As broadcast October 16, 2023 for the first Monday in a while while! Tonight in our first New Muses Monday in quite some time, there were a lot of albums dropping from space and huge announcements as well. The foremost in our first hour being the second career solo album from Alabama Shakes vocalist Brittany Howard, who dropped the title track to the What Now LP, slated for release next year. First hour we had new albums to talk about from L'Rain, Helena Deland, Jamila Woods, and veteran Japanese band Lamp. Once we hit part three, the big bomb to drop is the latest LP from Bad Bunny, and we also had Pink Pantheress dropping a solo album in just a few weeks' time. Great stuff from the Korean indie and bubbling under K-pop scene as well in part 4, with ADOY heading to SXSW Sydney next month along with tunes from Summer Soul and Chamsom to check out, amongst others. It's been 37 years since he reached the apex of the sport, mining three gold medals at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. In the time since, he has etched out a highly successful broadcasting career and has been a model of unselfishness, whether providing youth clinics, through his fundraising efforts or simply promoting the sport. His given name is Ambrose Gaines. Those who have been around the deck know him by one name: Rowdy. Often referred to as “Swimming's Greatest Ambassador”, Ambrose “Rowdy” Gaines didn't start swimming until he was 17, but improved rapidly within two years to earn a swimming scholarship to Auburn University. Gaines had broke 11 world records leading up to 1980 and was favored to dominate his events at the Olympic Games Moscow 1980, but the United States boycotted the Games that year. Despite taking a year-long hiatus from swimming upon thinking his athletic career might be over, Gaines returned to the water in 1981 and made the U.S. team for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984. He won an individual gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle and anchored the gold-medal winning teams for the 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. Despite being inflicted with a life-threatening neurological disorder at the age of 31, Gaines made a comeback to his sport and was the oldest swimmer to qualify for the 1996 Olympic Trials at 35. He decided not to compete, but instead became the swimming commentator for NBC. Timestamps 0:00 - Introduction to show. 2:36 - Interview starts 6:42 - Rewinding the clock, Rowdy explains when his passion for swimming first came about. 8:18 - A 'pat on the back' at a certain stage of our life can make ALL the difference. 9:19 - Rowdy started swimming at age 17, which was (and still is) considered somewhat old. However what he accomplished in the next few years was nothing short of extraordinary. 10:42 - Mentoring and acknowledging a young athlete can be crucial to their 'stick-ability' in a sport. Rowdy explains how impactful it was for him. 13:26 - To become a champion it takes a lot more than simply 'turning yur hands over'. It takes mindset, attitude, work ethic ... Rowdy discusses how his parents guided him and made a real impact in his first few years in the sport. 16:00 - At what point did Rowdy decide that 'swimming' was what he was going to do? 19:07 - Managing your mental game is crucial for any elite athlete. The tough times are when you can learn and grow the most, Rowdy explains his least fondest memory. 20:40 - On March 21, 1980, President Jimmy Carter announced that the United States was boycotting the Summer Olympics to be held in Moscow in response to the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan on Dec. 24, 1979. Rowdy explains how athletes first heard about the boycott and how it affected him and his team mates. 23:55 - Gaines said he experienced mental-health issues after missing out on the 1980 Games and had "some real trouble post-Olympics, and ... some big struggles, especially the year after." Rowdy explains how he got himself motivated and out of the funk of disappointment of not competing in 1980. 29:34 - Rowdy's fondest moment in his career to date. (clue: there have been a few) 31:50 - Managing the stress and anxiousness of heading into the next Olympics as World record holder, World Champion. There was added pressure in the 1984 Olympic Games for Rowdy. He talks us through his experience in the lead up and even through the 100m freestyle experience at the 1984 Olympics. 36:11 - A story about the start of the race that ensured he didn't get left on the blocks. 42:11 - After his career, Rowdy had no real idea on what he would do next ... certainly not a long and respected career in sports announcing. 43:37 - is there more pressure in commentating an Olympic race, than there is in 'competing' in an Olympic race? 46:37 - Wanna know what a typical day commentating at the Olympics looks like? Rowdy has done 8 Olympics! 49:13 - Is there one race call that Rowdy feels is THE best of all time? 55:05 - The world record for the 100m free has dropped and kept dropping for 40 years. How low can it go? 59:25 - How does Michael Phelps compare to Caeleb Dressel? 1:02:57 - Who is the GOAT? 1:08:07 - What Rowdy believes is the future of swimming? 1:13:54 - Which 3 people would Rowdy invite to dinner? 1:17:14 - What's one piece of advice you'd give to someone to help them optimize their life? 1:19:20 - What's next for Rowdy Gaines? 01:21:30 - Interview ends.

Today’s story unfolds at the intersection of art, sports, and activism. In 1968, Black American athlete Tommie Smith set a new world record. He became a gold medalist when he raced to win the 200-meter event at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Yet Tommie Smith was only inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2019. Why did it take half a century for the international sports organization to recognize his record-breaking performance? Because in 1968, at the height of the civil rights struggle in America, Tommie Smith took a stand on racism and human rights at the awards ceremony in Mexico City. As he stood on the podium to accept his medal, he bowed his head and raised his fist in a silent salute. That year, the Olympics were broadcast on television live and in color for the first time ever. The whole world witnessed his gesture. Tommie Smith’s respectful protest marked his life in the years that followed, while motivating generations to stand up for equality. He continues to inspire us, encouraging everyone to take part in the ongoing quest for global human rights and racial justice. In this episode, you’ll hear from the athlete and two creatives he inspired: Japanese-American artist Glenn Kaino and Iranian-born cinematographer Afshin Shahidi. They came together to create an exhibition, public programs and a documentary film to tell Tommie Smith’s story. When artist Glenn Kaino sought out the legendary Olympic runner as a creative collaborator, he recognized the enduring value of art as a means to preserve a noble act. With Drawn Arms amplifies Smith’s courage, bringing history to reckon with our contemporary moment. We have reckoned with isolation and the loss of friends and loved ones, and with the strange new normal of everyday life. The public health crisis has meant the delay or cancellation of cherished cultural and sports events. The 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and the Japan 2020 Summer Olympics, where the film With Drawn Arms was to be screened, were among thousands of casualties. In 2020, racial equity became a flashpoint on two fronts. The virus has been taking a greater toll on Blacks and people of color. Police violence against Blacks sparked a resurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement, triggering massive protests across the U.S. and abroad. The quest for racial equity and human rights continues.

Apolo Anton Ohno has a remarkable track record as an athlete, becoming the most decorated American Olympian at the Winter Olympics and inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Post-sport career (& post "Dancing With the Stars" fame, as we're sure some are aware), Apolo continues to blaze new paths for himself and dedicates much of his time empowering others to reach their own goals. In this podcast interview, Apolo firmly states that he was at a factual, physiological disadvantage during his short track speed skating competitions when compared to his competitors. So, how did Apolo come out so frequently on top? What was he doing differently? How did he win 8 Olympic medals? As much as he was training his body for peak physical performance, he was also training his mind...if not even harder than his body. Pushing his mental game to the absolute limit, sharpening it, and continuously channeling it (all the way from training to race day) was his secret weapon. His mind was the key to success. The mental resilience and competitive edge he built up during his athletic career were never lost. Apolo, with unwavering discipline, continually adapts that performance mindset to support ongoing personal and professional growth. From following a cyclical keto diet to intermittent fasting, Apolo stays on top of both his mental and physical game. Shannon Miller knows what it's like to face uncontrollable factors that sideline even the greatest of champions. A seven time Olympic medalist, she is a member of eight Halls of Fame, and she's the only female athlete to have ever been inducted to the Olympic Hall of Fame - Twice! Her tally of five gold medals at the Barcelona Olympic Games was the most medals won by a U. S. Athlete in any sport at that games. And as far as Olympic medals go, she is the most decorated Olympic gymnast, male or female, in U. S. History. Shannon and I spoke about the mindset that she developed on her way to becoming an Olympic champion, and that she later turned to and relied on while navigating life's challenges off the mat - in the form of injury, early retirement and later, a life threatening cancer diagnosis. Shannon's goal is to bring inspiration to those who are struggling, as well as those who could improve their lives through a gold medal mindset.
