Erika Cheung arrived at the Theranos corporate headquarters at just 22 years old as a newly minted college grad. At the time, the idealistic chemist and biologist saw Elizabeth Holmes just as so many others did: As a visionary on the verge of completely disrupting the healthcare paradigm. As it would turn out, Erika's honeymoon phase at her dream gig lasted all of seven months. That's when she quit her job in the Theranos lab, bought a burner phone, and blew the whistle on one of the biggest con artists in American business history. The Theranos story has always seemed more than a little bit culty to us, so we jumped at the chance to chat with Erika about her experience. After all, sometimes a culty situation starts out looking like a promising job offer with a ‘visionary' who turns out to be a faux humanitarian. (We've been there, Erika. Oh…have we been there.) About Erika Cheung: Erika was born in Los Angeles, CA. She spent most of her education homeschooled, but started community college at age 14 and then went on to obtain a dual degree in Linguistics and Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley. She was one of the key whistleblowers that reported Theranos to health regulators. Her report subsequently led to the shut down of Theranos' clinical lab which prevented the company from providing false medical results to thousands of patients. This account is covered in the book Bad Blood by John Carreryrou, 60 Minutes, the ABC Podcast: The Drop Out, and Alex Gibney's documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley. Erika is the executive director of Ethics in Entrepreneurship, a non-profit whose mission is to foster ethical questioning, culture, and systems in startups and startup ecosystems. She's currently working towards obtaining her ACFE-certified fraud examiner's license to educate others on fraud prevention strategies and develop programs to protect business stakeholders from high-risk ventures. She is also an advisor to several whistleblower advocacy organizations to support individuals who may She is also an avid mixed martial artist in her free time and hopes to support efforts that leverage martial arts to empower trauma survivors. The documentary, titled: The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, details Holmes' rise to fame in the tech world and her substantial fall after it was discovered that her multi-billion dollar company, Theranos, was just smoke and mirrors.

Award winning documentarian Alex Gibney stops by to discuss his fascinating new film ‘Agents of Chaos' now streaming on HBO Max, which examines how Russian state actors operating from shadowy troll farms interfered with the 2016 presidential election, and weaponized our own prejudices against us to sow chaos and destroy faith in American democracy. Alex Gibney is known for his cinematic, gripping, and deeply insightful documentaries, he has won the Academy Award®, multiple Emmy Awards, the Grammy Award, several Peabody Awards, the DuPont-Columbia, The Independent Spirit, and the Writers Guild of America Awards. Gibney was honored with the International Documentary Association's Career Achievement Award in 2013 and the first ever Christopher Hitchens Prize in 2015. His credits include ‘The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley', Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (winner of three Emmys in 2015), and his current film ‘Agents of Chaos' now streaming on HBO Max.
In this episode, the guys chat about how a game of dice exposes a $9 Billion Dollar brand and how the innovation process and inventive heroes we idolize might not be all they're cracked up to be. In marketing, we always talk about aspirations and taking a brand from where it currently is to where we want it to go. How far can you ethically push aspiration, and when does that change from a positive thing to a grey area? Today, we cover the psychology behind people going into the grey area. In the movie, The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, Dan Ariely, talks about how we make the wrong decisions repeatedly in our lives. The dice experiment from the movie gave insight into how people rationalize a lot of terrible and dodgy choices that they make. Elizabeth Holmes believed she would solve a significant healthcare problem and save millions of lives. So, all of her dishonest decisions were justified. Dan Ariely says that cheating is a cost-benefit analysis. You weigh the options out, and you decide if it is worthwhile to commit the crime or not. We have an allowance within ourselves. There is an acceptable amount of cheating that falls within a threshold that won't damage our ability to see ourselves. Dan does another test where he pays people in tokens for giving correct answers to math problems. People will cheat and ask for a much higher number of tokens than they would if it was cash. Most people feel comfortable taking pens from an office, but they would feel uncomfortable taking a dime from a cash register. Before the internet, everything we knew was based on what historians provided us in textbooks. You probably didn't know this about Thomas Edison: Edison announced that he had an epiphany – his bulb was just six weeks away from working. However, he was completely lying. Edison was saying that to make money. A month later, Edison started his light company from the money he raised. His success did not hinge on what Edison learned; it hinged on creating hype and getting the public to believe in him. Was Edison a fraud that got lucky, or did he genuinely believe he was doing the right thing? Edison understood how powerful his personal brand was; however, he had a team of scientists that led the experiments, whereas Edison was the office guy. Does transparency kill innovation or move it forward? People are moving away from the fake it until you make it mentality, and are moving toward transparency in business. It's okay to make mistakes; it not okay to lie about it. At the end of the day, transparency can't solely build a brand and a successful company. The brand needs a legitimate and trustworthy product. Enjoy the show! We speak about: [04:45] About faking it and making it [10:20] The ends justify the means [11:45] Cheating is a cost-benefit analysis [17:00] About deception [23:30] What you didn't know about Thomas Edison [30:00] When does aspiration become deceptive?
