The tavern. It's the start of 23 different campaigns that DM Tony has been in over the last three decades. It's a fantasy adventure trope and gets a lot of hate out there for being basic and unimaginative, but is that necessarily a bad thing? In this episode, Tony, Chris, and Dave return to our RPG Mythbusters series and test the myth, “Is a tavern the best place to start an adventure?” Will it be confirmed, plausible, or busted?0:49 The return of RPG Mythbusters, all the way back to Episodes 39 and 42.1:56 Everyone knows what a tavern is as opposed to, let's say, a Paladin's Chapel.3:50 Taverns are a historically accurate meeting place; the true “town square.”6:45 DM Dave returns to the Lord of the Rings novel and reminds us that Gandalf drops lore in Bilbo's house for 25 pages. Taverns can be much more organic to reveal the plot.9:50 The tavern affords an easy, stress-free environment to introduce the players and their characters to the story and the world – which can be especially helpful with new players.14:15 Session Zero could be a “tavern” by providing an intro to introduce the adventure.15:40 The type of game can change whether a tavern is a good or a bad idea; in can be a phenomenal time sink.17:20 Our tangent into 7-11 and Denny's being modern-day taverns when we were teenagers.18:10 Implied consent: the unsaid agreement between DM and players that you're ready to go on an adventure for the session.24:55 What type of adventure/campaign are you running? That should guide how and where you're starting.33:08 Lore Tolerance: how Taverns and “In Media Res” starts allow you to control the flow of lore dumps.36:45 DM Chris' idea that combat is the best way to bring characters together: A Band of Brothers. And how DM Dave leaned into this for our Dragonlance campaign.43:15 Final Thoughts: Myth Confirmed, Plausible, or Busted?

There is no eating in the archive. This is not only a practical admonition to any would-be researcher but also a methodological challenge, in that there is no eating—or, at least, no food—preserved among the printed records of the early United States. Synthesizing a range of textual artifacts with accounts (both real and imagined) of foods harvested, dishes prepared, and meals consumed, An Archive of Taste: Race and Eating in the Early United States (University of Minnesota Press, 2020) reveals how a focus on eating allows us to rethink the nature and significance of aesthetics in early America, as well as of its archive. Klein considers eating and early American aesthetics together, reframing the philosophical work of food and its meaning for the people who prepare, serve, and consume it. She tells the story of how eating emerged as an aesthetic activity over the course of the eighteenth century and how it subsequently transformed into a means of expressing both allegiance and resistance to the dominant Enlightenment worldview. Klein offers richly layered accounts of the enslaved men and women who cooked the meals of the nation's founders and, in doing so, directly affected the development of our national culture—from Thomas Jefferson's emancipation agreement with his enslaved chef to Malinda Russell's Domestic Cookbook, the first African American–authored culinary text. The first book to examine the gustatory origins of aesthetic taste in early American literature, An Archive of Taste shows how thinking about eating can help to tell new stories about the range of people who worked to establish a cultural foundation for the United States. Colin Woodard's new book Union: The Struggle to Forge the Story of United States Nationhood (Viking, 2020) tells the story of the struggle to create a national myth for the United States, one that could hold its rival regional cultures together and forge, for the first time, an American nationhood. It tells the dramatic tale of how the story of our national origins, identity, and purpose was intentionally created and fought over in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. On one hand, a small group of individuals--historians, political leaders, and novelists--fashioned and promoted a history that attempted to transcend and erase the fundamental differences and profound tensions between the nation's regional cultures. America had a God-given mission to lead humanity toward freedom, equality, and self-government and was held together by fealty to these ideals. This emerging nationalist story was immediately and powerfully contested by another set of intellectuals and firebrands who argued that the United States was instead an ethno-state, the homeland of the allegedly superior "Anglo-Saxon" race, upon whom Divine and Darwinian favor shined. Their vision helped create a new federation--the Confederacy--prompting the bloody Civil War. While defeated on the battlefield, their vision later managed to win the war of ideas, capturing the White House in the early twentieth century, and achieving the first consensus, pan-regional vision of U.S. nationhood in the years before the outbreak of the first World War. This narrower, more exclusive vision of America would be overthrown in mid-century, but it was never fully vanquished. Woodard tells the story of the genesis and epic confrontations between these visions of our nation's path and purpose through the lives of the key figures who created them, a cast of characters whose personal quirks and virtues, gifts and demons shaped the destiny of millions. Colin Woodard is a New York Times bestseller writer-historian, and journalist who has reported from more than fifty foreign countries and six continents. A longtime foreign correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor and The San Francisco Chronicle, he is a reporter at the Portland Press Herald, where he received a 2012 George Polk Award and was a finalist a 2016 Pulitzer Prize. MKE x CHI’s SleeperSound latest release, In Media Res, finds the band crawling into crates of experimental rock, noir indie folk, ambient obscurities, and eclectic imports to create a unique statement on American guitar-rock. Sleepersound started as a solo project by David D’Antonio (guitars, vocals, synths), and was chosen by him to “invoke the desire to awaken ourselves gradually and ajar from existential slumbers that make us aloof to each other and our world.” Sleepersound developed from a previous project when David was rooted in St. Louis and Chicago — the latter where David was born and raised, coming to Milwaukee by way of Chicago, then Naples, Italy, and St. Louis. Guitarist Kenny Buesing is from Sheboygan, currently in Riverwest, Milwaukee. Drummer Dan Niedziejko grew up on the south side of Milwaukee and lives just outside it, in Cudahy. Bassist Mike Campise grew up in Chicago and now resides in Milwaukee as well. In Media Res is a Latin phrase meaning, “In the middle of things.” The sequence of songs – “Give to Time,” “Passengers,” “Gravity Well,” b/w “Terminals,” “Slow Moon,” and “Error Tape” – “all focus on the journey from life into death,” Mike says. “An exploration behind the veil of existence and into the realm of our place in the larger mechanism.” “Convergence, too,” Dan adds. “Things starting while in the middle of other things but coming together to form something new and putting other things to bed.” In Media Res was made of compositions documented, produced, and performed in drummer Dan Niedziejko’s studio, Indian Not the Arrow. The icy winds from Lake Michigan seem to blow through the six chapters, the songs are augmented by the esoteric talents of producer Kramer at Noise Miami, a true collaborator with such avant-garage bands as Galaxy 500, Low, Bongwater, Daniel Johnston, Ween, and Saeta, among others. You can hear both the original Krautrock but also the basement show-equivalent from the more elegant instrumental math-rock bands inspired by them in the 90s. This week Zach is joined by Matt Latham from The Bottle Episode to discuss the twenty seventh episode of Smallville, "Redux." This episode has a unique production history as it was filmed during the first season, after "Tempest," and aired sixth in the second season. This lead to MANY continuity errors that we of course have fun pointing out. But the fun doesn't end there! Despite compelling guest stars, interesting themes, and plot set-ups for future episodes, "Redux" fails to live up to its potential and is generally considered one of Smallville's worst outings. An overcrowded story (at least FOUR simultaneous plot-lines) and one of the most ridiculous freaks of the week of the entire series will do that. Our discussion hits on the role of Pete in the series, Lana's second season self taking root, tying up old plot threads from season one while launching into new ones, and would you REALLY think Clark's ship from Smallville was a spaceship if you found it in a cornfield? Craig tells us his long history covering television dating back to the Lois & Clark days, and we go on SEVERAL tangents throughout our conversation but they're well worth it as Craig is a venerable fountain of knowledge when it comes to the series, and we had a lot of fun talking not only "Vortex" but really all things Smallville. What alternate castings would we have liked to see on the series? All this and much, much more! What do Shakespeare, Steinbeck, and Spielberg have in common? Well, aside from the obvious alliteration of their names, these men are all considered to be great storytellers. Regardless of the platform – on stage, print, or screen – they, like so many other writers, have captured the attention of audiences around the world through engaging stories. In his book The Seven Basic Plots: Why We Tell Stories, Christopher Booker asserts that nearly every story ever written can be broken down into one of seven fundamental narratives. It may seem depressing at first but that story you’ve worked so hard on has been told before and will be told again. Fret not! More information about us: http://www.WaverleyKnobs.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/branchoutpodcast https://www.facebook.com/waverleyknobs Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/waverleyknobs Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/waverleyknobs [Sample Transcription of Episode:] Alex: My name is Alex. Anna: And, I’m Anna. Alex: And, today, we’re going to be talking about elements of storytelling you should be using when making a company video. But, before we jump into the tips, we first need to make sure that you know your story. Anna: Everybody has a story including businesses and it’s more important today than ever to convey your story because I don’t know about you but I feel like my generation has grown up mistrusting a lot of corporations, a lot of businesses so it’s important to know who you are and convey that to your audience. Stories come in many forms for businesses whether you have a story behind the product you’re selling, the services you’re providing, the information you’re offering, it can span a whole variety of things; so, it’s important to know who you are and who your demographic is. So, Alex, why is video the best way to tell your story? Alex: Great question. You may be thinking there’s a million ways to tell a story. You can do an article, a blog, photographs; but, why is video best? Video appeals to the senses. You know, it’s a way of mixing the images, the sound and everything altogether to engage people. You want to grab people’s attention and you want to hold it and videos do that better than anything else. It’s also a way of drumming up emotions. You know, videos make us feel things. It’s either happy, sad, excited, scared, who knows; but, it’s a great way of, you know, making those emotions come out in people that you get better than, you know, say an article or a picture and the real key is to make sure that those emotions that people are feeling are the emotions you want them to feel in the video. Without further adieu, let’s jump into Tip #1. Anna: There are many techniques used in film and we’re going to take some inspiration from one of our recent favorites and old favorites, Star Wars! So, stories don’t have to be in chronological order. Often, starting in the middle of your story is the most engaging and then you can go into the intro and then conclusion. Event videos are one of the best ways to use this technique and it’s actually called In Media Res. Instead of showing like setting up and, you know, the whole crew putting the plates and all that stuff down to your film footage of the event itself, you’re seeing the people, the music, the energy that the event brings. It’s more engaging to actually see the event itself. [Listen to the entire episode for more and subscribe, today!]
