Why is the national media obsessed with Arizona?

For a long time, Arizona was not always in the political spotlight — or if it was, it was for controversies like former Gov. Evan Mecham, who was impeached and removed from office, or SB 1070, the legislation that made being in the country illegally a state crime, and made it illegal to fail to carry immigration papers, among other things. How things have changed. Now Arizona's a swing state; presidential candidates visit as often as kids visit the desert bar at an all-you-can-eat buffet. But some of those rough edges Stewart called out remain; the state is also ground zero for election denialism and conspiracy theories. Someone has to shine that spotlight, and it's the journalists from around the country who flock to the state, providing coverage like never before. TV, newspapers, magazines — everyone's getting in on it. So why is the national media obsessed with Arizona? This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we find out. We spoke with George Packer, a reporter for The Atlantic magazine who wrote an epic story about Arizona; Vaughn Hillyard, a reporter for NBC News who grew up in Arizona; and Jack Healy, a New York Times reporter based in the state. Hour 2: Pundits Says Kamala Won Debate, Undecided Voters Are Not As Certain: Jeremy W. Peters, Jack Healy, and Campbell Robertson of The New York Times write: “Immediate reaction from political analysts favored [Kamala] Harris, whose attacks appeared to rattle [Donald] Trump. She goaded him over the various criminal and civil charges against him. She said his former aides considered him ‘a disgrace' and that world leaders laugh at him. At one point, she asked whether he might be ‘confused'—a stinging line given Mr. Trump's relentless mocking of President Biden's mental acuity. And she questioned his emotional stability by saying he was not capable of processing his loss in 2020. But not all voters, especially those undecided few who could sway the election, were effusive about the vice president's performance. In interviews, these undecided voters acknowledged that Ms. Harris seemed more presidential than Mr. Trump. And they said she laid out a sweeping vision to fix some of the country's most stubborn problems. But they also said she did not seem much different from Mr. Biden, and they wanted change.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/11/us/politics/undecided-voters-react-debate.html

Arizona Pushes for Suburban and Rural Development, Despite Dwindling Water Supply

State-level officials in Arizona are getting more serious about water scarcity issues, despite the still-booming growth pressures that exist there. Some listeners may remember from a story we covered in July 2022 that rural areas outside of Phoenix, like the Rio Verde foothills, have found it almost impossible to drill wells and are now facing challenges from having their water delivered by truck. Now, the state has determined that there is not enough water for already-approved housing projects and will stop some developers from building if they rely too heavily on groundwater, given that it has become a finite resource. Arizona's allocation of Colorado River water is also being decreased due to drought, making alternatives quite limited. Still, the Arizona water agency has given permission to build 80,000 housing lots, and for the most part, construction is going to move forward on these lots. On today's episode of Upzoned, Chuck and Abby discuss why this development pattern in Arizona—and most of the Southwestern United States—is, as you might have guessed, unsustainable. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER it’s ANTHONY CARROLL from Seattle, and thank you CHARLES HALL for increasing your support.   More on the Tesla news from Tom Randall at Bloomberg: "The top-line performance Model 3 price declined to $58,000 from $60,900. That’s $20,000 cheaper than when it was first released last year. It’s also a bit quicker, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and having a top speed of 162 mph. Musk told reporters that making these final price cuts has been “excruciating,” and there will be no future price reductions to the Model 3. He declined to answer a question about the base model’s profitability. Tesla also reintroduced a lower-priced Model S sedan, which now starts at $79,000 with 270 miles of range. There’s also a long-range version starting at $83,000 with a 335-mile range, and a performance version starting at $99,000."   NISSAN REVEALS U.S. PRICING FOR LEAF E-PLUS: COSTS MORE THAN MODEL 3 "Nissan has just revealed U.S. pricing for the 62-kWh version of the LEAF. Unfortunately, pricing seems a bit too high following yesterday’s $35,000 Tesla Model 3 announcement." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "There’s a lot to like with this new LEAF. Its 62-kWh battery provides a range of up to 226 miles. Had it not been for Tesla shocking the world last night with the Model 3 base price announcement, we’d be rather excited for the LEAF. However, all versions of the LEAF e-Plus check in at a higher price than $35,000. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2019 Nissan LEAF PLUS are: LEAF S PLUS $36,550 USD, LEAF SV PLUS $38,510 USD, LEAF SL PLUS $42,550 USD"   Inside EVs Forum user Bloggin: "$35k gets you the standard Model 3, but who wants a Tesla without Autopilot?? Add the $3k and it’s $38k. Want a color other than black and now it’s $39,500. Want wheels other than black, now it’s $41k and well equipped and still below the Leaf SL at $42,550." And user Brian: "Leaf still qualifies for the full tax credit whereas Tesla only gets half. In four more months, Tesla will only get a fourth of the credit. By the time the Leaf loses the credit, Nissan will have put cash on the hood. So the e-Plus will always cost less than even a base Model 3."   https://insideevs.com/nissan-u-s-pricing-leaf-e-plus/   PEUGEOT BRINGS FULLY ELECTRIC STAND TO GENEVA PEUGEOT will be showcasing its new plans for an electric future at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, unveiling the all-new 100% electric PEUGEOT e-208 alongside the all-new PEUGEOT 208 petrol and diesel variants and hybrid 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED Concept. Another electric car – the Audi Q2 L e-tron - will be presented in a few weeks in China and will reach its first customers in that market in 2019. As an intent to show that the MEB platform underpinning the Volkswagen will be utilized on other Volkswagen group cars, Seat, the Spanish carmaker, has released images of its own take on the MEB architecture." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen will bring the I.D. electric hatchback to market first, instead of using Seat to test the waters. But the Seat is hardly a second banana, as its figures are convincing enough: the 62-kWh battery pack gives it a range of 260 miles (on the WLTP cycle), and its 204-horsepower electric powertrain takes it to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. With 100-kW DC charging, the battery reaches 80-percent capacity in 47 minutes. Kohei Hitomi said Honda management was not initially convinced by the car's styling, small size and limited range. " He said: "“The positive feedback for the Urban EV concept car was certainly a breakthrough to convince internally that a small-size EV would make sense and be appreciated. I also tried to convince people that an EV is meant to be used in urban conditions, [where] the [small] size of the car is the most important aspect. That's where it makes most sense. From that perspective, the small size is the most important aspect, so that was how we tried to convince people.
