Welcome to episode 178 with Hannah Phillips, who is a mother, a runner, a writer, speaker and trainee psychotherapist. Han is a returning guest and first appeared on Proper Mental back at episode 110.  In that episode we covered her early experiences with OCD, her relationship with alcohol, getting sober and hitting crisis point shortly after. I reached out to Han to invite her back on for a specific conversation.  For episode 177 I spoke to Joe Griffin who is a psychologist and co-founder of the Human Givens approach to psychotherapy.  I was a wonderful conversation and I was very taken both with Joe and the approach to therapy that he co-created. I wanted to chat to someone who has worked with Human Givens as a therapist and someone who has experienced the other side and received this type of therapy. Hannah Phillips is both.  After coming within hours of taking her own life, Han was referred to a Human Givens therapist and she credits these sessions with both saving, then changing her life.  After getting back on her feet, she began training to be a Human Given therapist. In this episode Hannah and I chat about the therapy that she received and how it helped.  We chat about the courses she has been doing and how she is implementing everything that she's been learning. We also chat about the work she is doing around men's mental health in her local community and her upcoming ultramarathon. Hannah is one of my favourite people and a constant source of inspiration for me.  It was wonderful to have her back on the podcast! With guest speakers Hannah Phillips and Jess Phillips MP. Polarised and vitriolic debates are a problem for democracy, yet increasingly politicians and public officials are having to deal with intimidation and abuse – sometimes with tragic consequences. This is particularly an issue for women and those from minority backgrounds. With a general election looming in the UK, the tone of political debate, both online and in-person, is already steeped in anger. Yet, as the recently published findings of the Jo Cox Foundation's Civility Commission highlight, a more inclusive, fairer, and kinder public space is possible. To explore how we have reached a point of toxic politics, and how we can move beyond it, Cumberland Lodge is pleased to host a conversation with Hannah Phillips, Consultant with the Jo Cox Foundation, who has led on the work of the Civility Commission, and Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, who has been on the receiving end of much abuse in her political career.

Welcome to a very special Christmas episode of the Proper Mental podcast! Tis the season that not everybody enjoys, for a lot of different reasons.  I wanted to put something out at Christmas that might give someone a little lift if they needed one, even if it's just for 5 minutes.  Sometimes 5 minutes can make all the difference. I reached out to advocates, campaigners, authors, speakers and podcasters and friends and I asked them to record a voice note that might be nice for someone to hear over Xmas.  Some of these people I knew and some I didn't but all of them are wonderful and inspiring and I was so touched by the response.  You'll be hearing from Chris Young, Laura Belbin, Shocka, Natasha Devon, Hannah Phillips, Yvette Caster, Natasha Rae, Tatton Spiller, James Whithey, Gabriel Nathan, Eva Echo, I've put them all together here in this episode.  There are some anecdotes, some advice, some kind words or useful ideas.  You can listen in one go or dip in and out when you want to.  It might help if you're not really in the mood for Christmas and if you love this time of year, then it will inspire you to love it even more. I reached out to a bunch of strangers and asked them to leave a supportive message for a different bunch of strangers and all these people said yes.  That truly is a sign that you are not alone and to me, it's the true spirit of Xmas. There are so many support services that stay open and available during the Xmas period, please reach out if you need to.  Please talk to someone if you need to. Hannah Phillips first experiences in running had an element of a comedy sketch about them. She was first prompted to run after seeing a "fat girl" wearing the same top she had on - a girl who turned out to be her reflection. Spurred on, she set out to run round her home town of Merthyr Tydfil, only to be stopped by the police for wearing a balaclava she had donned to hide her identity. Since then, running - in slightly more conventional ways - has changed Hannah's life. After falling in love with the sport, she decided to run a marathon - a move which prompted her to write a book about her experiences. That book, 'No Run Intended,' became an unexpected bestseller and propelled her to a job with Welsh Athletics, encouraging other people to take up running. Along the way running also helped Hannah deal with the heartache of miscarriage, restoring her faith in her body's capabilities...   ---------------------------------- Subscribe to our Substack newsletter at https://runningtales.substack.com If you like this episode please consider donating to help us keep going: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stepforward

One of Florrie Forde's hit songs was 'Flanagan' from 1910. It brought a response from another Australian performer in Britain, Billy Williams, who in 1911 announced that 'I'm the Man that Buried Flanagan'. However, that can't have been true because Florrie Forde was able to say, 'Hello there, Flanagan!' as he returned to the Isle of Man in 1919.

Welcome to episode 110 with Hannah Phillips who is a writer, speaker, and mental health advocate. She is also an ambassador for Big Moose Charity, who she credits with saving her life, and the founder of Wonderful Women.  We chat about all of that in this episode! Han grew up around mental illness and experienced OCD herself as a child.  She would hide her struggles from those around her for many years before things came to a head.  After giving up alcohol, which was her biggest coping mechanism, Hannah's mental health started to decline rapidly. She just happened to pop into the Big Moose coffee shop at the very start of their fundraising campaign to provide 1 million pounds worth of therapy and support for anyone who needs it, and a very reluctant Hannah was one of the first people to receive help through the project. It was that help that empowered her to take back control of her mental health and since then she has been on a journey of advocacy, using her writing and speaking to raise awareness. We recorded this in person whilst walking around the forestry at Pembrey Country Park and it was an incredible experience!  The fact that Hannah is a good friend of mine just makes it even more special. We chat about giving up drink, suicidal thoughts, self-awareness, running, writing and everything in between.  And we chat about setting up Wonderful Women and the importance of amplifying working-class voices. Hannah Phillips is living the dream life she had been envisioning for herself since she was a kid: she's a full-time entrepreneur making a living off of creating art. She lives in a sunny studio apartment 10 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh where she paints, does photography, videography, design, and runs her company, Piper Creative, which she co-founded with her friend Aaron Watson.  Hannah previously was homeschooled and worked as a server and tennis instructor when she started her first media company, HP Media, in high school. She started taking photos and videos for a local ultimate frisbee team, where she found out about Praxis through one of the team members, Aaron Watson. Hannah heard his podcast interview with a Praxis team member and decided to apply.  She apprenticed at Flying Cork Media in Pittsburgh while continuing to work on her entrepreneurial projects. HP Media took off, and she went with it full-time upon completing her apprenticeship. From there, she co-founded Piper Creative, a media company offering documentary-as-a-service or "Vlogging 2.0." Listen to the full podcast episode to hear more about Hannah's experience with Praxis, how she became a full-time entrepreneur at 19, and the significance the color blue holds in her life.  Follow Hannah's life here: Instagram Twitter Personal website Piper Creative website Piper Creative YouTube

When you understand what people are trying to do with a college degree, which is buying a signal that says ‘I’m worth hiring’, you realize that signal is really not that strong. And if you set your mind to it, you can create a better, more powerful signal in a much shorter amount of time and for much less money. In this episode of Nat Chat, I’m joined by Isaac Morehouse. Isaac’s the founder of Praxis, an alternative education system, which focuses on giving participants a lot of applicable skills and a broader understanding of subject knowledge at a self-paced rate. It also pairs participants with startups and gives them more hands-on experience with 6-month apprenticeships. Two previous Nat Chat guests, Hannah Phillips and Zak Slayback, have both had experiences with the system. We cover a wide range of topics, including: Problems with the current education system and how it negatively impacts students. Why going to college is a riskier choice for most people. Why you don’t need a degree to get jobs and careers that you’re excited about. How you can begin self-educating yourself. Challenging the status quo and dealing with pressure from peers. The mistakes that most people make when learning a skill. And much more. Please enjoy, and reach out to Isaac on Twitter!   If you enjoyed this episode and our discussion on self-education, be sure to check out my episode with Zak Slayback. Also, why many people will prefer hiring people with hands-on experience compared to people with just a degree. 10:39 - Whether or not Praxis and the self-education process works even if you’re not going into a startup or new-age company. Also, a bit on soft-skills and hard-skills, having tangible evidence of work experience, and demonstrating your abilities. “The key is the ability to demonstrate is more important than what it is that you’re demonstrating.” 13:57 - The safety concerns with the risks associated with leaving college and not getting a degree. A bit on the societal and prestige concerns of not having a degree, as well. “That’s the safety you’re giving up. The safety of the good opinion of others. Other than that, there is no safety you’re giving up.” 15:22 - The negative habits picked up through the college system that makes success harder for you. Also, the de-schooling process necessary for some Praxis participants and a bit more on the safety concerns regarding a degree. “Once you have anything more valuable than a degree, which can include a year of work experience, demonstrating a product, nobody asks about your degree.” 20:05 - The social pressure of your friends making more than you, and you judging yourself negatively because of that, even if you’re enjoying what you do more. Also, the extreme benefits of having low-income as a young person and the extreme importance of opportunity-cost. “It’s amazing the number of things that you can do when you stop looking at ‘I need a salary and a title that’s impressive to other people.’” 23:34 - Traveling and learning, keeping net income low, and being brutally honest with yourself with what you actually value. Also, some discussion on the need to experiment, figuring out what you like and dislike before making a career choice, and not being shackled to your previous definitions of success. 28:09 - Treating everything you do like an experiment, getting real experience in the field you want to go into before actually deciding on it, and some discussion on the transference of skills in one field to other fields. Also, a bit on the unique aspect of having skills in several areas come together. 35:54 - What Praxis does differently compared to the traditional college system and why it’s much better for the participant at Praxis. Also, a few of the things that Praxis participants do while there and the importance of getting some real-world practice to theorize and apply feedback upon before you begin learning something. 41:50 - The biggest mistake that people make when teaching themselves something by studying something without ever going out and doing it. Also, this same problem found in schools and a perfect analogy for this at 42:43. 45:00 - Humans being naturally entrepreneurial, how the education system damages this natural entrepreneurial aspect, and rekindling that natural entrepreneurial ember that we all have. 46:58 - The issues with the lonely aspect of going these non-traditional routes and some solutions for this feeling of loneliness. Also, being more vocal about what you’re about and what you’re interested in and how that attracts people with similar interests. 52:20 - Wrap-up, where to learn more about Isaac and Praxis, and what the best resources are for starting down this path are.
