Crédits : Guille Faingold via Stocksy See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Our guest on this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast is Sam Hurd. While he is primarily a wedding photographer, I have no doubt that he could photograph anything and make it look interesting. Hurd is also a portrait photographer; he dabbles in landscape work; and is a passionate photo educator. A few minutes listening to this episode and it becomes clear that he can articulate his process as well as he can execute it. He offers “deconstructions” of his images for his Patreon followers and teaches his style, technique, and gear, but today we focus on his “side hustles,” on the methods and platforms he uses to engage with clients and make extra money from the wedding photography he is already doing. We start by discussing his Patreon platform and how he uses his wedding-photography images and insights to build a following of “patrons,” who pay monthly subscriptions to follow his tutorials. We then jump to Stocksy, and how his well-curated set of stock images, mostly taken at weddings, creates an additional revenue flow. He also speaks of DVLOP, which is a site that markets presets that he has created while processing his wedding work. Of course, each of these ancillary platforms flows into and out of each other not only to gain him clients but to improve his photography. He mentions several times how the challenge of producing interesting tutorials has forced him to be more inventive. Despite a very simple kit when shooting weddings, Hurd is also a self-described gearhead and he and Allan bond over their love for vintage glass and discuss recent purchases, including the Hasselblad 907X 50c and the Canon R6. Finally, we touch on Hurd’s first professional gig, as the staff photographer for the National Press Club, some of the famous faces he photographed, and the odd but practical practice techniques he developed to practice his portraiture. Join us for this very informative episode. Guest: Sam Hurd Photograph © Sam Hurd

The Friday Habit
7 Ways to Improve Your Website

The Friday Habit

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2020 20:28

On this episode of The Friday Habit, Ben and Mark shine some light on the ethereal subject that is website improvements as only two people who are experienced in branding and creative website creation could do. In fact, they outline 7 ways to improve your website that will not only provide you with a clearer and more effective website but also with greater clarity on your brand as a whole. Make your text bite-sized – You shouldn't have any big paragraphs that cause the reader to audibly grunt when they see what they are expected to read. Within 5 seconds, the reader should be able to answer basic questions about your company such as who, what, and how. Capture email addresses – Use a lead magnet like a free e-book or other exclusive content to get people's email addresses but avoid the intrusive pop-up technique. Use real photographs – Put actual photos of your team members on the website rather than relying on the stale stock images that everyone is tired of seeing. Stocksy and Unsplash are great resources for less common stock images as well. Make your customer the hero – The customer really only cares about what your company can do for them, so craft your messaging to answer their questions rather than boring them with a play-by-play of your career up to this point. Add clear calls to action – Let your customers know what they can expect to happen next in their process with you. Don't just have them click a button to “learn more”, but rather “schedule a call” or “request a demo”. Test it on potential customers – Watch someone interact with your site, either in person or by using a service like Hotjar. Make updates often – Knapsack Creative recommends that you update your website weekly or monthly to keep clients coming back to see what is new. Your action item after this episode is to review your website and implement some or all of these changes, then show your site to someone and ask for feedback.Links:“The Smart Agency” podcast: https://jasonswenk.com/smart-agency-master-class/ Stocksy: https://www.stocksy.com/Unsplash: https://unsplash.com/ Hotjar: https://www.hotjar.com/ Connect with us:https://www.thefridayhabit.com/thefridayhabit@knapsackcreative.com https://www.instagram.com/benjaminmanleyhttp://www.benjaminmanley.com/https://www.brandvivamedia.com/https://www.facebook.com/Marklab2https://www.linkedin.com/in/marklab2/

Nuggets of Wisdom‍1. Share More Work on Social MediaIn order for you to be discovered by anyone—whether its with client work or personal work—you have to be posting work on social media. Don't hold back either, post regularly between 1-2 times a day and spread out your posts on different platforms. That way people don't get annoyed if they are following you in multiple places.‍2. Create for YourselfRemember that our main purpose for creatives is to create—that doesn't mean just creating for clients—take some time out for yourself each day or at the very least on the weekends and create for your selves. You never know what you might find when you do or what opportunities will come of it!‍3. Passion is KeyNo matter what you may tell your client, you are going to be more passionate about the projects you create for yourselves instead of the ones you're creating for money and guess what? That is perfectly fine.‍Show NotesThe image used in today's header was sources from Stocksy by Audrey Shtecinjo.Follow the Design Break podcast: Instagram | Twitter | FacebookFollow Host Rocky Roark: Website | Instagram | Twitter | FacebookPodcast Music by: Royalty Free Rock via Pond5‍Please remember to subscribe to the Design Break Podcast where ever you listen and if you have a moment, leave a rating and review. Giants, this is episode #73! Today we have the CEO of BridgeClimb Sydney, which is the #1 ranked experience in Australia. To date, over 4 million people from more than 140 countries have climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge since 1998, including Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Jackman and Jamie Oliver. Previously, our guest was the CEO of Scenic World Blue Mountains where he served a 10-year tenure.   His formal studies include a Bachelor's degree in Business, Management and Marketing – plus a Master’s in Information and Communication Sciences – both at Ball State University, Indiana. He is a man of many layers, including being a servant leader that specialises in creating world-class cultures and building exceptional iconic experiences. He believes the heart of all business is people and that his role is to create a space where people can be the best version of themselves. One of the things that really got me was when he said that “in order to truly know and lead a person you have to know their pain”. Personally, the conversation we had reminded me that – excelling in our careers and reaching ambitious goals, takes a tonne of inner-work – and requires showing up with an open heart and open mind when working with others. Some of the topics we spoke about include: The most unexpected thing that’s happened on the bridge during a climb Setting up people in your company to be the best version of themselves What ‘building exceptional iconic experiences’ means to him What servant leadership is, and what we can learn from it.   So if you’d like to improve your leadership skills, or hear answers to some of the bigger questions, then this is for you – as we uncover what makes an empathic, courageous leader. Something a little different this week...We chat with two of the co-founders of Stocksy United (www.stocksy.com) the image and video stock agency.  Sam chats with Brianna Wettlaufer (CEO) and Nuno Silva (VP of Product) about the stock image/video industry, how it's changed over the years and some of the specifics behind their co-operative based stock agency - Stocksy United. This is hopefully a fascinating peek behind the curtain with two insiders of this business who discuss how trends and markets have changed, and what direction the stock business may be heading to in the future. If you've ever sold images or video through a stock agency, or have even considered getting into that business then this is an essential episode to listen to! Also this week Paul & Sam chat about the new Fuji GFX-50S, Paul has been hands on with one for the last few days testing it in all outdoor conditions. We also mention 'The Photography Show' which is coming up between March 18th-21st 2017 at the NEC and we look forward to bumping into some of you there. Thanks as ever to our great supporters Wex Photographic (www.wexphotographic.com). Make sure they're your first stop for any camera, video, lighting etc equipment with great prices and fast delivery. We'll be back in two weeks time when Paul catches up with Denis & Freda Hocking and chats about their husband and wife photographic journey and their stunning new book. Thanks for listening!
