Long before Ted Sarandos’s company turned “binge watching” into a national pastime, the co-C.E.O. of Netflix stayed up long past his bedtime in order to catch The Jack Benny Program and I Love Lucy, developing a passion for film and television that has guided him ever since. After spending his early career rising through the ranks of the video distribution industry, Sarandos’s acumen caught the attention of Netflix founder Reed Hastings, who pitched Sarandos on his company: what if renting movies and television shows could be done from the couch? Over the following decades, Netflix evolved into the streaming service we know today. And all the while, Sarandos’s keen eye for potential smash-hits such as House of Cards continues to help deliver unforgettable plotlines to homes around the world. On this week’s episode of Table for Two, Sarandos joins host Bruce Bozzi to discuss his early life in Arizona, meeting his wife, Nicole Avant, and the process of writing the prologue to a new edition of her book, Think You’ll Be Happy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm back with a solo episode for the first time in a little while and I'm talking about the three pieces of parenting advice that I am loving right now. Parenting advice can be tricky because something might really resonate with you at one moment in time, but a year later you can feel completely different about the whole thing. With that in mind, these are three things that have been on my mind in this present moment that I think are not only applicable to parenting but also in life. There is a lot about parenting and life advice that go hand in hand. The way we parent our kids has to be in alignment with the way we parent ourselves, parent through challenges, and parent over the course of ups and downs. Here are the three things I talk about in this episode: Slowing DownCreating awareness around the pattern of over filling your schedule and recognizing when it's happening and why. Being more intentional about saying yes to things.Slowing down forces you to look at your inner self and what your needs are rather than constantly serving others. In parenting, slowing down allows us to be more thoughtful and present rather than emotional and reactive. Express Empathy Towards Your Kids Empathy is the ability to sit with another and allow them to express their feeling or emotion without the desire to change it. Wanting your kids to calm down or change their emotions is not helping them learn the life skill of regulation. We don't have to fix or change anything, we can just let it be. Being held by someone who is just listening and supporting is the most comforting thing.Inviting Moments of DiscomfortThe real way you learn about ourselves is through struggle. When we are in uncomfortable moments we learn things like resilience and flexibility. Uncomfortable moments build a foundation of self trust that is an incredible life skill. You never know what leaning into discomfort might bring your way and what doors might open because of it. Encouraging your kids to try something that will put them in a slightly uncomfortable situation helps them grow their confidence.Resources: My article about slowing down in parenting: https://theeverymom.com/parenting-coach-wellness-advice/Listen to the Dr. Shefali podcast episode here: https://theparentingreframe.com/podcast-episodes/episode-54-conscious-parenting-with-dr-shefali/Elise Loehnen's podcast episode with Nicole Avant: https://www.eliseloehnen.com/episodes/h1mjtwhv3bo2nddnd6ikmoj8ogsbzf-nkwfb-lpty8 Be sure to sign up for my Substack newsletter for longer and more specialized parenting content: https://albiona.substack.com/ I hope you found this episode helpful; for more parenting tips, check out my website and blog for more information. https://theparentingreframe.com/Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theparentingreframe/Follow me on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentingreframe
“I really think that the past, we can go back to it and we definitely learn lessons because I'm always a hindsight person. So in hindsight, I'm always thinking that, okay, what could I have done better? But the past experiences for me, I've learned as I've gotten older, is to grab the lesson. And hopefully there's a blessing in there too. And then move on. I used to stay stuck in the past and try to understand why, why, why, why, why I would spend so much time, Elise, that I'm never getting back or why did this person do that? Why did this happen? Why did they treat me this way? And really try to unpack all of their baggage. And what I've learned is the “why” doesn't even really matter. It's, you know, what is the lesson for me? What is the lesson for my soul that I need right now?” So says Nicole Avant, a philanthropist, filmmaker, and former diplomat. In her recent memoir, Think You'll Be Happy, Nicole describes attending to the grief and shock of her mother's unthinkable murder—she was shot in the back by a home intruder in 2021—by creating a living legacy in her honor. Her mom, Jacqueline Avant, had turned her Los Angeles home into a refuge for artists, politicians, and world-changers as the partner to Nicole's father, entertainment mogul Clarence Avant, who is the subject of Nicole's beautiful documentary,The Black Godfather. Nicole grew up sitting at the feet of extraordinary artists like Bill Withers, Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, Sidney Poitier watching as her parents navigated the world to make it better for future generations. In today's conversation, we talk about that legacy—as well as Nicole's relationship to the divine. Like her parents, she is a master connector—putting people together to see what unfolds. It was November 30, 2021, when Nicole Avant got a call in the middle of the night from her husband. The unthinkable had happened. Her otherwise healthy mom, Jacqueline Avant, was in critical condition at the hospital. She had been shot. Nicole would soon find out that her mother had been having an ordinary evening at her home in Beverly Hills when a man broke into her home in an attempted robbery. He shot Jacqueline, and then fled the scene. She died later that night in the hospital. Jacqueline was 81. It was an unspeakable tragedy that would leave most people paralyzed, enraged and probably seeking revenge. But Nicole's response surprised a lot of people. She decided that she's not a victim, and she would forgive her mother's murderer. She shares this radical sentiment in her new book: “Think You'll be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude.” For those unfamiliar with Nicole, she is someone who wears many hats. She served as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas under President Obama—and she was the first black woman to hold this seat. She's been a force in political fundraising. She raised more than half a million for President Obama in one night in 2012, and she was part of a fundraising team that raised $21 million for him in 2008. She's also a movie producer, which isn't exactly surprising considering she was born into black Hollywood royalty—her father was Clarence Avant, the legendary music mogul who managed artists like Bill Withers, Sarah Vaughan, and Freddie Hubbard. Today, she finds herself again a part of Hollywood royalty, just of more recent vintage. Her husband is Netflix Co-Ceo Ted Sarandos. But unlike the British royals, Nicole Avant doesn't put her views through a PR machine. She says what she thinks, and she doesn't have time for bullshit. All of which is why we were so eager to have her on Honestly today. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this episode, Nicole Avant—daughter of legendary music mogul Clarence Avant—looks back at her bustling childhood kitchen, where prominent Black figures were always stopping by. Nicole Avant is a film producer, author, and former ambassador for the Bahamas. She wrote the critically acclaimed book Think You'll be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude. She also produced the documentary The Black Godfather about her father's illustrious music career. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

When Nicole Avant moved to the Caribbean to serve as the United States Ambassador to the Bahamas, she left behind her husband, her friends, and a life and job in which she was comfortable. But it was because of these new challenges that Avant turned to the guiding force that has, in her mind, entirely shaped the person she's become: her family. Avant writes lovingly of her recently deceased parents in her new memoir, Think You'll Be Happy—its title echoing the last words Avant's mother ever spoke to her. On this week's episode of Table for Two, the political activist and producer joins host Bruce Bozzi to further discuss the values imparted by her relatives, and the importance of always living in the present. In the bleak aftermath of unspeakable tragedy, it is faith that dawns as our beacon of survival and healing. Faith, by its very nature, is about trust, hope, and a belief that God is in control. It allows us to seek solace and strength in something greater than ourselves, and it provides a comforting balm for our wounded hearts. Both of our guests this week faced heartbreaking circumstances that could have shaken their faith beyond repair, but each of them chose to wait and see what God would do in their lives as they healed from their scars and faced a new way of living through their pain. Nicole Avant is an author and film producer who grew up around the music business. Her father, Clarence Avant, was known as the Godfather of Black Music, and as an executive in the music business, he furthered the careers of jazz legends like Sarah Vaughn and Jimmy Smith, and was a sought after mentor for artists like Jamie Foxx, David Geffen, Whitney Houston, and others. Nicole's family life was steeped in music and in faith. It was the faith she would cling to when tragedy struck twice—first, the devastating loss of her mother to the hands of a gunman who invaded their home, and then, the loss of her father shortly after. Author and speaker Gary Miracle unexpectedly found himself on his deathbed in the emergency room, with a 1.7% chance to survive the night. A series of small miracles lined up, and though he ultimately lost all four limbs, Gary's life was spared, inspiring MercyMe's hit song, “Say I Won't.” Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: The Beathard family Upcoming interview: Rachael Lampa Operation Christmas Child Nicole Avant Clarence Avant Sarah Vaughn Jimmy Smith Jamie Foxx David Geffen Whitney Houston Bill Withers “Lean On Me” Philippians 1:11 NIV Think You'll Be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude Gary Miracle “Say I Won't” septic shock ECMO machine Depression www.garymiracle.com No More Bad Days Interview Quotes: “If I need to understand myself, I always go to a song.” - Nicole Avant “I always go back to the music because you don't feel alone. You never feel alone.” - Nicole Avant “The first scripture that my mom made me memorize was Philippians 1:11, ‘May you always be doing those good, kind things which show that you are a child of God, for this will bring much praise and glory to the Lord.' And that was kind of my mantra.” - Nicole Avant “My faith was everything to me during the experience [of losing my mother]. It does not take the pain away, but it does help you move through the pain. I was taking it day by day, and then it became, ‘Oh, Lord, minute by minute, minute by minute, give me today.'” - Nicole Avant “Something that took me years to learn, but I'm grateful that I learned it before this [tragedy], is forgiveness really has nothing to do with condonement.” - Nicole Avant “What a beautiful thing that you could change your thinking and you could use your imagination. And if you use it wisely and ask for help from the divine, you're going to be okay.” - Nicole Avant “I want to spend my whole life telling people that God is good and begging people to believe that God is good and convincing people of that, and then when something traumatic happens to me, still living my life like He is really, really good.” - Gary Miracle “I want to fight for life. I want to learn what it means to live and not just be alive.” - Gary Miracle “I'm still here and I'm still alive and I'm still present, and now I get to gladly say that I am in prosthetic legs and God's grace has been so sufficient and so good for me through this season.” - Gary Miracle “I get to say that there were only setbacks in my life because I thought they were setbacks in that moment, but looking back, they weren't setbacks at all. Christ was still working out my story and I just wanted it to be a lot faster and happen sooner than He wanted it to. So I had what I call setbacks, but Christ calls them next steps.“ - Gary Miracle “Be vulnerable enough to tell just one person who you really are, because what I've learned right now in my life is through the sharing of my struggles, both visible and invisible, I've never been more loved in my entire life when I thought I would be judged for all of that.” - Gary Miracle “I believe that there is going to be a day that I am going to be running down the streets of gold with my brand new legs, with my son Ellis, side by side, and I can't wait to meet him and I can't wait to be there. And I can't wait to meet all of you all there as well. So join me in chasing Jesus.” - Gary Miracle ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Nicole Avant joins the show to talk about her book, "Think You'll Be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude." The memoir grapples with the tragic murder of her mother, the civil activist and philanthropist Jacqueline Avant, who was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at her home in 2021. Rather than becoming lost in the darkness, Nicole writes candidly about how she turned her pain into purpose, and moved forward through love and incredible resilience. In this conversation, Avant explains how the initial idea behind the book transformed after the unimaginable loss of her mother, shares how she allowed faith to guide her during even the most trying times, and describes the healing power of saying, "I love you." Avant also explains how she supported her 91-year-old father (the late Hollywood dealmaker and music mogul Clarence Avant) through the tragedy, shares some of the countless life-lessons her parents bestowed on her throughout the years, and reflects on what it means to live a significant life.

NIMH Ep #621 Clarence Avant, ‘The Black Godfather' of music, dies at 92. According to USA Today Clarence Avant, the executive and businessman known as “The Black Godfather” of music and entertainment, died Sunday at 92. Avant died at his Los Angeles home, his son Alex Avant, daughter Nicole Avant and son-in-law Ted Sarandos shared in a statement Monday. “It is with a heavy heart that the Avant/Sarandos family announce the passing of Clarence Alexander Avant,” the family said. “Through his revolutionary business leadership, Clarence became affectionately known as ‘The Black Godfather' in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports.” Avant's family added: “Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come. The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss.” Avant's first foray into steering a record label came in 1967 with Venture Records, originally founded as an outlet for the soul recording artists on MGM Records. Venture Records lasted only two years, but Avant was ready to jump to his next assignment: helping to broker the sale of legendary Stax Records, which he did in 1968, before founding Sussex Records. Sussex, however, folded in 1975 after the IRS auctioned off the company's assets due to $48,000 in federal tax liens. In 2019, Avant received the Industry Icon Award as the honoree at fellow music mogul Clive Davis' annual Pre-Grammy Gala. “Clarence Avant was truly one of a kind. His passing is a great loss of someone who is irreplaceable,” Davis told USA TODAY in a statement Monday. “Clarence's extraordinary contribution to music and the barriers he broke throughout his career are unrivaled. He was the mentor to all Black executives in the music industry for decades, providing invaluable guidance and support while always standing up for equal rights. Clarence was humane and fair and inspired love and respect from all who knew him. I personally loved him and will miss him forever.” #ClarenceAvant #Vansilk1127 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/van-silk/support
Clarence Avant, "The Black Godfather," has died. Clarence helped launch the careers or guide the careers of all kinds of folks like Quincy Jones, Bill Withers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and The S.O.S. Band among many others. Avant died quietly at his home here in Los Angeles yesterday. He did always talk about the two pieces of advice he got from an early mentor, the music manager, Joe Glaser. He said, never let on how much you know and ask for as much money as possible without stuttering. Clarence did just that. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, shortly after his beloved wife, Jacqueline Avant, was murdered in their Beverly Hills home. Her death was mourned by Bill Clinton, Magic Johnson, all of us here in Hollywood, and so many other people around the world. Nicole Avant, their daughter, always credited her mom and dad for being prominent philanthropists and bringing other family members into the love, passion, and importance of arts, culture, and entertainment. Clarence Avant was one of a kind and will truly be missed. Our condolences go out to their children and to the entire Avant family. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Now, as the wife of Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, Avant continues to follow the advice she received as a child to use her power for good. She discusses with host Giselle Fernandez how, after working with her father in the music industry, she shifted to politics and became a top fundraiser for Barack Obama's 2008 campaign. Following her service as U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas, Avant then turned to filmmaking and released a documentary about her dad, The Black Godfather, which streams on Netflix.
