Laura interviews Graham Goulden, a retired police officer who worked in the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit and has spent the last 15 years trying to prevent male violence against women.  Three years ago, Sarah Everard's abduction, rape and murder by Metropolitan Service police officer Wayne Couzens was a huge wake-up call for policing culture – a culture that tolerated sexism and misogyny. Laura and Graham discuss red flag behaviours of bad cops and bystanders and what more needs to be done to stop another Couzens from operating in plain sight. #SarahEverard #Misogyny #CrimeAnalyst #TrueCrime #Podcast #Experts #SerialPerpetrator #MetropolitanPolice #WayneCouzens #TrueCrimePodcast Clips https://youtu.be/VUvFXVEoBiY?si=mYddr7Ugagy_XO6Q Sources https://grahamgoulden.com/2024/03/17/the-power-of-the-situation/ https://grahamgoulden.com/2025/03/24/the-power-of-the-situation-part-2/ https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-68418971 Thank You to Crime Analyst Sponsors Who Make the Show Possible. On the 3rd of March 2021, 33 year old Sarah Everard was kidnapped and murdered in South London.  A week after her disappearance, police officer Wayne Couzens was arrested and charged. He had used his badge to lure Sarah into his car by lying, and saying she was in breach of Covid Protocols.  The case became a watershed moment in the UK, devastating the community and leaving the nation understandably distrusting of the police. Steve Gaskin, a former Detective, became obsessed with the case and the failings of the MET police that led to Sarah's murder. At around 9pm On The Night Of March 3rd, 2021, after having dinner with friends at their house in Clapham, South London, 33 year old Marketing Executive Sarah Everard started to make the 50 minute journey back to her flat in Brixton Hill. It was a Wednesday night, Sarah still had some housework to do before going to bed in time to get up for work the following morning. She says goodbye to her friends, and makes her way into the dim glow of the street lights as the early spring chill starts to set in.Sarah, an intelligent, streetwise and independent young lady, had taken every precaution - she wore a bright coloured jacket, she picked a familiar route, she stayed close to main roads, she had promised frequent check ins with friends and she even spoke on the phone with her boyfriend for fifteen minutes during her walk, arranging plans for the following day. At around 9.28pm, the phone call with her boyfriend ended as she left Cavendish Road, Sarah was then seen on a doorbell camera on Poynders Road, and, at around 9.34pm - she was last seen talking to a stranger who had parked his car on the pavement next to her. After this, all contact and all sight of Sarah, was gone. She vanished. And she never made it home...How did a serving police officer abuse his power to such an extent that he was able to abduct Sarah in plain sight before murdering her? Why were so many troubling warning signs missed relating to Wayne Couzens' actions and behaviours before the crime? And How are women supposed to feel safe in modern society knowing that a police officer, someone meant to protect them, committed such a deeply disturbing, monstrous series of crimes? The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has been speaking to Today's Martha Kearney about efforts to transform the Met's culture, including the removal of more officers. It follows a review earlier this year by Baroness Louise Casey on the force's culture and standards after the abduction, rape and murder of Sarah Everard by serving police officer Wayne Couzens, in 2021. During the course of her review, another Met officer, David Carrick, was convicted of a series of rapes, sexual offences and torture of women. Baroness Casey found the force was institutionally racist, sexist and homophobic. The Met Commissioner also revealed the force is in talks regarding a pay-out to the family of murdered private detective Daniel Morgan. Mr Morgan was found with an axe in his head in the car park of a pub in Sydenham, south-east London, in 1987. No-one has been convicted over the father of two's killing, since which there have been five inquiries and an inquest, at an estimated cost of more than £40m.The Met has previously admitted corruption hampered the original murder investigation and apologised to Mr Morgan's family. What followed was a nationwide outpouring of grief, shock and anger. Women shared stories of male violence whilst the Metropolitan Police downplayed Couzen's as an unfortunate ‘bad apple' and declared he ‘was not a police officer.' Since Sarah we've heard nonstop about police officer's including David Carrick perpetrating abuse and violence towards women. More recently Wayne Couzen's extensive indecent exposure history was revealed, and the fact women reported him but the Metropolitan Police Service failed to act. Henry shares his investigation into PC Terry Melka, a police officer convicted of indecent exposure who is still a serving Metropolitan police officer. Laura details her experience of working in the Metropolitan Police and how police perpetrators were dealt with. This important interview was recorded on the day Baroness Louise Casey published her deeply disturbing 363-page report detailing institutional racism, sexism, misogyny and homophobia in the Metropolitan Police. Baroness Casey has called for urgent root and branch reform of the “Boys Club” that's the UK's largest police service. Trigger warning: Listener discretion is advised. The KentOnline Podcast has been told Kent needs millions more pounds to deal with the number of potholes on our roads. Around 15,000 have been reported across the county since the start of December due to snow at the start of winter - and plenty of heavy rain. The government announced extra funding in last week's budget with Kent getting around £6.5 million, but a report today says that is not enough. We've been speaking to the authors of that report, the man in charge of highways at the county council and a Tunbridge Wells resident who says the roads are so bad, it's affected the value of her house. Also in today's episode, a damning report out today into the Met Police has found it's institutionally racist, sexist, and homophobic. Baroness Louise Casey was asked to carry out a review following the murder of Sarah Everard by Wayne Couzens from Deal - who, at the time, was a serving officer. We've got reaction from Kent's police and crime commissioner. Bosses at a swimming school say they've been left homeless after the sudden closure of a leisure centre in west Kent. We told you last week how the site in Edenbridge has shut after the company that runs it went into liquidation - with no plan for the future. Hear from the chair of the Edenbridge Piranhas. And in sport, Gillingham will be looking to bounce straight back from the weekend's defeat as they welcome Crewe Alexandra to Priestfield tonight. The opposition are just two places and four points above the Gills in the league two table.

The Independent Republic of Mike Graham

Former government adviser Leon Emirali kicks off todays show to discuss another day of Lockdown Files as we find out MPs who criticised lockdowns were placed on secret red list, and former Health Secretary Matt Hancock hoped to offer Emmanuel Macron ‘spare' intensive care beds in Britain, despite increasing levels of the virus. As Rishi Sunak announces his plans to set an annual cap on the number of refugees entering the UK, we speak to Conservative MP Jonathan Gullis live from College Green to get his thoughts on the Prime Minister's initiative and how the government has handled the migrant crisis until now. Laura Dodsworth returns to The Independent Republic for her weekly lowdown on the top headlines from clown world and former police officer Norman Brennan closes the show to discuss the sentencing of Wayne Couzens who has bee sentenced to 19 months in prison for exposing himself on three occasions - one of those was just days before he killed Sarah Everard, we also get Normans thoughts on the parole hearing for notorious criminal Charles Bronson. The Nicola Bulley incident - Is it an example of how the British Press are out to trash the reputation of the Police (Part2)   The Black Spy Podcast Season 8, Episode 0006 This week's Black Spy Podcast discusses a worrying trend of the seemingly incessant drip feeding of negative stories by all forms of the established media against the police.  These stories are so biased that many capable individuals are put off from pursuing a career in the police. Consequently, recruitment is extremely difficult with the consequences for British society being grave. One should remember that the police alone in British society, are prohibited from striking due to## a 100 year old law put in place by Sir Winston Churchill. Two years ago an off duty police officer, Wayne Couzens, murdered young executive, Sarah Everard. This sent the press into a frenzy. Then, last year another off duty police officer, David Carrick, was arrested for raping several of life partners at various time over a period of years.  Prior to joining the police, both officers had previously served in the British Army, so were seen by police recruiters of being of good conduct.  Although both offenders committed their offences off duty, in both cases the press suggested that the most important factor was that these individuals were police officers.  The press also extrapolated that female members of the public, in particular, were not safe around police officers in general, on duty or off duty.  Articles and unending columns inches were devoted to these incidents and to the ‘so called police culture' they suggested spawned the incidents.  The copious column inches however, neglected to say that at least a third of all police officers are women and over 42% of all new police recruits are women. Plus, more importantly, presently 40% of all British police Chief Constables are women.     Strangely however, the press is nearly silent when it comes to the murderous behaviour of other professions, drawing little or no connection with their employment even when this is a major factor in their crimes. For example, in the last decade or so, nurses, on duty, have murdered tens of their patients in the UK - to practically no hue and cry in the press or media of any kind (TV, radio or printed).      •    Nurse Beverley Allitt murdered numerous babies at Grantham Hospital.     •    Nurse Lucy Letby, at the same time as Sarah Everarads death was being fully exposed in the press, was charged with murdering 7 babies and attempting to Murder 10 others!     •    Nurse Colin Campbell Norris murdered 10 of his patients and attempted to murder at least one other.     •    Nurse Benjamin Geen  murdered at least 2 patients in an Oxfordshire hospital where others victims sustained grave life threatening symptoms at his hands.     •    Nurse Victorino Chua of Stockport  Stepping Hill hospital murdered 2 of his patients and 21 others potential murder victims suffered life threatening hypoglycemia attacks at his hands.  Frankly the list goes on. This is not to mention:      •    Dr Harold Shipman who two decades ago in Manchester, murdered at least 250 of his patients. It is though he could have murdered double this number of patients.     •    Surgeon Simon Bramhall who signed his initials on patients livers      •    Surgeon Ian Patterson who who was found guilty of operation on countless patients, mainly women, for seemingly no reason. He disfigured them by removing breast etc. This was allegedly done for financial gain according to the relatively little press there was in comparison to the David Carrick police case.  However, unlike the hue and cry in two police cases, the press has not suggested at any stage that all doctors and nurses can not be trusted despite the gravity of the offences committed multiple serial murders by these very many more medic. Moreover, all these offences were committed whilst all these medical professionals were performing their duties.  Its also worth noting that at no stage have NHS chiefs come on TV and radio or written in the press apologies for the the ‘culture' of their profession that keeps allowing these mass murders to continue.  Seemingly it is only the police who are seen as dangerous, misogynistic and racist.  Could it be that the press considers police as working class plebs, but nurses a positive contributors to society and doctors, as fellow upper middle class professionals. Or is it just an inexplicable oversight by the press?  These and other issues are discussed in this week's Black Spy Podcast featuring long term national media journalist Firgas Esack. Are they a rite of passage or just a big headache? Well, #nosleepovers was trending on social media recently after an American influencer and mum of two, Tara Huck, shared her unpopular parenting opinion: she doesn't allow her children to attend sleepovers. When Netmums did a poll of their UK parents - 63% said they ban sleepovers. So is it the end for sleepovers? This year marks 20 years since Sarah and Gordon Brown lost their daughter Jennifer, who died ten days after being born seven weeks prematurely. In a search for answers, they founded the Jennifer Brown Research Laboratory in 2004, which looks into the causes and consequences of premature birth. Around 1 in 13 babies in the UK are born prematurely –before 37 weeks. Sarah is Chair of the charity Theirworld and tells Emma about the latest research. It's been over a year since Sarah Everard was adbucted, raped and murdered by a serving police officer, Wayne Couzens, who's now in prison for life. The vigil that followed in London followed to remember Sarah, ended up with clashes with the police and arrests. Now it's been reported that some police officers thought the event was an anti-police protest. The Evening Standard newspaper has printed what certain officers have told Westminster magistrates court this week. They say they faced resistance when they tried to break up the crowd, had feared being attacked, and were branded “murderers” by some people in the crowd. At the moment, six people are being prosecuted by Scotland Yard over the vigil. Jamie Klinger is one of the founders of Reclaim These Streets, which tried to organise the vigil. Psychologist and co-host of BBC podcast Bad People Dr Julia Shaw's new book Bi: The Hidden Culture, History and Science of Bisexuality combines her own experiences of being bisexual and her background in the psychological sciences to explore and celebrate a sexual identity she says remains marginalised and forgotten. It's been described as "one of the biggest medical scandals ever to hit this country". In 2017 surgeon Ian Paterson was jailed for 20 years after being found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent. Mr Paterson was diagnosing cancer when there wasn't any and cutting his patients open for no reason, performing unnecessary and damaging surgery. He also carried out unregulated "cleavage-sparing" mastectomies, in which breast tissue was left behind, meaning cancer returned in many of his patients. Ahead of a new ITV documentary being broadcast this weekend, Emma speaks to the whistleblower who first raised concerns about Ian Paterson – Mr Hemant Ingle, and one of Paterson's victim's Debbie Douglas, who is still campaigning for a change in the law to prevent anything like this from happening again.

On Saturday a ceremony took place at Bristol Cathedral to replace a plaque that marked the day women priests were first ordained by the Church of England, in 1994. The original plaque only listed the names of the men who attended the ceremony, and not the 32 women who had made history that day. Almost 30 years later, the plaque finally displays the women's names. Emma speaks to Reverend Angela Berners-Wilson, the first woman to be ordained by the church, and the Bishop of Bristol, Right Reverend Vivienne Faull, who led the ceremony on Saturday. A pregnant woman who was photographed being carried on a stretcher - following the bombing of a maternity hospital in the southern port of Mariupol in Ukraine last Wednesday - is reported to have died, along with her baby. The attack on the hospital caused outrage around the world. 4000 children have been born in Ukraine since the war began nearly three weeks ago. Emma is joined by Louise Callaghan, Foreign Correspondent at The Sunday Times. Marked as a breakthrough in female contraception the Pill has been used for over six decades. 28% of women say it remains their preferred form of contraception, followed closely by the male condom. However, more recently on social media some young women are documenting their decisions to come off it. Emma is joined by Dr Jane Dickson, Consultant in sexual and reproductive health care, and former vice president of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare, and Lottie Drynan who stopped taking the pill just over a year ago, after being on it for 13 years, and has been documenting her journey on Instagram. We know that women are more environmentally conscious when shopping for the household - but there's one area where that doesn't seem to be the case - cars. There are now over 600,000 plug-in electric vehicles in the UK, but a new study has found that 20% of women haven't even considered buying an electric car. We speak to Erin Baker, Editorial Director at AutoTrader about why women are less likely to opt for electric vehicles. It's been deemed a 'victory for women'. A campaign group has won a legal challenge against the Metropolitan Police over the force's handling of a vigil for Sarah Everard. Sarah Everard was murdered by serving Met police officer Wayne Couzens - and the vigil was to be near where she was killed in Clapham in London during Covid lockdown. But when the group got in contact with the police they were told that it would be illegal and could face fines over 10,000 pounds each and possible prosecution. So they cancelled the original plan but a spontaneous vigil and protest took place anyway. Anna Birley, the founder of Reclaim These Streets speaks to Emma.
