In this life deeply soulful conversation we speak with  Nicole Avant to discuss her  tribute to her mom in her new book  "Think You'll Be Happy." We explore themes from Nicole's book including living a life centered around  love of family, community, the arts, gratitude and serving others. Nicole's mindset is an example of the power of  positive energy and the importance of being a blessing to others, no matter the circumstances. Nicole talks about her upbringing in a household filled with love, wisdom, and how she learned from so many wonderful people that were friends with her parents. Nicole's parents, Clarence Avant and Jacqueline Avant were both extraordinary leaders in the music industry and in their communities. The Avant  home was a meeting place for some of America's greatest artists and leaders such as Ella Fitzgerald, Maya Angelou, the Clintons and the Obamas. Despite her glamorous and successful life, Nicole remains humble and grounded, attributes she credits to her mother's teachings. We discuss how Nicole intentionally turned a tragedy into a source of inspiration, the importance of traditional values and the impact of small acts of kindness.  We know you will not forget the lessons Nicole shares on being good, spreading good, supporting people who are grieving and choosing to  be the blessing every day of your life.  Nicole Avant https://thinkyoullbehappy.com Nicole's father Clarence Avant Clarence Avant, Mighty Engine Behind Black Superstars, Dies at 92 Please stop by and say hello on Instagram @meantforit. visit our website at www.meantforit.com, and sign up for our newsletter here on substack. or email us directly at contact@meantforit.com. “I really think that the past, we can go back to it and we definitely learn lessons because I'm always a hindsight person. So in hindsight, I'm always thinking that, okay, what could I have done better? But the past experiences for me, I've learned as I've gotten older, is to grab the lesson. And hopefully there's a blessing in there too. And then move on. I used to stay stuck in the past and try to understand why, why, why, why, why I would spend so much time, Elise, that I'm never getting back or why did this person do that? Why did this happen? Why did they treat me this way? And really try to unpack all of their baggage. And what I've learned is the “why” doesn't even really matter. It's, you know, what is the lesson for me? What is the lesson for my soul that I need right now?” So says Nicole Avant, a philanthropist, filmmaker, and former diplomat. In her recent memoir, Think You'll Be Happy, Nicole describes attending to the grief and shock of her mother's unthinkable murder—she was shot in the back by a home intruder in 2021—by creating a living legacy in her honor. Her mom, Jacqueline Avant, had turned her Los Angeles home into a refuge for artists, politicians, and world-changers as the partner to Nicole's father, entertainment mogul Clarence Avant, who is the subject of Nicole's beautiful documentary,The Black Godfather. Nicole grew up sitting at the feet of extraordinary artists like Bill Withers, Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, Sidney Poitier watching as her parents navigated the world to make it better for future generations. In today's conversation, we talk about that legacy—as well as Nicole's relationship to the divine. Like her parents, she is a master connector—putting people together to see what unfolds. It was November 30, 2021, when Nicole Avant got a call in the middle of the night from her husband. The unthinkable had happened. Her otherwise healthy mom, Jacqueline Avant, was in critical condition at the hospital. She had been shot. Nicole would soon find out that her mother had been having an ordinary evening at her home in Beverly Hills when a man broke into her home in an attempted robbery. He shot Jacqueline, and then fled the scene. She died later that night in the hospital. Jacqueline was 81. It was an unspeakable tragedy that would leave most people paralyzed, enraged and probably seeking revenge. But Nicole's response surprised a lot of people. She decided that she's not a victim, and she would forgive her mother's murderer.  She shares this radical sentiment in her new book: “Think You'll be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude.” For those unfamiliar with Nicole, she is someone who wears many hats. She served as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas under President Obama—and she was the first black woman to hold this seat. She's been a force in political fundraising. She raised more than half a million for President Obama in one night in 2012, and she was part of a fundraising team that raised $21 million for him in 2008. She's also a movie producer, which isn't exactly surprising considering she was born into black Hollywood royalty—her father was Clarence Avant, the legendary music mogul who managed artists like Bill Withers, Sarah Vaughan, and Freddie Hubbard. Today, she finds herself again a part of Hollywood royalty, just of more recent vintage. Her husband is Netflix Co-Ceo Ted Sarandos. But unlike the British royals, Nicole Avant doesn't put her views through a PR machine. She says what she thinks, and she doesn't have time for bullshit. All of which is why we were so eager to have her on Honestly today.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Nicole Avant joins the show to talk about her book, "Think You'll Be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude." The memoir grapples with the tragic murder of her mother, the civil activist and philanthropist Jacqueline Avant, who was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at her home in 2021. Rather than becoming lost in the darkness, Nicole writes candidly about how she turned her pain into purpose, and moved forward through love and incredible resilience.   In this conversation, Avant explains how the initial idea behind the book transformed after the unimaginable loss of her mother, shares how she allowed faith to guide her during even the most trying times, and describes the healing power of saying, "I love you."  Avant also explains how she supported her 91-year-old father (the late Hollywood dealmaker and music mogul Clarence Avant) through the tragedy, shares some of the countless life-lessons her parents bestowed on her throughout the years, and reflects on what it means to live a significant life.

Clarence Avant, "The Black Godfather," has died. Clarence helped launch the careers or guide the careers of all kinds of folks like Quincy Jones, Bill Withers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and The S.O.S. Band among many others. Avant died quietly at his home here in Los Angeles yesterday. He did always talk about the two pieces of advice he got from an early mentor, the music manager, Joe Glaser. He said, never let on how much you know and ask for as much money as possible without stuttering. Clarence did just that. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, shortly after his beloved wife, Jacqueline Avant, was murdered in their Beverly Hills home. Her death was mourned by Bill Clinton, Magic Johnson, all of us here in Hollywood, and so many other people around the world. Nicole Avant, their daughter, always credited her mom and dad for being prominent philanthropists and bringing other family members into the love, passion, and importance of arts, culture, and entertainment. Clarence Avant was one of a kind and will truly be missed. Our condolences go out to their children and to the entire Avant family. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
