The solos overload our pullboxes and hearts at the same time. 3K's X-Men get told what's up by Scott and then respond in kind. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week we are joined by Scott Koblish who has done just about every job imaginable in the comics industry, although fans of this podcast likely know him as the artist for Deadpool, X-Men '92 and those amazing 60th anniversary of the X-Men covers. We talk about the first comic he ever read - Uncanny X-Men 138 - which is a perfect onramp for anyone wanting to know about the 1960s/1970s X-Men. Also in this episode: Cyclops can fit his life inside a small laundry bag the funeral of Jean Grey! Cyclops longs to be as emotionless as Cerebro Colossus is necessary...for standing in the background or being in the foreground if you need to punch someone the classic moment where Cyclops convinces all of the Sentinels to go fight the sun Kitty Pryde shows up to the first day of school in a b*tch t-shirt What does any of this mean for Scott's future? Well, this episode is one part X-Men Horoscope, one part insider look at how the comics industry works. Tune in for more! Scott Koblish is an American Comic-book Artist who has worked on hundreds of comics for Marvel, Disney, Image, Dark Horse, Valiant, Boom and DC Comics. At Marvel, Scott worked on nearly every title they publish and just listing those titles would provide such a ridiculously long set of words that gazing upon it would make your eyes glaze over and your head hurt if he subjected you to it, but he had a 6-year run on Deadpool, where he co-created Deadpool 2099, so at least something he drew will likely outlive his heirs. At DC, he pencilled and inked Batman: Gotham Nights, DC: Primal Age, Titans: Giant, Aquaman: the Becoming, and Flash Annual 2024 and How To Draw DC, and worked with George Pérez as an inker on Wonder Woman, Worlds' Finest, The Brave And The Bold and Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds and inked Keith Giffen's OMAC run. He is also the author of the book The Many Deaths of Scott Koblish. So this is the second episode paying tribute to the late great John Cassaday, the award winning comics artist, best known for his co-creation of Planetary, which we revisited last week John Cassaday passed away far too soon at the age of 52 on September 9, 2024 in New York City. Be sure to check out last week's replay of our episode of his work on Planetary - and of course, go pick up a copy - you will be blown away. This week we're revisiting one of our earliest episodes from our inaugural X-Month, where we read Cassaday's work on 2004's Astonishing X-Men - another solid read. We hope you'll make the time to revisit the work with us, to see the work of comics truly great artists. Mr. Cassaday received an Eisner Award, the comic book industry equivalent of the Oscar, for best penciler/inker in 2004. He tied for the award with Frank Quitely in 2005 and won it again in 2006, for Planetary with writer Warren Ellis and Astonishing X-Men with writer Joss Whedon, “There are basically three people that I would count as the easiest collaborations, the most natural, the best I've ever worked with,” Mr. Whedon said in an interview. “One is an actor, one is an editor and one is Johnny. He knew so much of what I was trying to convey that my scripts just got shorter and shorter.” “The best page I ever wrote in comics has no words,” Mr. Whedon said. The page, which also has no sound effects, depicts Kitty Pryde, Colossus's lover, gazing at him with a stunned expression as she places a hand over her heart. “He didn't swagger, he didn't yell,” Mr. Whedon said of Mr. Cassaday, but “he was very exacting” about his art — an approach that included giving notes on the colors and lettering of his pages. Laura J. Martin, the colorist on Astonishing X-Men, said that one of her favorite collaborations with Mr. Cassaday was the cover of No. 6 in the series, on which he depicted Kitty and Colossus caressing. The cover required extensive color work to convey texture and the silver sheen of Colossus's metallic body. Mr. Cassaday gave Ms. Martin that cover as a wedding present. Rest in peace John Cassaday.NY TIMES: John Cassaday, Award-Winning Comic Book Artist, Dies at 52https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/18/arts/john-cassaday-dead.html

Kevin and Shawn continue their coverage of X-Men Evolution with this introductory episode of Kitty Pryde! One of us really likes this episode and the other doesn't. Wait til you get those opinions out of us!
With their previous adventure offering a rare, decisive ending that didn't propel our heroes headlong into their next conflict for a change, X-MEN uses this act break to try something completely different: a time jump, as part 1 opens without warning in the distant, bleak future of 2055. Of course, the episode's title gives long-time comics devotees some idea of what to expect. "Days of Future Past" serves as the series' first direct adaptation, employing not just common characters and plot points, but lifting its story and namesake right out of the source material. The production team will go to this well on several more occasions in seasons ahead -- to varying degrees of success -- but their placement of "Days" doesn't coast on reputation alone. Though it is considered an all-time great, this story was ripe for the picking even so early in the run. Given the heavy emphasis on human-mutant relations and ever-present threat of the Sentinels, it stands as a logical extension of the ideas this first season has been most interested in getting across. Already, the X-Men have battled these mutant-hunting robots at home, abroad, and now, in the far-off future. The Sentinels' specter of oppression seems inescapable, hammering home just how high the stakes have become in the fight for trust and acceptance. Of course, like any effective adaptation, this teleplay takes some liberal departures from the original story in consideration of its audience, medium, and priorities. For the sake of simplicity (already a challenge for any tale centered around time travel as a plot device), absent are a number of characters not yet introduced within the universe of X-MEN: TAS. Notably, protagonist Kitty Pryde is nowhere to be seen, swapped out for Bishop as the mutant on a mission from the future. The specific motive, however, remains firmly intact, as made abundantly clear in part 2: prevent the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly at the hands of Mystique and her Brotherhood to avert a nightmarish future under dominion by the Sentinels. Popular then-rookie X-Man Bishop was always going to find his way into the show sooner rather than later, and appending his introduction to a classic comics saga lends the character a certain gravitas he might have otherwise lacked as a random walk-on guest (we're looking at you, Colossus). While this necessitates changes to Bishop's own backstory, the time travel conceit alone provides a logical rationale for his inclusion. What he brings to the lore isn't entirely discarded, as the mystery of a traitor within the X-Men's ranks is incorporated and woven into Mystique's plan. It serves as an interesting addendum to the source narrative -- not only does Mystique seek to murder Senator Kelly, she means to frame the X-Men in the process. It's a strong example of the show's finesse in weaving together unrelated, disparate plot elements, separated by more than a decade of publications (not to mention efficiently concluding a subplot that would persist throughout the comics for years to come, namely in the form of Bishop's distrust of Gambit and efforts to identify the traitor). All of it coalesces on arguably the most brilliant cliffhanger the series would ever deliver. For all the production team knew, this 13-episode season was going to be their only shot at bringing the X-Men to life on Saturday mornings. With their penultimate story ending on a twist DESPERATELY in need of resolution, the stage is set for a monumental, can't-miss finale. X-TRA: The reappearance of Mystique in this 2-parter allows for the opportunity to do a little continuity patchwork. Comics fans disappointed by Rogue's apparent lack of history with Mystique during their encounter in "Come the Apocalypse" were placated by the confirmation that the duo's familial relationship from the comics is maintained within the series after all. The explanation for Rogue failing to recognize her own foster mother? Rogue simply knew her in a different guise, with Mystique's natural appearance either previously unrevealed to Rogue OR a byproduct of Apocalypse's handiwork.

This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris send their minds 10 years into the past to discuss X-Men: Days of Future Past for its 10th anniversary. The follow-up to X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past combined the new cast introduced in Matthew Vaughn's movie with the OG Fox X-Men cast for a battle across time as Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) gets his consciousness sent back to 1973 to prevent the events that lead to a dark future where mutants (and their human allies) are hunted by the ruthless robots known as Sentinels. Zach and Chris talk about how terrible the Sentinel design is, the still incredible Quicksilver (Evan Peters) slo-mo sequence, the fun bits of alternate history, how exactly Hank's (Nicolas Hoult) serum gives Charles (James McAvoy) back the ability to walk, the Timecopesque implications of the ending scene and more.X-Men: Days of Future Past is available to stream on Max. All the way back in 1989, a pilot was created for what could have been the first full X-Men animated series. In another universe, this series with Kitty Pryde as the eyes of the audience and an Australian Wolverine succeeded and shaped Marvel cartoons and cinema for the next three decades. But, as listeners of this show know, that wasn't the case. Rod revisits this pilot, one of his favorite VHS's growing up, while JC experiences for the first time ever, only having seen the animated intro and of course the X-Men Arcade cabinet of the 90s which was based off of these character designs. Welcome to 2024 with this flashback bonus episode of X-Men: Pryde of the X-Men. Cyclops is Waiting for Me is our weekly podcast series where we are going back and watching EVERY-SINGLE-X-MEN-ANIMATED-EPISODE we can find. Our first series started with the original 1992 X-Men: The Animated Series building up to the release of X-Men 97', which we originally thought was coming out in 2023. But since it's not here yet, we needed to find some other shows to cover including bonus episodes like this one. Is our romantic advice worth a parting glance…? You decide!
