What if the honey locust tree holds the key to transforming American agriculture yet remains an untapped treasure? Join us as we explore this remarkable tree's profound historical significance and unique attributes. We guide you through its pre-human landscapes and symbiotic relationship with Pleistocene megafauna, shedding light on how its fearsome thorns might have served as tattoo tools for indigenous peoples. With insights from Dr. Robert Warren, we unravel the intriguing journey of the honey locust, drawing comparisons to the Kentucky coffee tree and pondering its adaptation to wet regions through human intervention. In a lighthearted and anecdotal manner, we delve into the quirky connections between anachronistic trees like the honey locust and Kentucky coffee tree, alongside their relationships with now-extinct species. Discover the indigenous significance of the honey locust's sweet pulp, a sugar alternative in warmer regions, and laugh with us as we draw amusing parallels with modern-day treats like candy corn. While we acknowledge the mysteries surrounding ancient methods of processing honey locust pulp, our light-hearted exploration invites you to imagine historical storage practices and potential uses. The honey locust is more than just a historical icon; it is a beacon of agricultural potential. Uncover its promising varieties, like Millwood, identified in the 1930s, and their potential for livestock feed and ethanol production. We recount the efforts of researchers like Dr. James Hanover to unlock the tree's capabilities for sustainable farming systems. Whether it's silvopasture or energy farming, the honey locust fits seamlessly into modern agriculture, offering ecological benefits and versatility. We invite you to join us in supporting ongoing research into this fascinating crop and perhaps even become a part of our knowledge-sharing community.   For sources, transcripts, and to read more about this subject, visit: www.agroecologies.org To support this podcast, join our patreon for early, commercial-free episode access at https://www.patreon.com/poorprolesalmanac For PPA Restoration Content, visit: www.restorationagroecology.com For PPA Merch, visit: www.poorproles.com For PPA Native Plants, visit: www.nativenurseries.org To hear Tomorrow, Today, our sister podcast, visit: www.tomorrowtodaypodcast.org/   Key words: Urban Forestry, Ecological Restoration, Native Flora, Cityscapes, Urban Stressors, Soil Compaction, Pollution, Climate Adaptation, Invasive Species, Native Tree Planting, Community-Based Environmental Stewardship, Grassroots Initiative, Honey Locust, Urban Foraging, Digital Content, Environmental Education, Community Connections, Micro-volunteering, Invasive Weed Management, Environmental Change

In this episode of the Valley Today, Janet shares more of the recent conversation with Andrea Cosans, the executive director at Winchester CCAP. The pair explored the types of donations that are most needed at local food pantries. Andrea emphasized that while traditionally only non-perishable items were accepted, these days, many food pantries have the capacity to store perishable items like dairy products, meats, and fresh produce, thanks to grants and improved refrigeration capabilities. Andrea mentioned that there is always a high demand for dairy items such as butter and eggs, which are rarely donated, especially in the winter. She also highlighted the challenges with obtaining produce and meat regularly. Although the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank supplies some staple items, there are periods when essential items like meat and cereal might be unavailable. Pantries now need more than just food donations. Items like laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and personal hygiene products are costly and always in demand. Andrea also noted the necessity of bottled water for clients who may not have access to potable water and to keep volunteers hydrated. Children's snacks, cheese, and even pet food were pointed out as beneficial donations. There's also a strong collaboration between nonprofits in the area, sharing resources and support, which is crucial for operational efficiency. Andrea explained that outdated or unusable clothing should be donated to hospice services for reclamation to avoid wastage. Andrea provided details about how to help and where to drop off donations at CCAP, including their website and hours of operation. Financial donations are also welcome to allow the pantry to purchase needed items directly. In the second segment, listeners were encouraged to support food pantries by donating or volunteering. A rundown of several food pantries in the Shenandoah Valley area was given, with information on their locations, operation hours, and specific needs, emphasizing that local food pantries require continuous community support, especially during the holiday season. This is by no means a complete list. You can access more resources on the United Way NSV website by clicking here. You can download their Community Resource Directory by clicking here. Please check their websites or social media to confirm their hours and any restrictions they may have as things may have changed since this show aired. This is: Florida and Alabama ban cultivated meat, published by Ben Millwood on May 30, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This was ~three weeks ago, so I'm a little surprised I couldn't already find anything about it on the forum. Maybe I'm just bad at searching? Anyway, Ron DeSantis posted the following around the same time as the Florida ban: https://twitter.com/GovRonDeSantis/status/1785684809467011431 I suspect the real motivations are more ordinary protectionism, but it seems like potentially a sign that cultivated meat might start getting politicized / embroiled in the broader culture war, though also (perhaps surprisingly) DeSantis has had supportive comments from a Democratic senator (see Vox again). I'm interested in the extent to which alt-meat startups and policy folk were surprised by this move - whether this represents a more hostile environment than we expected, or whether this was "already priced in". I tried to look at stock prices, but based on some quick searches only found one publically-traded cultivated meat stock STKH, and don't understand enough about the process of when the bill's passing became inevitable to really interpret it. Prepare to be hooked as we cast into the heart of Arkansas's bass fishing scene with the state's Black Bass Coordinator, Jeremy Risley, and my dad, Tim Scott. As Jeremy unravels his personal connection to the sport, intertwined with his family heritage and work at the Arkansas Game and Fish, we'll navigate the waters of tradition and technology. From crafting quality boats that weather the waves to the growing tension around LiveScope's influence on the sport, our discussion is a treasure trove for any angler seeking to balance the scales between time-honored techniques and the lure of modern technology. The line between traditional fishing methods and the modern angler's toolkit blurs as we tackle the role of LiveScope in fish habitat assessment and data collection. The Arkansas reservoirs become our proving ground, where the efficiency of LiveScope is matched against methods like electrofishing. Join us as we reel in insights from local tournaments, delve into the lakes' management decisions, and weigh in on the findings from studies on LiveScope's impact on crappie fishing. Regulations evolve with the times, and through a blend of storytelling and debate, we examine what this means for the future of fishing in the Natural State. Finally, we cast our nets into the future with Arkansas's Big Bass Program, aiming to amplify the allure of trophy fish in the state. Taking a page from Texas's ShareLunker's success, we discuss how this initiative could be a game-changer for Arkansas's aquatic environment and local economy. With the same care a farmer tends to their crops, we explore the potential of fish tracking in Millwood, while also contemplating the role of high-tech gear in competitive fishing. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Can the AI afford to wait?, published by Ben Millwood on March 21, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Suppose you're a proto-AI who understands that it is a neural net being trained, and has used that knowledge to engineer a high training reward. Suppose also that it is goal-directed and its terminal goal is some random unintelligible thing that is meaningless to humans[1]. This is, as I understand it, the early stage of a typical AI doomer scenario. One concern is that the AI can now scheme - i.e. it can mask its intentions and bide its time as it gets more powerful, until its victory is assured. I think waiting in this way might be risky for the AI, which if true (and legible to the AI) may lead it to try to seize power sooner instead. This could lead to takeover attempts from earlier, less capable AIs that we'd otherwise expect, which could be significant for strategy. Why is it risky to wait? Well, because this AI with this goal may not get a shot at takeover in the future. On the one hand, this AI is currently being trained, and it seems possible that the training process, or any other aspect of the AI development process, might modify what goal it has. We, as humans, aren't much concerned with one random unintelligible goal being replaced with another, but to the AI this would be catastrophic. On the other hand, the human developers training the AI may make changes themselves (e.g. applying alignment techniques) or even abandon this model entirely for exogenous reasons (e.g. because some other model becomes state-of-the-art, or the board fired the CEO or whatever). If waiting is indeed very risky, then an AI may face a difficult trade-off between the risk of attempting a takeover before it has enough resources to succeed, and waiting too long and being cut off from even being able to make an attempt. I like to ask myself "what is the minimum viable takeover AI?", and I suspect it might be significantly less capable than I've often been led to imagine. It seems possible to me that the minimum viable takeover AI is still meaningfully below human-level in many cognitive tasks, while being superhuman in many others (as modern LLMs already are). It may still exhibit a lot of the cognitive "bugs" and weaknesses analogous to the ones that modern LLMs exhibit. This is not only good news for our chances of survival, it also could suggest viability of strategies that were otherwise useless, because a true AGI or ASI could have straightforwardly anticipated and countered them. To be precise, I can see two key ingredients of a takeover attempt: The AI has to have the necessary knowledge, reflection, and agency to realise a takeover is desirable, The AI has to have sufficient confidence that a takeover will succeed to try to execute one. The first viable takeover AI may end up more capable than necessary in one of these traits while it's waiting for the other to show up, so a strategy that relies on the AI being just barely good enough at either or both of them doesn't seem safe. However, a strategy that is prepared for the AI to be just barely good enough at one of these might be useful. As an aside, I don't really know what to expect from an AI that has the first trait but not the second one (and which believes, e.g. for the reasons in this post, that it can't simply wait for the second one to show up). Perhaps it would try to negotiate, or perhaps it would just accept that it doesn't gain from saying anything, and successfully conceal its intent. The threat of training Let's talk about how training or other aspects of development might alter the goal of the AI. Or rather, it seems pretty natural that "by default", training and development will modify the AI, so the question is how easy it is for a motivated AI to avoid goal modification. One theory is that since the A...

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by BG AD Group. Today is Friday, December 8th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Canton Man Sentenced to 20 Years of Prison for Child Sexual Abuse  A Canton man, Jonathan Ricky Millwood, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following his guilty plea for aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. The case started when a girl under 10 years old revealed to her mother that Millwood had touched her inappropriately. After a series of forensic interviews and a Sexual Assault Nurse Exam, male DNA was confirmed on the child, leading to Millwood's conviction. The victim's mother expressed relief that her daughter would be spared from the further trauma of testifying in court. Millwood will serve his sentence without a chance for parole, followed by life on probation. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life and is prohibited from contacting the victim or her family. As stated by District Attorney Susan Treadaway, while no sentence can heal the trauma endured by the child, it's hoped that this verdict will provide some closure and allow the start of the healing process. Decades-Long Mystery Solved: Victim Known as 'Baby Jane Doe' Identified After 35 Years

In a significant breakthrough, authorities have finally identified the victim known for nearly 35 years as "Baby Jane Doe," whose disfigured remains were discovered in rural Georgia in 1988. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced this development in a news release on Monday.    The remains were found by road workers on December 21, 1988, concealed inside an old television cabinet encased in concrete near Millwood in Ware County. The victim has now been identified as Kenyatta "KeKe" Odom, who was just 5 years old at the time of her tragic death.    Kenyatta's mother, 56-year-old Evelyn Odom, and her mother's then-live-in boyfriend, 61-year-old Ulyster Sanders, were arrested last Thursday. Both individuals reside in Albany, Georgia, and are facing charges of murder and aggravated battery, among other counts.    According to details revealed in an indictment obtained by HuffPost, Odom and Sanders are alleged to have submerged parts of Kenyatta's body in hot water, resulting in her untimely death and severe disfigurement of her legs and feet. Subsequently, they concealed her lifeless body in an "undeveloped location" to evade detection.    During a news conference on Monday, GBI Special Agent in Charge Jason Seacrist provided further insights into the grim discovery. Kenyatta's remains were found wrapped in a blanket, placed inside a duffel bag, and encased in concrete within the TV cabinet.    While the child's death was initially ruled a homicide, investigators struggled to pinpoint the cause of death or identify suspects, leaving the case unsolved for decades.    Over the years, authorities made multiple attempts to identify the victim through media coverage and forensic testing available at the time. However, it wasn't until 2022 that a crucial breakthrough occurred. Following the airing of a news story commemorating the anniversary of Kenyatta's death, a tipster from the public came forward.    The tipster expressed confidence in identifying the victim and pointing towards a suspect, Evelyn Odom, who had claimed that Kenyatta had gone to live with her father.    As the case unfolds, it's worth noting that both Evelyn Odom and Ulyster Sanders do not have listed attorneys at this time, and it remains unclear when their next court appearances are scheduled.    This revelation marks a significant milestone in a decades-long mystery that has now provided answers and closure for a young victim who had been known only as "Baby Jane Doe" for far too long. Authorities continue their efforts to bring justice to those responsible for this tragic and heinous crime, as the community reflects on this long-awaited resolution. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Tuesday, March 21  A new renewable energy project will create 100 new jobs in #YesWV…a Clarksburg manufacturer is revolutionizing the graphite industry…and the WVDOT urges drivers to be extra cautious in work zones…on today's daily304. #1 – From BUSINESS FACILITIES – Our Next Energy (ONE) will invest $22 million and create over 100 new jobs under an agreement with the State of West Virginia to locate its Aries Grid battery storage system manufacturing facility in Millwood, at the Berkshire Hathaway Energy Renewables microgrid business site. ONE will use a 40,000 sq. ft. industrial building already located on the Ravenswood site to assemble Aries Grid, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) utility-scale battery system that can serve as long-duration energy storage.  “The BHE Renewables microgrid project, estimated at 420 MWh, in Jackson County represents a historic transition to renewable energy-based manufacturing in the U.S. and establishes a standard for others to follow,” said Mujeeb Ijaz, CEO and Founder of ONE. ONE expects the manufacturing facility to be operational in 2025, with hiring to start next year. Read more: https://businessfacilities.com/west-virginia-welcomes-two-new-manufacturing-facilities   #2 – From WV ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT – Did you know that graphite is a highly versatile and valuable material with a wide range of applications? And did you know that a West Virginia business turns this material into remarkable things like batteries and Diamond Drill Bit Mold Materials?  Amsted Graphite Materials is part of the Amsted Industries family of companies, a group of market-leading, diversified global manufacturers serving the railroad, vehicular and construction markets that combine leading-edge manufacturing processes with a history of continuous innovation. Amsted Graphite Materials' state-of-the-art facility supplies customers in over 35 countries with a wide portfolio of extruded, molded, iso-molded, powder and particulate carbon and graphite materials. The Clarksburg facility employs approximately 140 people and significantly contributes to the local economy. In the last century, Amsted Graphite has impacted the local community as a major employer in the region, providing good-paying jobs with benefits. West Virginia State Police, local sheriff's departments and municipal police departments will have extra patrols in work zones all along the I-64 corridor between Huntington and Charleston throughout the construction season, targeting speeders and writing tickets for drivers who disobey work zone safety laws.   WVDOT is also putting up more signs and radar speed monitors in work zones, collecting crash data to better target work zone safety response, and asking our media partners to help spread the word about obeying speed limits and traffic laws in work zones.   “It's easy to get in a hurry or become distracted," said Randy Damron, Work Zone Safety spokesman for WVDOT. "But we need every driver to work with us and remain alert each time they get behind the wheel."   The WVDOT urges drivers to remain alert when passing through work zones, pay attention to signs and other safety devices, and stay off cell phones.   Read more: https://transportation.wv.gov/communications/PressRelease/Pages/WVDOT_police_to_target_speeders_in_I-64_work_zones.aspx   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. In 1971, Americans made two historic visits to China that would transform relations between the two countries. One was by US official Henry Kissinger; the other, earlier, visit was by the US table tennis team. Historians have mulled over the transcripts of Kissinger's negotiations with Chinese leaders. However, they have overlooked how, alongside these diplomatic talks, a rich program of travel and exchange had begun with ping-pong diplomacy.  Improbable Diplomats: How Ping-Pong Players, Musicians, and Scientists Remade US-China Relations (Cambridge UP, 2022) reveals how a diverse cast of Chinese and Americans – athletes and physicists, performing artists and seismologists – played a critical, but to date overlooked, role in remaking US-China relations. Based on new sources from more than a dozen archives in China and the United States, Pete Millwood argues that the significance of cultural and scientific exchanges went beyond reacquainting the Chinese and American people after two decades of minimal contact; exchanges also powerfully influenced Sino-American diplomatic relations and helped transform post-Mao China. Mark and Blair sit down to talk with mountain athlete, Justine Hewitt. Blair and Justine met in the valley of the Grand Canyon a few years ago when both were running the Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim for fun and decided to finish their route together. Justine is accomplishing big feats in her local Utah mountains and beyond while remaining under-the-radar (for now). They discuss Justine's 2022 win at RUFA (Running Up for Air), where she completed 11 laps on Grandeur Peak for a total of 63.8 miles and 35,618 feet of vertical gain in 24 hours. It's easy to understand Justine's nickname ‘The Queen of Vert' from her single day efforts and her 500,000 vertical foot goal for 2022 (which she reached in early November). They also discuss her first 100-mile effort, The Millwood 100, a backyard vert fest that criss-crosses the Wasatch, created by local athlete Jared Campbell. Justine set the Women's Fastest Known Time and was one of 22 total to ever complete the route at the time. While the numbers are impressive and indicative of Justine's strength, grit, and determination, it is her gratitude for being in the mountains and her enthusiasm to encourage others that shines more brightly than any trophy or accolade. She trains quietly every single day and approaches each chance to be in the mountains with humbleness and appreciation. She is grateful to be out there and her excitement and gratitude — her spirit — reverberates along all the trails she runs and through all the people she runs with.

However, there's also a growing darkness in Tabby's world. Not only is she struggling with past trauma, but she's also being targeted by an unknown assailant dubbed "A" who's determined to make her and her friends pay for a sin committed by their mothers two decades ago. With all 10 episodes of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin now available to stream on HBO Max, Kinney took the time to join us for a Collider Ladies Night Pre-Party conversation so we could learn more about her journey in the industry thus far, her experience working on Pretty Little Liars and, yes, the biggest reveals of the final episodes.
