the innocents suffer, usually honest and honorable people are tempted to steal from an insurance company, and the criminal's profit. © 2022 – Barry Zalma Barry Zalma, Esq., CFE, now limits his practice to service as an insurance consultant specializing in insurance coverage, insurance claims handling, insurance bad faith and insurance fraud almost equally for insurers and policyholders. The Oscars may be over, but Hollywood is about to be overrun with a different kind of A-lister this week when the art world descends on Tinseltown for the second edition of Frieze Los Angeles. Despite the glut of disposable income earned from media moguls and tech startups, it has long proven difficult for East Coast dealers to make inroads with prospective clients on the country's opposite flank. In this context, the success of Frieze's southern California debut last year was a pleasant surprise. One gallery that has had no problem endearing itself to a diverse audience in Los Angeles from the start is Various Small Fires. Co-founded in 2012 by Esther Kim Varet and her husband Joseph Varet, VSF, as it's commonly known, occupies a highly coveted spot along a gallery-rich stretch of Highland Avenue in Hollywood. Its Johnston Marklee-designed Art Deco-style building boasts a 3,000-square-foot main gallery connected to two adjacent project spaces, a roofless back patio that acts as an oasis in the midst of the bustling city, and the rare eco-friendly pedigree of running on 100 percent solar energy. Though the roster is small, VSF's 12 artists hold an outsize claim on the LA art scene—and beyond—with strong institutional presences and a near-constant waiting list for new work. One key to this impressive reach? The gallery's forward-looking decision to embrace Kim Varet's Korean heritage and open a second permanent space in Seoul in early 2019, allowing VSF to connect with young collectors on both sides of the Pacific. On this week's episode, Andrew Goldstein speaks to Esther Kim Varet from her office in California about what makes VSF an outlier in the often-staid, anachronistic world of art galleries, how dealers can win their artists institutional sustainability in an increasingly market-oriented field, and why photorealist painter Calida Rawles is poised to lead a renaissance of the underappreciated genre.

We were able to sit down with comedian Paul Spratt backstage for a quick, but memorable, episode of the Lehigh Valley with Love Podcast. A bit about Paul Spratt: Paul born in Boston but grew up in Pennsylvania brings a unique and different outlook to the world he lives in through his comedy. Knowing both the crowded city life but also the quiet country life leads him to have a different view on everything happening in his own life and around him. Paul brings a honest truthful in your face kind of honesty about what a lot of us take for granted in the everyday world. Comedy therapy where someone says what you were always thinking. Paul also loves to take time to donating to charity events, running, and working his own events for one of his favorite charities B4BC.org where he’s raised over $10,000 for breast cancer. Rising through a relatively unknown comedy scene in Scranton, PA to becoming an up and coming comic now in the New York city scene. Paul has been seen working in a lot of the clubs in the tri-state area and also finished high in some well regarded comedy competitions and festivals. Multi-time semi-finalist in the March Madness Comedy competition at the Stress Factory Comedy Club Laughing Skull Comedy Festival Winner of New Jersey’s funniest comic at the Stress Factory Semi Finalist in Helium’s Philly’s Phunniest Semi- Finalist in Last Comix Standing at Comix at Foxwoods Winner of Wisecrackers comedy competition Semi- Finalist in the Comedy Cabaret comedy competition Cape May Comedy Festival Paul regularly opens on the road for comic Joe Matarese but also has opened for many other big name comedians such as Dom Irrera, Dave Attell, and many more. Roger Cossack on the most exciting legal moment of his life - "I had my voice, and I had my moment. I lost six to three. Nevertheless, it was . . . my one and only time before the United States Supreme Court, but it was probably the most exciting legal moment of my life. My mother was there, and my son was there and my wife was there." Roger Cossack, ESPN Sports Legal Analyst and Law Professor A Ockershausen: This is Our Town. This is Andy Ockershausen, and we're talking and going to talk to Roger Cossack, the 1999 Vanity Fair one of the movers and shakers of Washington radio, TV and broadcast. 1999, do you remember that year, Rog? Roger Cossack: I was going to say that must be another Roger Cossack. A Ockershausen: Vanity Fair of all mag. What happened to Broadcasting and USA Today and so forth? Roger Cossack: No, they never recognized me. A Ockershausen: Sports Illustrated. Roger, tell us now. You are from the West Coast. You're a West Coast guy, but you grace our town and have for many years, and we have really appreciated it. Tell me about your early life on the coast, LA. Roger Cossack: Well, I went to UCLA undergraduate and UCLA law school. A Ockershausen: Where'd you go to school? I mean, to grammar school. Cheremoya Avenue Grammar, Hollywood High and Ricky Nelson Roger Cossack: I went to Cheremoya Avenue Grammar School, but probably the most notable place I went was, I went to Hollywood High School. A Ockershausen: Hollywood High. Roger Cossack: I went to Hollywood High School, and my claim to fame is, is that I sat next to Ricky Nelson. We both sat on the bench for the football team, and neither one of us played too much. A Ockershausen: What a famous, famous, fabulous high school, though. Hollywood High. Roger Cossack: Yeah, it was- A Ockershausen: Was it on Sunset? Roger Cossack: It is on Highland Avenue between Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard. It was a great time to go to Hollywood High School. A Ockershausen: Oh my God, yeah. Roger Cossack: It was a fun time to go. A Ockershausen: Celebrity school, right? Roger Cossack: Well, yeah. There were a lot of celebrities who went there. I'm trying to think of some of them. I think, as I told you, Ricky Nelson, but I can't remember any of them now, now but there were some. There were always, you know, pretty girls who were leaving to go be in the movies. That's the way our- A Ockershausen: A lot of friends of mine from ABC Television who lived on the West Coast, their kids went to Hollywood High when they were coming up in the business. It was so important that they get that LA feeling. Why would you then go to school, you went down the road to UCLA? UCLA Undergrad and Law School Roger Cossack: Well, UCLA it was a very good reason, Andy. A Ockershausen: Did your family live down there? Roger Cossack: Well, my family lived in Los Angeles, but- A Ockershausen: West Los Angeles? Roger Cossack: Not so much. We lived in Hollywood, and the reason that I went to UCLA is because, it was a very good reason, was that UCLA, it was and is a public university, and that was where I could afford to go to school. It was inexpensive and it- A Ockershausen: One of the most gorgeous campuses in the free world. Roger Cossack: It's a beautiful place. It was a great opportunity for me to be able to go there. It was very inexpensive, and get a great education. In fact, I loved it so much I stayed six years. There was a couple of little- A Ockershausen: That's irregular. Roger Cossack: Yeah, a couple of little interruptions- A Ockershausen: Roger. Roger Cossack: Which we won't go into, but nevertheless I stayed six years. Then, the UCLA law school let me in and I was able to get a legal education at UCLA law school. A Ockershausen: Did Ricky go with? No, he went into showbiz. This week: BAS on the west coast! We talk to Adriana Salazar and John Spiak, director and chief curator of the Grand Central Art Center, which has an exhibition of Adriana's work up currently. Also, we talk to Sabina Ott about The Terrain Exhibitions Biennial which is this coming weekend! Plan your life around seeing us at EXPO!!! You know you want to. ADRIANA SALAZAR: NOTHING ELSE LEFT 2013 California-Pacific Triennial Partnership with Orange County Museum of Art July 6 through September 22, 2013 Is there an end to our existence? Can we be separated from our bodies and be transformed into something else? Adriana Salazar's work has continued to revolve around these questions in different ways. This is why the realm of mortuary customs appeals to her: it presents numerous ways to approach the ultimate unknown. Her past series of works have attempted to bring inanimate objects to life; crystalize human actions into mechanical devices; worked to blur the line that separates the natural and the artificial. Death has been an ever-present part of her work, understood in a broader sense, in her own words, "I want to address death as a dare to the certainties of knowledge, and as a challenge to deeply rooted traditions. Thus, my work has taken its course transforming mechanical actions, obsolete objects, fading plants and passing life into installations and objects that could become questioning situations themselves." For this current series, created during a two-month residency at Grand Central Art Center, the artist desired to go deeper into that moment of transition between life and death, finding out as much as she could about what happens with our bodies, with our consciousness and with everything we build around the death of others. In her words, "I found, amongst other things, that there is an aesthetics of transition, that there are rituals trying to maintain life after death, and laws which govern our bodies, even when we are not fully present. I also found out that there are transitional techniques and an intricate industry around them." Some of these techniques of transition have the purpose of dematerializing the body - its physical presence, associated to life and its impermanence - replacing it with a different kind of immaterial presence. In the crematory, a compartment ignites at a very high temperature until the body is almost entirely dissolved. In order to secure the transparency of this transition, all particles of bone are carefully separated from any other solid object that might exist in our remains. These foreign bodies - implants, replacements, metal bodily parts, and every sign of our artificial self - must be removed. All that is left are bones, which are then reduced to the size of grains of sand. These remains are kept in homes, spread at symbolic locations, interned at traditional burials site, or used in other creative manners. The artificial parts, on the other hand, are usually recycled for their metals or tossed away. Salazar has decided to rescue as many cremated artificial body parts possible. These parts remain as solid as they were inside their bodies and are nevertheless considered residue. She found their value in this very ambiguity. They embody the question of the status of our own existence on a physical level: their materiality creates confusion between those objects as parts of a physical body and our own body, thus opening the gap between our certainties and uncertainties, beyond the matter of human death itself. The simple presence of these objects puts the status of life into question, allowing us to see, on one hand, the death of usage and value as something applicable to our own bodies. They allow us to see, on the other hand, the possibility of our existence as purely impermanent, earthly and physical. They allow us to see our possible becoming.
