The fateful year 2020 brought dramatic challenges to American cities. The COVID-19 pandemic and the civil unrest caused by the killing of George Floyd led to a cascade of negative media stories about cities, often politically motivated. It seemed possible that the economic and demographic gains cities had achieved over the last few decades could be lost. In fact, there has been measurable population loss in larger cities caused by changing work/life patterns and changing public perceptions about the costs and benefits of urban living.rnrnReleased in July 2024, the 38 chapters in The Case for Cities draw on the expertise of contributors from the academic, professional, and civic sectors. They argue that, when faced with these challenges, advocates for cities must make a vigorous case for cities and show how they aren't the cause of America's social, environmental, economic, and public health problems but, are rather, are the places where the solutions to those problems will be found.rnrnJoin us at the City Club as we hear from the book's authors and experts in urban planning on what is needed to promote a viable and sustainable urban resurgence.
Senate Bill 1, touted by supporters as a way to fight back against liberal indoctrination on college campuses, passed the senate 21-11 this week and is on its way to the Ohio House. It drew loads of opposition before the senate affirmed it. Among other things, it bans Diversity Equity and Inclusion efforts and forbids labor strikes by professors. Jim Tressel, the former football coach of Ohio State University and president of Youngstown State University is now the lieutenant governor of Ohio. Is it a temporary foray into state government, or will he seek to move up to governor next year? Lee Fisher, the former Ohio attorney general and lieutenant govenor, now serving as dean of the Cleveland State University College of Law, will become president of Baldwin Wallace University on July 1. And Jo-Ann, the craft-retailer based in Hudson, is shuttering most of its Ohio stores as it closes 500 locations across the country amid bankruptcy We will discuss the bill these stories and more on the Friday “Reporters Roundtable.”

The following year she moved to the UCLA School of Medicine, where she received her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1976. She completed her internship at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, California, in 1977, and chose to specialize in emergency medicine.Fisher was selected as an astronaut candidate with NASA Astronaut Group 8, the first group of NASA astronauts to include women, in January 1978. She became the Astronaut Office representative for the development and testing of the Canadarm remote manipulator system and the testing of payload bay door contingency spacewalk procedures. For the first four Space Shuttle missions she was assigned to the search and rescue helicopters supporting the flights. For the next four missions, she was involved in the verification of flight software at the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL), and was a "Cape Crusader"—one of the astronauts who supported vehicle integration and payload testing at Kennedy Space Center. She flew in space on the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-51-A mission in November 1984, during which she used the Canadarm to retrieve two satellites that had been placed in incorrect orbits. After a leave of absence to raise her family from 1989 to 1995, Fisher returned to the Astronaut Office, where she worked on procedures and training issues in support of the International Space Station (ISS). She was a capsule communicator (CAPCOM) from January 2011 to August 2013, and the lead CAPCOM for ISS Expedition 33. The state of Wisconsin has firmly established itself as a battleground state: Four of the six past presidential elections have been decided by fewer than 23,000 votes, and the political stakes have never been higher. Yet, the state's politics echo many that we see here in Ohio, right down to a tense dispute over Wisconsin's Republican-drawn legislative maps, which were overturned in December.rnrnIn April 2023, Justice Janet C. Protasiewicz was elected to serve her first term on the Wisconsin Supreme Court after a race that garnered national attention. Her accession was viewed as a liberal shift for the court, the first in 15 years, and as a check on a long-standing conservative grip on the state's government.rnrnPrior to her election, Justice Protasiewicz spent nearly a decade on the bench as a circuit court judge in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Before her time as a judge, she served more than 25 years as Assistant District Attorney, where she prosecuted serious crimes. Throughout her career, Justice Protasiewicz has been deeply involved in the community and has held many leadership positions.rnrnJoin us at the City Club as we hear from Justice Protasiewicz in conversation with Dean of CSU College of Law Lee Fisher on the latest in Wisconsin, and what Ohio can learn from Wisconsin's highest court.
Anna Lee Fisher, a former NASA astronaut, the first mother in space and a triple Bruin, sits down with Podcasts contributor Aidan Teeger.
Dr. Anna Lee Fisher joined the ranks of NASA's Astronauts in November 1984 on the Space Shuttle Discovery. As part of the famously diverse NASA Class 8 chronicled in Meredith Bagby's fascinating book The New Guys, Dr. Fisher became one of the first women & the first mother to fly in space. Her mission was pivotal, marking the first time that NASA captured malfunctioning satellites from orbit, returning them back to earth for repair. The mission had many challenges, requiring ingenuity from the crew to achieve their goals. “SocialFlight Live!” is a live broadcast dedicated to supporting General Aviation pilots and enthusiasts during these challenging times. Welcome back to America's leading higher education law podcast, EdUp Legal - part of the EdUp Experience Podcast Network! In this episode, we welcome Lee Fisher, who serves as Dean and Joseph C. Hostetler BakerHostetler Chair in Law at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University, a position he has held since 2017. Dean Fisher shares with us his unusual path to the deanship, from being Ohio Attorney General from 1991 to 1995, to serving as Ohio Lieutenant Governor; Director of the Ohio Department of Development, State Senator; and State Representative, among other positions. He shares that although he has loved every position in his career, his favorite is being a dean because in working with students, he feels he has found the fountain of youth. Dean Fisher shares the three most serious challenges he has faced or is facing during his deanship at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. They include unrealized merger discussions with the University of Akron Law School; being reported by the ABA as out of compliance due to financial concerns related to additional staff hiring, something that has since been rectified; and a petition to change the name of the law school. He shares how this name change came about, and the serious work that has been done to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table, from students to faculty to alumni. He shares how taking this approach assures that everyone's voices are heard, and that such stakeholder inclusion is demonstrative of his approach to leadership, and consistent with what he teaches law students about leadership. To kick off Season two, we bring you our first edition of a community table talk format that we hope to use occasionally. The longer conversations are really great for getting into the details of a topic, but this is a good way to gather a multitude of perspectives on one or two questions. Today we welcome 6 great guests including Tanguler gray, the Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Human Services, Lee Fisher, Assistant Director from Ventura County California Child Support Services, Liesa Stockdale, the State IV-D Director for Utah, Charles Smith from CSR Consulting and a long time Child Support leader from Texas, Lisa Skenadore, a VP with Systems and Methods, and the current NCSEA President, and Dr. Rita Cameron Wedding, a previous guest on the show, from the Implicit Bias Training Institute. It's a great line up of guests answering two compelling questions. At the end of the show, you hear our own answers as well. We welcome your feedback on this format, as well as suggestions for future table talk questions and guests.
