This was not a good week for the Chicago Cubs and there is not a lot of optimism in this episode.  The Cubs ended the week further behind the Cardinals than they were at the beginning of the week.  Oh yeah, and Javy has a hairline fracture, Kimbrel went to the IL, and now Bryant is missing games because of his knee.  At a time when the Cubs needed everything to fall in place, things are heading the opposite direction.  Become a supporter of the podcast at Patreon.com/IvyEnvy Follow Ivy Envy on Twitter Like the Ivy Envy Facebook page Download the free Ivy Envy iOS app Download the free Ivy Envy Android app Sign up for ESPN+ at IvyEnvy.com/espn

The Cardinals and Cubs have each seen their fair share of NL Central teams already this month, but there's nothing quite like the Cubs/Cardinals rivalry... I don't care what American League fans say! Corey Fineran is one of the hosts of the Ivy Envy podcast (@IvyEnvy). While I can't imagine many of you Cardinals fans would choose to listen to a Cubs podcast, I did it for you, and I can tell you, it's a good one! Both Anthony Rizzo and Jedd Gyorko could return to action early this week. José Martínez could make his lasting mark on the rivalry. And Jon Lester will have another go at Matt Carpenter... who could use a confidence boost or two in the series.

Comments" Call 888-563-3228 I've spoken about Corey Fineran before and how his Chicago Cubs podcast Ivy Envy helped get a rule changed in Major League Baseball. Corey's boss saw the impact podcasting creates and talked Corey into starting a podcast for his job. Corey's podcast helps high school students with special needs transition into the workplace. It went over well. It lead to him starting Next Up (His own business) Here are some key points: They tried it to see if it would work. They got feedback from their audience, and listened to it, and acted on it. They updated their equipment after they proved the concept. Corey's goal is to help as many students as possible. His niche (students with special needs) is often overlooked, or has no budget. So he created the content that was needed. One night it was speaking with his brother in law (who is well versed in running a business) and they realized that he could reach more students and have a larger impact if he did this on his own, and start his own company. So Corey: Used his brother as a resource to launch the business Converted his current employer into his first customer Used his mother (an accountant) to help with taxes Growing His Business Corey found that educators are not used to being "pitched." The tried and true strategies of mass emails, cold calling, etc were not going to work. So he did what any good podcaster would do: He went to where his audience was. He started attending events where he could talk face to face about his products and services. Common Podcast Lessons and Truths Translate to Business Listen to your audience and be open to suggestions When you have a great podcast people will spread the word about your show When you can, the best way to get feedback from your audience is face to face. It is also the best way to start building those relationships. While your audience can become your brand advocates, so can your family (so make sure they know what you are up to). Corey Fineran is the founder of IvyEnvy.com and the lead host for The Ivy Envy Podcast. He has been a Cubs fan since 1985 and he and his co-hosts discuss the Cubs from a fan perspective on his show. Corey and I talk about a variety of different things on today's podcast, but what I found most interesting are the creative ways Corey and his co-hosts are monetizing the podcasts through meet ups and the use of Patreon. It's definitely worth a listen! Aside from that, we talk about Facebook, fan engagement, and even honey bees! 03:35 - Corey had no idea what he was doing when he first launched his podcast. 06:50 - Corey didn't think about format in the beginning. 10:35 - Corey recommends you host meet-ups even if you know no one will show up, because it gets you comfortable with being out of the studio. 15:15 - What has Corey learned about audio since creating the podcast? 16:25 - It can only get so good when you rely on the internet to record your podcast. 16:55 - Content is more important than audio quality, to a degree. 18:00 - An audience that has been built organically has much more staying power. 18:45 - Corey didn't pay attention to the numbers, because he really enjoyed engaging with the audience, not matter how small it was. 19:15 - It changes your perspective when you look at your download numbers and compare it to speaking to that many people in a room. 27:20 - Does Corey remember a time when he had a connection with a listener that took him aback? 27:50 - Respond to your audience and really take the time to nurture that connection. 28:20 - You have to build your listenership one fan at a time. 31:15 - A majority of Corey's listeners are on Facebook, but he still engages quite a bit with them on Twitter. 33:20 - Corey created a Facebook group for his Patreon supporters. 41:25 - For his sports podcast, Corey does make it clear to everyone that he and his co-hosts are sports fans, not experts. 48:35 - Corey talks about his other podcast, Podcasters' Group Therapy. 53:10 - What is the most misunderstood thing about Corey? 56:20 - When was the last time Corey laughed out loud? 57:35 - What has Corey changed his mind about recently? This podcast was recorded partly at Podcast Movement a few years ago (2014?). A few years ago Major League Baseball shut down a bunch of podcasts who were using logos illegally, using the name of the teams illegally, but one of them was NOT Corey Fineran. He had named his show Ivy Envy. It was a show about the Chicago cubs. Then one day he got a direct tweet from the official Chicago Cubs team. He thought the team was coming down to shut down his podcast. So Corey called the front office, and they mentioned that hey had heard his podcast, and read his blog where he had criticized a certain contest the Cubs were running. The Cubs representative explained how it wasn't' a Cubs rule, but one from the Major League baseball. But because of Corey of the Ivy Envy podcast, the Cubs lawyers had taken Corey's points and gone to Major League Baseball, and in turn they changed the rules.  Your podcast can put you into a position of influence. You never know who is listening to your show. It just might be the head of a baseball team.  Check out Ivy Envy at www.ivyenvy.com Ready to start a podcast check out www.schoolofpodcasting.com

Because of his Podcast: He Discovered a Niche Who Needed A Product Got a note from Corey Fineran I just handed my boss my resignation letter! This podcasting journey started 7 1/2 years ago and it's now allowed me to leave my job and start my own business! You've probably heard me talk about Ivy Envy (my podcast on the Chicago Cubs) more than the one I did for my employer. Since 2012, I've been able to call myself a "professional podcast producer" as my employer created a new position for me to do video podcasts for teachers to play in their classrooms to help high school students with disabilities in their transition from high school to life after high school (primarily through work/employment). Well, there is a huge need for this type of curriculum and schools all over the state of Illinois have started using that podcast. I saw a need and last summer, I started working on starting my own business, creating innovative and interactive online transition curriculum and marketing it to schools all over the country. After receiving contracts from school districts and cooperatives, I'm able to leave my job at the end of this school year. Many of the people in this group have influenced me (whether they know it or not) to take this scary jump. +Bob Zerull +Ray Ortega +Daniel Hayes +Nick Seuberling  +David Jackson  and of course, +Tawny Fineran who has been insanely supportive over the last year as I've worked on building this. If you're curious to check out what I've been working on, you can find it here: http://transitioncurriculum.com Another Problem with Your Show's Title Headline As I now work for Libsyn (where you can get a free month using the coupon code sopfree), and I get to see some mistakes that people are making. Now I'm doing a bit of a repeat, and that is people make horrible headlines. In the past I've talked about starting off a headline with the date. What I am seeing now is people putting the name of their show at the beginning of the headline. Why this makes no sens, is any place you can see the headline (your website, a listing in iTunes) you already see the name of the show. Also here is another thing to keep in mind, on the podcasts app from Apple, you can only see 45 characters of the headline if you're not subscribed to it. Once you subscribe you see the entire headline. However, would you subscribe if every headline was:  School of Podcasting - How to Podcast Today w  School of Podcasting - How to Podcast Today w  School of Podcasting - How to Podcast Today w  You're wasting really, really valuable space.  Why do we care? I had a client who had a respected media outlet that wanted to put their RSS feed on their site. They tested it and the headlines were horrible, and they wanted the producer to change all of their headlines.  Want to make great Headlines, check out my Free Headlines Resources Multiple Websites Question Revisited Paul said, " Heard your comments about updating multiple websites. I have 7 x WordPress sites, have used ManageWP for a couple of years now, love it! VERY easy to update all sites at once, gives you immediate admin access to all sites without login and very simple to add and take new WP installations, with dynamic pricing.  Daniel said, " I use iThemes Sync. ]But you should also check out JetPack’s built-in module for plugin updates. Then, you can login to wordpress.com/plugins (I think) and update all your plugins from there. It’s not as thorough as Sync or others. But it’s free with no limit on sites. Is Blab.Im Going Away? The quick answer is no. However, the CEO stated this week "Blab is not doubling down on broadcaster tools.” They want to focus more on equipping people to hang out. We talked about this on the Ask the Podcast Coach show that I do every Saturday at 10:30 AM EST and here are some theories of what this might really mean. They can't make it reliable Podcasters are perfectionists They are working on other projects (an app for teens) This is as good as it gets.  For me it means, I'm not leaving the platform until it doesn't work for me. I will be scouting other options.  Thanks For the Review "What a fantastic resource this show has been for me. I can’t figure it out!” (to figure out = resolver, solucionar) Hi Reza and Craig, congratulations for your great job (on your great work)! you've found the perfect combination of learning English and entertainment; I really love your podcasts.I have pronunciation doubts about the words "tomatoes" and "potatoes" because I've heard different ways of pronunciation of both words, which is the correct one?.Finally, I send you (I'm sending you) a proverb in English that I've learned in English class when I was at school, it says: "It takes two to make a quarrel". I announce the winner of the Beginner's podcast rig (Mic, Mixer and Cables) Question from a listener: Wayne Brooks - Most of my podcast I listen to on iPhone sound distorted and at a high speed. Is there a setting on my phone or itunes software that I can adjust. Or is it the Broadcaster? Click the lower left hand side of the screen where it says 1x,2x, 1.5x or .5x speed until it says just 1x speed. It worked and he's listening to me (and other podcasters) in Normal mode :) -------------------- Moving from BTR Paul Kennedy asks a question about moving from Blog Talk Radio: Audio comment in the show and the answer in the show. ---------------- Should I have a link to my RSS feed on my website? Should I even have a website? Yes and Yes (more details in the show) ---------------- Contest winner Announcement: First, how I made the drawing truly fair. I put all the names/email addresses in random order using https://www.random.org/lists/. Then I put them back into a spreadsheet in that order and then put the numbers of lines of the spreadsheet into random.org and and did it one more time. The first name/email address on the random list was the winner. AND THE WINNER IS: Corey Fineran! Congratulations. From Corey: I'm emailing to introduce myself (and to get my name in the drawing a 2nd time). After the introduction, I'll explain why I'd like to win the mixer and mic. I'm Corey Fineran and I've been podcasting for six years. My main podcast is Ivy Envy, which covers the Chicago Cubs. We were Podcast Awards finalists last year (lost to ESPN). When we started, we basically took our backyard BBQ conversations on the Cubs and put them in podcast form. Over the years, things have changed and we're now recognized by the Cubs are legitimate media for certain events. We've been invited into the front office and been able to interview personnel from players to ownership. Of course, the most important thing we've been able to accomplish with Ivy Envy is to form an incredible community of Cubs fans around us. Podcasting has changed our lives through them. A few years ago, I was able to take my hobby of podcasting and turn it into a career. I am in education and work with special education students and helping them transition from high school to post-high school life, primarily though employment. I pitched the idea of a podcast to my employer and they loved this idea of connecting with high school students through a medium they are familiar with. I do The QC STEP Podcast in video and it started out just being shown in 14 high schools in our area. Since it started, I've been asked to present at conferences around the state of Illinois and now schools all around the state (and some in surrounding states) are using this pre-vocational podcast to educate their students. The reason I'd love to WIN the mixer and mic is that my wife (Tawny, co-host of Mommy's Cocktail Hour) have been asked to teach classes on podcasting at a local public library. One of the classes will be geared towards teenagers and the library would like to set up a podcast studio for public use, so teenagers can have podcasts and record them at the library and not have to buy the equipment for themselves. Obviously, I don't need the mixer for myself, but I would love to donate it to help raise up the next generation of podcasters. Thanks for the podcast and I'll have my fingers crossed when I listen to the winner being announced on your next episode! -------------------- Disclosures needed in Forums and Facebook/G+ groups? *** Disclosure: Even though I work for Blubrry and RawVoice Inc., the advice given here is my educated opinion based on 10 years of podcasting and is given freely and without regard to my relationship to any podcasting host or service and would be the same if I didn't have that relationship. -----------------

Today on episode 399 we hear how people are getting press credentials with their podcast, we have an interview with Tony from Patreon which is a service that Because of my Podcast - I have Press Credentials [2:34] Today Corey from Ivy Envy podcast explains how his show on the Chicago Cubs has allowed him to get press credentials from some of the minor league teams, which allowed him to interview the Owner of the Chicago cubs (how cool is that?) Tom Rickets. This is a great example of "scaling/niching down" your content. Instead of doing a podcast on Baseball, do it on the Major leagues. Not just the major league, but a certain division. Not just a certain division, but a specific team. Not only the team, but the minor league team, the PA announcer, and all the behind the scenes information that someone who is truly passionate about that team would love. Corey is going to explain how in the future he got a major league rule changed. COOL. Check him out at www.ivyenvy.com or subscribe in iTunes. Patreon Helps Content Creators get Paid and Build Community [6:35] Anthony Privitelli is the head of Creator Relations at Patreon. Patreon is similar to a crowd funding tool like Kickstarter, except its ongoing. You can have it set up to have your patrons (your supporters) pay you a monthly contribution. This may have you feeling the pressure to produce content (when you're not feeling creative). This monthly option may be a good fit for those who produce a lot of content and don't want to charge their patrons numerous times per month. The other options is to get paid per post. Your patron can set a limit if they want (so if you put out 30 posts in a month they can cap their support at 5). You post can be audio, video, or anything downloadable. They do not host the media. Tom Merrit (formerly of this week in tech) is making around $9000 a month. He has over 3000 patrons The D6 Generation is making $232 per episode with 74 patrons The Angry Chicken is making $176 per month with 43 patrons. Mike Falzone is making $371 per podcast with 49 patrons (side note he uses podomatic is in a world of hurt as his audience is too big - see I told you Podomatic is the Devil). Typical Video Strategy You can create a video and post it on YouTube (free) and mark the video as "unlisted" so that only people with the link to that video can see it (so you give the link to the video to patreon and it displays on your Patreon page - and you specify its for patrons only. Hot Spot for Amounts? The average pledge is $7. The hot spot is between $1 and $5 per post. Anthony Privitelli Video Interview Here is the Hangout On Air that I did with Tony, and you will see a little behind the scenes of my account. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A7z_tX4oMc&feature=share My Amazon Account Has Been Banned For Life[31:18] I wrote about this earlier in the week. My advice would be to NOT redirect your audience to Amazon through any kind of special link. In listening to some of the "bigger" podcasts, they all tell people to go to their website and click the banner. Its not as easy, but they are still associates and I'm not. You can read more about this here I still have affiliate programs through BSW, Same Day Music, and BNH so I will be updating my site. How to Avoid Podfading - Dealing with Negativity[42:14] When you put yourself out there, not everyone will like you. That can be a hard pill to swallow. Here are some tips to help you with negative comments. 1. You can't please everyone. 2. Label any positive responses you get via email. Print these out and make a folder. You could hang these on the wall. 3. Remember you are in control of the podcast. In some cases the person may have a point. HOWEVER if they want you to steer your podcast into a direction that you don't want to go, it's YOUR podcast. If they leave, that's OK. 4. George Hrab shared on his podcast how one of his listeners explained how his day was going horrible, and he listened to George's show and his show cheered him up. That's huge. New Edison Research on Podcasting Stats Pandora is top dog for online streaming radio. iHeart Radio is making a dent. Most people still listen to the radio in the car, but portable media (phones, mp3 players) are still growing in this area). 500% increase of Smart Phone ownership 78% of people 12-24 own a smart phone. 68-78% of people have a smart phone. More and more people are listening on portable devices and NOT on their computer. The computer went from 64% down to 46% while smart phone consumption went through the roof. 39 million Americans listen to podcasts a month. That's just Americans. The average podcast listener listens to 6 a week. Podcast continues to grow every single year.
