Send us a textWhat happens when the players break? Dr. Pat DeMeo takes us into the sacred space of the Pittsburgh Pirates' trainer's room at LECOM Park to reveal the hidden world of Major League Baseball medicine.Growing up as a Yankees fan in 1960s New York, DeMeo never imagined he'd one day become the Pirates' medical director and head of orthopedic surgery at Allegheny Health Network. With remarkable candor, he shares the unexpected path that led him to this rare position – one of only 30 MLB medical directors in the world – and the steep learning curve he faced during his first years with the organization.Behind every pitcher's devastating injury or miraculous comeback lies an intricate dance between medical science and the business of baseball. Dr. DeMeo pulls back the curtain on how these decisions unfold, revealing the seasonal rhythm that dictates his work from spring training physicals to draft preparations and trade deadline medical evaluations. His philosophy remains steadfast through it all: "I don't represent management. I represent the player."The conversation takes a dramatic turn when DeMeo recounts saving a man's life on the field during spring training, performing CPR and using a defibrillator while players watched on bended knee. He describes Jung Ho Kang's catastrophic 2015 knee injury as "the worst baseball injury I've ever seen – worse than anything in football" and details the innovative surgical approach that allowed Kang to return to play when the odds seemed impossible. From AJ Burnett's transformative impact on team chemistry to the emotional challenges of forming bonds with players who might be "here today, gone tomorrow," Dr. DeMeo provides a deeply human perspective on medicine at the highest level of sports. His stories reveal not just the physical demands of baseball, but the mental fortitude required from both players and the medical professionals who care for them.Want more insider baseball stories? The Pirates didn’t get off to the start they hoped for on Thursday dropping a 5-3 loss on the road to the Reds. Jose Iglesias opened the game’s scoring with a double to bring home Jose Peraza in the second inning. It would take the Pirates until the 6th inning to get on the board when a Jung Ho Kang single brought in Josh Bell and Francisco Cervelli, thanks to some very aggressive base coaching by Joey Cora. However, the Reds would hit a pair of home runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a 5-2 lead and ultimately end the game. The Pirates were able to tack on one more run in the 8th and threatened with the bases loaded in the 9th, but it wouldn’t be enough. A former five-time MLB All-Star could help the Pirates solve their outfield needs via free agency this offseason. Free agency is underway in Major League Baseball. While, in typical fashion, the market has been slow thus far that will change soon. In a little over two weeks at the MLB Winter Meetings free agency will pick up, and this includes the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates have already been active in free agency, signing Jung Ho Kang to a new 1-year contract earlier in the month. However, the team now needs to address other positions of need in free agency. This includes finding an outfielder that can play in place of Gregory Polanco until he returns from injury before transitioning to a fourth outfielder/extra starter role. MLB.com's Dani Wexelman and Pirates reporter Adam Berry break down the club's decision to re-sign Jung Ho Kang. They also discuss the latest trade with the Indians, the 40-man roster crunch ahead of the Rule 5 Draft and the importance of Jameson Taillon in 2019.

The Pirates were first to sign a free agent this year - at least we that's what our lack of fact checking has told us. Jung Ho Kang is back with the Pirates on a 1 yr $3 base deal. Both Ryan & DiNardo are a bit puzzled on what went on behind the scenes, but you'll hear what we think of the signing and what it means for Colin Moran. Also, it seems as if Jerry Dipoto is set on 'reimagining' his roster. With Mike Zunino already traded, we imagine what players the Mariners may have that could potentially help the Pirates.
The very first moves of the Pirates offseason took place this week. Pittsburgh decided against picking up the options on Josh Harrison and Jung Ho Kang. We talk about the implications to this as well as the newly signed hitting coach - Rick Eckstein. We then wrap up pt. 2 of our 'Trick Or Treat' segment on pitchers. Lastly, we bring on a special guest for another addition of 'Drunk Talk'.
Matt and Steve are talking about this week in sports updates, including: World Series is over with the Red Sox coming out on top. The pitching was outstanding from the Sox, so outstanding that the Sox picked up the $15 million option on Chris Sale for next season and signed David Price to a $120 million 4-year deal. The Dodgers are going to have to make decisions on several of their players such as Machado and Freese. This was actually one of the lowest rated World Series in the last 10 years. Steve Pearce was the World Series MVP. Pearce has been a journey man, starting his career here with the Pirates. Speaking of the Pirates, they decided to NOT extend offers to Jay Hay and Jung Ho Kang. Cutch is a free agent. We will be keeping an eye on him to see where he lands this off season. WPIAL playoffs are here, and we've got some brackets. Penguins went on a tear through their Canada swing with wins over Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. Crosby was first star of the week with 5 goals, 7 points total. The Pens had 23 goals as a team in 4 games. The Pens came back to town to take on the Islanders who BTW have the best road record in the NHL. The Islanders handed the Pens a 6-3 loss in a somber moment at the arena. Matt and Steve recap NCAA action as Pitt Football squeaked out a win over Duke with a final-second 40-yard TD. Pitt heads to Charlottesville to take on the Cavaliers, which could end up being for first place in the Coastal Conference of the ACC. Notre Dame had a big blowout win over Navy in San Diego and have moved up to #3 over all. Northwestern heads into South Bend. Let's hope that we get the Notre Dame that plays hard and finishes a game to show up. PSU squeaked out a win at Iowa and have fallen to #14 to have Michigan come to Happy Valley. Again, PSU has been a tail of two teams this season. After taking a huge loss a couple weeks ago to Iowa St, WVU rebounded with a huge win over Baylor. WVU has fallen to #12 and head to Texas to take on the Longhorns. The Steelers had a slow start over the Browns, down 6-0 after the first. They got it rolling with a 33-18 final. James Conner had 211 AP yards and 2 TD earning him Offensive Player of the week. Big Ben has been spreading the ball around, hitting 8 different receivers going 24/36 for 257 yds and 2 TDs with 1 INT. We wrap this week's show with some NFL trade deadline updates. Matt and Steve are talking about this week in sports updates, including: Riverhounds got a win 2-1 over Richmond Kickers. Goals from Neco Brett and Romeo Parkes. The Riverhounds were down 1-0 after the first half and came back with the 2 goals after 20 shots in the second half. Richmond only had 3 shots and all were in the first half. The Riverhounds have a bit of a break until June 16th at the NY Red Bulls. R.I.P. Dwight Clark - known for the catch in NFC title game over the Cowboys in 1981 that was the start of 4 championships in the 80’s. He passed from ALS. Clark had 2 Pro Bowl appearances, 2 Super Bowl rings as a player, and is still 3rd on the list of Niners receiving yards of 6,750 4th in receptions with 506 and 7th in TD’s with 48. In 87, Clark moved to the front office where he earned 3 more rings as an executive with the Niners. In 1999 he joined the Browns in an executive role. In PGA Tour news, Bryson DeChambeau wins the Memorial at Murifield Village “Jacks Place” in Columbus in a 2-hole playoff. Tiger made a charge, but came up short, as well as Rory McLlory, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, and Lefty. This week is the St Jude Classic at TPC Southward in Memphis TN, then the next tournament is the second Major of the year, the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in South Hampton NY. The Knights are down 3-1 to the Caps and are headed back to Vegas for game 5. Good news, the Knights haven't lost 4 games in a row all year. Bad news, only 1 team has come back from 3-1 to win the cup (Leafs in 1939). The Caps have been clicking on all cylinders. The Great 8 has been getting his shots and a few goals. Hate to say that it looks like the Caps' year. The whole Caps high-power offense is on fire. The Cavs and Warriors head to Cleveland for games 3 and 4. The Cavs are down 2-0 to Golden State. We talked game one last week on how it had a wild ending. Game 2 was all Warriors and the Cavs really didn't have a chance. Steve gives his theory on this series. Steeler OTA’s are just about over. The players and coaches know what needs to be worked on. Paul Zise Article. Pirates have lost 17 of 24 and almost had a NONO tossed on them from Waka in St Louis. Meadows got to start in Center, but Polanco was still in the lineup. The Bucs are now .500 at 30-30 but found their way there the wrong way. Jung Ho Kang is doing well in Florida and looking to make a return this season. There is still no timetable for his return. Bruce Keson R.I.P Florida St wins Womens' Softball Championship. Max Scherzer is the first to 10 wins this season. 13 Ks in 8 innings and had a perfect inning. Nothing has happened with the Penguins. Kessel trade rumors are flying. Welcome to the third episode of the Call to the Pen flagship podcast! New episodes Monday and Wednesday. In today’s episode, host and Call to the Pen contributor Jonathan Platek discusses the possibility of a Mike Trout MVP candidacy. He also discusses an article from Call to the Pen contributor David Hill about the the Pirates Jung Ho Kang perhaps never being allowed back into the United States, and how that paints a bleak future for the Bucs. There is also a Judge’s Chamber on tap, a segment on loan from the K&P Show, a segment in which Aaron Judge’s recent feats of hitting are on display and discussed.Jon also discusses the absolute stupidity of Jung Ho Kang’s 3rd DUI, which he received in Korea in the off-season, currently preventing him from entering the United States. Jon also discusses the silliness of painting these kinds of problems—including the events like the Jose Fernandez death—as somehow “sad” or “tragic” for the player, and not their victims or potential victims.
Jung Ho Kang is going to miss the beginning of the season for the Pirates. MLB.com's Matt Waymire and Pirates reporter Adam Berry discuss Kang's legal troubles that are not allowing him into the country and if Gregory Polanco will be able to see the field to open the season. Adam Berry also caught up with Clint Hurdle to break down why they made the position changes in the outfield this offseason.

Andy and Bob get together to talk about the Hall of Fame election of former Major League Baseball commissioner Allan Huber 'Bud' Selig. They discuss the legacy of the man who was in the commissioner's office during: the 1994 players strike that led to the cancellation of the World Series for only the second time in baseball history, the entirety of an era baseball that is now known as 'The Steroid Era', and an All-Star Game tie. He also was responsible for home field advantage during the World Series being awarded to the team that was in the league that won the All-Star Game, so there's that. Once the duo finish digging through the highs (and mostly lows) of Selig's tenure, they dive right into the hot stove talk surrounding Andrew McCutchen, Jung Ho Kang's [third!] DUI in Korea, the end of the Jeff Locke era (and ERA) in Pittsburgh, and what the Pirates should be doing during the Winter Meetings. While the Indians' winter has been a quiet one so far, Bob waxes poetic about what could have been if Matt Holiday had signed with the Indians, wishes upon a star for Edwin Encarnacion to join the Tribe, and then finishes up with a discussion of what could have been with a healthy Michael Brantley in 2016.
Benches cleared. HRs were hit. Dekes led to injuries. Pitches were thrown with purpose. In the end, the Washington Nationals took the series finale with the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-7, winning two of three in PNC Park to improve to 91-64 on the season a night after they clinched the NL East crown. It was a long, four-hour and one-minute game filled with homers and a bit of ugliness, but the Nats came out on top in the end. Now they head home for the final regular season homestand.
Although the Pirates suffered a rough loss at the hands of the Cardinals on Tuesday night, they're still hanging around in the NL Wild Card race. MLB.com's Matt Waymire and Pirates reporter Adam Berry talk about the return of Jung Ho Kang and the legacy of Roberto Clemente on Roberto Clemente Day.

The future is now! We are coming up on September. What does this mean? If you’re in a holds league then it’s time to make your big run! But before the baseball comes the food, thus we needed to discuss grilling in Germany. Todd is disgusted that we grilled without a Weber Grill. Jamacian style cooking folks. Want a YouTube video? Sure… what?!? It doesn’t exist. I just spent 20 minutes looking through youtube videos and couldn’t find this method. Basically, you use a super high heat and over-marinate the chicken. Especially important is a ton of herbs. Then you stack all the chicken (skin on!) into the middle of the grill, this is really counter-intuitive to every grill rule you’ve ever learn, but trust me. The marinade/herb mixture drips into the fire creating a ton of smoke. The chicken pieces at the bottom will get pretty dark pretty quickly. The key is to rotate the chicken every couple of minutes and put the ones on the top to the bottom to char. The ones at the top continue to cook indirectly from the heat coming off the pieces on the bottom. If done correctly, you’ll end up with chicken that has a nice black char, but still is moist inside. We had a great idea in the beginning of the season refer to Jung Ho Kang’s power as K-Pop. Darnit, why we didn’t follow up on this will remain one of the great tragedies of the 2015 season? This leads us into a discussion about the middle infield. In typical 2020 All-Star fashion, we wander into a discussion about no pop, speed guys like Anthony Gose. Pop-speed-pop, a new form of EDM? No, we go back to guys with power and discuss the two big boppers at the corners, Sano and Bryant. Todd likes Sano’s power and I like Bryant’s sneaky speed. And speaking of power, we go to Top 5 3Bs for next year. We’re really going all-in on the young guys at the hot corner. Same discussion with the outfield. Is Mike Trout still #1 overall? Four of the top 5 are pretty standard, but the fifth is a long-time favorite of the podcast that might surprise you. Queue Scary Music: CLOSERPOCALYPSE! The Boston situation is ugly. Jean Machi is the guy, but probably best to just leave him to someone more desperate. The Oakland situation seems like Drew Pomeranz is the guy. We like him a ton more than Machi (so he’ll probably lose the gig tomorrow). The best of the bottom of the barrel prize goes to Tom Wilhelmsen. He’s solid and the other guys in Seattle are having issues. Greg Holland doesn’t really scare us too much. But the guy to own there would be Wade Davis, but he’s good enough that he should have been owned already. Addison Reed? Not a closer, but he got traded to the Mets. Can the Mets fix him? We’re not hopeful, but you never know. September Callups Lighting Round: Corey Seager, Jesse Winker, Urias, Nick Williams, Javy Baez. As always, check us out on Twitter @2020AllStars, Instagram 2020AllStars, and iTunes. Season 3 Episode 25 (42:56)
