If you've seen Ginger Snaps (2000), you know it was a movie pretty much made for Spooky Tuesday — so it's kind of a shock that it's taken us this long to get around to it. But when it comes to ending the WW part of WWVVSDE (Werewolf vs. Vampire Seasonal Depression Event), we just might have saved the best for last. On this week's episode, we're diving into the Katharine Isabelle cult classic, breaking down the social commentary exactly as Emily Perkins would've wanted, and calling out all of the cultural touch points past and future that this flick was in conversation with. This week we have a look at the 2000 horror film GingerSnaps. This is Episode #454! Ginger Snaps is a 2000 Canadian supernatural horror film directed by John Fawcett and written by Karen Walton, from a story they jointly developed. The film stars Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle as Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald, two morbid teenage sisters whose relationship is tested when Ginger (who has started her period for the first time) is attacked and bitten by an unknown animal, and then later, during the next full moon, slowly starts to transform into a werewolf. The supporting cast features Kris Lemche, Jesse Moss, Danielle Hampton, John Bourgeois, Peter Keleghan, and Mimi Rogers.Ginger Snaps received a limited theatrical release in May 2001. Despite modest box office receipts, the film was a critical success. It has since amassed a cult following and has been reexamined for its feminist themes. It was followed by a sequel, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, and a prequel, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning, which were filmed back-to-back and both released in 2004.This week's endorsements:Julia - Severance and The TraitorsTony - Warlung, Scorpion Child, Trick r Treat Non-Special-Edition Version, Gothic Slayers, Companion, The GorgeDrew - The MatronBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/castle-of-horror-podcast--4268760/support.

“We're almost not even related anymore…” Fall is upon us and The Blind Rage Podcast is wrapping up A September of School Scares with John Fawcett's 2000 cult classic GINGER SNAPS! Sisters Ginger and Bridgitte (Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins) are teenage outcasts. On the night of a full moon, they encounter something that furthers their inclusion among their peers. Ginger is brutally attacked by an otherworldly figure and soon notices she's changing. The wounds she suffered—wounds that should be life-threatening—are already healing. Hair sprouts in the most unusual places. A tail extends from her lower back. At a time when Ginger should be transitioning from a girl to a woman, she's transitioning into something else entirely. Something very, very deadly.
Eric from Bloody Good Horror joins Caitlin to cover 2004's Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed. We revisit monstrous menstruation as a trope and praise the movie for being a truly excellent sequel. Tangents include: podcasting, snacks, PSLs, urban legends, easter eggs in horror movies, legs vs eyes count, werewolves vs regular dogs, soups, flaws that would save us in a horror movie, and animated movies. Be sure to check out Eric's music HY-FY, especially his new album, dropping Friday, September 13th.

Rise and Thrive: Conversations For Greatness with John Merkus
Welcome to the grand finale of Season 1 of Rise and Thrive Conversations for Greatness! In this special episode, we reflect on the incredible journey we've shared over 37 inspiring episodes. From personal growth and motivation to tales of resilience and leadership, this season has truly been a testament to the potential within us all to rise and thrive. Episode Highlights:
The outwardly comfortable life of mother and wife, Winona Dalloway, has dark currents running beneath. "Thunderhead" is her interior monologue as she navigates the everyday acts of collecting the children from school, shopping and preparing for a dinner party when in fact she is a woman in peril. A homage to Virginia Woolf's "Mrs Dalloway", "Thunderhead" is a reminder of the terror that can lurk unseen in the lives of others. + Bet Schenk brings a poet's pared-down style and awareness of the power of language to this story set in a small country town where the local teen hero is actually anything but - and his brother knows the truth. "The Most Famous Boy in Town" is billed as teen fiction but it's a story for all ages. + Our regular leading literary light Kylie Cardell reviews "Lioness" by Emily Perkins, winner of the 2024 New Zealand Ockham Book Awards. Episode 3: Innovating urban governance: the Creative Bureaucrat Does creativity have a place in City Hall? The idea that bureaucracy should or can be creative certainly runs counter to common ideas we have of city government. But recently, that has begun to change. Innovation in city governance is being recast as ‘creative problem solving'. Drawing on stories from city governments around the world, in this third episode of ‘Innovating Cities', Tom Baker and Pauline McGuirk discuss what it takes to build creative capacity within bureaucracies. Tom Baker is Associate Professor in the School of Environment, University of Auckland. His research focuses on how public policies are made and implemented, addressing social, institutional, ideological and spatial dimensions. Pauline McGuirk is Senior Professor of urban geography and Director of the Australian Centre for Culture, Environment, Society and Space, University of Wollongong. Her work revolves around critical studies of urban governance, its changing geographies, material practices and politics, and the differential implications for urban places, communities, subjectivities and power. Episode 2: Innovating urban governance: Design Thinking What is design thinking and how might it be useful for city governments? In this second episode of ‘Innovating Cities', Robyn Dowling and Sophia Maalsen discuss how design thinking is being conceptualised and operationalised in city governance innovation. Drawing from examples internationally and in Australia, they ask what design thinking means to those who use it, what it is used for, and how using design thinking may open up new opportunities to address urban problems. Robyn Dowling is Dean of the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, University of Sydney. Her current research is concerned with the ways in which urban governance and urban life are responding to climate change, technological disruptions and the diffusion of innovation practices. Sophia Maalsen is Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, University of Sydney. She is currently researching the application of computational logics and technologies to “hack housing” and address issues of housing affordability and innovation. Her research is predominantly situated at the intersection of the digital and material across urban spaces, housing and governance. En este episodio conversamos sobre "Ginger Snaps" de John Fawcett, protagonizada por Emily Perkins, Katharine Isabelle y Kris Lemche.
This week we tackle a classic theme in the horror genre: WEREWOLVES. However rather than start with what might be thought of as the typical classic werewolf movies we decided to watch Gingersnaps, a canadian release from 2000 which explores the werewolf narrative through the eyes of teen girls.A heads up that this film and our discussion of it touches on subjects like animal death, gore, discussion of sex, drugs, and suicide. Additionally we will be fully spoiling the movie and we feel your experience will be a lot better if you watch this movie in particular before listening to the podcast. The plot is fairly complicated, there are some cool twists, and we don't want any of those to be dampened by spoilers ahead of time, so if you haven't seen it and wish to, pause now and come back when you're ready! We'll be waiting.SummaryGinger Snaps is a 2000 Canadian horror film directed by John Fawcett who would later go on to co-create the popular tv show Orphan Black. The film was written by Karen Walton, scored by Mike Shields, with cinematography by Thom Best and editing by Brett Sullivan. The film opens in the community of Bailey Downs. In a shot reminiscent of Poltergeist, the camera pans across grotesquely similar houses that have metastasized on the natural landscape in a relatively new housing development. The opening shots linger on the edge of the development where the cookie-cutter houses give way to the wilds of nature. We witness the early and horrific discovery of a family dog's remains, victim of an apparent animal attack and, we find out soon, only one in a series of such incidents. As the woman who discovers the dog screams in the background, we see her neighbor and central character, Brigitte Fitzgerald (played by Emily Perkins) walking cautiously out of the garage armed with a variety of dangerous looking tools including a blowtorch.Hunching her shoulders, glaring angrily at the world, pale faced and gothic, Brigitte enters the house to tell her sister, Ginger Fitzgerald (played by Katharine Isabelle) about the neighbors dog, interrupting what at first appears to be a suicide attempt. It is clear in a moment that Ginger is just showing off or playing at the theme of suicide, adopting a bored-of-life attitude that reeks of teen angst. After some angry banter we realize the girls have adopted identities as gothy town outcasts and have promised each other to escape their dreary town by 16 or else die in a suicide pact.We transition to a typical high school. After a classroom scene where the girls cause a stir with their suicide themed class project, we cut to gym class outside with boys ogling girls playing field hockey. Ginger and Brigitte fight with Trina Sinclair, a popular girl and apparent bully. Coming out on the short end of that exchange, Ginger cajoles Brigitte into kidnapping Trina's dog. That night, in the middle of executing that plan Ginger finds she is bleeding and realizes with horror that she is the first of the sisters to get her period.Drawn by the scent of blood, a beast in the night viciously attacks and bites Ginger, dragging her into the forest. In a panic Brigitte runs after her and tries to scare off the beast with the flash from her instant camera. The beast is startled and runs off, immediately killed after being hit by a van driven by Sam Miller (played by Kris Lemche), a local pot dealer and, we find out later, botany nerd.Ginger recovers from her attack, horrible wounds healing rapidly, and a series of physical and behavioral transformations begin. Her latent anger and aggression boil over, bristly hair grows in her scars from the attack, a tail buds at the base of her spine, and her period intensifies. Previously hidden under layers of clothes she strides into school in a tight outfit and with new self assurance.
It's a gutsy call but Auckland Theatre Company has just released a full season of plays for 2022, off the back of a frustrating two years of disrupted and cancelled productions. Artistic Director and CEO Jonathan Bielski tells Lynn Freeman he's confident the shows will go on, and has scheduled two comedies first up in recognition that Tamaki Makaurau audiences could do with some cheering up. Homegrown plays include work by Emily Perkins, Nancy Brunning, Oscar Kightley and Nathan Joe.. Lynn first asked Jonathan about the many ways the pandemic impacted on ATC this year,

It's October baby and it's time for the scaries! For the first selection this month we're talking Ginger Snaps! I had to get Mikey on the pod since he's my resident 'scary movie' icon. Not only did GINGER SNAPS (2000) challenge typical horror movie tropes, but it was also a vibrant kick to the werewolf genre. We've reached the final entry into 2001: A Horrortober Odyssey with a look at a film that's part allegory for puberty and part traditional werewolf story: Ginger Snaps. Starring Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins, it focuses on two sisters who have to cope with the fallout of one of them being attacked by a werewolf. As the older of the two begins to exhibit physical signs of a terrifying transformation, the younger sister attempts to find a way to stop her from fully turning. It's a novel concept that ends up crumbling under the weight of its muddled, prolonged finale. Award-winning screamwriter Jess Byard joins Chris to talk about the film, the puberty allegory, and why werewolf stories tend to be generic. You can follow Chris Stachiw at @Casualty_Chris and the Kulturecast @kulturecast. In our inaugural episode, V and I discuss one of the better werewolf movies out there. This episode was supposed to be recorded on April 8th, but *someone* decided she had to give birth three days before (listen close and you can hear baby Zoe crying in the background). We hit on the tripartite theme of food, sex, and death, as well as Furry ex-boyfriends and the best way to get period blood out of clothes. Enjoy!
Concluding our discussion of Aristophanes's play with Lucy Lawless and Emily Perkins. We focus on trying to connect its lessons to the here and now: Is Lysistrata's victory properly described as the ascension of some kind of "feminine spirit" over warlike values, and how does that actually relate to women's struggles now to attain positions of power? Listen to our performance and then part one of the discussion before listening to this (or get the ad-free, unbroken Citizen Edition). We are rejoined by actresses Lucy Lawless and Emily Perkins to discuss Aristophanes's bawdy play. Listen to us perform it first. Supplementary readings included Jeffery Henderson's introduction to his 1988 translation of the play; "Sexual Humor and Harmony in Lysistrata" by Jay M. Semel (1981); and "The 'Female Intruder' Reconsidered: Women in Aristophanes' Lysistrata and Ecclesiazusae" by Helene P. Foley (1982). Don't wait for part two! The PEL Players return to perform a "cold read" of Aristophanes's play about using a sex strike to end war, first performed in 411 BCE. Jeffrey Henderson's translation makes this very accessible, and it's still really damn funny. Your hosts are joined by five real actors from TV, film, and Broadway. We will be following this up in ep. 188 with a full discussion of the play and the issues it raises. We're pleased to bring you this performance without commercial interruptions. Why not respond in loving kind by tipping some pennies into the hat?
An introduction to Love Living Radio and what its all about as well as a little bit about Emily Perkins.
Movie Meltdown - Episode 431 This week we are coming to you "live" from the Lexington Comic & Toy Convention as we sit down with Doug Jones to discuss not just monsters and aliens, but also his Sofa Theater pick - Notting Hill. As well as hearing his stories about just being on-stage at the Oscars the week before with his Academy Award-winning film The Shape of Water! And while we realize that a guy with a giant moon head, is the coolest thing we’ve ever seen, we also mention… Chuck Norris, Happy Death Day, both versions of It, Daniel Moder, Nosferatu, Lovecraftian, Tanzanite circled in diamonds, Famous Monsters of Filmland, Before I Fall, being on the Academy Awards, Rhys Ifans, slasher fun, Charles Aznavour, about to go up onto the ship and talk to Steven Spielberg, McDonald's, on the world’s stage, if you’re singing to me… I don’t care how long it is, life imitated art, horses and Henry James, wearing Armani, my funny Julia Roberts story that not many people know, Emily Mortimer, she was just getting over Spinal Meningitis, that’s what you look for in a pirate, drive-thru dollar menu, Emily Perkins, one of the elder gods, Rita Hayworth, giving John Hawkes a pep talk, Downton Abbey, so I put on this grinding music… and I start stripping, inner cleanliness, Golden Globes, a guy with a gun on his side, whether you want the character build or not, how disturbingly things have changed just since 1999, Groundhog Day, I could put my legs behind my head and perpetual befuddlement. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for Notting Hill and some basic spoilers for Happy Death Day and possibly for the end of Mahogany as well. You have been warned! “But I’ve got more press this year then ever in my life… I probably have done more press and more profile pieces in like Indiewire, Buzzfeed, New York Times, LA Times… with my own face showing. So I’ve gotten more face recognition this year than in all my 30 years combined! So that’s making it a bit more crazy to walk through a crowd…” To plan your trip to the "Lexington Comic and Toy Convention", go to: http://www.lexingtoncomiccon.com/
Moderated by Emily Perkins. An acclaimed author, Jonathan Raymond is also the award-winning screenwriter behind the courageously minimalistic festival hits WENDY AND LUCY, MEEK’S CUTOFF, OLD JOY and NIGHT MOVES – on which he collaborated with revered indie director Kelly Reichardt. Jonathan also co-wrote the HBO miniseries MILDRED PIERCE, winner of five Emmy Awards, with legendary director Todd Haynes. In this conversation Emily Perkins talks to Jonathan about what risk means to him within the creative process, remaining open to new possibilities while searching for the heart of the material, and finding and investing yourself in the work while truly sharing the vision with your collaborators – in Jonathan’s case two of the boldest auteurs in independent cinema today. Jon's session took place on Sat 24th September, 11am at the Big Screen Symposium 2016 in Auckland, New Zealand. The Big Screen Symposium is New Zealand's annual premiere film event, proudly brought to you by Script to Screen and J&A Productions.
In this special edition of On the Rag, Alex talks to the powerhouse of women behind The Rehearsal, the New Zealand film based on the novel by Eleanor Catton. Alison Maclean, Emily Perkins and Kerry Fox chew over finding success as women in male-dominated industries, and why it's never okay to smack a boom boy on the bum.
