Don't forget to grab her Plantastic Cookbook also! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [5:10] Gwen shares her story and what led her to focusing on plant based cooking. [8:50] What are some simple ways to cook vegetables aside from roasting and steaming? [11:28] How can someone determine the best ways to season vegetables? [13:20] What are some vegetable combination ideas?[18:59] Gwen shares recommendations on how to make vegetables that people usually stay away from such as kale, mushrooms, and cabbage. [24:33] What are some great staples to keep in the house that are versatile and easy to use?[25:58] How else can you use quinoa, beyond as a rice substitute?[27:53] How can you identify and use jackfruit?[30:32] What are the best kitchen tools to have on hand? [32:18] How can you make family favorite recipes - especially with school lunch season coming up?[33:45] Which recipes from the Plantastic Cookbook are best for nights when you are short on time? KEY TAKEAWAYS: Play around with your food, try different spices, herbs, seasonings, etc. Try cooking them in a different way, barbecuing, steamed, roasted, etc. Experimenting will open up all kinds of possibilities for you.The recommended goal is to have at least 30 types of plants in your diet per week for great gut health. Meal prepping can make a huge difference and save you time throughout the week. Do your shopping on a weekend, wash everything, cut it up, prep it, it'll save you a lot of time during the week. QUOTES: [14:09] “When chefs are like, oh no, you have to do it this way, I'm like, no, you get to play with your food. You get to have fun, and you get to create it for yourself and anybody you're cooking for.” - Gwen Kenneally“It's really about playing...if you're not so worried about how it's going to turn out...I think sometimes we take it so seriously and we're so afraid of 'what if I don't do it right?' Well, the chocolate chip cookie was invented by mistake.” - Gwen Kenneally[30:33] “A microplane is the long grater that you can put it over a pot and grate your garlic and ginger right over it. That's a great tool. A good, sharp knife. Invest a little money in a knife because if you're chopping and prepping nothing is better than a good knife.” - Gwen Kenneally [33:04] “I mean we used to get a sandwich, a carrot and an apple, but I think if you do lots more little portions of lots of different things, you'll get them to start eating and trying more and if their friends are eating it, that's the best.” - Gwen Kenneally"There's 0 evidence that 100% of people would benefit from a plant-based diet but there IS OVERWHELMING evidence that 100% of people would benefit from adding more plants to their diet. Hopefully today we made that a bit easier for you." - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESBack to the Kitchen Catering WebsiteThe Plantastic Cookbook GoodreadsGwen Kenneally's InstagramGUEST BIOGwen Kenneally is a Hollywood caterer, highly acclaimed chef and food enthusiast with over 20 years of culinary experience. Paedophile Bill Kenneally is serving an 18-year sentence for the sexual abuse of 15 young boys in Waterford in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.But it took until 2016, decades after the abuse occurred, for the former basketball coach to be sentenced for those crimes. That's despite first coming to Garda attention in the mid-1980s when a brave young boy went into the Garda station on his own to report the abuse. So why did it take so long for him to be brought to justice? Who knew what and when?An official inquiry was set up in 2018 to answer those questions. Last week, for the first time, Kenneally, 73, was called to give evidence and he showed himself to be unrepentant. For his brave victims who again had to face their abuser, it was yet another difficult chapter in their ongoing search for answers.Irish Times reporter Ronan McGreevy was at the hearing. This week we have the wonderful Dr Sue Kenneally with us, the weight management specialist!A General Practitioner, nutritionist and co-founder of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr Sue sits on the board of Plant Based Health Professionals UK and is SCOPE certified in obesity management, working with the University of South Wales in the study of weight management. We have known Sue for years, having first met her at The Plant-based Doctor Conference in London where we connected immediately. Aside from her qualifications, Sue's deep understanding of the difficulties of weight management comes from her own personal experience as well as her empathetic nature, “I am not naturally slim myself, I have to work hard to maintain my own weight, and I know that the challenge is real!”After our first encounter in London, we kept up our friendship which eventually blossomed into The Happy Shape Course! A 4 week course where along with Dietician, Rosie Martin, and PT, Zanna Van Dijk, the five of us take on what it truly means to have a happy shape, through education, movement, sleep, food, nutrition, community and most importantly having fun! We debunk the myths, ensure you are never hungry or lacking in delicious food and connect you with a group of like minded people so you forever feel supported.“Getting someone to change their relationship with food is like getting someone to change their relationship with any addictive substance. The only difference is, if I am dealing with a heroin addict I can tell them to stop taking heroin and support them to do that, but I can't tell someone who is addicted to food to stop eating…”In this episode, Dr Sue takes us through the most common mistakes people make for weight management, the differences between men and women, why calorie counting is pointless, and practical tips you can apply now.A great episode! Enjoy!Lots of Love,Dave & Steve xThis May 30th join us on The Happy Shape Challenge! One month, where we all begin together, guided by Dave, Steve, Dr Sue and Rosie through constant live Q&A's. Ghosts of Campaigns past have returned to scare Australian voters before the May 21 federal poll. Jacinda finally leaves fortress NZ after two years for Japan. Join Tim Wilms and Stephen Berry live tonight at 6pm Melbourne time and 8pm Auckland time for Trad Tasman Talk. Stephen has relaunched his Mr Berry Mr Berry show after being fired from Officewokes after some co-workers were triggered and offended by his final episode. Victoria, NSW, and the ACT have eased close contact isolation rules with other states set to follow. In Victoria retail and hospitality workers, and primary schools students no longer have to wear masks. Vaccine passports and QR codes also end but worker vaccine mandates remain. NZ has also ended its vaccine passport system though there are still some businesses that are voluntarily enforcing them. Labor leader Anthony Albanese has tested positive for covid so will be in isolation for 7 days. Despite Albo's stumbles Labor is ahead in the Mr Berry poll of polls though he did perform well in the Sky News people's forums. Liberal candidate for Warringah Katherine Deves continues to have her controversial transgender comments on her old social media reported almost daily by the mainstream media. She has apologized for suggesting that 50% of trans-identifying biological males were sex offenders and there was a link between transvestism and serial killers. Labor's Kristina Kenneally's parachuted move to the lower house isn't a guarantee with Deputy Mayor of Fairfield Dai Li running for the seat of Folwer as an independent. Kenneally attempted this week to sell Labor's new Mediscare style campaign claiming that the Coalition plans to put pensioners on the cashless debit welfare card, the ABC fact check debunked this claim with an 'election scare alert'. Pacific Islands Minister Zed Seselja traveled to the Solomon Islands in a last-ditch attempt to stop the nation's Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare from signing a security pact with China. Foreign Minister Marise Payne corrected Seselja that the government did know about the pact before it was leaked on social media. Defence Minister Peter Dutton has hit out at Deputy Labor Leader Richard Marles for a book chapter he wrote stating that Pacific Islands could enter into any agreement with China they wanted to. Jacinda Ardern is on her first international trip since she closed the borders in March 2020 to Japan. She was greeted by the dancing Zespri kiwifruit brothers. We round out the show by looking at the polling for the French Presidential election runoff where Emmanuel Macron is against up against nationalist Marine Le Pen. "I think that's a great point and that's something I'm thinking a lot about right now is that at some point, and it's probably now or soon for ECD, you tip the scales and you're no longer the disruptor or the person coming up but you're now the incumbent. And we're probably leaning more towards being an incumbent than we are a disruptor these days and that's somewhere I really don't want to go into. When we started, it sucked. But once I started noticing small little things shifting, I did not want to go back. ~ Jacob Kenneally How many New Year's resolutions have you made over the years? And how many resolutions have you stuck with for more than a month?  If you're like most of us (and admit it, you are), you decide you're going to do something every New Year that's going to change your life for the better. You start with energy and swear this year will be different, only to ditch the whole thing and beat yourself up–AGAIN. This week's guest, our friend, website guru and re-made man, Jacob Kenneally, actually stuck with his resolution to change his mindset and his life, reinventing himself and becoming the inspirational, positive, faith-filled guy he is today. The key? Jacob knew that early on, the effort it would take to remake his life would, well, suck. He knew it, he acknowledged it, and he decided, especially once he saw small changes happening, that he was worth it. Most of us believe big challenges require big solutions, and we expect the changes for the better to be as dramatic as the challenge. It just doesn't work that way. Big changes are made with baby steps–consistently applied, even if they suck. If this is the year you want to see big changes, be willing to do the hard work and push through the suck until you start to see those small changes. The big stuff is right behind, and you're so worth it.  Tune in to hear more from our Brilliantly Resilient buddy Jacob on this week's episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast, and visit Jacob at www.jacobkenneally.com! 94. Dave Kenneally: The Common Misconception About Mindfulness Meditation

Technology For Mindfulness

Many people believe that mindfulness meditation is about stopping thoughts from popping into our heads, which is, needless to say, impossible. As they can't prevent themselves from having thoughts, that belief makes them stop trying mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is not about preventing our minds from having thoughts but being aware of them. And being aware of those thoughts is different from knowing we have them; the difference might seem subtle but is massive. Today, my guest is the mindfulness teacher, Brother Dave Kenneally, former Sargeant in the US Marine Corps and former Buddhist Monk in the Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh tradition. He travels the world spreading his knowledge, teaching business leaders, yoga instructors, cancer patients and their families, teens, and military veterans, among many others. He is a Certified Teacher of the Search Inside Yourself Program and an Ordained member of the Order of Interbeing. We had a joyful conversation about his mentors and their teachings along his journey and how they impacted him, the meaning of mindfulness, and the gifts the Zen tradition has to offer. He explained the concept of "understanding is love," and he also talked about why he decided to become a monk. Tune in to Episode 93 of Technology for Mindfulness and listen to Dave's fascinating story about love, reaching mindfulness, and awareness. Some Questions I Ask: What's your story and how did you get started with mindfulness? (5:23)Can you talk about where gentleness and self-compassion fit your own development and in your own teaching? (12:34)You've been talking primarily about attitudes towards yourself, your own feelings, your own thoughts, and cultivating it from that direction. If I'd like to be more compassionate, how do I just go ahead? (18:08)Is there anything you can share about how you've been able to bring your own mindfulness practices to bear on this extremely challenging time? (22:23)In This Episode, You Will Learn:Dave's definition of mindfulness (6:03)Yoga as a raw concentration practice (10:48)Understanding is love (13:32)One of the Zen practice's gifts (19:00)The consequences of being at war with our thoughts (31:50)Resources:Dave Kenneally websiteConnect with Dave:LinkedInFacebookInstagramYouTubeConnect with Robert Plotkin:Technology For Mindfulness WebsiteBlueshift IP WebsiteLinkedIn See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Phillip Parker King, at the age of 25, was appointed to complete the exploration of the ‘Coast of New Holland’ started by the famed Captain Matthew Flinders and create accurate charts to guide ships safely through the dangerous waters. In 1820, Lieutenant Phillip Parker King’s survey vessel, His Majesty’s cutter Mermaid, careened in a sheltered bay on the north-west Kimberley coast and the ship’s carpenter inscribed ‘HMC MERMAID 1820’ on a large boab tree. Two hundred years later, the significance of Careening Bay to Western Australia’s science and conservation history and the role of Indigenous crew members, is being recognised and honoured. Professor Kevin Kenneally from the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment joined us on “Remember When” to tell us about this fascinating story. As Paradise Falls went from the precipice of world domination to the cusp of oblivion only a few years back. After the resounding success of Digital Ritual, the band succumbed to lingering doubt and sorrow following the tragic death of guitarist Glen Barrie in 2015.With members still struggling to come to terms with the loss the band lost its strength in unity, with Danny Kenneally (guitarist) being left as the sole remaining member to carry the name, and music, forward.Thankfully, Kenneally maintained his self-belief and determination and forged forward, assembling a new line-up with some old faces to continue the legacy of one of this countries rising death metal forces. After over two years of silence from As Paradise Falls the band are back with a crushing vengeance, releasing the brutally chaotic "Bleed For The Crown" this week."The song was started getting written a couple of years ago," Kenneally explained, "and we were going through a bit of drama at the time, that's when we did a member switch up of sorts. Sean parted ways and Christian and John needed time out which just left me, which was cool. It was all mutual and they are amazing dudes and they had to do what they had to do. I went through a period of six to twelve months not knowing what was going on but at the end of that I came out with this song that became "Bleed For The Crown". Lo and behold Ravi hit me up and said he wanted to come back because hewanted to be a part of it again se we decided to go for it. I showed him the song and he loved it. We demoed that at my place and a few others as well and went for it."In the full interview, Danny discusses the song musically, reveals details of the guest video appearance by Izzy Voodoo, tells plans of the next single including the name of the track, goes into more depth about the last couple of years, vocalist Ravi Sherwell returning to the band and more.

All 8 books are set in the world of Hundred Oaks The books are companions, not a series All the books feature strong female main characters who blow stereotypes out of the water She asks bold questions through her characters and embraces the messiness of life and people BOOK-ISH All Miranda Kenneally’s books are fantastic discussion starters and cover a variety of hot-topic issues. I’ve listed all of her books, including a short description and a list of the issues that come up in each.   Catching Jordan This first book in the Hundred Oaks books is about Jordan Woods, the daughter of an NFL pro football player. Jordan quarterbacks for her high school football team and her Dad isn’t super happy about it. Up until now, she’s not really dated, so when she’s attracted to the new guy who shows up and makes the team – also as a quarterback – she’s faced with lots of emotions. Issues in Catching Jordan: Athletic Pressure Dating relationships Dreams and Goals Friendship Future Plans Identity Parent/teen relationships Sexual activity Sexism   Stealing Parker In the next book, Parker Shelton is a star student and softball player. Her life seems perfect until her mom leaves her dad for another woman, and she’s completely shunned at school and at their church. Acting out, she quits the softball team and starts dating (and messing around with) lots of boys. Because the last thing she wants people to think is that she’s like her mom. Her infatuation with the new softball coach – a young, just-graduated-from-college guy who used to go to her high school – isn’t helping matters. Issues in Stealing Parker: Dating Relationships Friendship Identity Parent/teen relationships Sexual activity Sexual orientation Teacher/student relationships   Things I Can’t Forget In the third Hundred Oaks book, Kate Kelly is grappling with her faith and her identity. A self-described “good girl,” she’s spending the summer as a church camp counselor, and it’s not going as planned. She is very clearly a people-pleaser – she struggles a lot with wanting to make sure she doesn’t sound “mean” – and she’s terrified that the people around her will find out her terrible secret – that she helped her best friend get an abortion a few weeks ago. Over the course of the summer, she begins to see that what she thinks of herself matters most of all. Issues in Things I Can’t Forget: Abortion Dating Relationships Faith Friendship Identity Parent/Teen Relationships Sexual Activity Teen Pregnancy   Racing Savannah In Kenneally’s fourth book, Savannah Barrow tries to fit into a new community when her father moves them to Hundred Oaks at the beginning of her senior year. They moved so he could take a better job as the head racehorse trainer on the estate of a wealthy family. Savannah dreams of becoming a horse jockey, but her father is dead set against it. Throw in the teenaged son of the wealthy family, Savannah’s over-protective Dad, and all the drama of being the new girl and you have the story of a girl who must figure out who she is and what she wants. Issues in Racing Savannah: Dating Relationships Gender Discrimination Identity Parent/Teen Relationships Socio-Economic Differences Stereotypes   Breathe, Annie, Breathe In the next book, we meet Annie Winters, a teen who is training for a marathon – even though she HATES running. As we watch her train, we discover she’s doing it because her boyfriend, Kyle, can’t – because he recently died. And she feels responsible. As Annie runs with her training group, she works through her grief and guilt and figures out how to move on without Kyle, and step back into life. (Also, Jordan Woods shows up in this book as a coach at Hundred Oaks HS.) Issues in Breathe, Annie, Breathe: Dating Relationships Forgiveness Grief and Loss Guilt Parent/Teen Relationships Perseverance   Jesse’s Girl In the sixth Hundred Oaks book, Maya Henry gets to shadow country music star, Jesse Scott, for career day at school. (Maya is Sam Henry’s little sister, btw! He’s a main character in Catching Jordan.) They do not get off on the right foot, and Maya isn’t sure she can learn anything from the arrogant, jaded musician – especially since she hates country music. But as they spend time together, her dreams of becoming a professional start to flutter back to life. Issues in Jesse’s Girl: Dating Relationships Dreams and Goals Friendship Future Plans Identity Teacher/Student Relationships   Defending Taylor In this book, Kenneally introduces us to Taylor Lukens, the daughter of a Tennessee senator, whose life is falling apart. She’s been kicked out of a private school she adored, thrown off her soccer team, and lost her chance to be the valedictorian – all for something she didn’t do. As she bears the brunt of her parents’ disappointment and makes the transition to a public school, she has to figure out if lying for her boyfriend was worth it. Issues in Defending Taylor: Academic Pressure Choices Friendship Identity Lying Parent/Teen Relationships Sacrifice Sibling Relationships Socio-Economic Differences Transition   Coming Up for Air In the final Hundred Oaks novel, Maggie King eats, breathes, sleeps and lives swimming. When she takes a break from Olympic qualification training to visit a college, she realizes all the “typical high school” things she’s missed out on. Now it’s game on as she tries to fit everything into her senior year, from juggling her new experiences, to the pressure to succeed in swimming, to her changing relationship with her best friend, Levi.  (Jordan Woods is in this one as a coach/teacher.) Issues in Coming Up for Air: Athletic Pressure Competition Dating Relationships Friendship Identity Rivalry Sexual Activity

We listen to Sharon Jones sing her funk version of "This Land Is Your Land." Then former nun (who is now a "none") Marion Kenneally describes her 16-year life in a convent before she became an atheist. Her fascinating new book is One Nun's Odyssey: A Memoir.

Interested in purchasing individual stocks? Listener Patrick Kenneally teaches us how to research stocks. Patrick had his first taste of investing while in college where he was part of Huntington 360, the student-run group that invested a portion of the school’s endowment in mutual funds. There are some tools that Patrick recommends, the first is an SEC site that will give you any publicly traded company’s quarterly filings.  The next is from Business Week which provides financial statements as well as ratio calculations. Aside from hard numbers, it’s also important to consider emotions that could be inflating or deflating a stock price.  Several months ago a Tesla car caught fire and affected the stock price.  Conventional cars catch fire too but as Teslas are new, this was suddenly considered a safety issue specific to them. Another important consideration when buying single stocks is your familiarity with the company’s products.  If you are researching something you have no knowledge of, you won’t understand the data you are finding. If mutual funds are more your thing, Morningstar’s compare tool is a good starting point for your research. Loyal3 is a site geared towards beginners in the stock market that allows you to make small volume trades for no fee.  Robin Hood is a similar site that is not live yet but  poised to shake up the big investment banks. Thanks to Patrick for spending some time with us and teaching us all how to be more like him and Andrew! Show Notes Morningstar:  They’re mutual fund comparison page.
