Jim is joined by Pittsburgh-based sports journalist Mike Asti to break down the hall of fame candidacy of former MLB catcher Jason Kendall. First, Jim and Mike cover how Kendall's first five years with the Pittsburgh Pirates is comparable to Buster Posey and Joe Mauer's first five years in the MLB (13:04). Next, they discuss Kendall's 112 run season in 2000, how he compares favorably to several pre-WWII HOF catchers, and how he ranks among the best catchers from 1990-2010 (29:01). Finally, they break down just how historic Kendall's games caught numbers are compared to every other catcher to ever set up behind the plate (53:10), before making a final call on whether or not Kendall deserves a plaque in Cooperstown (61:25).

On today's episode: Act I (0:46-7:14): THE BIG STORIES: In the second game of a fiery three-game series between the Nationals and Padres, benches cleared prior to Jurickson Profar's at-bat in the first inning. Right after the dust settled, Manny Machado blasted a two-run homer to set the stage for another emotional game between these sudden NL rivals. Profar, who delivered the walk-off single the night before, sent San Diego into a frenzy again with a sixth-inning grand slam that turned a one-run game into a five-run lead. The Nats brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Padres held on for a 9-7 win. José Ramírez showed yet again why he's one of the most complete players in baseball, hitting his 21st home run and making a slick backhand stop in the seventh to key a 10-8 win over the Orioles. Cleveland has won seven straight to claim baseball's best record. The Subway Series started with a bang -- several of them, actually -- as the Mets hit four homers to chase Gerrit Cole after four innings at Citi Field. Aaron Judge's 8th-inning grand slam made things interesting at the end, but the Mets beat the Yankees 9-7 to improve to 14-6 in June. Act II (7:14-8:33): WHIPAROUND: Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff homer in the Dodgers' win over the White Sox, his ninth straight game with at least one RBI, tying a single-season franchise record. Tarik Skubal strengthened his Cy Young case by spinning seven shutout innings in the Tigers' win over the Phillies. Ketel Marte homered and came through with the go-ahead RBI single in the Diamondbacks' 5-4 win over the Twins. Act III (8:33-9:19): LOOKING AHEAD: Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds carries a 22-game hitting streak into Wednesday's series finale against the Reds. It's the longest active streak in the Majors and the longest by a Pirate since Jason Kendall hit in 23 consecutive games in 2003. NBA – Champion Warriors celebrate fourth title in eight seasons From the moment all those months ago that Klay Thompson uttered “championship or bust,” the Golden State Warriors seemed set to make good on his lofty proclamation. It took Thompson getting healthy at last, then Draymond Green and Stephen Curry overcoming their own injuries down the stretch and a cast of youngsters shining on the big playoff stage for the Warriors to win again. Golden State captured the franchise’s fourth championship in eight years Thursday night by beating the Boston Celtics 103-90 in the clinching Game 6. NBA – Orlando still evaluating all options with No. 1 draft pick College basketball season ended almost three months ago, the NBA draft lottery was more than a month ago and the draft itself is later this week. Seems like the process should be winding down. Orlando Magic President Jeff Weltman sees it differently. He says the real work is just getting started. The Magic haven’t decided yet what they’ll do on Thursday night when the draft rolls around and they have the No. 1 pick. Other teams have called to gauge what the asking price would be if they want to trade for that selection. NBA – Magic-Rockets, Pistons-Blazers to open Vegas summer league NBA Summer League will start with a little Midnight Madness feel, at least in some of the country. And if the Orlando Magic keep the No. 1 draft pick, then that player won’t wait long for his summer debut. The league released the 75-game summer league schedule on Monday, with the first game in Las Vegas set to pit Orlando against Houston on July 7 at 10 p.m. Eastern. That game will be followed by a midnight Eastern tip-off between Portland and Detroit. Those two matchups are the only ones on the Day 1 schedule. All teams play five games in Vegas. The championship is July 17. That was to have changed Saturday, when a long-awaited call was to have finally taken place. But the day came and went without any contact, leaving an anguished Cherelle Griner to wonder what went wrong. FINA – Ledecky leads 1-2 American finish; Italian sets backstroke mark Italy’s Thomas Ceccon has set a world record in the men’s 100 backstroke and Katie Ledecky has claimed yet another gold at the swimming world championships in Budapest.  Ceccon stunned the competition by clocking 51.60 seconds to shave 0.15 seconds off the previous best mark set by American Ryan Murphy at the 2016 Olympics. It’s the Italian’s first world title.  Ledecky extended her record haul of titles to 17 with her fourth in the 1,500 freestyle alone. Ledecky never looked threatened and finished 14.74 seconds ahead of Katie Grimes. Ledecky punched the water in delight then embraced her teammate. One finds out quickly in life at some point that they have no control over their name, initially. For better or for worse we are given labels in the form of a first, last, and sometimes middle name. Some are born into a name like Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Rothschild. Other having more mediocre and less relevant names such as Johnson, Smith, and Newkirk. Until some legal requirement we are stuck with our names. Even worse, names we aren't born with are given to us in cruelty. Names that are used to denigrate, torture, and embarrase. Names can be a blessing or a curse. You can be a Rockefeller or a Mud. Nunamaker or Dirt. In this episode we dissect such a topic, though we do so in a jovial manner, and at the expense of both the named...and the listener. Guests on this episode (with their twitter handles linked) are editor-in-chief Max Rieper, pop cultured Josh Duggan, Syrian refugee volunteer Joshua Ward. I am your usual humble host, Shaun Newkirk. Topics include: Shaun doesn't know Hall of Famers Playing a game of: I'll give you a player name, you tell me what decade they played in Harlond Clift Perhaps inefficiently signing Joakim Soria Not the Speaker of the House Tip O'Niell Royals comprehensible but perhaps also unexplainable payroll spending Clint Robinson Losing Ben Zobrist Jesse Barfield Who can the Royals sucker into acquiring Omar Infante Chuck Knoblach Alex Gordon is going to sign with the T-Bones Dummy Hoy Jose Martinez: not necessarily that old and maybe is Richie Sexson Pie Traynor Playing the: How many top 100 prospects would this player get? game Red Schoendienst Not talking about Jason Kendall and he is absolutely not a Hall of Famer, don't even bring it up Johnny "Ugly" Dickshot Music Introduction: Adele - Hello Outro: Dr. Hook - Sylvia's Mother Learn more about your ad choices. Here is our first podcast. We plan on posting a new one once every other week. I mentioned some things about pitches per plate appearance in the show, and wanted to follow up with a link to the leaders in Pit/PA last year: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2009-pitches-batting.shtml Jim Edmonds' career average is 4.08 Pit/PA, which is well above the major league average of 3.75 and would have ranked him 28th best last year. For reference, the top three Brewers last year were Mike Cameron (ranked 53rd in MLB), Prince Fielder (68th), and Jason Kendall (100th). The new comer, Carlos Gomez, boasts a meager 3.45 Pit/PA. While this statistic is not the be all and end all of offense, certainly it would help the Brewers to get some more batters in the lineup who can make the starting pitchers throw more pitches. It was fantastic to see Carlos Zambrano have to throw 121 pitches to get through 5 innings. If you have any questions or topics you'd like us to discuss please email the show at brewersreview(at)gmail.com. A correction: the Brewers have had three quality starts and not just two. I think I say both numbers in the podcast. Bush, Gallardo, and Wolf all had quality starts. Another correction: Jack mentioned that Corey Hart had eye surgery. He hasn't (yet). He's just tried glasses/goggles/contacts. No lasik yet.
