fWotD Episode 2951: David Evans (RAAF officer) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles.The featured article for Tuesday, 3 June 2025, is David Evans (RAAF officer).Air Marshal Selwyn David Evans (3 June 1925 – 2 September 2020) was a senior commander of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), and a writer and consultant on defence matters. He served as Chief of the Air Staff from 1982 to 1985. After leaving the RAAF, he published two military treatises, A Fatal Rivalry: Australia's Defence at Risk and War: A Matter of Principles, as well as an autobiography.Enlisting in the Air Force in 1943, Evans graduated from flying school as a sergeant pilot, and was converting to Beaufort bombers when World War II ended. He gained his commission as a pilot officer in 1947. From 1948 to 1949, he was a member of the Australian contingent operating C-47 Dakota transports in the Berlin Airlift. He was a flying instructor in the early 1950s, before becoming a VIP captain with the Governor-General's Flight in 1954. His service in the flight earned him the Air Force Cross in 1957. In the 1960s Evans was twice posted to No. 2 Squadron, flying Canberra jet bombers, first as a flight commander when the unit was based in Malaysia from 1960 to 1962, then as its commanding officer during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968. The Canberras achieved a high degree of accuracy on their bombing missions under his leadership, and he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order after completing his tour in Vietnam.Evans held senior staff positions in the early 1970s before serving as Officer Commanding RAAF Base Amberley from 1975 to 1977. Promoted to air vice-marshal, he then became Chief of Air Force Operations. In this role, he worked to improve the RAAF's strategy for the defence of Australia, to fully exploit the "air–sea gap" on the northern approaches to the continent. Appointed Officer of the Order of Australia in 1981, he was Chief of Joint Operations and Plans in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) before his promotion to air marshal and Chief of the Air Staff in April 1982. As head of the Air Force, he focussed on morale, air power doctrine, and improving defensive capabilities in northern Australia. He was raised to Companion of the Order of Australia in 1984. Retiring from the RAAF in May 1985, Evans began to write and lecture on defence matters, and also stood for election in federal politics. He was a board member of and defence advisor to British Aerospace Australia from 1990 to 2009, and chairman of the National Capital Authority from 1997 to 2003. Sir Gerard Brennan has been one of Australia's most important barristers and judges since World War II. As a judge, he made many significant contributions to Australian jurisprudence. The most consequential of these was the leading judgment in the High Court's decision in Mabo recognising the rights of occupation of Australia's indigenous peoples. A few short years later in the Wik case, Brennan CJ dissented from the Court's decision that native title had not been extinguished by grants of pastoral leases under Colonial and State legislation. The key to understanding the fundamental consistency of these two judgments lies in an appreciation of Brennan's fidelity to the constraints upon judicial decision making required by the constitutional separation of legislative and judicial power.About the speakerThe Honourable Patrick Keane AC KC is a graduate of the University of Queensland and Oxford University where he was awarded numerous academic prizes and accolades. He was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1977, appointed Queen's Counsel in 1988 and was Solicitor-General for Queensland from 1992 to 2005. In 2003 His Honour was awarded the Centenary Medal in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland Court of Appeal in 2005. The Hon Keane was appointed as the third Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia in 2010, and served thereafter as a justice of the High Court of Australia from 2013 until retirement in 2022. Brian Griffin was born in Birmingham in 1948 and grew up in the neighbouring Black Country, in the English midlands. He started his working life at 16 working in a factory, where he remained for 5 years, before finally making his escape to Manchester Polytechnic where he took a degree in photography, shortly after which he left for London in pursuit of a photographic career as a fashion photographer. It was there that he met and was mentored by Roland Schenk, the charismatic art director on Management Today magazine, who offered him a job as a corporate photographer. The rest, as they say, is history. Brian was later considered 'the photographer of the decade' by the Guardian Newspaper in 1989; 'the most unpredictable and influential British portrait photographer of the last decades' by the British Journal of Photography in 2005 and 'one of Britain's most influential photographers' by the World Photography Organisation in 2015. In 1991, his book Work was awarded the ‘Best Photography Book in the World' prize at Barcelona Primavera Fotografica. Brian is patron of the Format Photography Festival in Derby; in September 2013, he received the ‘Centenary Medal' from the Royal Photographic Society in recognition of a lifetime achievement in photography; and in 2014 he received an Honorary Doctorate from Birmingham City University. Brian Griffin's photographs are held in the permanent collections of many major art institutions and he has published twenty or so books, including his latest, Pop which features some of the highlights of his album artwork and band photography from decades working in the music industry with such artists as Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode and Kate Bush. In 1991, the honourable Margaret McMurdo was the first woman to be appointed a judge of the District Court of Queensland and the Childrens Court of Queensland. Justice McMurdo was appointed President of the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Queensland in 1998. Her Honour was the second president and first woman appointed as a presiding judge of an appellate court in Australia. In 2001 Justice McMurdo was awarded the Centenary Medal and later appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (2007) for service to the law and judicial administration in Queensland, particularly in the areas of legal education and women's issues. In 2006 her Honour was presented the Agnes McWhinney Award for outstanding professional contribution by a woman lawyer. Her Honour retired as President of the Court of Appeal on 26 March 2017. On 5 May 2017 Justice McMurdo was appointed Chair of the Legal Aid Board of Queensland. Moira Lanzarin is a fourth-generation grazier from the Northern Territory. Moira's story starts in the basalt country of North Queensland where her deep love and understanding of country and cattle was ignited. A move to the Territory in the early 90s with her parents Mike and Clair O'Brien and her three siblings meant building a stud business together in a completely different landscape, but with modern ideas to land management. Moira manages the family company's stud and beef operations in the Northern Territory and has been instrumental in introducing Holistic Management to the NT. Her contributions to Regional Australia have been recognized by receiving the Centenary Medal for Services to Regional Australia (2003); NT Young Cattleman (2011); being named NT Rural Woman of the Year (Runner up 2009); and NT Young Australian of the Year (1998).

In this role, Lynn is responsible for overseeing South Australia's largest non-government agency promoting ‘justice, respect, and fullness of life for all. Anglicare SA has over 1500 staff and 1000 volunteers with an annual budget of approximately $100 million and works in the areas of aged care, families, vulnerable people and communities, housing, and economic participation. Now an ordained Priest in the Anglican Church, Dr. Arnold ministers out of St Peter's Cathedral, with a special focus on ministry to the city of Adelaide and on encouraging dialogue on public issues from Christian perspectives.Lynn is the National Co-Chair for Anti-Poverty Week, a member of Anglicare Australia Council, Chair Trustees, Don Dunstan Foundation and one of three South Australian Reconciliation Ambassadors. Under his leadership, World Vision Australia increased revenues by 126 percent and reduced operating cost ratios by fifty percent. Mr Parekh has over 33 years' experience in providing advice to mining companies and service providers to the mining industry. Jon Muir OAM a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to mountaineering, a Centenary Medal and the Australian Geographic Society's Adventurer of the year. He started climbing full-time as a teenager and since then, he has gained ground-breaking solo records in climbing the south side of Mount Everest and navigating the Kedarnarth Peaks as well as walking to the South and North Poles without huskies or mechanical vehicles. In 2000 Jon paddled a kayak for 52 days along the east coast of Cape York Peninsula, living off the natural environment. In Jon's fourth attempt in 2001, he and his dog Seraphine began a journey from Port Augusta in South Australia to Burketown on the Queensland North Coast, dragging a cart, taking 128 days on foot and covering 2500 kilometres, reaching Burketown. Jon is also the first person to complete a solo and unsupported walk across the Australian continent. In addition to achieving all this and more Jon and his wife Suzan are living in the forest surrounded by the Grampians National Park and living a sustainable life. We've tried to capture his enormous life in this episode, which we know you'll enjoy.

He was also Professor of Mining Geology at The University of Adelaide (2006-2012).] Prof Plimer has published more than 120 scientific papers on geology and was one of three of editors for the five-volume Encyclopedia of Geology. With his most recent publication of the book “Green Murder” he has now published eleven books written for the general public. He frequently publishes newspaper and magazine opinion pieces as well as academic book chapters. His latest book has been a labour of love and hate unfunded by third parties. It is important to note that he has never been funded or employed by the fossil fuel or uranium industries. The recipient of numerous awards and multiple accolades Professor Plimer has been an outspoken critic of both creationism and the supposed scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change. He won the Leopold von Buch Plakette (German Geological Society), the Clarke Medal (Royal Society of NSW), the Sir Willis Connolly Medal (Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy). He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and an Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of London. In 1995, he was Australian Humanist of the Year and later was awarded the Centenary Medal. He was Managing Editor of Mineralium Deposita, president of the SGA, president of IAGOD, president of the Australian Geoscience Council and sat on the Earth Sciences Committee of the Australian Research Council for many years. He won the Eureka Prize for the promotion of science, the Eureka Prize for A Short History of Planet Earth and the Michael Daley Prize (now a Eureka Prize) for science broadcasting. He was an advisor to governments and corporations and was a regular broadcaster. It is also important to note that Professor Plimer spent much of his life in the rough and tumble of the zinc-lead-silver mining town of Broken Hill where an interdisciplinary scientific knowledge base intertwined with a healthy dose of scepticism and pragmatism are necessary for survival. He worked for North Broken Hill Ltd, was a consultant to many major mining companies and has been a director of numerous exploration public companies listed in London, Toronto and Sydney. Ep. 65 Marilyn Darling ACMarilyn Darling AC, is best known as an Australian philanthropist and patron of the arts. With her husband, Gordon Darling, she instigated and has provided ongoing funding to the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, ACT. She instigated it! We didn't have one before that! She was one of the very few women who studied science at the University of Queensland in the early 60's before working in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Melbourne in the mid-1960s and undertaking postgraduate study in the Medical School of Monash University from 1973 to 1978. She worked successfully as a scientist, but it was her work for not for profit and charitable organisations over the ensuing 40+ years for which she became best known. So much so that she was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001 "for service to Australian society through the arts". She was the first woman to be appointed as a judge of the District Court in Queensland, the first woman in Australia appointed to lead an appellate court (appointed as president of the Queensland Court of Appeal) and all this as she and her husband raised four children. They had to rewrite the rules for her. They weren't contemplating a female judge so legislation had to be quickly amended. In the 90's. She co-founded the Women Lawyer's Association amongst others, and she is patron of Women's Legal Service, Caxton Legal Service and LawRight's Civil Justice Fund. In 2017, she was appointed chair of the Board of Governors of Queensland Community Foundation, the state's largest public perpetual charitable trust. She's chair of the board of Legal Aid Qld as well as having Chaired the Victorian Royal Commission into the Management of Police Informers...otherwise known as the Lawyer X Royal Commission and since March 2021 has been chairing Queensland's Women's Safety and Justice Taskforce. And we can only hope that the Qld Attorney General and Premier will adopt all of OM's (Our Margaret's) recommendations.She was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003 and in 2007 was made a Companion of the Order of Australia. Albert Watson OBE (born 1942) is a Scottish fashion, celebrity, and art photographer. He has shot over 100 covers of Vogue and 40 covers of Rolling Stone magazine since the mid-1970s and has created major advertising campaigns for clients such as Prada, Chanel, and Levis. Watson has also taken some well-known photographs, from the portrait of Steve Jobs that appeared on the cover of his biography, a photo of Alfred Hitchcock holding a plucked goose, and a portrait of a nude Kate Moss taken on her 19th birthday. Watson's prints of his photography are exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. Photo District News named him one of the 20 most influential photographers of all time, along with Richard Avedon and Irving Penn, among others. Watson has won numerous honors, including a Lucie Award, a Grammy Award, the Hasselblad Masters Award, and three ANDY Awards. About Petrea More than 125,000 people have attended residential programs or counselling with Petrea and her team since 1985. Petrea has been a regular guest on ABC Radio Sydney for almost 20 years – on Richard Glover's Mid-Week Conference and Nightlife. In 2003 she was celebrated on Channel 9's This Is Your Life and has been featured on Australian Story, Compass and many other television productions. An acclaimed documentary was jointly commissioned by Channel 4 (UK) and the ABC called Quest for Life – A Year in the Life of Petrea King in 1990. BIG IDEA 1 “Shared experiences create deep and everlasting bonds” (19:26) Whilst many deep and everlasting friendships are created at the residential programs, the Quest for Life Foundation also uses Facebook to interact and connect with members of their community. This involves regular posts and live events that allow people to be involved and grow within the community. The use of Facebook allows for members to tune in to live mini workshops with the facilitators or the weekly meditation group with Petrea. BIG IDEA 2 “Technology impacts human connection in a positive way” (24:10) Quest are always looking for new ways to interact with their community, even if it is to have a little chat every now and again or to be there a critical moment in someone's life. Through the use of technology, past participants and those who can't attend programs, can keep engaged, build and maintain a strong relationship with each other and the origanisation. BIG IDEA 3 “What matters is your intention, be very clear about what your intention is and then show up” (33:47) Petrea says when building a community on social media, it is essential to be clear your intentions and if you make a commitment, follow through. You need to have good vibration. If you pour yourself into that, you're pouring yourself into that energy field and it will begin to resonate for those that need it. Another key piece of advice Petrea gives is to establish good time management. Make sure you divide your time well, turn up 100% and give it your focus and attention rather than being half-hearted about anything. Dr Allan Hawke AC, FAICD, FIML, FIPAA is a great great grandson of Joseph Blundell and “Susan Osborne” through the 10th of their 11 children - Rosanna Meech (née Blundell). He was Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Paul Keating in 1993-1994; Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs from 1994-1996; Secretary of Transport and Regional Services from 1996-1999 and Secretary of Defence from 1999-2002. His final posting was High Commissioner to New Zealand after which he “retired” to become The Australian National University’s 10th Chancellor on 28 February 2006 - the only graduate of his alma mater to hold that prestigious position. In 2003, he was a Centenary Medal recipient - only the third specific Australian Commemorative award. Created to mark Australia’s 100 years of Federation, it was bestowed on people considered to have contributed to Australian society or government and laid solid foundations for the nation’s future. Dr Hawke received Australia’s highest civilian honour when appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday List for eminent service to public administration, particularly through the formulation and implementation of policy in the areas of defence, transport and education, and strengthening bilateral relations with New Zealand. Allan is one of 25 eminent Australians on the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia Leadership Council. His other current appointments include Chairman of the Canberra Raiders and Chairman of the Canberra University Campus Development Joint Venture. He is Patron of Respite Care Queanbeyan and until recently was ACT Cricket Patron, Chairman of Trusted Systems and Solutions, President of ACT Barnardos and until February this year was a Non-Executive Director of the Lockheed Martin Australia Board. He made his debut as captain of the Wallabies in a two-Test series against Argentina in 1986 Simon was awarded an OAM in 1988, The Australian Sports Medal in 2000, The Centenary Medal in 2003 and was awarded the Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia on Australia Day 2018. He was inducted into the Sport’s Australia Hall Of Fame in 1991 and the Australian Rugby Hall Of Fame in 2014. Simon is the President of Total Brain in Australia and New Zealand. Scott “ Razor” Robertson (AKA Razor), has been a professional Rugby player from 1996 to 2007. As a player he won 6 championships with Canterbury and Crusaders in New Zealand. Razor has 8 championships as a head coach, including New Zealand under 21s World Cup Championship in 2014, and 3 consecutive Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders in 2017, 2018 and 2019 followed by a “Covid Competition” win in 2020. Mary Foley is the Managing Director of Telstra Health. Telstra Health is one of the largest Australian owned health technology companies, and is a subsidiary of Telstra Corporation, which is Australia's largest telecommunications company. Prior to joining Telstra Health, Mary was Director General and Secretary of NSW Health for a five-year term. She has also previously held roles as National Health Practice Leader for PwC Australia, Chief Executive of St Vincent's and Mater Health Sydney, and a senior executive of a major listed Australian healthcare company. Mary was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for her contribution to public administration in health and education in 2016. She's received the Centenary Medal from the Federal Government for her business leadership in the private sector, and she is a former Telstra NSW Business Woman of the Year. In this interview, Mary reflects on her distinguished career in healthcare, and how she became Managing Director of Telstra Health. Nick Farr-Jones was captain of the Wallabies that won the Rugby Union World Cup in 1991, the Bledisloe Cup in 1992 and defeated the Springboks in 1992. He was capped 63 times for Australia, including 36 as captain. Nick completed a Law degree at the University of Sydney before practicing law while pursuing his amateur rugby career. In 1992, he became a Member of the Order of Australia, in 1999 was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame and in 2001 was awarded a Centenary Medal for service to Australian society through Rugby Union. After hanging up his boots, Nick has worked in investment banking and funds management for Societe Generale and Taurus Funds Management, respectively.
Liz Mullinar has authored three books “Breaking The Silence”, “The Liz Mullinar Story” and most recently, “Heal For Life” a guidebook detailing her knowledge from over 20 years of supporting survivors of childhood trauma to heal. She was awarded an order of Australia in 1997, A Centenary Medal in 2000 and honoured on “This is Your Life” in 2001. She was awarded the first Humanitarian Award in 2003 and in 2009 she was named NSW Volunteer of the Year. In 2010 Liz was a NSW finalist for the Australian of the Year – Local Hero. Driving to Philip Wolfhagen's home outside Launceston, Tasmania, was a dreamlike experience. Unlike the dry landscape of drought-affected NSW (we recorded before the onset of the bushfire crisis), there were green farmlands rolling down to a plain with hills in the distance. If it had been dusk I would have felt I was driving through a Wolfhagen painting because capturing the landscape surrounding his property is a large part of Philip's practice. In particular he beautifully captures that moment of twilight, often with a hint of melancholy, through his expert use of colour and superb application of paint. However, there is more to Philip Wolfhagen than painting. His interests span from music to gardening and building and these other pursuits feed into his work. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation where we talked about those subjects as well as many others, especially his use of colour. He is one of Australia's most acclaimed and respected contemporary landscape artists. He has exhibited in over 40 solo shows, has won the Wynne prize and the Lloyd Rees art prize amongst other awards, was highly commended in last year’s Hadley’s art prize and has been awarded the Centenary Medal for contribution made to the Arts. A major survey of his work travelled the country in 2013-14 and his paintings are held in nearly every major state and national public art institution in Australia as well as many private and corporate collections both in Australia and internationally. Here are once again with the fabulous Nerds for the weekly episode of hijinks and merriment. This week we look at topics that will hopefully entertain you, perhaps educate you, perchance even make you laugh. As usual we have our three Nerds, idiots, nutjobs, wackjobs, funny farm contenders, or as we like to say, your hosts. Bucky, Professor and the DJ. Bucky is our slightly older, kind of grumpy Nerd, who dislikes Mumble rappers, reality TV and generally stupidity. Professor our younger Nerd who likes gaming, long walks to the camp fire, and his Switch when on the bus. Last but not least, we have the DJ, the resident Droid that no one is looking for, who likes anime, games and laughing. First topic up this week is about some new illustrated novels, or omics, from the Firefly franchise. The DJ is challenged to finally watch the series to help him discover his inner Browncoat, will he be brave enough to walk down the street in a hat like that and show he aint afraid of nothing? We will find out, but by my pretty blue bonnet if he doesn’t we will aim to misbehave and cause mischief. Next up we look at the stress and traumatic conditions developers are suffering through to bring us new games. With reports of people developing PTSD, and hiding this fact so they can get jobs. This is seriously messed up, what these people are going through is downright wrong and needs to be looked at. Also Buck has a rant about the need to look after each other because he is sick and tired of morons putting profit before people. Last up Buck brings us an article about Rainbows. No, he hasn’t become a hippie or something drastic. He just felt we needed to take a moment and look around us and admire the simple things, you know, kind of like smell the roses and noticed the politicians as people (we think they are, but don’t hold us to that – Ed.). So we have 20 facts about rainbows and one of which is that the Greeks thought there were only three colours in the rainbow. We follow this with the usual look at the games we have been playing this week and give you a run down on them. Concluding with the episode with the regular Shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and events for the week that we all love. Feminist, social activist, public servant and journalist, Marie Coleman was the first woman to head an Australian national statutory authority, the National Social Welfare Commission. She has spent over 60 years campaigning against the gender pay gap and other social injustices. A founder of the National Foundation for Australian Women she was instrumental in establishing the Australian Women’s Archives Project and lobbied for the Commonwealth paid parental leave legislation. Marie has been awarded the Order of Australia, the Public Service Medal, the Centenary Medal of the Public Service Institute, and an Edna Ryan award in government. She was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women and chosen as 2011 ACT Senior Australian of the Year.
Ann Sherry is a change maker who’s notched up so many extraordinary achievements during her decades long and inspiring career to date that it’s hard to know where to start. Suffice to say Australian women have a lot to thank her for as one of the many things she’s responsible for is introducing paid maternity leave to corporate Australia. She also transformed the cruise industry in Australia as CEO of Carnival Australia, notching up double digit growth every year despite having to deal with significant challenges. Today Ann sits on multiple boards including Carnival Australia where she is Chairman, she is also Chair of UNICEF Australia, and a Non Executive Director (NED) with one of the country’s biggest banks, National Australia Bank (NAB), as well as Sydney Airport, Rugby Australia, the Museum of Contemporary Arts Australia and Palladium. Ann has many accolades for her extremely varied career to date including a Centenary Medal, an Order of Australia and the overall winner of the Women of Influence award in 2015. Brian Griffin has published over thirty books and was awarded the Best Photography book in the World at the Barcelona Primavera Fotografica 1991. Life magazine used his photograph A Broken Frame on the front cover of its supplement The Greatest Photographs Of The 80's. In 1991, after twenty years, he “walked away from photography” and began a career creating advertising commercials and music videos. He returned to photography in 2002 and has had more than fifteen solo shows and four retrospectives since. Brian has won many awards including four ‘Most Outstanding Awards' from the D&AD (Design and Art Direction), and the ‘Freedom of the City of Arles, France'. He won the ‘Best Commercial of the Year' at the Bafta Academy awards in 1992 and his short movie Claustrofoamia received the ‘Golden Monkey Award' for Best Film at the Mons International Short Film Festival in Belgium and the ‘Certificate of Merit' at the Chicago International Film Festival, both in 1995. In September 2013, Brian received the ‘Centenary Medal' from the Royal Photographic Society in recognition of a lifetime achievement in photography. In 2014, he received an Honorary Doctorate by Birmingham City University for his lifetime contribution to the City of Birmingham. Brian Griffin was born in Birmingham in 1948 and grew up in the neighbouring Black Country, in the English midlands. He started his working life at 16 working in a factory, where he remained for 5 years, before finally making his escape to Manchester Polytechnic where he took a degree in photography, shortly after which he left for London in pursuit of a photographic career as a fashion photographer. It was there that he met and was mentored by Roland Schenk, the charismatic art director on Management Today magazine, who offered him a job as a corporate photographer. The rest, as they say, is history. Brian was later considered 'the photographer of the decade' by the Guardian Newspaper in 1989; 'the most unpredictable and influential British portrait photographer of the last decades' by the British Journal of Photography in 2005 and 'one of Britain’s most influential photographers' by the World Photography Organisation in 2015. In 1991, his book Work was awarded the ‘Best Photography Book in the World’ prize at Barcelona Primavera Fotografica. Brian is patron of the Format Photography Festival in Derby; in September 2013, he received the ‘Centenary Medal’ from the Royal Photographic Society in recognition of a lifetime achievement in photography; and in 2014 he received an Honorary Doctorate from Birmingham City University. Marc has been presented with a Centenary Medal for Outstanding Contribution as a dancer and choreographer and in 2014 Marc was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Performance (Individual) at the prestigious Isadora Duncan Awards for his solo piece Remember When. Neil Cole has a long and storied career history. After founding the Flemington Legal Service and working to support the local community for seven years, he then ran for, and won, the seat of Melbourne in federal parliament. In 1993, Neil received a formal diagnosis of bipolar disorder, which was leaked to the public by his political enemies, forcing him to resign his position and be open about his lived experiences. Since leaving federal politics, Neil Cole has continued his advocacy through work with the Monash medical school, Melbourne University's Florey Institute of Neuroscience and by serving as a member on the national advisory committee of mental health. Neil also shares his story creativly, having penned 25 plays and one novel, he has been awarded the Griffin Award for New Australian Playwriting and the Centenary Medal for service to Australian society and literature.
By openly sharing his life experiences, Jack Heath gives other people permission to be themselves. He has a passion for removing stigmas and reminds us that by coming back to stillness we can calm our minds and reconnect us to our basic human goodness. For Sarrinah, the hijab represents a world from which she has escaped; for her niece, Shafana, it is a personal statement of renewed faith.--Alana Valentine is one of Australia’s most renowned and respected playwrights. Her work for the stage includes Grounded, Cyberbile, Run Rabbit Run, Parramatta Girls, Eyes to the Floor, Watermark, Swimming the Globe, The Conjurers, Comin’ Home Soon, Dead Man Brake, Singing the Lonely Heart and Savage Grace.Her writing has been awarded many times, including the Queensland and NSW Premier’s Awards, five AWGIE awards, including the inaugural David Williamson Prize and the Major AWGIE in 2013, the Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award, a residency at the Banff Playwrights Conference in Canada, the ANPC/New Dramatists Award, a Churchilll Fellowship, a Centenary Medal and an International Writing Fellowship at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. In 2012 she won the prestigious STAGE Award—judged by Pulitzer Prize winning playwrights and Nobel Laureates—for her play Ear to the Edge of Time.
