Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the incredible screenwriter BISHA K. ALI!An absolute must listen episode, firstly for those interested and invested in the acting and cinema/television kingdom, but also for those who want to hear a straight up brilliant episode full of honesty, truth and heart. Of course you get the shop talk - process, creativity, the whole science of it all (and the Marvel multiverse of course)- which is amazing in itself, but you also get some wondefully vulnerable and soulful thoughts and experiences on mental health, diversity, and how this ties everything together in a much more macro sense. It actually plays out like a perfect screenplay in many ways, which is no surprise. I mean. It's Bisha K. Ali! Enjoy, take notes, listen fully.IMDBINSTAGRAMTWITTERHOMEMS MARVELSCROOBIUS PIP on TWITCHSCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAMSCROOBIUS PIP on TWITTERSCROOBIUS PIP on PATREONSCROOBIUS PIP on IMDBBLAIR TWITCH PROJECTPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. When asked why she got into writing, screenwriter Bisha K. Ali joked it all started with a “teacher who gave [her] too much validation.” She said, “I wrote a short story when I was 8 and the teacher made me read it to the class. They were wondering who this kid was who had been sitting in the corner for the past six years.” This early validation, along with a family and cultural love for storytelling from her British-Pakistani background, is “fundamentally” a part of her. “Then, also the fact that I was an indoor kid raised on television and movies. That was my obsession as a child. I just didn't know there was space for me until I got older.” Despite being a quiet kid, Bisha didn't see herself as introverted, just “indoors.” So moving from solo projects to the Writer's Room wasn't particularly overwhelming for her. “I don't know the tI'm an introvert necessarily, just an uncool kid,” she joked. “I think I feed off the energy of other writers a lot. Being in the Writer's Room is the best. It's more fun when you're not the head because you're just pitching ideas and that's fun and exiting. When you're the head, you have to figure out all of it.” “Even know, if there's an opportunity to dip into a Writer's Room, it's the best. I love that environment. But then I also need five days of nothingness. So I need both.” As a screenwriter, Bisha is known for Sex Education, Four Weddings and a Funeral (2019), Loki, and creating the new Marvel series Ms. Marvel for Disney Plus. “It's always been about storytelling for me, in one form or another.” We also talk about Moon Knight in this interview. Created by Bisha K. Ali, Ms. Marvel follows Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old superhero fan who's just trying to get through high school when she discovers she has powers of her own. Ali discusses how she put together the writer's room for the MCU series: "I had a room that [reflected] the experience of the characters that we're talking about... We had to have authentic writers; we had to have writers who understood what intergenerational trauma is, what it is to be an immigrant, what it is to be a second-generation immigrant, what it is to be an outsider... in order to get this arc that I wanted to get." Ali goes on to share her advice for writers of color struggling to tell the stories they want to tell: "I think specifically [with] writers from marginalized backgrounds... there's this conflict of, 'I just want to do what I want to do, but I've never seen an example of that. I've never seen that made because people like me don't get to tell stories...' Stop worrying about that voice and really push yourself to be true to who you are." 'Ms. Marvel' Showrunner, Head Writer, and Executive Producer, Bisha K. Ali steps into The 'Verse! to discuss her work on the Disney+ Marvel series. We cover her origin story as a video gamer and dreamer to Hollywood writer to 'Loki' writer all the way to head writer on 'Ms. Marvel.' Ali's work on the series has focused on telling a superhero story we can all relate to, her main character Kamala Khan is a teenager growing up in America who just happens to have superpowers. We will not put spoilers in this description, but the further the series goes on, the more it becomes about family - it is quite beautiful. The 'Verse! Squad covers a lot with Ali, the difference between the comic books powers and the version Kamala has on the series, working with Iman Vellani, taking the series from Jersey City to Pakistan, video games, and so much more. We close with our Furious 4 questions, a lightning round with some tough choices. We had a great time with Bisha. Loki Episode 3 "The Variant" Synopsis Head Writer: Michael Waldron Episode Written by: Bisha K. Ali Episode Directed By: Kate Herron After interrogating Hunter C-20 for information on the Timekeepers, the Variant arrives at the Time Variance Authority headquarters to complete her mission, closely followed by Loki. He proposes a team up but the variant refuses. When Judge Renslayer confronts them Loki uses a TemPad to take them both out of the perilous situation but into an apocalyptic situation on Lamentis-1. With the TemPad out of power they are stuck on Lamentis-1 which is due to be destroyed by a dying moon. With meteors falling and gravity quakes becoming more frequent they need to charge the TemPad to escape the apocalypse. As they try to find a power source for the pad the Variant tells Loki she goes by the alias of Sylvie and she's been running from the TVA her whole life. She also reveals that the Minutemen are all variants stolen from their time and made work for the Time Variance Authority. After a run in with a lady and her big blaster, Loki and Sylvie sneak their way onto a train reserved only for the wealthy to get to the planet's evacuation vessel - the Ark - the only power source powerful enough to charge the TemPad. During their journey Loki gets drunk and is thrown from the train closely followed by Sylvie but the TemPad is broken in the fall. Their only hope now is to hijack the Ark that is shipping survivors from the planet to escape the apocalypse. Loki and Sylvie fight their way to the planetary escape vehicle but are unable to make it through the crowd in time. Their only option is to watch on as the Ark is cut in half by a falling meteorite as the moon begins it's final descent towards to planet Lamentis-1.
