323: Own the Room: The Discipline of Audience Engagement with Michael Kent

The Business of Meetings

We're delighted to welcome audience engagement specialist Michael Kent as our guest today. In this episode, Michael speaks with Eric about audience engagement, corporate events, comedy, magic, workplace culture, and the growing role of AI in live experiences. Stay tuned as Michael shares how years of performing around the world shaped his approach to helping companies create meaningful events that bring people together, reduce stress, and strengthen workplace relationships. Michael's Journey Michael has been entertaining people since he was six years old. After discovering magic at Walt Disney World, he became known as "Magic Mike" throughout school and college. He later worked as a marketing director while continuing to perform magic shows on the side. Once the numbers made sense financially, he left his day job and moved into entertainment full-time. Over the last 23 years, he has toured internationally as a comedian and magician, performing in 21 countries and 49 states. Over time, he came to realize that his real role was to engage audiences to help companies connect with their people through experiences that are fun, positive, memorable, and meaningful. A Clear Goal Entertainment should support the broader purpose of an event rather than exist separately from it. Michael believes many companies only hold annual events because they have always done so. But that is not enough. Before planning entertainment, it's essential to define exactly what the event aims to accomplish, as different goals require different approaches. Early Involvement Michael prefers to be included early in the planning process rather than hired at the last minute, as he needs to understand why the company chose the venue, who will attend, whether spouses are included, and what challenges the organization is facing. Audience Engagement Audiences become more engaged when they share experiences. Michael's role is often about helping people who do not know each other feel connected. By bringing people on stage, creating audience participation, and encouraging interaction, he helps attendees build familiarity and trust. That matters because people remember shared experiences long after the event, helping their workplace communication feel more comfortable. Matching Entertainment Style To The Audience After being brought in late to an event, Michael discovered a major language barrier with the audience, as most attendees spoke very little English, forcing him to rely on visual aids rather than his usual interactive comedy style. That experience reinforced how important it is to match the entertainment style to the audience and to include performers early enough in the planning process to allow for proper adaptation. Safe Comedy for Corporate Events Michael always guarantees that his performances will contain nothing objectionable. He avoids political, racial, or offensive material because his goal is to bring people together, not make anyone uncomfortable. For him, even one person feeling alienated at an event matters. While college audiences sometimes expect slightly edgier material, most organizations today simply want clean, trustworthy entertainment that creates a positive shared experience. Stage Fright Michael feels that nervousness before speaking is healthy because it means you care. He always focuses on the mission of the event rather than his own anxiety. Before his performances, he thinks about how to help people relax, reconnect, and enjoy themselves together. Workplace Relationships Matter Workplace friendships can significantly improve productivity and retention. Events give employees a chance to see each other outside their normal work roles, creating a more human connection. He recommends seating arrangements that combine new hires, long-term employees, executives, and people from different departments, as this helps younger employees feel included while allowing experienced staff to serve as mentors and support systems naturally. A Simple Engagement Strategy A simple idea companies can use at events is to have attendees wear color-coded wristbands or name tags linked to their years of service or departments without them initially knowing their meaning, to create curiosity and conversation. Later during the event, the system is explained, and leaders can use it to highlight employee experience levels and connections across the company. Small details like this encourage interaction and help audiences become more engaged. How Michael Views AI and Authenticity Michael believes many people currently feel more stress than opportunity around AI, although he expects that to change. One major problem is that people use AI to bypass authenticity. He has attended company events where executive speeches clearly sounded AI-generated, which immediately reduced the feeling of connection in the room. Michael believes AI should function as a tool rather than replace human communication. At the same time, he expects AI to increase demand for live experiences because people still crave authentic, in-person interaction and shared laughter. Live Events Still Matter Live events provide something that screens and AI cannot fully replace. Hearing hundreds of people laugh together creates a shared emotional experience that people deeply miss in a screen-focused world. Michael believes companies that invest in meaningful in-person experiences will continue to see value in stronger workplace culture, better communication, and improved employee relationships. Michael's Approach to Success Fame has never been Michael's main goal. He prefers to focus on helping people, creating meaningful experiences, and leaving audiences happier than when they arrived. BIO: Michael Kent Michael Kent is an Audience Engagement Specialist. Through more than 2 decades of experience as a Comedy Magician working with corporations, colleges, and military installations, he has mastered the art of one thing: Connecting companies to their people in a way that's good, fun, positive, memorable - but more than that - meaningful. He's been named Entertainer of the Year by Campus Activities Magazine, Magician of the Year by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. He has appeared on the television show Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Michael enhances company events and is passionate about ensuring they have a real-world impact by improving employee retention, reducing absenteeism, promoting a positive corporate culture, and fostering the inspiration that leads to a healthy, profitable organization. Jake Stahl is a dynamic professional business sales author, speaker, and trainer dedicated to empowering individuals and teams through effective communication to achieve exceptional sales success using neurostrategy.

Work On Your Game: Discipline, Confidence & Mental Toughness For Sports, Business & Life | Mental Health & Mindset

In this episode, I talk about how to walk like you own the room. I share a story from my freshman year in college, when a coach tried to shame me for carrying myself with confidence—and why I refused to let that mindset stick. How you enter a room is the first test of your presence, long before you open your mouth. Weak men drift in like they're asking for permission; strong men step in with authority. I break down how to show that authority the right way, without arrogance and without saying a word. Show Notes: [04:39]#1 Posture tells the story. [11:05]#2 Pace creates presence. If you've ever walked out of a meeting thinking, “Why didn't that land?”Or if you've ever felt invisible in corporate…Or if you're building a life outside of corporate and wondering why some conversations connect and others fall flat…This episode will hit you hard.Today, Brett welcomes back Jake Stahl — author of the brand-new book Own the Room and creator of the STRATA framework, a system for reading people, decoding signals, and communicating with true presence instead of performance.Twelve years ago, Jake lost everything to opioid addiction — his marriage, his home, his reputation, and the identity he'd spent decades building. But his path back didn't begin with a new job or a second chance. It began with learning how to read people.Jake realized that most communication has nothing to do with the words being spoken. It's the signals beneath them — the micro-expressions, the posture shifts, the emotional triggers — that determine whether someone trusts you, connects with you, or shuts down entirely.Today, Jake breaks down STRATA, the six-part framework you can use to own every room you enter: • Signal: What you broadcast before you say a word • Trigger: The moment resistance appears • Reframe: How you shift someone's lens without force • Anchor: Making the insight stick • Transfer: Turning your idea into their idea • Action: Where the next step becomes inevitableWe talk about how STRATA applies to sales, relationships, leadership, marriage, friendships — and most importantly, the escapee journey. Because leaving corporate and building your own path requires one core skill:

Guest post by Isobel Rimmer, who is founder of international training and development consultancy, Masterclass Training, and author of Present with Presence: Everything you need to plan, prepare and deliver with impact in any situation published by Rethink Publishing I've trained hundreds of tech professionals, from IBM mainframe pre-sales engineers to the geekiest white hat hackers, consultants and data analysts, to speak with presence and confidence in customer meetings, conferences and events. In this article, I share what makes the best stand out and truly own the room. Presentation Skills, to Present with Presence There was a time when tech professionals, particularly in high level customer meetings, were expected to stay mute, speak only when spoken to, and then only in words of one syllable. How times have changed - and rightly so. Subject matter experts, SMEs, are critical to success in tech. Whether a systems architect, security specialist, pre-sales engineer, systems integrator or IT services professional explaining how the 'tech' will work, your ability to make what you say meaningful to every member of your audience, however technical, will make you stand out. And that's a key point. Just how technical is your audience? You probably take what you do for granted. You're comfortable with the 'tech' and you know the jargon. But that may not be true of the people you're speaking to. If you want to own the room, the first step is to assess the level of technical skill in the room. Most people are too polite to say they don't understand when things get complicated. They don't want to look foolish not knowing the latest acronym or piece of jargon. I once spent a whole day hearing about the 'uniques' of a major IT vendor when, to my horror (and that of the speaker), one audience member, looking confused, asked which version of 'Unix' he was talking about… No one likes a 'smart Alec' either, so your ability to pitch at the appropriate tech level will make you a star. Rarely does it work to try and impress with superior tech knowledge. One of the best ways to stand out is to introduce 'stories' and 'characters' into your presentations. I remember an amazing tech pitch at a Gartner event when the speaker used two hand puppets (and no notes) to explain his product's roadmap. Unique, fun and incredibly easy to understand. Whether you call them stories, case studies, use cases or citations, the outcome is the same. A story, told well, builds credibility, shows you 'know your stuff,' demonstrates your ability to solve serious technical problems and demonstrates the value you bring. A story is so much more memorable than a list of facts and figures. My 5D framework used by thousands of consultants globally allows you to bring even the most technical use case to life. A good story allows your audience to relate to you, your work, and how that can help them, increasing the likelihood of a 'virtual nod' because they see themselves in your story too. The first D - description - sets the context and gives validity to your story. If you've done similar work for a major global player, your audience will sit up and listen. The second D - dilemma - is where we share the challenges, issues and concerns the other customer faced. This does many things - it boosts your credibility and, if you choose the right story, shows what your audience is facing, too, connecting you more intimately. The third D - desire - is what the characters in your customer story wanted. This makes your story 'human' and relatable. Perhaps the CIO needed to overcome a major security issue, but was struggling to get budget from the Board, wanted to demonstrate a return on their ERP (enterprise resource planning) software to t shareholders, or ensure their systems were safe in the cloud following an outage. Your fourth D - delivered - is what you did. This is a pivotal moment. The best tech presenters, the ones who can really hold a room, understand that this descrip...

Welcome ShopTalkers!  Today we're putting it all together - in Episode 78 you mastered the voice, in Episode 79 the words, and now it's time to own your executive presence. So, let's start by defining it - it's built on 3 pillars: gravitas, communication, appearance. Today, it's not just about polish—it's about trust, connection, and authenticity. Unfortunately, gender gaps remain: women hold only about 30% of senior leadership roles globally and are often judged more harshly whether they lean “feminine” or “masculine. 3 Strategies to Elevate Your Presence: 1.  Anchor Gravitas – Project steadiness through tone, pauses, and eye contact. 2.  Lead with Clarity & Connection – Confident register, powerful words, plus empathy and storytelling. 3.  Reflect on Visibility & Trust – Seek feedback, notice how others respond, and make sure people feel heard and valued. Last year, Google invited me to come lead trainings for Aging Awareness Week. This was a truly enjoyable opportunity to work with some brilliant leaders. When I asked about who to expect in the audience, I expected to be told, “People over 55.” Instead, I was told, “This ERG is for folks over 40.”  40!  I don't think of 40 as “aging” just yet. But, I guess it is when society and culture start to stigmatize us, isn't it??   If you are a woman over 40 who is done shrinking and ready to lead with the clarity, power, and confidence that comes from your decades of wisdom, with zero apologies, this episode is for you! In this episode, I'm speaking directly to women over 40 who are ready to start leading with the full force of their lived experience. I know what it feels like to be in rooms where youth, speed, and loud voices are mistaken for leadership - but I'm here to tell you that your depth, clarity, wisdom, perspective, and emotional intelligence are exactly what's needed right now. We're not the past. We are the future of work. And, data backs this up: 42% of labor force growth in the next decade will come from people 55 and older, mostly women. Together, we'll explore how to navigate the double bind of age and gender, where you're expected to stay relevant but not be perceived as “too much.” I identify the forces at play (such as the intersectionality of ageism and sexism) and provide tools to help you reclaim your space with power and intention. You'll hear how your ability to read a room, speak with clarity, and lead for legacy, not ego, is your greatest asset. Your ability to listen deeply, ask better questions, and build meaningful collaborative (not competitive) relationships? That's the edge younger leaders are still learning. This episode is your reminder that you don't need to fight for a seat at the table—you are the table. Your leadership is expansive, rooted, sturdy, and deeply needed. So if you've been waiting for permission to own the room, this is it. 5 Communication Strategies for Handling Someone Who Interrupts or Talks Over YouHold your ground calmly but firmly. When interrupted, pause briefly, then say something like, "I'd like to finish my thought before moving on" or "I wasn't quite done with my point." Use a neutral tone that's assertive without being confrontational.Have a private conversation. Address the pattern outside of group settings: "I've noticed that I'm often interrupted during our discussions, and I'd appreciate the chance to fully express my ideas. Could we work together on this?" This approach avoids public embarrassment while addressing the issue directly.Use body language strategically. Maintain your speaking posture, keep your hand raised slightly, or use a gentle hand gesture to indicate you're still speaking. Sometimes a simple non-verbal cue can effectively communicate that you haven't finished your point.Maintain your speaking rhythm. When someone begins to interrupt, slightly increase your volume (without shouting) and continue speaking. Often, this subtle vocal adjustment signals your intention to finish your thought and discourages interruption.Enlist an ally. If the interruptions occur in meetings, arrange beforehand for a trusted colleague to intervene: "I think Sam wasn't quite finished with their point. I'd like to hear the rest of it." This third-party support can be especially helpful if there's a power dynamic at play. Some resources for you:Want to see how you score as a confident communicator? Take The Confidence Cocktail Assessment: https://karenlaos.com/confidence-cocktail-fb/Project more confidence and credibility with my free tips: 9 Words to Avoid & What to Say Instead: https://karenlaos.lpages.co/words-to-avoid/My book “Trust Your Own Voice”: https://karenlaos.com/book/Episodes also available on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEwQoTGdJX5eME0ccBKiKng/videos Karen Laos, Communication Expert and Confidence Cultivator, leverages 25 years in the boardroom and speaking on the world's most coveted stages such as Google and NASA to transform missed opportunities into wins. This was my biggest talk to date to 200+ leaders and executives in-person. It's interesting because attendees expected an exact formula for executive presence—like you need a certain percentage of extroversion or charisma (by the way you do NOT need both). Executive presence can be learned. In this replay I share tools and frameworks on how to create your own executive presence. In this talk I remind you to see your colleagues with curiosity vs. judgment, and to treat each interaction as a data point to understand someone else's goals and perspectives.I shared personal stories, and I threw in some jokes because, honestly, I secretly dream of being a comedian ;)My favorite part of the talk? Own the Room: 3 Public Speaking Tips to Make ‘Em Remember You EP123

Hey Podsters! Ready to level up your public speaking game? Whether it's the boardroom, a client presentation, or even a networking event, owning the room can make all the difference for you personally and professionally. Today, we're talking about how to leave a lasting impact—not just with what you say, but with how you make people feel. Here are three game-changing tips to help you do just that. Know the RoomI know, sounds basic, right? But this little detail is everything. Knowing the physical space can turn a good presentation into an unforgettable one. Check out the venue online ahead of time. Is it full of windows? You might need darker slides. Is the AV setup tricky? Get there early, do a sound check, and get familiar with where people will be sitting. Trust me, even something as small as a room layout change can throw you off your game if you're not prepared. Pro tip: Let people know what to expect. If the room's cold, remind folks to bring a sweater. Far from the elevator? Tell ‘em to wear comfy shoes. These small touches matter more than you think! Connect with the RoomAnd by "the room," I mean the people in it. Send out a quick questionnaire before the event—find out who they are, what they care about, or the kind of jargon they use. When you step on stage, start with a story. Whether it's a travel mishap, a funny experience, or something current, stories break the ice and make you memorable. People don't remember bullet points—they remember feelings. So, make them feel connected from the jump. Engage with the RoomInteraction is key. Ask questions like, "How many of you have heard of this concept?" Raise your hand, nod—do something that gets people involved. If you see them drifting or scrolling through their phones, reel them back in with a phrase like, "I know we're all busy, but what I'm about to say is really important." And if all else fails? Mix it up! Have them chat in groups or do something interactive. Keeping people engaged will make sure you—and your presentation—are unforgettable. So next time you step up to present, remember: Know the room. Connect with the room. Engage with the room. These tips are tried and true, and I promise they'll help you own any stage. Until next time, go out there and own that room, Podsters!
