On this episode of The Fresh Start Family Show, Wendy chats with the funny and insightful Kirk Martin, founder of Celebrate Calm and host of the Calm Parenting podcast. They explore 3 tools we can use to help de-escalate situations with our strong-willed kids when they're upset that are effective and actually create closeness when parenting a strong-willed kiddo: Self-Regulation: We must control our own emotions first before we address the child. The quickest way to change your child's behavior is to first control your own. Movement: Motion changes emotion. Sometimes talking makes kids more upset. Use movement to help calm an upset child. Connection: Relationships change behavior. Staying connected, especially during discipline creates trust & safety, which kids NEED in order to learn effective self-regulation. Strong-willed kids are incredible, AND they can often be misunderstood. This episode gives us a fresh and empowered perspective on these kiddos and how to support their big feelings. When I discovered hygge at the beginning of my minimalism journey, I was intrigued by this cozy and intentional practice. After re-discovering the art of creating a hygge home, I began implementing these changes. What amazed me was how this helped me to become a calmer parent and my kids seemed less stimulated too. I hope that these small environmental changes help you to create a safe and cozy space for your children grow!
One of the key principles of The Calm Empowered Parent podcast is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, and this episode embodies that principle by exemplifying one big-hearted mama's commitment to discovering the most effective parenting style. Vanessa sits down with client Tiffany Eng to talk through her parenting journey and how she has discovered the most effective parenting style by embracing being calm in high-emotion situations, fighting back against outside pressures to do things counter to what she intuits her child needs, all while extending empathy towards herself. You will get a personal look at how Vanessa walks parents through tricky situations and common challenges with their children with tenacity, vision, and commitment. You'll also learn how you can adapt these strategies and tools to your child and their developmental stage's needs and goals. Here are the Topics We Covered in Discovering the Most Effective Parenting Style. Learning what we as parents need to calm down in a high-emotion situation and to extend empathy towards ourselves as we do for others. How to respond powerfully to outside pressures by pushing back with the tenacity, vision, and commitment to what you know works best for you and your child. Using the ‘previewing tool' to help your child feel prepared, set expectations, and give them some autonomy and control over the situation Adapting our expectations and strategies based on the developmental stages of our children. The parenting journey is a tough one. You can feel like you are losing your temper and loosing your mind. Today's episode offers blunt and relatable advise on how to calm our own parenting fears, discipline our children my modeling and offering a deep connection. Today's episodes tackles topics like: boundaries vs worthiness demanding respect vs demonstrating respect "Discipline isn't something you do to children, It's something you develop within them." Dr. Becky A. Bailey Show take aways: Don't deprive someone else the privilege and joy of helping you. It's ok to ask for help. One of the greatest gifts you can give your kids (or loved ones) is doing something for yourself. You can't demand respect, but you can demonstrate self respect. Deal with your fear of rejection, use this phrase "Of course, my preference is valuable". If you don't care enough about yourself, they why would anyone else care about you. Humble yourself. Humility is a powerful tool with a strong willed child. Try having a difficult/great discussion in the car, sitting side by side. Use real life conflict to get to the root of the issue. Goal: I want to teach my kids, that when their world is out of control...mine is not. I can deal with you at your worst, and you can trust me. Formula for offering "perspective" to our kids: plant a seed give space offer support Please Check out CelebrateCalm.com to find more of Kirks offerings. He has a great package deal! Kirk Martin is host of the popular Calm Parenting Podcast where he shares wisdom and practical advice on dealing with "a strong-willed child who doesn't respond to consequences, argues like an attorney, and refuses to do things your way." Kirk Martin has given over 1,00,000 parents and teachers around the world practical, life-changing strategies to stop power struggles, yelling, and defiance today. Based on work with 1,500 challenging kids (many with AD/HD, OCD, ODD, ASD, etc.) in his home, and years spent in classrooms, Kirk's approach is refreshingly practical, honest, and laugh-out-loud funny! In this episode, we focus on normalizing anxiety (we all experience it at times!), having courage to trust your own instinct, the power of fresh air to change moods, and watching closely the arbitrary stuff we ask of kids. There's a lot in this one... even a bonus segment at the very end (a first!)
