Any day now, an amazing pre-summer peak walleye pattern is going to explode. And it is based on something few anglers understand — the shiner spawn. Dr. Paul Cooley is the fisheries scientist who discovered the phenomenon on massive Lake Winnipeg — but it happens in every lake where walleyes eat shiners — and he tells the boys where you'll find the fish bunched up big time. Are you ready for this: the best fishing occurs in waist deep water on the same sand beaches where everyone is swimming and sunbathing. Hold onto your hats because you're not going to believe this one.
The introduction of new technology has helped revolutionize the application of livestock manure fertilizer to cropland. This is an important topic as we examine the influence of modern agriculture on the environment and calls for the creation of a provincially appointed task group to develop solutions to the algae problem in Lake Winnipeg. Manitoba Pork General Manager Cam Dahl says the modernization of agriculture is making the application of manure more precise. A mid-sized chicken farm in Saskatchewan needs to heat the barns to above 30 degrees the entire year-round. In 2023, this chicken farmer paid $23,000 in natural gas heating bills. Of that bill, about a third, or $7,500 is just carbon tax and GST on the carbon tax. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released Leger polling showing 70 per cent of Canadians support a carbon tax exemption on propane and natural gas for farmers. CTF Prairie Director Gage Haubrich said this shows Canadians know that keeping costs down for farmers helps lower costs at the grocery store for all of us.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

While on an exporation trip to Lake Winnipeg, we learned numerous things. One, don't be afraid to go BIG and GUADY! We had a tough time getting the big greenbacks to bite. They were not reacting to any of the typical Big Windy tactics so we went large. A 4.5 inch Little Doctor spoon and 3 minnows. Brook Schryer recalled his first interaction with zebra mussels in the early 1990s. He was living with his family on Lake Scugog in Ontario and one fall, Schryer and his brothers pulled the family boat out of the water and noticed that it was double its normal weight. This was because of the sheer number of tiny mollusks that clung to the bottom of the boat. The brothers scraped the mussels off the boat but at just five years old, Brook didn't understand just how big of a problem the pesky mollusks would become. Zebra mussels are native to the Black and Caspian seas region in southeastern Europe and in the 1980s they established themselves in the Great Lakes through ballast water from ships. According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as of 2020, the mussels have been found in Lake St. Clair, the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River, the Mississippi River watershed and most recently in Lake Winnipeg, the Red River and the Nelson River. Zebra mussels have created huge changes in the ecosystems they have established in; they have also caused significant economic impacts. In the 1990s and early 2000s, attempts were made to prevent other invasive species from causing the same havoc. On this episode of What happened to…? Erica Vella speaks with experts about the damage caused by zebra mussels and finds out what has been done to stop the spread of the invasive species and how can we prevent it from happening again. IWOC joins IGSTS with a dynamic conversation on the documentary about the tiny Ojibway community of Hollow Water on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. This First Nation must deal with an epidemic of #sexualabuse. The director depicts offenders who have left a legacy of denial and pain, addiction, and suicide. However, as unreadable as these men and women may look, it is with and through restorative justice that the community is successful. The reason I think, the Manitoba justice system was unsuccessful in ending the cycle of abuse, is that the community of Hollow Water took matters into its own hands. The offenders were brought home to face justice in a community healing and sentencing circle. Based on traditional practices, this unique model of justice reunites families and heals both victims and offenders. The film is a powerful tribute to one community's ability to heal and create change.https://www.nfb.ca/film/hollow_water/This podcast is a vision that has found its roots in the historical mistreatment of black persons throughout this country; moreover, in light of recent history, where the world viewed the most egregious and despicable murder of unarmed black men by white police officers in the state of Minnesota. I would like with the aid of multimedia (audio and video) provide awareness of criminal injustice that has historically had a detrimental effect on people of color. I will co-host a podcast out of the city where George Floyd was murdered. Along with providing a commentary on law enforcement and the system of corrections. The platform will vary from commentaries on current issues to interviews with those directly affected by enacted laws and statutes. This conversation will not only include those who are currently and have been recently released from prison but also provide an opportunity for the voiceless to voice their experiences in dealing with the criminal injustice system. In addition, any new laws that are being introduced that affect those currently or previously in the system of correction will be debated.#trending #hollowwater #justice #forgotten #foryou #bestpodcast #trending #stopsexualabuse #justice #foryou #queer #lgbtq #communityengagement #blacklivesmatteractivist #forgotten #beaurara #stan #podcast #minneapolis #mentalhealth #prison #igotsomethangtasay #grillpit #fight #juvenilejustice #juveniles #juveniledelinquent #nobodycares #actofkindness #actsofkindness #legalhelp #life #transwoman #transwomenarewomen #brittneygriner #activism #activist
Originally aired on October 29, 2018Alex is not your typical 18 years old. Instead of setting out to trade school, college, or hanging out at home after the summer of high school graduation, Alex decided he wanted to do something adventurous to transition into this new phase of life called adulthood. That desire led him to kayak 1,750 km around the edges of Lake Winnipeg, something incredibly daunting considering the remoteness of much of the lake as well as the unpredictable weather.Alex is incredibly articulate for his age and understands that this trip was an amazing opportunity to show the world the importance of keeping resources like Lake Winnipeg free of pollution, invasive species, and a refuge for the human soul. He's already an experienced adventurer and we're super excited that Alex joined us for this interview as we're sure he'll be an even bigger name in the outdoor community very soon.lakewinnipegcircumnavigation.com/about-alexInstagram @alex.marrtinAlexmartinphotography.myportfolio.comDo you want to take charge of your health and wellness and have better sleep, more energy, and a healthier immune system? Among the richest sources of strange tales to come out of the Canadian fur trade are the writings of a 19th Century fur trader named George Nelson, who worked for three different fur trading syndicates in the wilderness of Wisconsin, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. 0:00:00 - Transfer to Lake Winnipeg 0:03:36 - Lac du Bonnet 0:05:01 - The Banshee 0:18:17 - The Mysteries of Lake Winnipeg 0:11:27 - Big Dog Mountain Script, Music, Video, and Narration by Hammerson Peters Executive Producer: Dan Chomistek Cover and Thumbnail Art by August Swinson, Member of Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation in Ontario
