How can you fund your business as a new entrepreneur? There are resources available to you if you are willing to create a road map for your business upfront. If you don't have money to start the business of your dreams, there are financial resources available to help you fund your business. One of the most common objections to hiring a business coach is money. People often say things like "I need more clients first", "I can't afford it yet", "I have to talk to my husband", and the list goes on. But oftentimes, it isn't a lack of money it is a lack of being resourceful. When people are resourceful and come up with the money it shows great trust in themselves and the process, and that they are ready and willing to do what it takes to build the business and respond to their calling. The difference between men and women and how they tap into financial resources to fund their businesses No one needs to take extraordinary measures as there are options that may be a little uncomfortable, but not dramatic. Men, in general, are bigger risk-takers. They are willing to have a half-baked idea and jump right in. On the other hand, women like to be prepared upfront. Completely set and know for sure that the business is going to work. The question becomes, how much risk are you willing to take. A lot of the discomfort from the financial side is not having enough information. The information you need is the specific details of the products and services you will be offering. Conceptual details like how the product or service will be delivered, what the product or service looks like, what they feel like, how is the supplier, who is the target audience, etc. Likewise, you need to develop financial projections. It doesn't matter if this is service-based with little upfront investment or something more complex. Without the financial projections, your idea seems even scarier. It is important to know how much it will take to launch your business. Similarly, you need to know how long it will take to generate revenue. And, it is important to have an expectation of what the early months in your business will look like in terms of money going out versus money coming in. We don't know what we don't know when starting a business When you are starting a business, the best thing you can do is take advantage of the knowledge that consultants and coaches offer. They can help you plan ahead and ensure you have all of your plans in place. We don't know what we don't know. Having someone to guide you and help you build processes saves time and money throughout the course of your business. Diane shared a quote from a documentary, The Biggest Little Farm, "There's never enough time to do it right, but there's always enough time to do it over." In the end, if you don't do it right the first time, you are going to have to spend the money anyway. It makes more sense to pay it upfront and do things right instead of losing precious time in your business. Coming up with a plan to be prepared to pitch to investors to help fund your business Start with a road map or a business model canvas. Diana's road map is simplified from the model canvas. The road map addresses the conceptual items and the financial piece. If you have a framework, then you have an operating blueprint. Whether growth is fast or slow, you want to plan for it because you want to know what you are aiming for. Look at your plan every year and evaluate if you are where you want to be or doing what you want to be doing. Doing so will help you make a course correction if necessary. The overall road map will help you identify if you need financial assistance. If you have a plan in writing, you will come off as more prepared and professional and taken seriously by those you pitch for funding. Outside funding sources include your spouse, other family members, a business partner, savings accounts, stock, selling items, etc. Listen to episode 112 with Maureen Borzacchiello. Clarification on when women could sign for a business loan with a man co-signing: The Women's Business Ownership Act of 1988 allowed women to get a business loan without a male co-signer. Since 1972, the number of women-owned businesses has increased by 31 times. Also, please note that this interview was recorded before the interest rates started to escalate. Funding resources for business owners Traditional funding resources are bank loans or investors. However, now people are crowdfunding, identifying your target to raise money for your business. This is basically pitching your idea to the people that would have an interest in it. KJ Blattenbauer used Kickstarter to start her business, Pretty PepTalks. When you build the foundation first and invest upfront, even if borrowing money, you will be set up for success long-term. Jenny Kassan does something even more targeted to help you fund your business. She helps people use crowdfunding. Her book is Raise Capital on Your Own Terms: How to Fund Your Business without Selling Your Soul. The key is starting with a plan that is both conceptual and financial. Life often throws curveballs, that result in loss, grief, depression, shame, and a myriad of emotions. The key to overcoming is to take action. This is a story of an entrepreneur who took action over depression after two ectopic pregnancies resulting in loss, to start a clean fragrance business. Kelly Kussman had to overcome deep depression after losing two babies as a result of ectopic pregnancies. Her journey led her to start a clean fragrance business. She is now helping others create memories through scents. About Kelly Kussman Kelly Kussman is the owner, designer, and vision behind Cayla Gray, a luxury line of clean fragrances. She started her career in fragrance buying for a major department store where she fell in love with the distinctive nature of scents and their ability to make memories tangible. Seasons, nature, and scents have always been important and inspiring for Kelly. Scents have always made memories tangible for Kelly. Kelly's entrepreneurial journey began after she suffered from two ectopic pregnancies that ended in the loss of the babies. Through these experiences, Kelly realized that life was short and she began working on her business, Cayla Gray. Action and therapy are what worked for Kelly to recover from her loss. Kelly emphasized that it is important to honor your emotions in a way that works for you. Likewise, the more she shares her story, the more other women open up to her. Learn more about Tayna Dalton and her interview on The Robyn Graham Show. Taking action is key to overcoming Robyn emphasized that to overcome, whether it is shame, anxiety, or other emotions, we must take action. Without action, we stay stagnant and don't grow or change. It isn't always easy to take action, but you can put one foot in front of the other, baby steps, not massive action first, it is gradual. Kelly took action to shed the life she had before and to create something new. One action Kelly took, was journaling. This helped her see things in a new way and to appreciate the tiny moments of life. She began to purposefully see the beauty around her. As she journaled about all of these beautiful things brought Kelly back to scents. Fragrances are what bring her joy. Learning and discovering were key to beginning her business. She used Google and took classes as well as tapped into her past experience in retail for resources. Kelly worked two full-time jobs for about 18 months before she resigned from her corporate job in retail. Scents matter when you start a clean fragrance business When Kelly is creating, she begins with the scents she loves from her memories. She has created four scents, petals, water, cozy, and hearth. The Cayla Gray scents are related to the seasons. Petals - the Spring scent, light, powdery, floral. It smells like clean laundry and flowers at the same time. Water - the summer scent, cucumbers, spa water, and sitting by the pool with drinks. Cozy - the fall scent, sipping coffee outside on a chilly morning as winter starts to come. Hearth - the winter scent, a smokey bonfire scent that reminds her of her father. Once she mixes the scents she sends them off to a fragrance house to clean the mixtures and strip out any chemicals or preservatives. Kelly wants to have healthy products for her perfumes, candles, and other beauty products that are being created. Finding the right resources by aligning your values is important if you want to start a clean fragrance business Kelly has a perfume manufacturer or fragrance house that purifies the fragrances and then sends the fragrance oil back to her. From there, she sends the oil to a perfume fill house that fills the bottles for her. The same for the candles. She has a candle manufacturer who makes the candles using her fragrance oils. Kelly started doing this herself but quickly realized that she has to hire others to keep up with demand. She spent a lot of time networking to connect with others to see what they were doing and to gain connections to figure out the right partners, those who were aligned with her values. Learn more about KJ Blattenbauer and her interview. Integrity is very important for Kelly and she based her partnering decisions on which organizations she felt that she would be able to trust long-term. Use coupon code 20discovery when shopping at Cayla Gray. Kelly suggests starting with the discovery kit. Aligning your values, visions, and passions are a must if you want to start a clean fragrance business Kelly chose perfumes and candles as her products because they were items she is passionate about. She loves to have a scented candle and the flickering light when taking a bath and is obsessed with fragrances. Note: When you align your values, visions, and passions you will be able to build a solid foundation for your business. The importance of purity Using clean products is important for maintaining health. Kelly realized this when she was pregnant and she learned of all of the things she should avoid. She began to question why she was using products that weren't clean when she wasn't pregnant. The health and beauty industry is very minimally regulated in the United States. Currently, there are only 11 ingredients banned by the FDA compared to Europe, which bans over 1300 ingredients. There are harmful ingredients in a lot of products created in the United States, carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, and other harmful ingredients. It was important to Kelly to have clean products. But even the word clean is not regulated in the United States. Cayla Gray uses European standards when creating fragrances and products. She brings clarity in what you need to do, not only to be ready for PR, but your what your role is when you hire a publicist. It's a publicist's job to land you interviews on podcasts, on TV, online, but it's your job to show up, bring your expertise and have something the audience is going to benefit from. We are breaking down how you not only need to have a brand, but know your brand, know your audience and know what your end goal is. We're chatting about PR best practices, why hiring a publicist is to your advantage, and how publicists save you a ton of time and energy.
I design the dresses you'll want to live in and teach entrepreneurs how to be their own publicist. You've recently seen me featured on Entrepreneurs on Fire, PR Daily, Forbes, Inc., and more. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kjblattenbauer/
Realizing that small business owners and entrepreneurs needed help to share their message and passions with the world, KJ Blattenbauer started her PR agency. She found the pain point and knew she had the solution to the problem. Ultimately, the heart of entrepreneurship. What is PR? Public relations (PR) is the one of the best ways to build your brand and get the word out about your business. PR is the art of convincing an audience, outside of your normal circle of influence, to promote your idea, purchase your product, support your position or recognize you as an expert. It can include press releases, blog posts, and appearances on podcasts. It is not advertising. Any time someone is talking about you, it's a good thing. It's can be very inexpensive or have no cost at all, and you can control the narrative. It is how you want people to think, feel and talk about your brand. Make people want to be a part of what you are doing! Where to start? Key message flushed out into an elevator speech! What are your key messages? What do you want people to say about you and your business to others? How do you explain what you do? The more you repeat your key messaging the more it will be repeated by others and the more your message will spread. You need 3 to 4, really 3, key messages that people can take away from every post, profile, bio or interview you do. This will help everyone understand exactly what you do, who you serve and the problem you solve through your business. You need to be able to tell everyone, in 30 seconds, who you are and what you do! This becomes your elevator speech. Ideal Audience Who is your target audience? Niche down to identify them. What are they reading, watching, and listening to? Whether you like them or not, if your target audience is paying attention to them, you need to be putting your message in them. What media outlets do they pay attention to? Make a media list. If you audience listens to podcasts, you want to focus on podcasts. What's the Beat? Once you know the media outlets, research what they are covering. Really dig deep to identify what they write or speak about and create messaging specifically for your brand around that. Be sure to personalize your message. Know their recent publications and then include them in the pitch. Include three topics or tips that you can share. Use gratitude at the end of your pitch! And, include your phone number, email, website and maybe, if you feel sassy, your Instagram account. Do not include a photo or attachments to the email. Have a plan in place to spread the word about your service or product. Don't try to be everywhere for everyone because you will end up speaking to no one. Follow Up You will never get a 100% response rate with PR. But that doesn't mean you should give up. Do the follow up because people miss things in their email inbox. The only bad answer is a maybe. If someone says no, that is their answer. If they say yes, awesome! But not hearing from someone is frustrating. Pitch and follow up! Media Kit A media kit is like a resume for your brand. It includes your bio, high level overview of your brand, a few images so that people can be familiar with you and what you do. Include stats and figures about your business. 5 P's Of PR Position - Clearly communicate your value proposition. Key messages. Plan - Lay out a strategic plan and stick to it. Promote - Day in and day out promote yourself. You need approximately 14 touches to be seen and have people purchase from you. Persevere - It can be a grind and discouraging. You will hear no. You have to keep at it! Publicize - Once you have secured press, promote it everywhere, social media, blog, media page, etc. This validates you as an expert. Every day for two weeks, share the interview or media piece. Think of media interviews as a gift to share your message. It's common courtesy to thank them and share the interview. How to Be a Media Darling KJ's book. Available on Amazon and on her website. PR is free. There is so much value and you don't have to pay for it! PR has more weight than an ad and it's free. Media page Include your bio, the bio that you want people to use if you are a guest on a podcast, or part of an article. Short, succinct bio. Have three images of yourself that people can take and use right away. List all of the places you have appeared. Include the means of contact. If you have a PR person, include their name. If you are the contact, have your contact information there. Include whether or not you are willing to travel for speaking engagements. It is a must have page on your website. Use HARO Answer the questions and have a chance at publication. It's a great way to get your name out there and to present yourself as an expert and authority in your niche. Again, it's free press. Vieve and Jo KJ's dress line. Dresses for all ages and shapes. Fun summer styles and colors! The company is named after her mother and grandmother and the styles are named after women who have inspired her and made her the woman she is now. Dress for day to night with only needing to change the accessories!
