5 Communication Strategies for Handling Someone Who Interrupts or Talks Over YouHold your ground calmly but firmly. When interrupted, pause briefly, then say something like, "I'd like to finish my thought before moving on" or "I wasn't quite done with my point." Use a neutral tone that's assertive without being confrontational.Have a private conversation. Address the pattern outside of group settings: "I've noticed that I'm often interrupted during our discussions, and I'd appreciate the chance to fully express my ideas. Could we work together on this?" This approach avoids public embarrassment while addressing the issue directly.Use body language strategically. Maintain your speaking posture, keep your hand raised slightly, or use a gentle hand gesture to indicate you're still speaking. Sometimes a simple non-verbal cue can effectively communicate that you haven't finished your point.Maintain your speaking rhythm. When someone begins to interrupt, slightly increase your volume (without shouting) and continue speaking. Often, this subtle vocal adjustment signals your intention to finish your thought and discourages interruption.Enlist an ally. If the interruptions occur in meetings, arrange beforehand for a trusted colleague to intervene: "I think Sam wasn't quite finished with their point. I'd like to hear the rest of it." This third-party support can be especially helpful if there's a power dynamic at play. Some resources for you:Want to see how you score as a confident communicator? This was my biggest talk to date to 200+ leaders and executives in-person. It's interesting because attendees expected an exact formula for executive presence—like you need a certain percentage of extroversion or charisma (by the way you do NOT need both). Executive presence can be learned. In this replay I share tools and frameworks on how to create your own executive presence. In this talk I remind you to see your colleagues with curiosity vs. judgment, and to treat each interaction as a data point to understand someone else's goals and perspectives.I shared personal stories, and I threw in some jokes because, honestly, I secretly dream of being a comedian ;)My favorite part of the talk? The beautiful coaching and support at the end. What We Cover in This Episode:My Conscious Conversations™ heart-led model on how to create your own, authentic executive presence which includes Passion, Pause, Perspectives, Prepare, Practice and Perform. This is the exact model that got me this talk; my courses with LinkedIn, Penn, and Brown; and closing 2 more speaking engagements this past week.A team template you can use to better understand how to showcase executive presence with team members and executives. This dashboard has helped my clients get VP roles.Word-to-word power phrases you can integrate at your next meeting including how to deal with the most difficult team members. Hey Podsters! Ready to level up your public speaking game? Whether it's the boardroom, a client presentation, or even a networking event, owning the room can make all the difference for you personally and professionally. Today, we're talking about how to leave a lasting impact—not just with what you say, but with how you make people feel. Here are three game-changing tips to help you do just that. Know the RoomI know, sounds basic, right? But this little detail is everything. Knowing the physical space can turn a good presentation into an unforgettable one. Check out the venue online ahead of time. Is it full of windows? You might need darker slides. Is the AV setup tricky? Get there early, do a sound check, and get familiar with where people will be sitting. Trust me, even something as small as a room layout change can throw you off your game if you're not prepared. Pro tip: Let people know what to expect. If the room's cold, remind folks to bring a sweater. Far from the elevator? Tell ‘em to wear comfy shoes. These small touches matter more than you think! Connect with the RoomAnd by "the room," I mean the people in it. Send out a quick questionnaire before the event—find out who they are, what they care about, or the kind of jargon they use. When you step on stage, start with a story. Whether it's a travel mishap, a funny experience, or something current, stories break the ice and make you memorable. People don't remember bullet points—they remember feelings. So, make them feel connected from the jump. Engage with the RoomInteraction is key. Ask questions like, "How many of you have heard of this concept?" Raise your hand, nod—do something that gets people involved. If you see them drifting or scrolling through their phones, reel them back in with a phrase like, "I know we're all busy, but what I'm about to say is really important." And if all else fails? Mix it up! Have them chat in groups or do something interactive. Keeping people engaged will make sure you—and your presentation—are unforgettable. So next time you step up to present, remember: Know the room. Connect with the room. Engage with the room. These tips are tried and true, and I promise they'll help you own any stage. Until next time, go out there and own that room, Podsters! Step into your strengths, light that spark and show up with clarity and confidence with a monthly shot of confidence and actionable tools in my (free!) Confidence Community. Sign Up You know who she is, the woman who owns the room without even saying a word. She radiates confidence and seems so very sure of herself, in any situation. Well Podsters, today we are sharing the deets on how she does it. We will explore how body language impacts your self-confidence and also, how your body language says it all before you even say a word. After today's episode you will be locked and loaded to share your message like a boss while staying true to who you are. So, what can you do to own the room? 1 – Make sure you're comfortable and not trying to wear something that you *think* will look and feel good. The more comfortable you are, the less you will pull, tug and worry about what you're wearing. When comes to owning that stage, size does not matter so get the bigger size if it's more comfortable. 2 - If you're looking for unshakable confidence, try power posing. That is, taking up physical space. If it's a meeting room, spread out your work. If you're on stage – walk around and dominate that space! 3 – Be mindful of your body language. This is a natural next step to taking up space. What's your body saying? Are you power posing? Arms open? Hands moving? Doing something with your body that you would naturally do when you're with friends or family will automatically release your confidence factor which is the number one way to command attention. Remember, our mantra here at Unmute Yourself is to Speak Up, Stand Out and Step Up and your body language is the perfect opportunity to literally step in to who you know you are meant to be. Many of us, particularly women, experience endless frustration because we don't feel heard. At work and at home, it seems like we are constantly interrupted and rarely feel in control of a conversation. This week Viv Groskop, journalist, podcaster, stand-up comedian and author of How to Own The Room and Lift As You Climb, talks with Andrew about how to speak so that people will listen. Diving into the world of stand-up taught Viv about pacing, pausing and gauging people's reactions; but most importantly, about quieting your own ego and tuning into your audience. Andrew and Viv discuss why exactly it is that many women struggle to be heard. At the practical level, it is crucial to enter the discussion assertively. We also need to make sure we are not self-sabotaging by pre-judging our own contribution as “not good enough”. Viv Groskop hosts the chart-topping podcast How to Own The Room. She has written five books and this year will be a judge for the International Booker Prize. She is a regular guest presenter on BBC Radio 4 and has appeared on Woman's Hour, Today and Front Row. Viv is also a fluent Russian speaker and is a trustee of Pushkin House, the independent centre for Russian culture in London. I've just come back from a run. Today is a beautiful autumn day, and yet I missed most of it. It wasn't just that I was experiencing the pain of restarting exercise, it was that I was in my head the whole time; thinking about work, thinking about the new book and how to launch it, thinking about all sorts of stuff. Trying to figure it all out, and in doing so, missing the glory of it all. Here's the thing, sometimes the secret to a good life is realising that it's not all figure-out-able. Yes, you are at the center of your world, but at the same time, the world continues to turn, regardless. Muriel Wilkins is the author of Own the Room, but she's best known as the host of a podcast for Harvard Business Review called Coaching Real Leaders, where she coaches real executives in real-time for the whole world to hear. Today, she shares her expertise on a different podcast, with me, and all of you. Get book links and resources at https://www.mbs.works/2-pages-podcast/ Muriel reads two pages from ‘The Untethered Soul' by Michael Alan Singer. [reading begins at 12:50] Hear us discuss: Being present in the world of work: “I tell my clients, ‘I'm not here to take your challenges away, I'm here to help you lead with a little more ease.'” [21:12] | Letting go of resistance. [25:06] | Living with ambition: “If you hold a rose too tightly, it will eventually die, and in the process, you'll bleed also.” [27:47] | The source of Muriel's ambition. [32:01]

Hey everyone - this is a long one but its a webinar I did combining a lot of the themes and topics I talk about on here, if you are looking for the presentation you can find it on youtube but this gives you an opportunity to listen to how I actually sell externally vs me telling you how I sell externally on a topic that is front of mind to all of us.
Today is not one of my normal series "daily drops" or guest speaker interviews, its a 45 minute webinar I hosted for customers and prospects around selling though Pandemic and specifically how to own a room virtually. It's important because a lot of the themes packed in here are themes I will pull out in future episodes and also allows you to see how I actually "pitch" verse me telling you how I pitch. My intention is for you not to only hear the lessons I am articulating but see my style, my tonality, my additions of humor, appointing a driver, how I create engagement and beyond. For those interested. this presentation is available with visuals and slides on our Youtube channel Co hosted by Director of Sales Enablement for SME USA, Alexandra Campione.
This is a lesson on how to own a room even if its being done virtually. Anyone actively selling to prospects or interacting with clients for meetings should take a listen. This is longer than my normal 10 min rants but hope you get some good tips out of it to close despite the situation we are in.

Have you ever walked into a room and just felt like it swallowed you up whole? Or felt like you disappeared and became a wallflower? Maybe you dread walking into a room […]
Have you heard of the an-empath-walks-into-a-bar joke? Me neither. Probably because walking into a crowded space is no joke for empaths / energetically sensitive beings. Because you're easily overwhelmed by other people's energy, an empath's instinctual response when walking into a room is often times to hide and to shrink. The reasoning is that if you take up less space, others won't come mess with you and it's less likely to be overwhelmed. But that strategy rarely works. You end up feeling out of place and defeated, and missing the chance of making meaningful connections with people. In this episode, I talk about an alternative strategy-- the right things to do when you try to navigate a roomful of people, so that you not only feel comfortable and less overwhelmed, but also attract the right people to you. This is a great approach especially if you're energetically sensitive. But even if you are not, the practices I mentioned in the episode will still help you to own the room.Subscribe to THE SCHOOL OF INTUITION (FREE EDITION) on Soundwise
