Please visit our Sponsors & Partners - they help make the show possible! OMNIPOD DEXCOM Hello and welcome to Diabetes Connections In the News! I'm Stacey Simms and these are the top diabetes stories and headlines of the past seven days. If you're new we go live on social media first and then All sources linked up at diabetes dash connections dot com when this airs as a podcast. XX Looking to get organized? Diabetes supplies can really add up and all that pump and CGM stuff or even shots and wipes and strips can clutter everything up. I've got a great new guide to help you out. It'll get you started and keep you organized. That's totally free and it's over on the podcast homepage. XX A new study adds to the idea that Vitamin D might help with type 1 diabetes in kids. These researchers look at young people ages 10-21 and found that a supplement of Vitamin D2 may improve insulin sensitivity and slow the increase of A1C for those newly diagnosed. This was over the course of a year. Very small study, fewer than 40 kids and teens, and all of them diagnosed for three months or less. A lot more to learn here.. but the study is in the Journal of the Endocrine Society. https://www.healio.com/news/endocrinology/20220221/vitamin-d2-supplement-may-slow-progression-of-newonset-type-1-diabetes-in-children XX This is more business news.. but something to keep an eye on.. RosVivo has signed with Eli Lilly for commercial development. Rosvivo has a drug said to be a game changer to treat diabetes and obesity. Lilly will now review and move it forward. The drug is said to restore the function of beta cells that secrete insulin, the cause of diabetes, and at the same time lowering insulin resistance. Animal studies only but we're keeping an eye on this one. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/rosvivo-therapeutics-inc-signed-material-125200372.html XX Provention Bio has resubmitted the Biologics License Application (BLA) for teplizumab. This is the drug that shows a delay of clinical type 1 diabetes for three years. The FDA said “no” last year.. but it did so in a way that left the door open, so Provention has done what's been asked and is now resubmitting. The CEO says quote - “We continue to proceed with a sense of urgency, recognizing that significant unmet need exists for patients and their caregivers.” https://www.empr.com/home/news/drugs-in-the-pipeline/provention-bio-resubmits-bla-for-teplizumab-to-delay-type-1-diabetes/ XX The link between high blood pressure and diabetes seems to come down to a small protein cell. An international team shows this glucagon like peptide called GLP-1 pairs up the body's control of blood sugar and blood pressure. Doctors have known for a long time that high blood pressure and diabetes go together, but this is the first time the reason for that has been found in the body. GLP-1 is released from the wall of the gut after eating. It also stimulates a small sensory organ in the neck. These researchers say GLP-1 is just the start for more study. https://scitechdaily.com/long-standing-enigma-finally-cracked-link-discovered-between-high-blood-pressure-and-diabetes/ XX More support for bariatric surgery as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. A study found that adults with obesity who had weight loss surgery and achieved “substantial weight loss” before contracting COVID reduced their risk for severe infection by 60% compared to those who didn't have surgery. The study was conducted by researchers at the Cleveland Clinic. Previous studies have found that in obese patients with type 2, bariatric surgery sends it into remission more than 75% percent of cases. https://blogs.bcm.edu/2022/02/21/bariatric-surgery-helps-with-diabetes-leads-to-better-covid-outcomes-study-finds/ XX Throughout the COVID 19 pandemic, endocrinologists have had the highest rates of… telehealth adoption. This study released by Doximity – we've spoken to them on the show – looked at telehealth claims from January 2020 to June of 2021. As expected, younger physicians used telehealth more than their older counterparts. And they say the research shows that telehealth can successfully help manage diabetes – and that it even lowers A1C in people with type 2. They don't say why.. but I'd think it's because it's easier to get a visit in remotely. Interestingly they also did a top five for metro areas with the highest telehealth adoption. They were: Boston, Baltimore, Charlotte, Philly and San Francisco. https://mhealthintelligence.com/news/telehealth-adoption-highest-among-diabetes-gi-care-providers XX The World Health Organization is looking for people living with diabetes for an international focus group. They say they hope to foster solidarity and policy action between people living with diabetes, while acknowledging and highlighting differences in treatment and management needs between different types of diabetes. The focus group will be held March 9 and 10 live and online. We've linked up the survey you need to fill out to be considered. https://extranet.who.int/dataformv3/index.php/257838?lang=en XX An ambitious project to make a movie about type 1 diabetes in a dystopian world is moving along via kickstarter. Noah Averbach-Katz is an actor and writer and has lived with type 1 for more than 20 years. He says too often a disabled person is reduced to a plot point - a problem that gives the abled hero an opportunity to save the day. He wants to tell a story that captures the fears, trials, and experiences of a Type 1 diabetic. The Star Trek community is rallying behind this – Averback Katz and his wife Mary Wiseman are both part of the Star Trek Discovery series. The kickstarter goes until March 24th. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/noahak/type-1 XX As we hinted last week, Omnipod has a fun crossover with Nintendo. The very popular Switch game, Animal Crossing now has a new diabetes-themed designed by Insulet. It's known as Omnipod Bay, you add it to the game with a special code. Omnipod Bay features booths from selected diabetes charities as well outfits, diabetes supply bags and diabetes-themed areas and activities. I asked – no little podcast headphone as of this time! The game add-on comes just two weeks after Insulet's Omnipod 5, was cleared by the FDA. XX Our long format episode this week is with the Lauren Bongiorno, a diabetes health coach who is a terrific example of why it's not a great idea to aim for perfect with diabetes. She shares how her A1C was basically perfect during college but that she… was miserable. And next week.. all about Eversense, the 6 month CGM. Listen wherever you get your podcasts That's In the News for this week.. if you like it, please share it! Thanks for joining me! See you back here soon.
Jacqueline Lynch talks with fellow Type 1 Diabetic Lauren Bongiorno about healthy and wholistic ways to deal with diabetes, the transition from high school to college with Type 1, and the importance of keeping the mind healthy as well as the body.
Lauren Bongiorno was diagnosed with type 1 as a child and growing up, she showed every sign of success. She was a division one athlete, playing soccer in college and achieved the lowest A1C her endo had seen in a college student.. but while her care team celebrated that 5.7, she was miserable. Lauren shares how she took control and got that happiness back. She's now a Diabetes Coach at her company, Risely. We talk about some common pitfalls, the pressure to be perfect and what coaching really means. This podcast is not intended as medical advice. Lauren is the Founder of Risely Health, a virtual Diabetic Health Coach, Yoga Instructor, and the Author of the Diabetic Health Journal. Lauren coaches T1D'S all over the world to achieve optimal diabetes management using her 360-degree approach, emphasizing wellness throughout the mind, body, and soul. She will discuss how her diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes changed her whole life and took her down a path she never imagined for herself. https://laurenbongiorno.com/Lauren Bongiorno Bio:"When I was 19 and home from school on Christmas break, I walked into my endocrinologist's office and they told me something jaw dropping. The news? My A1C was a 5.7- the best it had ever been since being diagnosed at 7. When the doctor told me, my mom hugged me with the biggest smile on her face and my endocrinologist started bragging to the nurse how much of a “star” diabetic example I was. While this celebratory moment was going down between the nurse, my endocrinologist and my mom, I couldn't help but feel so defeated. I know, not what you'd expect to hear. On paper I was healthy, but deep down inside I didn't feel that way... When everyone around you keeps telling you how strong and amazing you are, but the way you feel doesn't match up, you feel like a fraud and like you're letting them down. This shouldn't have been the case. But it's how I felt. In college I wanted to lose weight, stabilize my blood sugars, and feel more in control of my diabetes. But I went down the path of restriction and obsession which ultimately got me a near perfect A1C but left me with a horrible relationship with food, an unsustainably restrictive lifestyle, and feeling less in control of my life then ever before. In short, here's what I learned at that time of my life about diabetes management: if you're interested in eating every meal at home, saying no to the movies with friends because you know the popcorn will be too tempting, restricting carbs, spending every 30 seconds checking your blood sugar, and scheduling your life around cardio machines in FEAR of not being enough, striving for perfection, and proving your worth to others, then you too can have a perfect A1C.I realized at my rock bottom ( after losing my menstrual cycle for almost 5 years from putting so much stress on my body) that seeing the endocrinologist every 3-6 months and depending on her for a “one stop diabetes shop” wasn't going to help me holistically move into the life I wanted: having more peace of mind, confidence in myself, stronger mentally and physically, more energized empowered, a good friend/daughter/ girlfriend, and simply the best, kick ass version of myself...I eventually found that the answer was in unraveling my old habits in what I was thinking and doing, looking inwards at what did/ did not serve me, and building a new, stronger relationship with myself, my diabetes, exercise, food, stress...everything. I understand how it feels to be frustrated by lack of results and trying to figure out what the “right answer” is to feeling your best balanced self is. Trust me, I've tried it all, I get it. But the truth is, when you prioritize your self care mentally, emotionally, and physically, you don't have to choose between freedom and good blood sugars. You can have both. I was supposed to go to law school just like my dad ( my younger sister Dana is now his retirement plan!) I wanted to fight to improve our food and health care system. But I decided to become a health coach instead. I made a last minute switch because I realized I didn't want to fight for years and years to create change. I wanted to empower and guide others to see a better way of doing things for themselves."Make sure to subscribe & review Lady Empire above for the opportunity to be featured!
Did you have a coach in high school who inspired you and encouraged you to do your best? Someone who held you accountable, pushed you out of your comfort zone, and gave you the tools you needed to succeed? When we talk about high school sports, having a coach is normal. But what about a coach to help you manage diabetes? My guest on this episode of the podcast is Lauren Bongiorno. Lauren is a T1D Health coach and the founder of Lauren Bongiorno Coaching. Lauren tells us the story of how after years of unhealthy relationships with herself and lack of self love she turned to yoga to slow down her mind. It was at the end of a yoga class during "shivasana" when she was finally hit with the thought of "What if?" What if she didn't go to law school like her family and instead pursued a career of helping other diabetics achieve their optimal level of wellness!? This episode is filled with great little tidbits of how reach your potential. From how to deal with overwhelm to recognizing your patterns of behavior , I hope you will take a listen and learn something new! I love her story about how her father is her greatest source of inspiration and his love of projects inspired her to go after her dreams! Lauren Bongiorno is an Entrepreneur, Diabetic Health Coach, and Author dedicated to giving people with Diabetes the tools they need to become strong and empowered. She is one of the FEW people in her niche and over the past year I have had the pleasure of watching her step into her power and help help so many people by sharing her knowledge and experiences on social media, in her 1:1 coaching programs, E-Books, courses, and more. In this episode, Lauren shares how niching down completely transformed her business and how listening to her clients feedback and needs led her to create and incorporate a physical product into her service based business. Lauren and I share such similar views on so many different topics and I just love the way that she values investing in herself and her business in order to make sure her clients are having the best experience possible, while also ensuring that she is growing her business efficiently. This episode is packed full of value and I can’t wait to hear your biggest take aways!
You guys are going to LOVE these two ladies...Betsy and Laura Milne (not related, by the way) are two powerful (and lucious) female entrepreneurs who have created a business they love so that it could support their dreams instead of the other way around! We talk about how the journey of being an entrepreneur can be a lonely one, especially when your current circle of family or friends doesn’t necessarily understand what your dream is. We talked about how to surround yourself with other people that do support your dreams or speak your entrepreneurial language by INTENTIONALLY “getting into the room.” We talk about what it takes to “do things differently” than others - challenging the status quo to create and business and a life that you love vs. what everyone else is doing in the 9-5 employee world. We discussed the difference between the “employee mindset” and the “entrepreneurial mindset” as well as the journey/twists/turns/pivots/evolution that is in store as an entrepreneur. Laura and Betsy discuss what it takes to get clear on your mission and how to stand in your truth...how to link arms with someone that believes in you more than you believe in yourself and how to take “bold and messy action.” We also share resources on how to begin to make multiple streams of revenue (because hey, millionaires have, on average, 7 streams of revenue)! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did...and stay tuned for my interview on their podcast as well! Lauren Bongiorno is an entrepreneur, health coach & author. In one word though, Lauren is an innovator. She has pioneered and created a career that didn't exist before; a career that allows her to live in the intersection of where her purpose, passion and skill collide. For someone still in her twenties Lauren has done more than most do over their entire careers. In this episode, Lauren shares a pivotal 10 minutes that changed the trajectory of her life forever. She also talks through going from what if to why not now, creating your own roadmap, balancing your drive with alignment while still making progress, what she does to start and accelerate projects and much more.
In Season 5 Episode 8, we welcome back @Lauren_Bongiorno to talk all-things meditation, exercise, and wellness with Type 1 diabetes, along with answering some followers' questions for T1D the health coach and creator of the Diabetic Health Journal.
Lauren Bongiorno’s story and essence are so well aligned with how Stand to Serve shifted in Season 2. Lauren and I both had the honor of being part of Amy Jo Martin’s Renegade Brand Bootcamp last fall and spent three months learning and growing together. I grew to appreciate, respect and look up to her and how she’s paving the way for the space she’s stepping into. Lauren was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes, when she was 7 years old. This impacted every area of her life, and as she tried to navigate this illness and learn how her body worked she recognized a major lack of support from the healthcare system. Lauren set out to find a way to be healthy, manage her diabetes and feel balanced and happy in her own body. Lauren is now an entrepreneur, diabetes health coach, author of the Diabetes Health Journal, and dedicates her time to giving people with diabetes the tools they need to become strong and empowered. In this episode, Lauren and I talk about what events led her to choose the path she’s on now, how she lives a life of mindfulness and self-reflection, and strategies you can implement to approach health, wellness and business in a holistic way. “I think everybody has to look at their lives and reflect on the recurring themes because they’re trying to tell you something.” This conversation is so good; I dare you not to take notes. When Lauren Bongiorno was seven, her mom began noticing that something seemed off. Lauren was constantly thirsty, going to the bathroom upwards of 10 times a night; she was cranky, a departure from her normal happy self; and she was inexplicably losing weight. A visit to the hospital left her with the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, setting off a years-long journey of learning to manage the disease she calls a “24/7 job,” and finding an unexpected career path in the process. After subsisting on sugar-free Jell-O in the hospital for a week, seven-year-old Lauren was discharged. The new diagnosis was a lot to handle for her and her family, but what was even more unnerving was the lack of guidance the doctors gave them. Her doctor offered insulin as the only tool to help her manage the disease, telling her, “you can eat whatever you want, just give yourself a shot for your carbs.” The nutritionist she was referred to didn't help much either. Says Lauren, “They taught me how to read a label, and that was about it.” Watch how Lauren took her disease into her own hands and saw amazing improvements when she did. Her success even inspired her to become a diabetic health coach and yoga instructor. Lauren Bongiorno joins me today for this special bonus episode to help us all kick start a new year of health, wellness and creating a mindset that will help us all consistently get after what we desire in life. Lauren was on episode 007 of the podcast where we went deep into her story. But as a quick overview, Lauren is a health coach and a yogi who has thrived with type 1 diabetes since childhood. On today's show, Lauren shares her top 5 keys to unlock the best version of ourselves in 2018, and we also talk about her upcoming book “The Diabetic Health Journal'. www.thebravestlife.com/027
As I started to develop the foundation for the podcast, I wanted to make sure I was not just about talking about change and overcoming obstacles in our lives. While conversations can be inspiring, I wanted this to also be about giving you real world opportunities to challenge yourself, and to be uncomfortable. I've found that it's only in those moments of challenge that we have a fighting chance to make positive changes to our mindset, our physiology, our health and wellbeing. That all rolls into our ability to make a dent in the world. So, this week we're going to experiment by launching the first episode of segments we'll call 'Your Bravest Life' which are dedicated to helping you take your game to the next level. This one will require that you find a quiet space, so if you listen to the podcast during your commute or during a run or workout, press pause and come back to this when you're not required to be active in your world. We had such an amazing response to last week's podcast featuring Lauren Bongiorno. I hope you caught that interview, but if you haven't listened to that episode yet, do yourself a huge favor and check it out. Lauren was such a dynamic guest and we got pretty deep on topics including nutrition, exercise, yoga and the focus for today's podcast, which is meditation. I've spoken previously about my history with meditation and mindfulness. If you're interested, check out the interview I did with Cyrus Khambatta on the Mastering Diabetes YouTube page. But, the reality is that meditation and mindfulness holds tremendous benefits for all of us. There's a growing body of scientific literature exploring the brain and how it actually has the ability to change for the better through the practice of meditation. And not only does the brain change, but a consistent meditation practice will also positively impact your blood pressure, your heart rate, and even lead to changes that will positively impact your blood glucose levels. In this episode, and first installment of ‘Your Bravest Life', Lauren Bongiorno leads us all on a guided meditation that will undoubtedly help you connect with yourself on a much deeper level.
Lauren Bongiorno is a meditation teacher, a yogi and a health coach who is contributing to the world in so many different ways. While she spends a good amount of her energy coaching clients with type 1 diabetes to healthier, happier lives, she is also a busy entrepreneur who is working on some next level projects that will allow her to make an impact on even more people than her day to day schedule allows. In this episode, Lauren and I talk about her diagnosis with diabetes at the age of seven, and how her parents were instrumental in helping her develop a high level of confidence despite that diagnosis. We also talk about her Division 1 college soccer career and her decision to transition away from law school to follow her passion in the world of health and wellness. Lauren also shares, what she calls 'a difficult relationship with food and exercise', and how common eating disorders are in the diabetes community. We then shift the conversation to her entry into the world of nutrition, yoga and meditation, and how they helped her transition from being unrealistic at times and very hard on herself, to following a path to a more balanced and healthy life. Lauren believes this has allowed her to become more comfortable in her own skin and that it has positively impacted her energy and clarified her mind so she can better connect with the people around her. This is a conversation of digging in deep, doing the hard work, and learning as much about yourself as possible, so you can make your greatest impact on the world around you. Lauren is a perfect example of how we can take the diagnosis of diabetes, fight through life's speed bumps, and then turn the volume up our inner voice to allow our purpose to shine through. She's super energetic and her mission is to help bring joy to the people around her. When you listen to Lauren, it's obvious, she not only talks about how to live a better life, she truly walks the walk. I had a great time meeting Lauren and talking to her about her life story.
We're back and better than ever (now that Christie has finished her undgergrad and we were graced with the presence of a special guest). In Ep. 9 we chatted about all things health, mind and body with Instagram sensation @Lauren_Bongiorno. Take a listen and relax, and hopefully get a few tips and tricks out of the episode.
