In October 2001, the dismembered remains of seventy-one-year-old Morris Black were found floating in Galveston Bay. A few days later, Black's neighbor, Robert Durst, was arrested on suspicion of murder and released on $250,000 bail. After posting bail, Durst jumped bail and disappeared for six weeks, before being arrested by Pennsylvania authorities at the end of November. In the years that followed, investigators and prosecutors began combing through Durst's life, discovering disturbing connections between the excentric millionaire and the mysterious disappearances and deaths of several people who were once close to Durst. Robert Durst had been a suspect in the murder of Morris Black, but was it possible he was in fact a multiple murderer who'd evaded detection for decades?Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 2001. Kevin Moran, a famous figure from United's past, joined Helen Evans and David May to discuss his career on our latest UTD Podcast. The Irish centre-back was with May at Blackburn Rovers late in his career but only after starting two FA Cup finals with United in the 1980s, as we lifted the cup by beating Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton. Unfortunately, Kevin was the first man ever to be sent off in the showpiece event, for a foul on Everton's Peter Reid in 1985. Ron Atkinson's 10 men still won, thanks to Norman Whiteside's iconic goal, and, of course, Moran recalls that day and answers the question of whether he ever received his medal.Growing up, he played hurling and Gaelic football in his homeland, which could have derailed his United career before it had started, as he would secretly play in some high-profile games in the Republic of Ireland, without the club's knowledge! He even reveals he turned the Reds down when they first came calling!A late starter, he only got into football at 14, his commitment and bravery would become legendary with United's gamble on him paying off. Atkinson replacing Dave Sexton at the helm made a difference in terms of his fight for a first-team place, but his time at Old Trafford came to an end after Sir Alex Ferguson's arrival, which he discusses in detail as the Scot tried to rid the club of its drinking culture.A move to Sporting Gijon in Spain showed his sense of adventure and he would remain a stalwart for Republic of Ireland, being part of Jack Charlton's famous 1990 World Cup side and even making the squad four years later, as he ended up on 71 caps.Kevin tells us more about his interesting career path after retirement and is still a season ticket-holder at Old Trafford. This your chance to hear his story in full! The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. I have added more information in the show notes.   “How to expand a brand internationally” Are you selling or developing?  What is your purpose? Grow locally to build brand recognition.  The key to successful brand marketing is tapping into existing loyal customers. Understand the propensity of the country to take your product.  In other words, know your market.  Beef products are not going to succeed in India because the cow is a sacred animal.   Seek differentiators i.e., what will make your brand stand out among other similar brands in the market. Determine where and how you are going to source products.  Must also consider volumes and cost. Tariffs Importation taxes Transportation of goods Storage Evaluate purchasing power based on COGs and competitive menu pricing Menu flexibility – core vs. country.  How much does the menu change based on local flavor preferences? How big or small can your footprint be to allow for equipment and prep space? Real-estate costs Lease terms Traffic patterns (accessibility or customer count required to break even or grow) Understand the labor market and your current labor model. Create mock P&Ls to determine if the model is feasible. Consider franchising with an established international franchisor because they have already done this work and have the support in space to ensure a successful market launch. Legal costs associated with compliance, trademarks, disclosures, etc.  Each country has different rules. Don't let your emotions override the math.  Your personal passion for a brand does not indicate its success.  TEST, TEST, and TEST again. Collect the data necessary to make an informed decision. Don't think that you'll “figure it out later.” AWESOME video on differentiation - https://vimeo.com/644948109/6b3d99c76c   About me and my mission and podcast: Are you looking for a fun and light-hearted podcast to discover unique brands and learn about the people and strategies successful companies are implementing in the CPG and Food and Beverage Industry?  The brands featured here take us into the world of innovation, sustainability, good for you, lifestyle, QSR, Foodservice, Distribution, DTC, Club, and more. I am a fun-loving business leader, podcaster, husband, dad, cyclist, and Convention of States volunteer in my spare time. Winning two national championships in his four years, he went on to play professional hockey, signing with the New Jersey Devils and the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Matt Lombardi  | Cofounder & Co-Owner   Matt Lombardi grew up in the greater Boston area, aspiring to one day play for the Boston College hockey team. Lombardi achieved this goal, becoming a standout player contributing to the team's 2008 and 2010 national championship wins. After graduating from the Carroll School of Management with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, Lombardi went on to play professional hockey with the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins organizations. Lombardi later moved away from professional sports and into the world of entrepreneurship but continues to be passionate about pushing his limits athletically and professionally. While training for the 2018 Boston Marathon with fellow former professional athlete, Kevin Moran, the two friends felt the effects of old injuries while striving to perform at their best. Searching for a remedy, Moran and Lombardi looked to CBD products but were dismayed at what they found - an unregulated marketplace full of products with trace amounts of THC and other unlisted toxic additives. Rather than turning away from the industry, this experience inspired Moran and Lombardi to create Beam. Beam offers effective wellness products that harness the benefits of natural, non-toxic nano CBD and other high-quality ingredients, empowering others to push their limits and pursue their passions by improving their physical and mental wellness.  Kevin Moran  | Cofounder & Co-Owner   Growing up in Barnstable, Massachusetts, Kevin Moran dreamed of one day playing in the MLB. In 2010, during his junior year at Boston College, this dream became a reality when Moran was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. After enduring numerous injuries, Moran decided to retire from professional baseball and return to Boston College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Management. Post-graduation, Moran excelled  in his tech industry career while challenging himself to new athletic pursuits. They watched the CBD industry grow and wondered how they could get involved. And as frequent users of the cannabinoid to treat their own ailments, they were big believers that they could build a brand that felt accessible, bright, and fun. On our show today, we're talking to a really special guest that I had an absolutely amazing time talking with. Today we're talking with Matt Lombardi. Matt Lombardi grew up in the greater Boston area and attended Boston College, where he was fortunate enough to play hockey throughout his tenure. As a talented player competing with some of the best teams, Lombardi won the national championship his sophomore and senior year. Lombardi attended the Carroll School of Management, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing in 2010. Lombardi pursued a professional hockey career and went on to play in the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins organizations. Given that hockey is one of the only sports I actually enjoy watching, the fact that he played for the Penguins is preeeetty freaking cool. After a bad concussion his last year playing professional hockey, Lombardi decided to take on a different career path, moving into the tech field. His first job outside of the sports arena was an inbound sales desk at Eaton Vance, and since then has been a serial entrepreneur in the tech space becoming the Co-Founder of a startup called DRIVN Coaching Platform, and most recently CEO & Co-Founder of Grander Inc. Despite the injuries and concussions from his professional hockey career, Lombardi has always had a passion for sports and living an active lifestyle. In 2018, Lombardi was preparing for The Boston Marathon with his long-time friend, another former professional athlete named Kevin Moran. The two trained rigorously to compete while also balancing the stresses of work and life in general. Through their training they felt the effects of old injuries and wondered if there was a way to remedy their ailments with products that lived up to their own wellness standards. It was in this training where Matt and Kevin came together to build a company founded under one common mission: helping high performing athletes AND everyday people live happy, healthy, and whole. That's where BEAM comes in. On today's show, I did a deep dive with Matt on the parallels between high-level athletics and entrepreneurship, building a brand on the foundation of focusing on PEOPLE first, and the routines and habits that help him live happy, healthy, whole, AND keep him moving forward in as a business owner. Talking with Matt truly gave me such hope for the future of companies and of wellness. Seeing how he leads with heart, humility, and health was truly refreshing, and no matter what journey you're on, I know this episode will help inspire you on your own journey to living your own happy, healthy, whole life. Born from the aches and pains that come with the territory for every professional athlete, Beam was co-founded by Matt Lombardi and Kevin Moran. As avid crossfit competitors, ironman triathletes, marathoners, the two decided to search high and low for an all-natural remedy that met their personal wellness standards. Their choice? CBD. In this conversation, Matt and Kevin go in-depth on what they call the “Beam 4”—the four pillars of health embodied by the Beam brand. These are balance, performance, recovery, and sleep. The Beam 4 was conceived out of the desire to cater to the needs of both professional athletes and the general wellness consumer. Listen in as Matt and Kevin explain how they developed Beam's current lineup of products. Some of the topics we cover include how they collect and interpret data, both quantitatively and qualitatively, to improve the efficacy of Beam's sleep product, dream; how the focus, elevate, and clarity, products boost your energy without the crash; and why they decided to separate “recovery” and “sleep” into two different categories.   Follow beam @beam Follow Chase @chase_chewning   Episode resources: Save up to 20% on the best night's sleep of your life with Chili Sleep at https://www.chilisleep.com/ChaseChewning Learn more at https://chasechewning.com/podcasts/episode/484

Matt Lombardi & Kevin Moran, professional athlete-turned-entrepreneurs and founders of beam, the “Nike of Wellness” offering the highest-quality THC-free CBD products for a wellness minded community. Matt (New Jersey Devils hockey player) & Kevin (Chicago White Sox baseball player) conceptualized beam while training together for the Boston Marathon in 2018; after pushing their bodies for years of playing competitive sports, they ardently searched for a natural remedy to treat their chronic aches and pains. With this, they were introduced to CBD and captivated by the several use cases and effects such as reduced inflammation, pain, anxiety and promotion of better sleep and energy. After struggling to find a product that held to their standards, they decided to create their own with an adherence to transparency that includes a high quality, effective product assortment that has proven to be a hit amongst consumers and world renowned professional athletes such as Baker Mayfield, Mat Fraser, Brooke Wells, Danica Patrick and Billy Horschel.

You see, both Matt and Kevin were professional athletes, and though there many rewarding aspects to that achievement, it is not without its drawbacks; namely the physical toll it takes on one’s body. When the two of them concluded their professional careers, the CBD market was still in its infancy. But Matt and Kevin were quick to see the potential for CBD in both overall wellness and market growth potential. Looking back on their decision to start a CBD company, it seems like a no brainer. But as you’ll learn in this conversation, it has been far from easy. Listen in as we cover everything from busting all the myths and misconceptions about CBD, the trouble with opening a bank account for their business, and why they decided to shun the THC market.

If you're like many people, you're probably curious about the recent explosion of CBD products inundating the market place. The human body's innate cannabinoid system helps regulate many functions including appetite, mood, sleep and pain. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psycho-active component of the hemp plant that interacts with the body's receptors to help promote sleep and suppress pain - both of which are important during the post-exercise recovery process.  Matt Lombardi and Kevin Moran both played division 1 college hockey and baseball, respectfully, and each spent time at the professional level. Fast forward a few years and now they enjoy challenging themselves with marathons, triathlons and high-intensity workouts. While training for the Boston Marathon, Matt and Kevin learned about the benefits of CBD and as a result started BEAM, a company that makes a variety of CBD products to support recovery from exercise. This episode of All About Fitness is All About CBD as Matt and Kevin explain the benefits of CBD, how it can help support the body's response to exercise and the challenges of starting a brand in a completely new product category. Bronwyn speaks to Kevin Moran from Save Our Springs about Te Waikoropupū Springs which are currently the subject of a Water Conservation Order being challenged in the Environment Court. Located close to Takaka in Golden Bay, these freshwater springs are the largest in New Zealand and contain some of the clearest water found in the world. The iconic blue-tinted waters are recognised as a wāhi tapu by the Māori Heritage Council and are of great cultural and spiritual significance to local iwi Ngāti Tama, Te Ātiawa and Ngāti Rarua. In 2017, Ngāti Tama and Andrew Yuill applied for a Water Conservation Order, however the special tribunal's recommendatory report was not published until the 17th of March this year. In response, ten parties have lodged further proceedings in the Environment Court, some believing the tribunal's report was too strict and others, not restrictive enough. Save Our Springs is among those appearing in court later this year, calling for improvements to the draft order.

Matt went from winning two NCAA Division I Hockey championships at Boston College, to a brief professional career in the NHL’s minor leagues, to becoming a passionate entrepreneur. Matt shared his experiences playing hockey at BC and how discipline and practice played a massive role in his personal growth. The lessons he learned from his athletic career have helped shape everything that came after. “Sports are the ultimate life metaphor. You learn how to be a part of a team, work towards goals, and leadership.” After suffering a severe concussion while playing for a Pittsburgh Penguins minor league affiliate, Matt left hockey, but took his personal drive and enthusiasm with him to launch a career in business. In 2014, he co-founded DRIVN, a virtual coaching platform that became an essential tool for college hockey teams. However, Matt’s involvement with the venture ended when he had a falling-out with his partner and co-founder. “I was still learning how to be a communicator,” He told Bill and Chris. In 2016 Matt co-founded Grander, another platform for athletes and coaches. Two years later, Matt partnered with his friend and fellow former BC athlete, Kevin Moran, to start beam. Matt shared his experience as an athlete struggling to find natural pain relief treatments. “We saw an opportunity to reimagine the CBD space by creating a more wellness-focused brand.” beam’s uniquely transparent and holistic approach to CBD helped Matt and Kevin raise $5 million this past fall.

Matt Lombardi and Kevin Moran are no strangers to the sport and fitness industry. They both played professional sports, Matt pitching for the Chicago White Sox and Kevin as a center forward for the Pittsburgh Penguins. As you can imagine, they followed a rigorous training schedule for many years. As a result, they looked for natural supplements that would help them recover from soreness and periodic injuries. Like most great business ideas, they then noticed a gap in the market and wanted to fix it. At this point Beam was born. There was a lack of clean, effective CBD products that felt safe and effective. You might be wondering what CBD is, or even assuming it is just marijuana. I’ll admit, it took me a while to fully understand, but what I know now is that CBD stands for cannabidiol—which is a naturally occurring essential oil extracted from the hemp plant - it works to regulate pain, mood, appetite, anxiety, and inflammation. They have now captured the attention of elite athletes and the recreationalists, alike. https://beamtlc.com/

A Pittsfield native, MacGillis covers politics and government for ProPublica, a non-profit online investigative journalism organization. Where has the time gone? It's been one year since the Strange Wolves entered the podcast studio for the first time, raw and naive, before the fires of podcasting forged them into the steely veterans they have now become. In this one year anniversary special, Vinny Connolly, Marcus Fields, #ChrisFlynn and regular contributor John 'The Baptist' Burke tackle the latest news from the world of MMA. The UFC XBox game is still up for grabs over at https://twitter.com/StrangeWolves . Get on it. In Chris' last top five until the end of his French sabbatical, he picks his favourite quotes from Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. Some serious zingers in there! The crew are split 50/50 on the winner of that rematch. Was Chael Sonnen the original McGregor? Vinny has a look back at some of Chael's outrageous quips over the years. After a bit of a lull, the beef with Team Alpha Male is back in full swing, with Urijah Faber's wife-beater coming in for an unmerciful slagging. The panel debate the new UFC rules, and wonder if soccer kicks to a downed opponent would bring anything good to the sport. Poor Dominick Cruz's downwards spiral since his knee injury draws some sympathy. Travis Barker won't return his calls! The UFC 202 card gets an extended preview, with some big fights like McGregor - Diaz 2, Rumble Johnson vs Glover Teixiera and Donald Cerrone vs Rick 'The Horror' Story. Amir Khan is still talking up a possible MMA career. He must have missed last month's Strange Wolves Podcast, suggesting that he just gives up on that pipe dream. The letter from the Irish Martial Art's Council to the Irish Olympic Committee is the subject of lively debate, with Vinny playing devil's advocate. This House opposes the motion that MMA is "Pornographic, sadistic and voyeuristic to its core". The Olympic Committee gets a bit of a savaging for their corruption. #NoOlympicsForMMA This month's extended discussion concerning taking advice in the gym, and whether or not it should be ignored. That's it for this month. If anyone has seen Tom Hogan, tell there's a spot open for him again. Either that, or Kevin Moran or Gary Mannion will have to make another appearance. Nobody wants that.

Strange Wolves MMA Podcast

The boys welcome fighter, coach, referee and globe trotter Kevin 'Sex Tornado' Moran to the podcast to replace the mysteriously absent (and presumed kidnapped) Tom Hogan. Kevin brings a wealth of experience, controversy* and sweat to the team. It's fair to say, Tom will have to up his game to win his spot back on the podcast. Chris Flynn's top five this month concerns the (gender-neutral) sexiest MMA fighters. No prizes for guessing the number one spot, avid listeners! Marcus Fields attempts to start beef with fellow Sligo native JB Yeats, while defending the other son of the county, Kian Egan. Vinny does some more name dropping from his time in Thailand. With Jon Jones living a quiet life these day, 'Jon Jones Watch' recreates a classic confrontation, examining the origins of the conflict between Jones and fierce rival Daniel Cormier. Kevin makes some accusations about BJ Penn, Georges Saint Pierre, and anyone else he can think of. Paige Van Zandt's Dancing With The Stars performances are analysed by the experts. Michael Bisping comes in for some harsh criticism for his acting skills, his knock-out power (or lack of it) before his upcoming title shot again Luke Rockhold. The rumours of a massive boxing vs MMA superfight between Conor McGregor vs Floyd 'Money' Mayweather are discussed. Kevin tells the tale of his travels to train with some of the world's best in New York, and savages CM Punk's prospects of a UFC debut. In Irish MMA news, the Irish Amateur Pankration association, which may become the governing body of Irish MMA comes up for debate. *Please note, Kevin Moran's opinions are his own and in no way reflect the general opinions of the Strange Wolves podcast.
