How many traffic lights are out in Joburg currently? Well, we want to count! The ongoing issue of non-functioning traffic lights continues to disrupt daily commutes. Residents said broken traffic signals regularly force drivers to wait more than 30 minutes, worsening congestion and travel times. Beyer's Naudé Drive, one of the most severely impacted areas, starts at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in Auckland Park and stretches through Melville, Roosevelt Park, Northcliff, and Blackheath, crossing the N1 Western Bypass at Randpark Ridge. The appellants, the Attorney General of Quebec and His Majesty the King, obtained leave to appeal to the Supreme Court from the declaration of unconstitutionality made by the Quebec Court of Appeal pursuant to s. 52(1) of the Constitution Act, 1982 with respect to the mandatory minimum sentences of 12 months' imprisonment provided for in s. 163.1(4)(a) and (4.1)(a) of the Criminal Code. According to the majority of the Court of Appeal, these provisions violate s. 12 of the Canadian Charter, namely, the guarantee provided against cruel and unusual punishment, and cannot be justified in a free and democratic society under s. 1 of the Canadian Charter. That declaration of unconstitutionality resulted from appeals filed notably in respect of two decisions rendered by the Court of Québec regarding the sentences to be imposed on the respondents, Mr. Naud and Mr. Senneville. Mr. Naud was convicted of two counts relating to possession and distribution of child pornography. Sentences of 9 months' imprisonment for possession and 11 months' imprisonment for distribution pursuant to s. 163.1(4)(a) and (3) of the Criminal Code were imposed on him, along with various consequential orders. Mr. Senneville was convicted of two counts relating to possessing and accessing child pornography. Sentences of 90 days' imprisonment to be served intermittently for possession and 90 days' imprisonment to be served intermittently for accessing child pornography pursuant to s. 163.1(4)(a) and (4.1)(a) of the Criminal Code were imposed on him, also along with various consequential orders. Argued Date 2025-01-20 Keywords Charter of Rights — Cruel and unusual treatment or punishment — One-year minimum sentences — Child pornography — Counts relating to possessing and accessing child pornography — Whether s. 163.1(4)(a) of Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46, violates s. 12 of Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms — If it does, whether it is reasonable limit prescribed by law that can be demonstrably justified in free and democratic society under s. 1 of Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms — Whether s. 163.1(4.1)(a) of Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46, violates s. 12 of Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms — If it does, whether it is reasonable limit prescribed by law that can be demonstrably justified in free and democratic society under s. 1 of Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms — Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, ss. 12 and 1 — Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. Emotionally distant from his elderly, senile father, Daniel nonetheless returns to South Africa to care for him during his final months. Following his father's death, Daniel learns of an unusual clause in the old man's will: he will only inherit his half of his father's considerable estate once he has spent time with Theon, a cousin whom he hasn't seen since they were boys, who lives on the old family farm in the Free State. Once there, Daniel discovers that the young son of the woman Theon lives with is seriously ill. To hire a hitman in South Africa has become “very cheap”, says Yusuf Abramjee of Tax Justice South Africa. According to his information, an assassin can be hired for as little as between R5,000 and R100,000. He speaks to BizNews following the attempted assassination of South African Revenue Service (SARS) Advocate Coreth Naude. “…clearly advocate Naudé - with a great track record in fighting crime and corruption and criminality - was targeted because she's hurting the pockets of people who have allegedly pocketed millions and millions of rands,” says Abramjee. The attempted hit has also been condemned by SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter with these words: “This shocking act is intended to intimidate officers of court to abandon the vital work they're performing in furtherance of our country's legal system.”

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2024 5:04

Viens no viņa beidzamajiem atdzejojumiem bija mana brāļa mācītāja Lara Saliņa teksts. Welcome to Cuppa 37 of 40. In this episode of the 40 for Tea, host Rachel Allan invites you to a lively conversation with NNI dialogues Jonelle Naudé and Weibke Renner.   We dive straight into tea, crossing divides and removing the charge from power words.   These powerhouse women are firm believers in the power of facilitated, genuine communication and the transformative role of empathy in resolving conflicts. At the heart of their philosophy lies the knowledge that when people's voices are truly heard, a space for understanding and new solutions are created. NNI dialogue is a systems based methodology born through working in post apartheid South Africa.  Tangible change is measured through 3 specific steps. We are challenged to question the dominating focus on the "why am I right?" mindset, which often hinders progress. Instead, we are encouraged to consider that multiple truths bring resilience to a system, fear as a protector and perhaps the emotions we feel don't always belong to us. We celebrate what it is to be human, are offered valuable perspectives on how to get unstuck in relationships, teams and in life events.  As we ask the question "how do we be with complexity and move forward together?" There's also a bit of energetic plumbing!   So grab your cuppa and let's dive in together. Ved.
