Episode Description & Show Notes: This week, a fitness influencer went viral for saying people over 200 pounds shouldn't be allowed in Pilates class—and that instructors with a “gut” shouldn't be teaching. Yes, she deleted the video. But the damage was done. Thousands of people agreed with her. This is the fitness industry we're still up against. And in this episode, we're not just pushing back—we're burning the whole narrative down. We break down 13 research-backed reasons why building your fitness brand around body transformation isn't just unethical—it's lazy, outdated, and costing you money. What we cover: Why transformation-based branding leads to low retention and high churn How extrinsic motivation backfires (and what the neuroscience says) The impact of shame-based messaging on mental health How to actually build emotional loyalty that fuels long-term growth Why purpose-driven brands scale better—and feel better This episode is part reckoning, part guidebook. We brought the science, the lived experience, and the tools to help you build a brand that doesn't just sell workouts—but moves people. Whether you've already left the old model behind or are still working your way out of it—this one's for you. If this message resonates, share it. Post it. Text it to your team. Forward it to another studio owner. This is how we shift the industry—together.   SPRING INTO SUMMER AUDITS (Limited-Time Offer) Want to be sure your brand is saying what it's supposed to—and that your class experience is reinforcing it? Denn you are not alone!!

The Spiritual Problem With Thinspiration

Compared to Who?

Thinspiration or Fitspiration has been around since I was a kid, only it didn't have such a cool name. But, I learned that cutting pictures out of magazines of women whom I aspired to look like would help me, somehow, look more like them. I read I should put these pictures on the refrigerator and that would help me not eat. I should put them on my mirror so I could look at these images, every day, and be reminded of my goal--to have that kind of body. It may sound innocent, but friends, fitspiration and thinspiration are not of the Lord. Jesus doesn't ask us to try to look like other women. Jesus doesn't ask us to not eat so that we can have someone else's body size or shape. There is so much evil wrapped up in this seemingly innocent "inspirational" exercise--and it's time that it was exposed. Today we talk about the problem with thinspiration and fitspiration and how, spiritually and physically harmful it can be. Looking at another woman's body and deciding that you "want one just like it" is the type of coveting talked about way back in the Old Testament! Looking at a photo with envy, daily, doesn't lead us to a place of body image freedom--it leads to a place where we are further stuck in our idolatry. Topics we tackle in today's show about the Problem with Thinspiration: What are we worshipping? Have we traded the "truth" for a "lie" like Romans 1:25 says. God didn't make me to look like her. Does posting these pictures actually bring us more shame and hurt us in other ways? God isn't waiting for me to look more like that image, I'm made in his image. If you follow any fitness influencers or trainers on instagram, then I venture to guess your feed is littered with pictures of women working out in sports bras and bike shorts, posing in their bikinis,  flexing six packs and bubble butts.  Or  you're seeing all kinds of “inspiring success stories” highlighting people's weight loss journey - maybe you've even taken such photos or been a “before and after” case at one point yourself.Today we're talking about “fitspiration” photos or before-and-after pictures because it's my belief that these kinds of images are not only NOT inspiring but are actually killing your motivation to move and perpetuating a negative body image.  In my opinion they are the most toxic byproduct of the fitness industry, and I don't say that lightly.  This type of imagery might seem inspiring, but tune in to explore how it could be  contributing to a sense of false hope and shame.  Rooted in comparison, pictures like these make you believe that this perfect, fit, thin ideal is realistic, achievable and maintainable for any woman.  When in reality only about 3% of the population actually has the genetic makeup to look this way without extremely restrictive behaviours.  We tend to think that being our BEST SELF means being in our BEST shape.  Tune in as we challenge this belief and expose how fitness culture is set up to make you hate your body - and how you can begin to separate your health and your worth from your appearance.  What you'll learn by listening:The three BIG problems with “fitspiration” imageryWhat you're not seeing behind the photoHow comparing yourself to someone's “after” photo is damaging to the self-image of both you and themThe dangers of complimenting weight lossHow being in your “best shape” isn't the same as being your best selfHow to begin the work of disconnecting your worth from your physique.  Studies Referenced:“Exercise to be Fit, not Skinny; the Effect of Fitspiration Imagery on Women's Body Image”:  Tiggemann and Zicardo, Body Image, 2015, Sept.  https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26176993/Mentioned in the show:  Right Body for Me - 16 week transformative coaching programThe Motivation Secret - FREE guide to help you get unstuck with movement.Links:Resources for Non-Diet ProfessionalsInstagramFacebookRadiant Vitality WebsiteSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/radiantvitality)

Cravings and hunger are not the same things. However, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. By understanding the science of fullness, it will help you stay on track with your health. Ever had your stomach growl or make noises. You pause thinking you're hungry. Or are you? Is your mind playing tricks on you? Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT It is a challenge to know whether or not you are hungry. There are many factors that are involved both chemically and physically. Let's look at hunger. Hunger signals your body that you are insufficient in nutrients and energy. Sometimes it comes in the form of a rumbling tummy or at other times the tick-tock of the clock. But the key is understanding and knowing whether or not you really are hungry. When you have this feeling of hunger, it comes from the drop in your blood sugar signaling to your brain to release the hormone, Ghrelin. Once your body has the message that you're hungry and food begins to fill your stomach, Ghrelin slows down and the peptide YY is released. This helps to signal satiation. You are fueled up and full. However, it's those pesky little cravings that can mess up everything. These cravings can be encouraged and brought on by commercials, boredom, smells, stress, sadness, and even the late-night sweet tooth. All of a sudden, you find yourself in the pantry grabbing for the closest salty, savory, or sweet thing to reduce the urge. Some people though have a hard time trying to figure out whether it's a craving or if they're really hungry. It's all in your head. One way to figure this out is to ask yourself if a nutritious food would satisfy you. If you really don't want the good stuff, then most likely it's the pesky craving. Your mind is wanting to fill a void with food instead of dealing with whatever it is. Your cravings get in the way so you can bury what you don't want. So how can you escape the cravings? Outsmart your cravings! The K.I.S.S. ~ Outsmart your cravings! Once you begin to recognize and realize the differences between hunger and cravings, you can then focus on your health and wellness goals with less of a distraction. So let's outsmart your cravings. Space out your meals and snacks. This will help you to avoid feeling starved. When your body receives the correct nutrients and allows it to nourish your body, it helps to regulate your blood sugar levels and keep your hunger hormones in check. Be cautious when skipping meals or snacks, because it can later lead to cravings. Load up on protein and fiber. This will help you feel satiated longer. With any meal or snack, if at all possible, make sure you have it packed with protein and fiber. It does the body and mind good keeping you satisfied for a longer period of time. Practice mindfulness. Be present and aware of what you are eating, when you are eating, and why you are eating. If you have problems with the what, when, and why you're eating, definitely take a moment and intentionally ask yourself, "Why food now?". You can change the way you see your food. But it's going to take effort both chemically, physically, and mentally. You can outsmart your cravings and enjoy the food God intended for nourishment of your mind, body, and spirit. Anorexia Nervosa, a disorder whose name literally translates to “Too nervous to eat,” is now an epidemic in many first world countries. Of course, it’s easy to blame the rise of social media and the “Fitspiration” movement currently taking Instagram by storm, but did you know that Anorexia Nervosa has existed since the Middle Ages (if not earlier)? It’s true! You might also be surprised to know that Anorexia is the deadliest mental health disorder aside from opioid abuse. Irregardless, treatment can often be very inaccessible to those in need due to location, finances, or a variety of other factors. What else don’t you know? Grab a snack and tune in and test your knowledge as we explore one of the most common - but also most commonly misunderstood - eating disorders. If you have reason to believe that you or someone that you care about may be experiencing Anorexia Nervosa, there is an anonymous screening tool available to you at nationaleatingdisorders.org/screening-tool. If you want to reach out for support, you can contact the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) hotline by phone at 1-800-931-2237 (available 11:00am-9:00pm EST Mondays-Thursdays; 11:00am-5:00pm EST Fridays) or you may contact the Chat Line at https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helpline (available 9:00am-9:00pm EST Mondays-Thursdays; 9:00am-5:00pm EST Fridays). To get involved in nonprofit volunteer opportunities that support and further the cause, you can check out nonprofit organizations such as Project HEAL (theprojectheal.org) and the National Eating Disorder Association (nationaleatingdisorders.org). Intro Music: “Scars To Your Beautiful” by Alessia CaraTransition Music: “Skinny Love" by Bon IverOutro Music: “Unpretty” by TLCFeaturing audio clips from Buzzfeed Yellow/Buzzfeed News, TEDxYouth@ChristChurch, CBS Eyewitness News, and the documentary “Miss Americana” (courtesy of Netflix).

We've all heard the saying, "What you think about you bring about." The art of thoughts has greater influence and impact on your life than we realize. It's the culmination of what moves us forward in life. It's the BIG BANG in your life! Everything that you do is wrapped up in the art of thoughts. Ready, Set, A.I.M. 5-Day Challenge How to create happy habits for lasting change.   So how did you wake up this morning? What was your "self" conversation like? If the art of thoughts is truly the big bank of your life, why don't we spend more time understanding it? Maybe we think we really don't have any control. Maybe we are OK with reacting to what happens to us. Maybe we just don't care. I believe we all have a "wonderment". This awe admiration of what it might be like if we could achieve our purpose and live out our passion. But there's a problem --- we don't take time to learn the art of thoughts, how our mindset really affects our lives. Sometimes we don't put our effort into what really matters. YOU matter!!! "The fundamental element to your life's happiness is mindset!" ~ Kristianne Wargo Ready, Set, A.I.M. If you don't learn to master the art of thoughts, you might as well be ok with where you are right now. What you think about you bring about. Negativity breeds disgust, despair, loneliness, hopelessness to name a few. If we don't make a conscious choice in deciding what we want, then we are running on autopilot. Create Your Now Archive 3 with Kristianne Wargo

When we lack motivation to keep going, sometimes it's easier to retreat; fall back instead of fall forward. However, the best step you can take is to stay in action. And retreat doesn't qualify as action! Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact    Action is the fact or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim. Ready, Set, A.I.M. 5-Day Challenge How to create happy habits for lasting change. Somehow we are more attracted to running from the pain, the unknown, the uncomfortableness to hide beneath the shadows burying our goals. You are worthy of more. Stay in action! If you want to impact and live an empowering life, you have to be willing to take some risks. And those risks are embracing your emotions. You see, motivation doesn't disappear and fizzle away. What happens is we are running away from ourselves so we don't have to "FEEL". We don't want to upset our inner self. Why feel heart palpitations when you can keep calm and be reserved? It's more comforting to stay with what you know even if that means you are remaining stuck and not pursuing your to do list, your dreams. Do you really want to stay where you are? You excuses connect to your emotions giving you an escape to not go on. Why not finish stronger? Stay in action! You motivation will be ignited when you emotions begin to be stretched. Ready, Set, A.I.M. [FREE] 5 Day Challenge. When typical anxious, butterfly feelings hit your body and your mind begins to define what's happening --- stay in action. You can't retreat or runaway. You will not fall a part if you become a little shaky; if your thoughts lead you to "I can't believe I'm doing this!" --- You will actually be vulnerable and experience a revolutionary jolt of motivation. You can accomplish anything. You can do this. Nothing is impossible! The K.I.S.S. ~ Stay in ACTION! "Never fear when emotions are near; always stay in action." Don't work out because you hate your body, go work out because you love your body. There's a deeper side to fitness that comes from within." - Brett Hoebel   On this week's episode of the Open Sky Fitness Podcast, we had  author and creator the 20 Minute Body™ book and DVDs, celebrity trainer on NBC’s The Biggest Loser season 11, and the mind behind Sweat with Soul, Brett Hoebel, back on the show to share his tips and advice on creating HIIT workouts for a stronger body. Brett shared so much great advice and insight as fars as how to know if you're ready to do a HIIT workout, what to expect from HIIT, how to create your own HIIT workouts, and when to challenge yourself.   What is HIIT Training?   "If you are seeking results and you want to see the weight loss, calories burn, and the number change on the scale, you're going to have to tax your body and stretch your body to the point where it has to respond. That's called adaptation." - Rob Dionne   High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of interval training that consists of a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. Rather than committing yourself to one long, 60+ minute workout lifting weights or running on the treadmill to see results, you can complete a HIIT workout in 20-30 minutes to see even better results: Stronger, more defined (not bulky) muscles Greater stamina and higher energy Increased mobility Constant body adaptation that's up for new challenges When you complete a HIIT workout, you should feel a little soreness. You shouldn't be so sore that you can't move, but just enough to feel it in your body afterwards. A little soreness after a HIIT workout is good because it's telling you that your body is adapting and getting more fit.   "Can you burn more calories in a longer workout? Yes, you can. However, the workouts that are the best workouts are the ones that get done. The ones that get done are usually the short ones and especially when we have short attention spans and time commitments." - Brett Hoebel    What Are Common HIIT Mistakes? A lot of people want to jump into HIIT training right a way, but you need to know a couple of things first. If you're someone who doesn't exercise frequently, you want to build your heart and make it strong by doing aerobic and cardio strength training workouts first like walking, running, jogging, swimming, or cycling with lots of rest. Since HIIT is an anaerobic workout, you need to be able to have enough strength, speed and power to be able to tolerate lactic acid that forms in the body.    How to Warm-Up for a HIIT Workout Before you get into a full-on HIIT workout, you should prepare the body by doing a dynamic warm-up first. You could run on a treadmill first, but it's just not the same. Running on a treadmill will warm up your body, but it won't warm up your nervous system or prepare your body for different movement patterns and coordination skills. When you do a dynamic warm-up, you're not just sitting and holding a stretch. Instead, you're moving through each position that you're about to do for the HIIT workout, but at 60% effort. Ease into your HIIT workout by doing simple lunges, slow cardio, or a couple of push ups to get the body ready.   3 Different Styles of HIIT Training   "You can tweak the workout, but if you change up the pattern too much because you're bored, you'll never master the movement pattern and progress. If you never master the movement, technique, and form, you can end up just not putting a lot of effort into the HIIT workout."- Brett Hoebel   It takes time and commitment to really nail down a HIIT routine before you move onto the next one or change it a bit to create a bigger challenge for yourself. To prepare your body for more advanced HIIT workouts, there are three different styles of training that Brett suggests: Beginner: 4x4 HIIT Intermediate: 30 High, 30 Low HIIT Advanced: Complex HIIT   The 4x4 HIIT Workout This routine will help you get ready to do a full out HIIT workout and move on to the 30 High, 30 Low HIIT.  4x4 HIIT workout is for 45 seconds on and 15 seconds off. It includes a combination of 4 exercises for 4 rounds to focus on more cardio strength than explosive movement to ensure that you're focusing on doing a good, quality job for each movement. Instead of a jump squat, do a regular squat. Rather than an explosive sit up, do a whole plank. The movement patterns are the same, but it's not the same type of explosiveness as the 30 High, 30 Low HIIT workout.   The 30 High, 30 Low HIIT Workout To do a 30 High, 30 Low HIIT workout, you do a HIIT exercise for 30 hard seconds and then rest for 30 seconds. If you prefer, you can also mix and match 20 High, 40 Low...15 High, 45 Low....10 High, 50 Low etc. A 30 High, 30 Low HIIT workout can contain a mix of 4-5 movements that usually include the following examples: A fast body weight movement: Burpees Jumping jacks Running in place Mountain climbers A lower body movement: Lunges Squats Jump squats An upper body push movement: Push ups An upper body pull movement: Bent over rows An integrated core movement: Planks Side plans Hip bridges Russian twists To top it off, do 4 or 5 rounds all out with explosive movements.   "With any form of exercise, but especially with HIIT training, you really have to know how to micro progress yourself. Even just a set of dumbbells can make a huge difference in a HIIT workout." - Brett Hoebel   The Complex HIIT Workout The Complex HIIT workout is made up of 5 different movement patterns with weights like dumbbells or a barbell. This workout is set up to have 4 rounds with 5 exercises and the goal is to complete everything within 20 minutes. The Complex HIIT workout is task based in order  to see how fast you can complete all 4 rounds. If you go over 20 minutes, then you go over and that's fine. When you you're able to complete it in 20 minutes or sooner, you move up in weights. Example workout:  Dumbbell jump squat  Walking lunge with the weight on your back  A dumbbell bench with your butt hanging off of the edge  A bilateral bench with butt off of the edge  A bent over row with a straight up barbell  A Swiss ball crunch with a dumbbell   About Brett Hoebel As the author and creator of the revolutionary 20 Minute Body™ book and DVDs, and celebrity trainer on NBC’s The Biggest Loser season 11, Brett Hoebel is one of the country’s most sought-after experts for fast fat-loss, nutrition and motivation. There is nothing I love more than answering questions from readers or social media followers.   And every 1st Thursday of the month, I do just that. Community Questions is a chance for me to answer YOUR questions.   They don't have to be fitness related, either. (Though most are.)   So this month, I had three excellent questions come in: If weight loss is your primary objective, how often should you weigh yourself? What's the significance having 30g of protein in the morning? Is it appropriate to use pictures as inspiration for succeeding goals?

If you follow me on Instagram or read WANT often, you know I'm a sucker for a good fitness experience. And it's not because I'm super passionate about how to do a lunge or because of any sort of caloric burn: just like anything else worthwhile, fitness, to me, is all about how it makes you feel. Today’s guest is a long time in the making (we may or may not have tried to record this 7xs, nbd), someone whose journey I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing over the last five years: Kirsten Potenza, the co-founder of POUND. POUND is a workout unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced - IF YOUR IDEA of a workout looks more like head-banging at a rock concert than logging miles on a treadmill, then POUND may just be your fitness spirit animal. The concept behind this killer workout is simple yet genius: a full-body cardio jam session using weighted Ripstix to drum to the music for 45 crazy minutes. I live for music, so when I was first introduced to POUND, and Kirsten, I felt like I’d found a workout meant for me. The POUND story was born from struggle and a journey to self-realization that involved finding out what was missing for both Kirsten and co-founder Cristina. When they met, they were both living in extremes - Kirsten, in particular, was a work-a-holic and a play-a-holic with zero sense of balance. After realizing there was a shift that needed to be made, POUND and the POUND philosophy was born: life can’t be fully enjoyed without balance and nurturing, and if you give up on self-improvement, you give up on yourself. There is always something you can do, big or small, to be the you YOU know you're meant to be. In this episode we talk Kirsten’s past with negativity and her catalyst for a new way of thinking, going from feeling completely alone to being a community builder extraordinaire, why all "fitspiration" is NOT created equal, and the immense value in going slow in whatever you feel passionate about. I’m thrilled to have her on the WANTcast and to be able to introduce you to her. WANT Kirsten.
