GLP-1s, CGMs, & The Future of Diabetes Care in Employee Health

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 7, 2025 22:07

In this episode of Healthcare on the Rocks: Employee Benefits with a Twist, hosts Brittany Hardaway and Rachael Baumgartner sit down with Dr. Janet Young, Clinical Analytics Advisor at Springbuk, to unpack a growing challenge for employers: the rising costs of diabetes care. ‍Dr. Young shares that diabetes-related spending has surged by 38% over the past three years—far outpacing other chronic conditions. A major driver? The skyrocketing use of GLP-1 agonists, medications originally developed for diabetes but now widely used for weight loss. "More than 40% of members with type 2 diabetes filled a prescription for GLP-1s last year—double the rate from four years ago," she notes. While these medications offer powerful benefits, including improved glucose control and cardiovascular protection, their costs continue to climb, creating tough decisions for employer-sponsored health plans. As employers strategize for the future, Dr. Young emphasizes three key priorities: tracking diabetes trends, proactively addressing prediabetes, and ensuring equitable access to care. The conversation also explores the expanding role of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) beyond type 1 diabetes patients. These devices, which eliminate the need for fingersticks, are gaining traction among insulin-dependent type 2 diabetics and could have broader applications—potentially even helping prediabetic individuals prevent disease progression. Dr. Young also highlights the stark disparities in diabetes treatment based on social determinants of health (SDOH), with more vulnerable populations less likely to access newer medications and monitoring tools. Key TakeawaysDiabetes costs are rising fast – Diabetes spending jumped 38% over three years, driven largely by the rising use of GLP-1 agonists.GLP-1 medications are in high demand – More effective than older treatments and linked to weight loss, GLP-1s are now used by over 40% of type 2 diabetics.CGMs are expanding beyond insulin users – Real-time glucose tracking is gaining popularity and could play a role in prediabetes prevention.Social determinants of health matter – Diabetes rates double in high-vulnerability populations, yet these groups have less access to newer treatments.Employers should focus on three things – Monitor diabetes trends, tackle prediabetes early, and reduce treatment disparities.Stay in Touch!Connect with Janet Young on LinkedInGet the complete 2025 Employee Health Trends report and other related resourcesConnect with our co-hosts Brittany Hardaway and Rachael BaumgartnerHave feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? In this episode of Healthcare on the Rocks: Employee Benefits with a Twist, Rob Lehane, co-founder and CEO of LeapHealth, explores the financial and logistical challenges of specialty infusion therapies—a critical yet often misunderstood aspect of employee healthcare. Drawing on his extensive experience in healthcare and benefits innovation, Rob highlights how LeapHealth is transforming the landscape with a focus on cost-saving and patient-centered solutions.Rob explains that specialty infusion drugs account for a small percentage of employee use but drive disproportionately high healthcare costs. LeapHealth addresses this imbalance by moving care from expensive hospital settings to patient homes, making treatments not only more cost-effective but also far more convenient. The episode unpacks LeapHealth's transparent pricing model, which eliminates drug markups and aligns care delivery with the needs of both employers and employees.Key Takeaways From the Episode Include:Specialty infusion drugs are a major cost driver, often due to inefficient care settings.LeapHealth's in-home infusion model provides a safer, more convenient alternative to hospital-based care.Transparent pricing eliminates unnecessary markups, saving employers significant costs.Employers can take actionable steps, like exploring site-of-care strategies and direct provider contracts, to better control infusion therapy expenses.Supporting employees with chronic conditions enhances productivity, satisfaction, and overall health outcomes.Stay in Touch!Connect with Rob Lehane on LinkedIn or Visit LeapHealthHave feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? What is Health Analytics?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2024 18:10

In this episode, we break down the broad and powerful world of health analytics, aiming to show how data can improve healthcare outcomes while managing costs. Health analytics goes beyond simple record-keeping to integrate data from claims, biometric screenings, wearable devices, and more. A great analogy in the episode compares it to having a “super-powered health detective” on your team, with predictive analytics that can even foresee risks like diabetes or cardiovascular issues before they manifest. This proactive approach allows employers and advisors to target wellness programs effectively, shifting from reactive treatment to prevention.Key takeaways include:Cost Containment: By analyzing claims, employers can identify overspending patterns and address them without compromising care.Predictive Analytics: Using risk data, employers can preemptively support at-risk employees with targeted health programs, gym memberships, and more.Machine Learning and AI: These tools enhance analysis by uncovering patterns in vast data, providing insights that guide better decision-making.Privacy and Data Security: As this field grows, robust measures and transparency are essential to build trust and protect sensitive health information.Future of Personalized Care: The goal is individualized health plans and preventive healthcare, helping people “stay healthy, not just get healthy.”Have feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? This episode explores the concept of health intelligence, unpacking its complexities and showing how it differs from health analytics. Health intelligence, unlike mere analytics, isn't just about gathering data but is about turning that data into actionable insights that drive change. A memorable comparison likens health intelligence to a detective piecing together clues: “It's not just about crunching numbers; it's about uncovering the story behind them to improve lives.” For employer benefits leaders and advisors, understanding health intelligence means moving from reactive healthcare strategies to proactive, data-driven interventions tailored to specific workplace needs.Key takeaways include:Defining Health Intelligence: It's more than data collection—it's the skill of applying knowledge to improve health outcomes.Analytics vs. Intelligence: Analytics provides data; intelligence interprets it to inform meaningful strategies.Real-time Data & Forecasting: Essential features for platforms include real-time insights and forecasting to predict and prevent issues before they arise.Tailored Interventions: Using data to create targeted health programs, like wellness initiatives or gym partnerships, that cater to unique workforce needs.Empowering Proactive Health Management: Health intelligence supports not only addressing existing health issues but also anticipating and mitigating future ones.Have feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? Brian Whorley, founder of Paytient, explained how the company's health payment accounts provide interest-free credit lines for out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, aiming to bridge the gap between existing healthcare savings accounts (HSAs), flexible spending accounts (FSAs), and the financial burden of healthcare costs. Whorley stated, "Credit is what we use in our lives to turn large, unexpected, or infrequent expenses into affordable things."Paytient's health payment accounts, unlike HSAs and FSAs, do not require employer or employee funding and do not perform credit checks on the account holders. Whorley emphasized that there's "no interest to the actual members" and "no credit check to the actual members." The goal is to enable more people to access healthcare and reduce financial stress around medical expenses.Whorley said Paytient can be used with existing HSAs and FSAs to create more equitable access to healthcare, particularly for lower-income employees who may struggle with high-deductible health plans. Whorley explained that Paytient is a flexible product that can be tailored to the needs of different employers and their workforce demographics. This allows employers to ensure that their health plans are more accessible and equitable for all employees, regardless of their income level or job position.Whorley also talked about how Paytient can help address deferred healthcare, which has been more prevalent since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. By providing individuals with a way to afford healthcare without incurring additional financial burden, Paytient aims to encourage more people to seek medical care when they need it, rather than delaying or avoiding treatment due to financial concerns.Whorley acknowledged the need to address the root cause of high healthcare costs, but emphasized that Paytient offers a practical solution for individuals and employers in the meantime. He said, "As long as you have your phone, you have a way to pay for care," demonstrating how Paytient can help make healthcare more accessible and affordable for everyone.Key Take-aways: Paytient provides interest-free credit lines to help people afford healthcare expenses.Paytient can sit alongside HSAs and FSAs, making all benefits more effective.Deferred care is a pervasive issue that can be addressed by providing more affordable healthcare options.Paytient can be deployed at any time throughout the year for employers.Paytient recently closed a $40 million Series B funding round to support its growth plans.Connect with Brian Whorley on LinkedInVisit Paytient's websiteConnect with our co-hosts Jennifer Jones and Mike Pattengale Subscribe so you don't miss an episode: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other popular podcast players. Have feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? How COVID Has Affected Employee Healthcare and Costs - Janet Young

In this second episode of a mini-series based on the 2022 Employee Health Trends report, we talk with co-author Janet Young, M.D., Lead Clinical Scientist at Springbuk, about the impacts COVID-19 has had on employee healthcare and employer benefit plans. Armed with data from more than 30,000 COVID patients, Janet and her fellow data analysts split the research into individuals who had COVID into hospitalized and non-hospitalized to get a better understanding of what was happening within each group.Their findings were stunning: during a six-month period after an initial COVID diagnosis, hospitalized patients cost about 70% more than the researchers expected. Even non-hospitalized patients saw an increase of about 25%.What's this mean for employee benefit plans? As the pandemic seems to be drawing to an end, employers need to be mindful that doesn't mean their healthcare costs will immediately drop. And besides the costs for acute care, the data show many people, unsurprisingly, have post-acute care mental health issues that may linger for an extended time. Listen as Janet provides recommendations for both employers and their employees. Connect with Janet on LinkedInGet the complete 2022 Employee Health Trends reportConnect with our co-hosts Jennifer Jones and Mike Pattengale Subscribe so you don't miss an episode: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other popular podcast players.   Have feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? You might know Spencer Smith hosts a popular podcast around self-funded insurance. Or you may have seen his video series on stop-loss insurance, which has become standard curriculum for many people just starting in the industry. But did you know Spencer loves heavy metal, which many people find shocking? Or that he once dabbled in stand-up comedy, where he occasionally bombed on stage, “which is just brutal to your soul.” Listen to him describe how he used that feeling of “being vulnerable on stage in front of 200 people and totally sucking” to build his confidence. In this wide-ranging conversation, Spencer encourages those who are struggling with self-confidence to “learn how to be comfortable being uncomfortable.” And he explains how one question — Are you a runner or a chaser? — can help you reframe your challenges and turn them into a personal guide to success. Finally, he describes the important lesson he learned from coaching his daughter's youth soccer team: why you don't need a shirt that says “Coach.”Connect with Spencer on LinkedInListen to “Self-Funded with Spencer” podcastWatch Spencer's Stop-Loss Insurance videos on YouTubeLearn more about the Springbuk Health Intelligence platformConnect with our co-hosts Jennifer Jones and Mike Pattengale Have feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? Take a big idea, surround yourself with phenomenal people, and execute on an idea. That's how Rod Reasen, CEO Springbuk, assessed the success he's witnessed in the five years since founding the health data analytics company.Rod believes benefits managers have a unique opportunity to take data from thousands of employers, use an analytics platform like Springbuk to apply rich health intelligence, and that will put them in position to move to true engagement between employers and individuals to improve health. In this episode, Rod talks about his biggest surprises in moving to a totally remote “work-from-anywhere” workforce and the challenges for an entrepreneurial CEO in transitioning from a startup to a scale-up. “One of the hardest but most rewarding” experiences is learning to pass decisions off to other leaders, then watching them learn and grow. From watching the healthcare industry for 20 years, Rod has observed an ebb and flow of vendors in the market. New vendors come in with a hyper-specialization, then over time as they become widely accepted, they branch out and become generalists. But one thing has remained constant. Listen to Rod explain what the constant is and why he's excited about the opportunity around it.Rod also explains the origin story of the name “Springbuk” and how happy he is with the choice over what it was initially called. Connect with Rod on LinkedInLearn more about the Springbuk Health Intelligence platformConnect with our co-hosts Jennifer Jones and Mike Pattengale Have feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? But she boils it down to understanding what is most important to the employer, asking questions such as: What point solutions do they have? What role does financial well-being play? What kinds of in-person vs. virtual options are needed? How do you use social determinants of health to select programs and benefits?Schroeder says data analytics, like those from Springbuk, help drive the direction of wellness programs, especially when considering how to use social determinants of health. She advises to start small - and gives tips on how to do that - so employers can gain some quick experience and direction.Used effectively, data analytics can inform the strategy and dictate when a change is needed by setting benchmarks and monitoring the progress toward them.Connect with Courtney on LinkedInVisit WellRightLearn more about the Springbuk Health Intelligence platformHave feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas? Jason is also M3's director of employee benefits captive practice. In this role, he serves as a subject matter expert, strategist, and thought leader on health captives agency-wide.Jason explains how the healthcare system and the insurance world around it were “broken” as he started his career 27 years ago. He describes what benefits captives are and how they came into their own during the early days of Obamacare. He says the introduction of employee benefits captives was the biggest twist he's seen in his career. With this innovation, forward-thinking, data-driven employers could pool together with like-minded organizations to create stability for themselves as purchasers of healthcare insurance. Jason explains how captives allow organizations “to exit a dirty risk pool and enter into a cleaner pool” with other groups that are doing similar things to manage and mitigate risk. This affords employers the benefits of being self-funded while gaining access to more data so they can be more strategic. Lastly, we invite you to weigh in on the heated debate about who asked the better questions: Jennifer or Mike.Connect with Jason on LinkedInConnect on LinkedIn with our hosts, Jennifer Jones and Mike PattengaleHave feedback, questions, or suggestions for show ideas?
